Two Indian – Americans Shantanu Narayen (Chief of Adobe) and Vivek Murthy (Former US Surgeon General) will be honoured with the prestigious ‘Great Immigrants’ annual award on US’s Independence Day on July 4. Shantanu Narayen and Vivek Murthy are among 30 honorees for 2017, representing more than 30 different countries of origin, a wide range of personal immigration stories, and a high-level of professional leadership in numerous fields.
Brief Biography of Shantanu Narayen:
55-year-old Shantanu Narayen a native of Hyderabad has an undergraduate degree in electronics engineering, a master’s degree in computer science, and an MBA from UC Berkeley.
- He is a board member of Pfizer and US-India Business Council (USIBC).
- He was among a select group of CEOs who met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington for a roundtable during the leader’s visit for first bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump in June 2017.
Brief Biography of Vivek Murthy:
- 39-year-old Vivek Murthy was born in the UK and is a Harvard and Yale alumnus, he was appointed as US Surgeon General by former President Barack Obama in 2014, becoming the first-ever Indian-American to occupy the post and also the youngest ever surgeon general of the country.
- However, Mr Murthy was dismissed in April 2017 by the Trump administration.
Canadian-origin social entrepreneur Jeff Skoll, PayPal cofounder of Ukrainian origin Max Levchin, Iranian-origin philanthropist and entrepreneur Hushang Ansary are among the other honourees for 2017.

Great Immigrants honor is conferred every year on July 4 since 2006 by Carnegie Corporation of New York.
- The award is conferred upon naturalised citizens of US to recognise their notable contributions to the progress of society.
- Andrew Carnegie (Scottish-American industrialist who led the expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century), who founded Carnegie Corporation of New York in 1911, was an immigrant from Scotland.
