Martyrs’ Day - January 30 2022

Martyrs Day, also known as Shaheedi Diwas, is annually observed across India on 30th January to pay respect to the martyrs who lost their lives during India’s freedom struggle. The day also marks the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

  • 30th January 2022 marks the 74th Anniversary of the Martyrdom Day of Mahatma Gandhi. 

Shaheedi Diwas or Martyrs Day is observed across India on two days 30th January and 23rd March.

  • 23rd March pays homage to the freedom fighters, Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar, who were hanged to death by the British. 

Mahatma Gandhi:

i.Mahatma Gandhi was born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on 2nd October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. 

ii.He was a politician, leader, activist, lawyer who had played an important role in India’s struggle for freedom. 

iii.He was the primary leader of India’s independence movement and also the architect of a form of non-violent civil disobedience. 

iv.He was assassinated on 30th January 1948 in the compound of Birla House, New Delhi, Delhi by Nathuram Vinayak Godse. 

Honours:

The government of India has launched the International Gandhi Peace Prize in 1995 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Mohandas Gandhi.

Highlights:

On the occasion of the 74th Martyrs Day, Amit Shah, Minister of Home Affairs, has unveiled the mural of Mahatma Gandhi at the Sabarmati Riverfront, Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The Mural was installed by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is made of clay 2975 Kulkads by 75 trained potters from across India.Â
