It is a mission aimed at transforming 500 cities and towns into efficient urban living spaces, with special focus on a healthy and green environment for children.
The Cabinet approved Rs 50,000 crore for this scheme which is to be spent over the next five years.
It will ensure basic infrastructure services relating to water supply, sewerage, seepage management, storm water drains, transport and development of green spaces and parks with special provision for meeting the needs of children.
There will be promotion of reforms like e-governance
- This scheme will be implemented in 500 cities and towns with population 1 lakh and above, some cities located on banks of main river, few capital cities and other important cities located in hilly region, island and tourist spots.
- The main feature of this scheme is that the states get the flexibility of designing schemes based on the needs of identified cities and in their execution and monitoring.
- For cities and towns with a population of up to 10 lakh the assistance from centre will be up to 50%.
- For those with a population of above 10 lakh, the assistance will be one-third of the project cost.
