10 Products from 8 States got Geographical IndicationTagGeographical Indication Registry(Chennai, Tamil Nadu-TN) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry(MoCI), has awarded geographical indication (GI) tags to 10 distinct products from 8 states.

Key Points:

i.The Cuttack Silver Filigree(Chandi Tarakasi) is a type of super-finely designed art wire in silver. Filigree refers to decoration done from gold or silver wire

  • In Odia Language, Tara means wire and Kasi means to design.

ii.Majuli masks of Assam are made in different varieties and sizes as they are mainly divided into three different categories.

  • Mask making or ‘Mukha Shilpa’ is one of the most famous traditional crafts practiced in Majuli, the world’s largest inhabited river island
  • It has been an integral part of the ‘Sattriya’ culture of Assam.

iii. Assam Majuli Manuscript Paintings illustrates numerous stories and chapters taken from the epics Ramayana, Mahabharata, and all subjects from the Bhagavata Purana.

iv.Gujarat’s Ambaji White Marble is formed when limestone is re-crystallised under the earth’s crust due to intense pressure and heat.

v.Kutch Rogan Craft is a painted textile craft, influenced by Persian art, and the word Rogan itself means oil-based in Persian.

  • Rogan-painted cloth is used for making pillow covers, tablecloths, wall hangings, file folders, decorative pieces, and even sarees.

vi.Narasapur crochet lace Products is a unique design and good quality crochet craft made in Narasapur in the West Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh.

  • The products include Table Cover, Decorative Item, Cushion Covers, Bed Spread, Bag and more.

vii.Ratlam Riyawan Lahsun is a Garlic variety named after Riyawan village in Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh.

viii.The Hyderabad Lac Bangles crafted from lacquer derived from resin, undergo a meticulous process like being melted in furnaces before being embellished with crystals, beads, or mirrors.

  • This is the second GI tag for a Hyderabad product after Haleem(2010).

ix.Tripura Risa textile is a handwoven cloth used a female upper garment, headgear, stole, or a gift to express respect.

x.The Bengal Muslin is a traditional handloom craft made up of cotton which is spun to create threads that maintain tensile strength at counts(300 to 600)i.e higher than any other cotton product.

About GI tag:

i.GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin or location, linking its qualities or reputation directly to that origin.

  • It is a type of intellectual property right (IPR) that identifies the geographical origin of a product.

ii.India enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999  has came into force with effect from 15th September 2003.

iii.The act provides registration and better protection of geographical indications, preserving the heritage and uniqueness of products linked to specific geographic regions.

Note: Darjeeling Tea was the first product to be registered in India as GI tag in 2004 and the registration is valid up to 2033.
