Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Indian Navy (IN) made an official 4-day visit to Bangladesh from 1 to 4 July 2024, to consolidate the bilateral defence engagement and explore new areas of maritime cooperation.
- This is Admiral Tripathi’s 1st official foreign visit since assuming command as the 26th CNS in April 2024.
- He met with the newly-appointed Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army, General Waker–Uz-Zaman in Dhaka, Bangladesh during his visit.
Key Engagements:
i.Admiral Tripathi held bilateral discussions with his counterpart, Bangladesh Navy Chief Admiral M Nazmul Hassan in Dhaka.He also interacted with other senior leadership of the Bangladesh Government.
ii.They discussed strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new areas of cooperation between the armed forces of both countries.
Bangladesh Navy Signs Contract with India’s GRSE for ‘Made In India’ 800 Tons Ocean Going Tug
The Bangladesh Navy signed a contract with India’s Garden Reach Shipbuilding and Engineers Ltd (GRSE), for constructing a ‘Made in India’ 800 tons Ocean Going Tug, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This contract is part of the Line of Credit (LOC) offered by India to Bangladesh.
- As per GRSE, the ship worth approximately USD 21 million will be delivered to Bangladesh within 24 months as per the contract.
Note: GRSE is a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Department of Defence Production (DDP), Ministry of Defence (MoD), Government of India (GoI).
Key People: Commander Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, was present during the signing of the agreement, Commodore A K M Maruf Hassan, Director Purchase (Navy), Directorate General Defence Purchase, Ministry of Defence (MoD) was present on behalf of Bangladesh.
Capabilities of the Oceangoing Tug:
i.Towing ships at sea, assisting during berthing, casting off, and turning.
ii.Rescue and salvage operations.
iii.Firefighting support and limited pollution control.
iv.Operates at sea state 5 with dynamic positioning – 2 system capability.
- This advanced computer-controlled system allows a ship to maintain its heading and position without using mooring lines or anchors.
Features:
i.The tug’s Length overall (LOA) will be nearly 61 metres (m), and the vessel will be about 15.80 m wide with a depth of nearly 6.80 m.
ii.The ship’s maximum speed with a full load will be at least 13 knots.
