ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024 held in Kazakhstan: India Finished 7th with 3 Bronze

27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024Indian Table Tennis contingents won 3 bronze medals and finished 7th on the Medal tally of the 27th edition of International Table Tennis Federation  (ITTF) Asian Table Tennis Championships (2024).

The 2024 championship was held from 7th to 13th October 2024 at the Beeline Arena in Astana, Kazakhstan. 

  • Japan topped the Medal tally with 8 medals (3 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze) followed by China with 5 medals (2 Gold; 2 Silver and 1 Bronze) and North Korea with 3 medals (1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze).

Ayhika Mukherjee & Sutirtha Mukherjee won Bronze in Women’s Doubles: 

Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee (World Rank 15 in women’s doubles) won the bronze medal in Women’s doubles. This marks India’s first ever medal in Women’s doubles category at Asian Table Tennis Championship.

i.The duo were defeated by the Japan’s Miwa Harimoto and Miyuu Kihara (World Rank 33) in the semifinals.

ii.The duo became the first all-India women’s doubles pair from India to win a medal at the competition.

  • In 1952, India’s Gool Nasikwala won the gold medal in the women’s doubles paired with Japan’s Yoshiko Tanaka in the inaugural edition of the tournament.

Points to note: 

i.In 2023, Ayhika and Sutirtha became the first Indians to win women’s doubles title at the WTT Contender Tunis 2023 (Tunisia).

ii.The duo has previously won the bronze medal in women’s doubles at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

India won Bronze in Women’s Team and Men’s team events: 

i.The Indian women’s team featuring Sreeja Akula; Manika Batra; Sutirtha Mukherjee; Ayhika Mukherjee; and Diya Chitale won the bronze in Women’s team event. India lost 1-3 to Japan in the semifinals.

  • It is the first-ever medal in the women’s team event for India event since the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) started organising the competition in 1972.

ii.The Indian men’s team featuring Sharath Kamal; Manav Thakkar; Sathiyan Gnanasekaran; Harmeet Desai; and Manush Shah won the  bronze in Men’s team event.

  • This marks the third straight bronze medal.

i.The Asian Table Tennis Championships is a biennial table tennis tournament, which is regarded as a continental championship by International Table Tennis Federation.

ii.From 1952 to 1972, the tournament was organized by the Table Tennis Federation of Asia.

iii.Since 1972, The event has been organised by the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU).
