‘Wahrew Bridge’ – India’s Longest Steel Arch Bridge Inaugurated at MeghalayaMeghalaya-CM-inaugurates-India's-longest-road-arch-bridgeOn January 22, 2021, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma inaugurated India’s Longest Steel Arch Bridge ‘Wahrew Bridge’ at Tharia Village in Meghalaya. The 169 metre long bridge connects Bholaganj & Sohbar to Nongjri in East Khasi Hills and runs over the river Wahrew.
The Bridge was dedicated to Dr Donkupar Roy, Former Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
i.Estimated cost – INR 49.395 Crore, which was allocated under the Non Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) Scheme of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (M-DoNER).
ii.Project was sanctioned in 2013 and work started on the bridge in 2014.

  • It is expected to increase Tourism & Economic activities in Meghalaya.
  • The bridge will enhance trade with Bangladesh as the road is linked to Bholaganj Land Custom Station, which is among the 27 Land Customs Stations appointed for facilitating trade with Bangladesh.

i.National Non-communicable Disease Monitoring Survey (NNMS):

  • The survey was conducted during the period of 2017-18, Base Year for measuring the progress is 2010.
  • Objective – To collect data on key indicators such as risk factors, select NCDs & health systems response required for National NCD monitoring framework & NCD Action Plan.
  • Two in Five adults had three or more risk factors for NCDs

ii.Framework for use of Telemedicine:

  • Harsh Vardhan also release Framework for Telemedicine use in Management of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease & Stroke in India.

India & Bangladesh sign MoU for Launching Pupil Satellite to be developed by Students from both countriesIndo-Bangladesh-sign-MoU-on-joint-student-satelliteIn order to celebrate the 50 years of India-Bangladesh friendship & the 100th Birth Anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, India & Bangladesh have signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to design & launch the Pupil  Satellite TV for PC  to be completely developed by Students from both countries.
The MoU was signed between SpaceKidz India (SKI) & Global Law Thinkers Society, an Global Youth Organization of Bangladesh.

  • SKI will train 5 college students from Bangladesh in Satellite systems and technology.
  • The satellite is set to be launched through ISRO’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in 2021.
  • The Training programme for students is expected to start in April or May, 2021.

“Ayu Samvad”, Public Awareness Campaign on Ayurveda & COVID-19 Pandemic Organised by AIIA

The “Ayu Samvad” (My Health My Responsibility), one of the largest public awareness campaigns on Ayurveda and COVID-19 pandemic (in the form of lecture series) is organised by All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, an apex Ayurveda institute under the Ministry of AYUSH, from 26th January 2021 to 30th March 2021. 

  • The campaign is supported by the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH). 
  • This campaign is organised in pursuance to the 5th Ayurveda Day theme “Ayurveda for COVID-19 Pandemic”. 
  • Umesh Tagade Joint Director AIIA is the Nodal officer of this programme.

i.To educate the community in an authentic way and make them feel responsible for their own health.
ii.To create awareness about the theme “Ayurveda for COVID-19 pandemic” among the common people.
iii.The campaign focuses on the Role of Preventive, Promotive, Curative and Rehabilitation in Management of COVID 19 through Ayurveda.
iv.To ensure uniformity in information through structures PPT delivered to 1 crore targets across India through 5 lakh lectures from 26th January to 30th March 2021.
Features of the campaign:
i.AIIA has organized an online training of trainers program on Ayush Virtual Convention Centre (AVCC), digital communication platform of the Ministry of AYUSH from 18th January to 21st January 2021.
ii.The campaign will be monitored through the State AYUSH Directors & National AYUSH Mission(NAM) team.
iii.The report of the Documentation part of lectures and various activities will be submitted by the state AYUSH Director in the first week of May 2021.

CAS 2021 Hosted by Netherlands; PM Narendra Modi Addressed the SummitPrime-Minister-addressed-Climate-Adaptation-Summit-2021i.On January 25, 2021, the Government of Netherlands hosted a virtual international Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS Online) 2021 with a support of Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) from Amsterdam, Netherlands.
ii.The summit saw the launch of a comprehensive Adaptation Action Agenda (AAA) which set out commitments to accelerate action on climate adaptation through partnership by promoting, guiding, monitoring and sharing experience.
iii.There were four overarching themes of CAS 2021 viz. Accelerating African Adaptation, Finance & Investment, Youth Leadership, and Locally Led Adaptation.
iv.From India, the summit was addressed by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.

Indian billionaires Increased their Wealth by 35% during the lockdown: Oxfam reportIndian-billionaires-increased-their-wealth-by-35%-during-the-lockdowni.In accordance with the Indian supplement of Oxfam report “The Inequality Virus”, the top 100 Indian  billionaires increased their wealth by 35% during the lockdown to Rs 12,97,822 crore.
ii.With this amount, a cheque of Rs 94,045 can be provided to 138 million poorest Indians.
iii.The report was released on the opening day of the World Economic Forum’s ‘Davos Dialogues’.
iv.Notably, the wealth of Indian billionaires increased by 90% since 2009 to $422.9 billion.

UNGA adopts resolution to safeguard religious sites across the worldUNGA-adopts-resolution-to-safeguard-religious-sites-across-the-world

On 21st January, 2021, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution titled “Promoting a culture of peace and tolerance to safeguard religious sites”. The resolution was proposed by Saudi Arabia and was co-sponsored by Arab nations including Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Yemen, Bahrain, Sudan, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Palestine.India also supported the resolution.

Highlights of Resolution:

i.The resolution condemns offences or mockery against religious sites and symbols, rejects the use of violence to express any point of view.

ii.It aims to develop a culture of peace as a shield against extremism and intolerance.

iii.It also condemns forcible conversions of religions.

iv.It also condemned any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence, and urged States to take effective measures to combat such incidents.

Key Points:

i.Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to convene a conference to help spearhead progress on implementing the United Nations Plan of Action to Safeguard Religious Sites.

ii.To enhance the plan, released in September 2019, various measures are taken focused on prevention, preparedness and response.

Overseas investment by Indian companies fell 42% to $1.45 billion in Dec 2020Overseas-investment-by-Indian-companies-dips-42%-to-$1i.In accordance with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, overseas investment by domestic firms fell by over 42% to USD 1.45 billion in December 2020 in comparison to USD 2.51 billion in December 2019.
ii.Of the total FDI investment, USD 775.41 million was in the form of equity infusion, USD 382.91 million was in the form of loan, and USD 287.63 million was in the form of issuance of guarantee.
iii. On January 25, 2021, RBI released the 3rd booklet on Payment Systems titled “Payment and Settlement Systems in India- Journey in the Second Decade of the Millennium 2010-20”described the possibility of a digital version of fiat currency.
The earlier Booklets on Payment Systems were released in the years 1998 and 2008.

IDFC First Bank Enters into Credit Card Business

IDFC First Bank has entered the credit card business. The bank will charge interest  between 9% and 36% on revolving credit, based on the customer’s track record, credit score, relationship with the bank  and internal scoring. In India the credit card businesses charge  about 40% interest per annum on revolving credit which is about 3.5% per month. It will not charge interest on cash withdrawals during the 45-day free credit period. No annual charge is required for this credit credit. The reward points of the card will not have any expiry.


India’s GDP Growth to Contract by 8% in FY21: IMFGDP shrinking at sharper 8i.The International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its latest World Economic Outlook, titled ‘Policy Support and Vaccines Expected to Lift Activity’ has projected India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to contract by 8%(-8%) in FY20-21.

  • Earlier in its October’s forecast, this estimate was -10.3%.

ii.It also projected India’s GDP growth at 11.5% in FY 21-22, which makes the country the only major economy of the world to register a double-digit growth 2021 amid the COVID-19.

iii.The median growth forecast for agriculture and allied activities is pegged at 3.5% growth for 2020-21.

  • Agriculture is the only sector among three main sectors of Indian economy namely, Industry and services that has registered a growth in 2020-21.

Giuseppe Conte Italian Prime Minister Resigned After Losing the Senate MajorityItaly Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte resignsOn 26th January 2021, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, an independent technocrat, resigned after losing the overall majority in the senate(upper house of the parliament) following the dispute regarding the spending during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reason for resignation:
i.Former PM Matteo Renzi of Liberal Italia Viva party pulled out from the coalition with a list of demands.
ii.His main objection was Conte’s plan to spend €209bn (£186bn; $254bn) of EU recovery funds, which was a part of a €750bn EU rescue for the Covid crisis.
iii.PM Conte won the vote of confidence in the Chamber of Deputies (lower house) and then he also won the Senate vote but did not have an absolute majority.
iv.The parties were divided over spending in the coronavirus crisis, which resulted in the lack of majority in the senate.

DRDO with BEL, BDL Test Launched Akash-NG Missile;Integrated Weapons System Design Centre Inaugurated in HyderabadDRDO conducts successful maiden test launch of Akash-NG missilei.On January 25-26, 2021, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden launch of Akash-NG (New Generation) Surface to Air Missile (SAM) from Integrated Test Range of Balasore, off the coast of Odisha, along with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) & Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). It has strike range of 30 km.
ii.The facility is to enhance the capability in design and development of command and control systems for Surface-to-Air Missile systems and Ballistic Missile Defence systems.
iii.The missile has been developed for the Indian Air Force (IAF) use with an aim of intercepting high maneuvering low Radar cross-section (RCS) aerial threats.
iv.The missile is developed by the DRDO laboratory, Research Centre Imarat (RCI). The missile is developed with 96% indigenous content.

ITBP wins 10th IHAI National Ice Hockey Championships held at Gulmarg, J&KIndo-Tibetan Border Police wins IHAI National Ice Hockey Championship in GulmargIndo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) won the 10th Ice Hockey Association of India (IHAI) National Ice Hockey Championships by defeating Ladakh in the finals held at Gulmarg Ice Rink, Gulmarg Development Authority, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).
i.The event was held from January 16-22, 2021 and was organized by IHAI.

  • Around 8 Ice Hockey teams including teams from Delhi, Maharashtra, Indian Army participated in the Championships.

ii.ITBP is one of India’s Primary Border Patrol Organizations.

  • It is responsible for Managing India’s borders along China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
  • It is one of the 7 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) of India.

Former India Goalkeeper Prasanta Dora Passed Away at 45 Former India goalie Prasanta Dora passes awayOn 26th January 2021, Prasanta Dora former Indian Footballer and Goalie passed away at the age of 45 due to Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis’, a rare blood disease in Kolkata, West Bengal. He was born on 4th January 1976 in Kolkata, West Bengal.

i.Prasanta Dora made his national debut in 1999 during the Olympic qualifiers against Thailand.
ii.He represented India in The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship and South Asian Federation (SAF) Games and made 5 appearances.
iii.He represented Bengal as goalkeeper in the Santosh Trophy in 1997-1998 and 1999.
iv.He has played for clubs like Tollygunge Agragami, Calcutta Port Trust, Mohammedan Sporting, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.
v.His brother Hemanta Dora is also a former goalkeeper of Indian Football team.


Overview of 72nd Republic Day of India – 26 January, 202172nd Republic DayOn January 26, 2021 India celebrated its 72nd Republic Day. On this date, in 1950 the Constitution of India came into effect by replacing the Government of India Act (1935).

  • The Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November, 1949 and came into effect on 26th January, 1950 making India a fully democratic republic.
  • For the 1st time, a 122-member Bangladeshi Triservice force Contingent participated in the Republic Day Parade.
  • On the eve of 72nd Republic Day Celebration i.e 26th January, 2021, President Ram Nath Kovind approved 455 Gallantry awards & other Defence decorations to Armed Forces personnel.
  • UT of Ladakh presented its First-ever Tableau at the Republic Day Parade, since its formation in 2019.

Chief Guest of 72nd Republic Day Celebrations:
This is the 1st time in 55 years that the Republic Day Celebrations took place without a Chief Guest.

  • The last time a Republic Day Celebration was held without a Chief Guest was in 1966.

Maharashtra launches ‘jail tourism’ initiative at Pune’s Yerawada jail:

International Customs Day 2021 – 26th January International Customs Day 2021i.International Customs Day(ICD) is annually celebrated across the globe on 26th January to recognise the contributions and roles of the customs officials and agencies in maintaining border security.
ii.The World Customs Organization(WCO) dedicated the International Customs Day 2021 is dedicated to the efforts of the customs to emerge from the pandemic situation and its efforts towards strengthening the global supply chain to support the people and business.
iii.The theme of the 2021 ICD is “Customs bolstering Recovery, Renewal and Resilience for a sustainable supply chain”

International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust 2021 – 27th January International Holocausti.United Nations(UN)’s International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust (International Holocaust Remembrance Day) is annually observed across the globe on 27th January to commemorate the victims of the Tragedy of Holocaust during the World War II.  The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945.
ii.The year 2021 marks the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
iii.The theme of 2021 International Holocaust Remembrance Day is “Facing the Aftermath: Recovery and Reconstitution after the Holocaust”.
iv.The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/60/7 on 1st November 2005 to established the United Nations Outreach Programme on Holocaust and proclaimed the 27th January of every year as the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
