‘Wahrew Bridge’ – India’s Longest Steel Arch Bridge Inaugurated at MeghalayaOn January 22, 2021, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma inaugurated India’s Longest Steel Arch Bridge ‘Wahrew Bridge’ at Tharia Village in Meghalaya. The 169 metre long bridge connects Bholaganj & Sohbar to Nongjri in East Khasi Hills and runs over the river Wahrew.
The Bridge was dedicated to Dr Donkupar Roy, Former Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
i.Estimated cost – INR 49.395 Crore, which was allocated under the Non Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) Scheme of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (M-DoNER).
ii.Project was sanctioned in 2013 and work started on the bridge in 2014.
- It is expected to increase Tourism & Economic activities in Meghalaya.
- The bridge will enhance trade with Bangladesh as the road is linked to Bholaganj Land Custom Station, which is among the 27 Land Customs Stations appointed for facilitating trade with Bangladesh.

- National Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Monitoring Survey (NNMS) 2017-18, 1st of its kind complete survey on NCDs using standardised tools & methods.

- The survey was conducted during the period of 2017-18, Base Year for measuring the progress is 2010.

- Two in Five adults had three or more risk factors for NCDs

India & Bangladesh sign MoU for Launching Pupil Satellite to be developed by Students from both countriesIn order to celebrate the 50 years of India-Bangladesh friendship & the 100th Birth Anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, India & Bangladesh have signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to design & launch the Pupil Satellite TV for PC to be completely developed by Students from both countries.
The MoU was signed between SpaceKidz India (SKI) & Global Law Thinkers Society, an Global Youth Organization of Bangladesh.
- SKI will train 5 college students from Bangladesh in Satellite systems and technology.
- The satellite is set to be launched through ISRO’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in 2021.

“Ayu Samvad”, Public Awareness Campaign on Ayurveda & COVID-19 Pandemic Organised by AIIA
The “Ayu Samvad” (My Health My Responsibility), one of the largest public awareness campaigns on Ayurveda and COVID-19 pandemic (in the form of lecture series) is organised by All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, an apex Ayurveda institute under the Ministry of AYUSH, from 26th January 2021 to 30th March 2021.
- The campaign is supported by the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH).
- This campaign is organised in pursuance to the 5th Ayurveda Day theme “Ayurveda for COVID-19 Pandemic”.
- Umesh Tagade Joint Director AIIA is the Nodal officer of this programme.
Objective:
i.To educate the community in an authentic way and make them feel responsible for their own health.

CAS 2021 Hosted by Netherlands; PM Narendra Modi Addressed the Summiti.On January 25, 2021, the Government of Netherlands hosted a virtual international Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS Online) 2021 with a support of Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) from Amsterdam, Netherlands.
ii.The summit saw the launch of a comprehensive Adaptation Action Agenda (AAA) which set out commitments to accelerate action on climate adaptation through partnership by promoting, guiding, monitoring and sharing experience.
iii.There were four overarching themes of CAS 2021 viz. Accelerating African Adaptation, Finance & Investment, Youth Leadership, and Locally Led Adaptation.

Indian billionaires Increased their Wealth by 35% during the lockdown: Oxfam reporti.In accordance with the Indian supplement of Oxfam report “The Inequality Virus”, the top 100 Indian billionaires increased their wealth by 35% during the lockdown to Rs 12,97,822 crore.
ii.With this amount, a cheque of Rs 94,045 can be provided to 138 million poorest Indians.
iii.The report was released on the opening day of the World Economic Forum’s ‘Davos Dialogues’.
iv.Notably, the wealth of Indian billionaires increased by 90% since 2009 to $422.9 billion.

UNGA adopts resolution to safeguard religious sites across the world
On 21st January, 2021, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution titled “Promoting a culture of peace and tolerance to safeguard religious sites”. The resolution was proposed by Saudi Arabia and was co-sponsored by Arab nations including Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Yemen, Bahrain, Sudan, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Palestine.India also supported the resolution.
Highlights of Resolution:
i.The resolution condemns offences or mockery against religious sites and symbols, rejects the use of violence to express any point of view.
ii.It aims to develop a culture of peace as a shield against extremism and intolerance.
iii.It also condemns forcible conversions of religions.
iv.It also condemned any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence, and urged States to take effective measures to combat such incidents.

i.Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to convene a conference to help spearhead progress on implementing the United Nations Plan of Action to Safeguard Religious Sites.

Overseas investment by Indian companies fell 42% to $1.45 billion in Dec 2020i.In accordance with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, overseas investment by domestic firms fell by over 42% to USD 1.45 billion in December 2020 in comparison to USD 2.51 billion in December 2019.
ii.Of the total FDI investment, USD 775.41 million was in the form of equity infusion, USD 382.91 million was in the form of loan, and USD 287.63 million was in the form of issuance of guarantee.
iii. On January 25, 2021, RBI released the 3rd booklet on Payment Systems titled “Payment and Settlement Systems in India- Journey in the Second Decade of the Millennium 2010-20”described the possibility of a digital version of fiat currency.
The earlier Booklets on Payment Systems were released in the years 1998 and 2008.

IDFC First Bank Enters into Credit Card Business
IDFC First Bank has entered the credit card business. The bank will charge interest between 9% and 36% on revolving credit, based on the customer’s track record, credit score, relationship with the bank and internal scoring. In India the credit card businesses charge about 40% interest per annum on revolving credit which is about 3.5% per month. It will not charge interest on cash withdrawals during the 45-day free credit period. No annual charge is required for this credit credit. The reward points of the card will not have any expiry.

India’s GDP Growth to Contract by 8% in FY21: IMFi.The International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its latest World Economic Outlook, titled ‘Policy Support and Vaccines Expected to Lift Activity’ has projected India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to contract by 8%(-8%) in FY20-21.
- Earlier in its October’s forecast, this estimate was -10.3%.
ii.It also projected India’s GDP growth at 11.5% in FY 21-22, which makes the country the only major economy of the world to register a double-digit growth 2021 amid the COVID-19.

Giuseppe Conte Italian Prime Minister Resigned After Losing the Senate MajorityOn 26th January 2021, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, an independent technocrat, resigned after losing the overall majority in the senate(upper house of the parliament) following the dispute regarding the spending during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reason for resignation:
i.Former PM Matteo Renzi of Liberal Italia Viva party pulled out from the coalition with a list of demands.
ii.His main objection was Conte’s plan to spend €209bn (£186bn; $254bn) of EU recovery funds, which was a part of a €750bn EU rescue for the Covid crisis.
iii.PM Conte won the vote of confidence in the Chamber of Deputies (lower house) and then he also won the Senate vote but did not have an absolute majority.
iv.The parties were divided over spending in the coronavirus crisis, which resulted in the lack of majority in the senate.

DRDO with BEL, BDL Test Launched Akash-NG Missile;Integrated Weapons System Design Centre Inaugurated in Hyderabadi.On January 25-26, 2021, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden launch of Akash-NG (New Generation) Surface to Air Missile (SAM) from Integrated Test Range of Balasore, off the coast of Odisha, along with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) & Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). It has strike range of 30 km.
ii.The facility is to enhance the capability in design and development of command and control systems for Surface-to-Air Missile systems and Ballistic Missile Defence systems.
iii.The missile has been developed for the Indian Air Force (IAF) use with an aim of intercepting high maneuvering low Radar cross-section (RCS) aerial threats.
iv.The missile is developed by the DRDO laboratory, Research Centre Imarat (RCI). The missile is developed with 96% indigenous content.

Former India Goalkeeper Prasanta Dora Passed Away at 45 On 26th January 2021, Prasanta Dora former Indian Footballer and Goalie passed away at the age of 45 due to Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis’, a rare blood disease in Kolkata, West Bengal. He was born on 4th January 1976 in Kolkata, West Bengal.

International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust 2021 – 27th January i.United Nations(UN)’s International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust (International Holocaust Remembrance Day) is annually observed across the globe on 27th January to commemorate the victims of the Tragedy of Holocaust during the World War II. The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945.
ii.The year 2021 marks the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
iii.The theme of 2021 International Holocaust Remembrance Day is “Facing the Aftermath: Recovery and Reconstitution after the Holocaust”.
iv.The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/60/7 on 1st November 2005 to established the United Nations Outreach Programme on Holocaust and proclaimed the 27th January of every year as the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
