Cabinet Approvals on May 28, 2025On May 28, 2025, the union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi approved the following proposal schemes:
i.The union cabinet has approved the continuation of the 1.5% Interest Subvention (IS) component under the Modified Interest Subvention Scheme (MISS) for FY26 to double farmers’ income, strengthen the rural credit system, and boost agricultural growth.
ii.The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the proposal of two multitracking projects across Indian Railways(IR), as part of Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti National Master Plan (PMGS-NMP) in MP and Maharashtra, to ensure seamless and faster transportation of both passengers and goods.
iii.The CCEA approved the increase in the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for 14 Kharif Crops for Marketing Season 2025-26, to ensure remunerative prices to the growers for their produce.

India’s First AI SEZ to come up in Chhattisgarh, RackBank to Invest 1000 CroreOn May 28, 2025, India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-centric Special Economic Zone (SEZ), to be developed by Indore (Madhya Pradesh) based carbon-neutral data center, Rackbank Data Centers Private Limited with an investment of Rs1,000 crores in Nava Raipur, Chhattisgarh, as a major step towards positioning India as global technology hub.

  • The SEZ is designed to house state-of-the-art infrastructure for AI research, development, and deployment.

i.The Rackbank Data Center SEZ, spread across six acres, will include a 1.5 lakh square foot (sq.f) facility equipped with advanced servers and systems capable of powering AI technologies and large-scale digital operaions.
ii.The zone is envisioned as a digital nerve centre for India, with plans to develop four high-density data centres with a combined capacity of 80 Megawatts (MW), sufficient to support digital infrastructure across multiple states.

India to Operationalize 47 New National Waterways by 2027; Cargo Traffic to Reach 156 MTPA by FY26On May 26, 2025, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), chaired the Consultative Committee meeting on Inland Waterways Transport(IWT) in Mumbai (Maharashtra).

  • The meeting outlined plans for operationalizing key projects and future initiatives presented by the Noida, Uttar Pradesh (UP) Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the nodal agency under the MoPSW.

i.76 National Waterways (NWs) targeted to be operational by 2027, including 47 new NWs.
ii.Cargo volume on NWsis projected to reach 156 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) by Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26), aligning with the Maritime India Vision 2030 target of 200 MTPA.
iii.IWT network to expand from 11 States (FY24) to 23 States & 4 Union Territories (UTs) by FY27.

India’s 1st Privately-Led Helicopter Manufacturing Unit to be Set Up by Tata-Airbus in Karnataka
In May 2025, Hyderabad(Telangana) based Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), the aerospace arm of the Tata Group, in collaboration with European aerospace giant Airbus, is set to establish India’s first privately-led helicopter Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Kolar district, Karnataka.

  • The facility will assemble the Airbus H125 helicopter, a global bestseller in the intermediate single-engine category. The plant is expected to begin operations by 2026.

i.This FAL will be the fourth such installation globally, after similar setups in France, the United States, and Brazil. In its initial phase, the Kolar facility aims to produce 10 H125 helicopters annually, with scope for capacity expansion to meet rising demand.
ii.Airbus projects a requirement of over 500 H125-class helicopters in the Asia-Pacific region over the next 20 years.
iii.The Airbus H125, part of the Écureuil family, commands nearly 80% of the global market share in its category, with over 4,300 units in service and a cumulative 38 million flight hours logged.
iv.In addition to setting up a helicopter assembly unit in Karnataka, Tata and Airbus are jointly developing a C295 aircraft assembly facility in Vadodara, Gujarat.

Vishwanath Karthikey Becomes Youngest Indian to Complete Seven Summits ChallengeIn May 2025, Vishwanath Karthikey Padakanti, a 16-year-old mountaineer from Hyderabad(Telangana), became the youngest Indian and the second youngest globally to successfully complete the Seven Summits Challenge, which involves climbing the highest peak on each of the seven continents.

  • He surpassed the previous national record held by Kaamya Karthikeyan, who completed the Seven Summits at the age of 17 in 2024.
  • The global record remains with Jordan Romero from the United States of America (USA), who achieved the feat at the age of 15 years in 2011.

i.Vishwanath  Karthikey’s mountaineering journey began at age 11 with a trek to Mount Rudugaira in Uttarakhand.
ii.He successfully summited peaks such as Mount Everest (Asia), Aconcagua (South America), Denali (North America), Mount Elbrus (Europe), Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa), Mount Kosciuszko (Australia), and Mount Vinson (Antarctica) .

WMO Report 2025-29: Global Temperature Likely to Exceed 1.5°C in next 5 yearsOn May 28, 2025, the Geneva (Switzerland) based World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released its Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update (2025–2029), projecting a significant likelihood of global temperatures temporarily surpassing the 1.5 degree Celsius (°C) threshold above pre-industrial levels (1850–1900) within the next five years.

  • This projection underscores the escalating urgency for comprehensive climate action to mitigate the adverse effects of global warming.

i.Each year from 2025 to 2029 is expected to witness an average global near-surface temperature rise between 1.2°C and 1.9°C above the 1850–1900 baseline.
ii.There is an 80% chance that at least one year in 2025 to 2029 will surpass 2024 as the warmest year on record.
iii.The current central estimate for the 20-year average warming (2015–2034) is 1.44°C, with a 90% confidence range of 1.22°C to 1.54°C.

Gold loan rules: 9 crucial proposals made by RBI in the draft guidelinesOn May 2025, The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued draft guidelines outlining the procedures for banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) to issue gold loans to individuals.

  • The draft guidelines seek to establish uniform rules and regulations for getting gold loans from banks and NBFCs.
  • The key changes proposed by the RBI include restrictions on eligible collateral, caps on loan amounts, and mandatory procedures for valuation and documentation.

Key Proposals:
i.Loan-to-Value (LTV) Ratio Capped at 75%:

  • This means that if the pledged gold was worth Rs.100, the maximum loan amount would be around Rs.75.
  • This marks a shift from the earlier relaxation during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the LTV was temporarily raised to 80% for certain segments

ii.Proof of Gold Ownership Required:

  • The RBI draft proposes that borrowers must furnish proof of ownership for the gold that will be used as collateral.

In case the original receipts of purchase of gold collateral are not available, a suitable document or declaration obtained from the borrower shall be prepared explaining how the ownership of the collateral has been determined.

SBI Life, Vidyaniti Acquire 4.25% Stake in NHIT for Rs.1,100 Crore
In May 2025, Mumbai(Maharashtra) based SBI Life Insurance Company Limited, a Joint Venture(JV) between State Bank of India (SBI) and France’s BNP Paribas Cardif, and Bengaluru(Karnataka) based Vidyaniti LLP have jointly acquired a 4.25% stake in the National Highways Infra Trust (NHIT) for Rs.1,100.61 crore, marking a significant investment in India’s infrastructure sector.

  • This acquisition was carried out through an open market transaction, reflecting growing investor interest in long-term infrastructure assets.

i.SBI Life Insurance purchased approximately 3.74 crore units, accounting for a 1.93% stake, while Vidyaniti LLP acquired over 4.49 crore units, translating to a 2.3% stake in NHIT.
ii.The units were bought at an average price of Rs.133.57 each, which also matched the price at which the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) divested 8.24 crore units on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
iii.NHIT, launched in 2021 by NHAI, is an Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) aimed at supporting the Government of India(GoI)’s National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP).

  • It facilitates the monetisation of operational infrastructure assets to raise funds for future developments.

RBI Proposes Draft Amendments to KYC Master Directions to Simplify ComplianceIn May 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released a draft circular titled “Updation/Periodic Updation of KYC – Revised Instructions”, proposing amendments to the existing Know Your Customer (KYC) Master Directions(MD).

  • These proposed changes aim to streamline the KYC process, reduce compliance burdens, and enhance customer convenience, particularly for low-risk individuals and beneficiaries of government welfare schemes.

Key Proposals:
i.Banks shall permit customers to update their KYC details at any branch, including non-home branches, for the purpose of reactivating dormant or inoperative accounts.
ii.Upon customer request, banks may facilitate remote KYC updation through Video-based Customer Identification Process (V-CIP), subject to the availability of this facility within the respective bank.
iii.Banks may engage authorised Business Correspondents (BCs) to collect KYC documents and assist customers in the reactivation of inoperative accounts.

Sebi bars former IndusInd Bank CEO, four others from market for insider tradingOn May 28 2025, The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) barred former IndusInd Bank Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sumant Kathpalia and four other senior officials of IndusInd Bank from trading in the securities market, following allegations of insider trading.

  • The other executives named in the order are Arun Khurana (former executive director and deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO)), Sushant Sourav (head of Treasury operations), Rohan Jathanna (head of GMG operations), and Anil Marco Rao (chief administrative officer for consumer banking operations).

Key issue:
i.The action follows an investigation into alleged trades in IndusInd Bank shares made while the executives were in possession of Unpublished Price-Sensitive Information (UPSI).
ii.Jio BlackRock Asset Management (AMC) has received the final approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to start a Mutual Fund (MF) business.

India’s Coal Imports Fall 7.9% to 243.62 MT in FY25
In May 2025, the Ministry of Coal (MoC) announced that India’s coal imports declined by 7.9% to 243.62 Million Tonnes (MT) during the financial year 2024-25 (FY25), compared to 264.53 MT in FY24.

  • This reduction led to foreign exchange savings of approximately USD 7.93 billion (Rs. 60,681.67 crore) in FY25.

i.The Non-Regulated Sector (NRS), which includes cement, sponge iron, and captive power plants (excluding the power sector), recorded the sharpest decline in coal imports with an 8.95% year-on-year(Y-o-Y) decrease during FY25.
ii.While coal-based power generation registered a 3.04% growth in FY25, coal imports for blending purposes by thermal power plants witnessed a significant decline of 41.4% compared to the previous fiscal year.
iii.Initiatives such as Commercial Coal Mining and Mission Coking Coal, launched by the MoC to boost domestic coal production and reduce dependency on imports, resulted in a 5% increase in coal output during FY25 compared to FY24.

Sadhguru Conferred ‘Global Indian of the Year 2025’ Award by CIF
In May 2025, spiritual leader and Founder of Isha Foundation Jagadish JaggiVasudev also known as ‘Sadhguru’ was conferred the ‘Global Indian of the Year 2025’ award by Canada India Foundation (CIF), Canada based Non-Profit Organisation(NPO), during the event took place in Toronto, Canada.

  • The award was presented by Ritesh Malik, Chairperson of CIF, and Sunita Vyas, National Convenor of CIF.
  • The Global Indian of the Year award recognises individuals of Indian origin who have made a global impact through their work.

i.Along with the honour, Sadhguru received a cash prize of Canadian Dollar (CAD) 50,000, which he dedicated to the Cauvery Calling initiative, a movement to revitalise the Cauvery River and support the livelihoods of 84 million people in Southern India.
ii.The award, originally announced in October 2024, recognises Sadhguru’s contributions towards elevating human consciousness and promoting ecological sustainability through the Conscious Planet (CP) movement.
iii.Sadhguru has been teaching yoga since 1982. His Isha foundation was established in 1992 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu (TN).
Note: The CIF Global Indian Award has previously been conferred on eminent personalities including Ratan Tata, Narayana Murthy, and Sudha Murty.

Anil Kumble Appointed as Forest and Wildlife Ambassador of KarnatakaOn May 27, 2025, Former Cricketer Anil Kumble has been appointed as the brand ambassador for the Karnataka Forest and Wildlife Department, to create awareness among the public about forest conservation, forest development, tree preservation, and wildlife conservation.
i.The announcement was made by Eshwar B Khandre, Minister of Forest, Ecology and Environment of Karnataka.

PepsiCo Joins as Official Partner of Formula 1
In May 2025, New York, the United States of America (USA) based PepsiCo has entered into a partnership agreement with London United Kingdom (UK) based Formula One (F1), the highest class of international motorsport for open-wheel single-seater formula racing cars, until 2030.

  • The collaboration aims to enhance fan engagement through on-pack promotions, digital experiences, and unique content.

i.Under the agreement, Heckmondwike (England) based Sting Energy, a beverage brand under PepsiCo, will join F1 as its official Energy drink.
ii.Illinois (USA) based Gatorade, the world’s sports and isotonic drinks brand, will become the official partner of F1 Sprint, bringing its legacy of fueling peak athletic performance.
iii.Texas (USA) based Doritos, wholly owned subsidiary of PepsiCo will become the official savoury snack partner of F1.

India to Host 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships After 44 Years
On May 28, 2025, Doha (Qatar) based Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) announced Ahmedabad, Gujarat, will host the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships from April 1 to 10, 2026. This marks India’s return as host of the prestigious continental event after a 44-year gap, the last being in 1982 in New Delhi (Delhi) during the Asian Games.

  • The tournament will be organized by New Delhi based Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) under the aegis of the AWF.

i.India was awarded the hosting rights in 2024 by the AWF at its annual congress meeting held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
ii.This tournament will be the first Asian Championships to be held under the revised weight categories, introduced by the Lausanne (Switzerland) based International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).

International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2025 – May 29The International Day of United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers is observed globally every year on May 29 to honor the professionalism, dedication, and courage of personnel serving in UN peacekeeping operations and to commemorate those who lost their lives in the cause of peace.

  • May 29, 2025, marks the 77th anniversary of UN Peacekeeping mission.
  • The theme for 2025, “The Future of the Peacekeeping,” emphasizes the need for adaptive strategies to address contemporary challenges in peacekeeping missions.

Background:
i.The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted resolution A/RES/57/129 in 2002, proclaiming May 29 as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
ii.The first UN peacekeeping mission, UNTSO, commenced operations in Palestine on May 29, 1948.
iii.The inaugural International Day of UN Peacekeepers was observed on May 29, 2003.
Note: India is the 4th largest contributor of uniformed personnel to UN Peacekeeping, with over 5,300 military and police personnel deployed in missions such as those in Abyei and the Central African Republic.

World Digestive Health Day 2025 – May 29World Digestive Health Day (WDHD) is observed annually on 29 May to raise global awareness about digestive health and promote preventive measures against gastrointestinal disorders.

  • Initiated by the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO), this day serves as a platform to educate individuals about the significance of maintaining a healthy digestive system.

Theme:
i.The theme for WDHD 2025 is “Your Digestive Health: Nourish to Flourish”.
ii.This theme underscores the vital role of proper nutrition, hydration, and mindful eating habits in supporting a healthy digestive system. By focusing on nourishment, the campaign aims to encourage individuals to adopt dietary practices that promote gut health and overall well-being.
Background: 
i.WDHD was established to commemorate the 45th anniversary of WGO in 2003.

  • The WGO was founded on 29 May 1958, on the last day of the 1st World Congress of Gastroenterology in Washington, the United States of America (USA).

ii.The 1st ever WDHD was observed on 29 May 2004. 
What is Gastroenterology?
i.Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver.
ii.It involves a detailed understanding of the normal action (physiology) of the gastrointestinal organs including the movement of material through the stomach and intestine (motility), the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ.
iii.It includes common and important conditions such as colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn), peptic ulcer disease, colitis, gallbladder and biliary tract disease, nutritional problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and pancreatitis.
Global Digestive Disease Burden:

  • 40% of the global population suffers from functional Gastrointestinal (GI)  disorders (WHO), according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • Colorectal cancer is the 3rd most common cancer worldwide.
  • India-specific: 10–15% prevalence of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS); gastric cancer tops in Northeastern states.

International Everest Day 2025 – May 29International Everest Day is annually observed across the globe on 29th May to commemorate the first-ever successful summit of Mount (Mt) Everest in 1953 by mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal.

  • 29 May 2025 marks the 72nd anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest.
  • Nepal officially declared 29th May as International Everest Day in 2008, following Sir Edmund Hillary’s death.

i.Mount Everest, located in the Himalayas on the Nepal-Tibet border, is the highest mountain on Earth, with an updated official height of 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 feet) as per a 2020 Nepal-China joint survey.

  • Everest, known as “Sagarmatha” in Nepali, meaning “Goddess of the Sky” and “Chomolungma” in Tibetan, meaning “Mother Goddess of the World”.

ii.It was named in 1865 by the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) of Britain after Sir George Everest, the former Surveyor General of India.
iii.The Everest Summiteers Summit 2025 was held in Kathmandu(Nepal), bringing together over 175 national and international Everest climbers.

  • 2025 Everest Marathon, an international high-altitude adventure sports event, is held annually on May 29 from the Mt. Everest Base Camp, traversing the Sherpa trails of the Khumbu Valley.
