Archery: India finished 3rd at GT Open 2024- Jyothi Surekha Vennam won Gold & Abhishek Verma won Silver

GT Open 2024 Jyothi Surekha Vennam clinches gold, Abhishek Verma wins silverIndia finished 3rd on the medal tally with 2 medals (1 Gold and 1 silver) at the GT Open 2024 – Indoor World Series (IWS) 250 event held from 15th to 17th November 2024 in Strassen, Luxembourg. Indian archer Jyothi Surekha Vennam won the Gold medal in the Women’s Compound event and Abhishek Verma won the silver medal in the Men’s compound event.

  • The Netherlands topped the medal tally with 2 gold medals followed by Croatia at 2nd rank with 3 medals (1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze). South Korea and India were jointly ranked 3rd with 2 medals (1 Gold and 1 Silver) each.

GT Open 2024 – IWS Stage 2:

i.GT Open 2024 is the 2nd event of the IWS 2024-2025. The 1st event of IWS 2025 was the Swiss Open 2024 held from 1st to 3rd November 2024 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

ii.The Indoor Archery World Series is World Archery’s international 18-metre circuit which includes six events from November 2024 and March 2025.

  • The event is being conducted across 4 categories: recurve men, recurve women, compound men and compound women.

iv.The Indoor Archery World Series Finals will be held in Las Vegas (USA) on Sunday 9 March 2025

Key Points:

i.Jyothi’s Gold at GT Open marks her 2nd medal in indoor events in 2024. She previously won the bronze in the JVD Open championship held at Eindhoven, the Netherlands in November 2024.

ii.Abhishek Verma has become the 1st Indian to hit a perfect 600 in the qualification round of an international event to qualify as the highest-ranked player.

iii. Under the Men’s compound category, Mike Schlosser (Netherlands) won the gold medal and Nicholas Girard (France) won the bronze medal.

iv.Under the women’s compound category, Sarah Prieels (Belgium) won the silver and Elisa Roner (Italy) won the bronze medal.

About Jyothi Surekha Vennam:

i.Jyothi Vennam won 3 silver medals in the 2021 World Archery Championships becoming the first Indian to do so and has won 1 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals in the World Archery Championships.

ii.In January 2022, she secured the top spot in the Women’s Open Pro event at the Lancaster Archery Classic held near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States.

iii. In 2023, Jyoti won 3 gold medals in the 2022 Asian Games becoming the first Indian to win multiple gold medals in archery.

iv.She also won the gold medal in the individual and mixed team event at the 2024 Archery World Cup in Shanghai, China.

About Abhishek Verma:

i.Abhishek Verma won the gold medal at the Archery World Cup 2023 stage 3 in Medellin, Colombia.

  • He won 2 individual golds in the 2021 Paris World Cup and the 2015 Wroclaw Archery World Cup.

ii.He won a gold medal in the Compound archery team finals of the Asian Games 2023.

iii.He has also a gold in the compound mixed team event with Jyothi Surekha Vennam, in the Archery World Cup 2022 held in Paris, France.
