UNESCO ties up with Rajasthan to promote state’s intangible cultural heritage
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO), a specialized agency of the United Nations based in Paris, France has joined hands with Rajasthan state government to further enhance music, art and craft forms, and other intangible cultural heritage of the state.
i. According to the MoU, now UNESCO with an NGO, Contact Base will build a special tourist circuit in Jodhpur, Bikaner, Barmer and Jaisalmer for around three-and-a-half years. Govt. launches POSHAN Maah 2019 campaign to promote ‘eat right India movement’
On September 5, 2019, the Union Health Minister Shri Harsh Vardhan launched mass media campaign POSHAN Maah (nutrition campaign) 2019 to promote the “eat right India movement” (launched 10th July 2018) to improve public health and combat negative nutritional trends. The campaign will have weekly themes in the upcoming 365 days. This movement is aligned with the government’s flagship public health programmes such as POSHAN Abhiyaan, Anemia Mukt Bharat, Ayushman Bharat Yojana, and Swachh Bharat Mission. Other launches:
i. FSSAI: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has designed the eat right quiz which could be downloaded from Amazon Alexa skill store to enhance nutritional knowledge. It has also launched ‘Eat Right Online Store’ offering goods carrying campaign messages. The three major pillars for the programare : Eat Safe, Eat Healthy and Eat Sustainably.
ii.Online course: In order to combat the malnourished cases, a 4-week online course was also launched to train the front line health workers. The course focuses on the importance of nutrition in the first 1000 days of a child’s birth, food safety measures, etc.
iii. Logo: Logo for eating right India movement was launched. It represents a healthy plate in the logo.
Ladakh’s first ever Mobile Science Exhibition (SCIENCE EXPLORER) of NCSM in Leh flagged off by Shri Prahlad Singh Patel
On September 5, 2019, first-ever Mobile Science Exhibition (SCIENCE EXPLORER) was flagged off in Leh, Ladakh by Union culture and tourism minister (Independent charge) Shri Prahlad Singh Patel and would be available as first of its kind in the entire Ladakh region. He also launched 25 new Mobile Science Exhibition(MSE) buses for Aspirational Districts across the country in order to reach the unserved/unreached areas and it is fully funded by the culture ministry. i. First MSE programme: The program was originally launched as, Mobile Science Museum (MSM) in 17 November 1965 and is still the longest-running outreach programme of National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) with mission “If the people cannot visit the museum, let the museum visit the people at their doorsteps.” In 1965 it was first launched at Ramakrishna Mission Boys’ School, Narendrapur, near Kolkata with the theme “Our Familiar Electricity”.
ii. First MSE bus: The first MSE bus was launched in 1966 from Birla Industrial and Technological Museum(BITM), Kolkata.
iii. Other science programmes: Various programs like sky Observation programme through telescope, science films show, Science Demonstration Lectures etcwere also launched along with the MSE program.
iv. MSE objective in Ladakh: Create awareness, popularize, and inspire scientific knowledge to students and the general public.

Kochi to host 22nd India International Seafood Show after 12 years
The 22nd edition of the India International Seafood Show (IISS) which is one of the largest seafood fairs in Asia, is to be hosted by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) in association with Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) in Kochi (known as queen of Arabian sea) at Hotel Grand Hyatt from February 7-9, in 2020. This biennial show would be Kochi’s first hosting after 12 years.Key points
i. First and last show: The first Seafood Show was held in Mumbai in 1973 and the 21st/previous edition of the IISS was held in Margao, Goa in 2018.
ii. This 22nd edition includes delegates such as seafood processors, buyers, and stakeholders from other related sectors.

An upcoming movie featuring Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan and Paresh Rawal named Coolie No. 1 is the first Bollywood film to go plastic-free. The film, directed by David Dhawan and produced by Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky Bhagnani and Deepshika Deshmukh will be released on May 1, 2020.

Overview of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Vladivostok, Russia
Prime Minister (PM) of India, Shri Narendra Modi visited Vladivostok, Russia on September 4-5, 2019. It was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Far East Region of Russia. He participated as the Chief Guest at the 5th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) for 2019 at the invitation of President of the Russian Federation Mr Vladimir Putin and also attended the 20th India-Russia Annual Summit for 2019.
i. India and Russia have signed 30 MoUs to promote trade and investment. Among those, 16 were in the private sector and the remaining 14 in government-to-government sector.
ii. India welcomed Russia’s initiative to hold the Second International Tiger Conservation Forum in 2022. First forum was held in Saint-Petersburg, Russia in 2010.

WHO to eliminate measles & rubella by South-East Asia region sets targets 2023
In a bid to prevent deaths and disabilities, Member countries of WHO (World Health Organisation) South-East Asia Region have vowed to eradicate the highly infectious childhood killers diseases of measles & rubella by 2023.
i. Setting the goal of elimination of both these diseases was taken during the 72nd session of the Regional Committee of southeast Asia of WHO in New Delhi.
ii. Elimination of measles and rubella has been a priority since 2014. 5 countries have successfully eliminated measles. These include Bhutan, DPR Korea, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Timor-Leste. 15th Indo-US military training exercise ‘Yudh Abhyas’ 2019 commenced
2 Week Indo-US defence corporation’s 15th edition of biggest joint military exercise ‘Yudh Abhyas’ 2019 between Indian and the United States(US) at Lewis McChord Joint Airforce Base,Washington(US) has commenced on september 5, 2019 and will continue till 18th September.Key points
i. Objective: To facilitate interoperability between two nations and train at Battalion level as well as brigade level.
ii. Representations: During the opening ceremony, the US side was represented by a company of 5-20 Infantry Battalion of the US Army and the Indian side was represented by The Assam Regiment. The Indian army were welcomed by Major General of US, Xavier Brunsen.
iii. Yudh Abhyas conclusion: The two armies at the end of the exercise will undertake a joint exercise under a UN(United Nations) mandate where expert academic and military discussions will be held.

28th Indo-Thai CORPAT being conducted at Bangkok, Thailand
The 28th edition of India-Thailand Coordinated Patrol(Indo-Thai CORPAT) between India’s Indian Navy(IN) and Thailand’s Royal Thai Navy (RTN) for the year 2019 is being conducted in Bangkok, Thailand from September 05-15, 2019. Indian Naval Ship(INS) Kesari and His Majesty’s Thailand Ship(HTMS) Kraburi are participating in the CORPAT along with both navies’s Maritime Patrol Aircrafts (MPA).Key points
i. The Indian navy’s ship and aircraft participates in the biennial corpat ever since 2003 with RTN.
ii. Objectives:Ensuring effective implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Sea (UNCLOS) that regulates protection and conservation of natural resources including prevention of unregulated activities.
iii. The 19 seaters Dornier aircraft of the IN arrived Bangkok on September 5, 2019 for the Single planning conference in CORPAT.

MSME ministry launched updated Credit linked Capital Subsidy Scheme (CLCSS)
In the 2-day event (September 5& 6, 2019) of national workshop on ‘Credit Linked Capital Subsidy and Delayed Payment of MSMEs’ held at New Delhi, the Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Shri Nitin Gadkari has launched the updated Credit linked Capital Subsidy Scheme (CLCSS) to enable micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) access to capital.
i. Gadkari stated that the government will take a decision on the recommendations of the U.K. Sinha committee which had been set up by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on the strength of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector. On September 5, 2019 the Vatican city(smallest country in the world) conferred 2006 Noble laureate of Bangladesh, Prof MuhammadYunus with 2019 ‘Lamp of Peace of Saint Francis ‘ award at the historical Papal Basilica of Assisi,Italy.Key points
i. The lamp of peace award which recognizes distinguished work by an individual in promoting peace was first awarded to Polish trade union leader Lech Walesa in 1981. Politicians Mikhail Gorbachev(Russia), Angela Merkel(Germany) and spiritual leader Dalai Lama, were the few other prominent persons to receive this award.
“Oscars of science” awarded to Event Horizon Telescope Team who collaborated to produce the world’s first image of a black hole
On September 5, 2019, An Event Horizon Telescope Team consisting of 347 scientists who produced the world’s first image of a black hole were felicitated with Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. It is known as the “Oscars of science” which was launched by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and it is the eighth year of award. They won $3 million.
Key Points:
i. The team had published the image of black hole circled by a flame-orange halo of white hot plasma on the Messier 87 (M87) galaxy on April 10, 2019.
ii. It was directed by Shep Doelman at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States.
iii. Other winners from the categories like life sciences, and mathematics, also received $3 million.
iv. Winners will be recognized at a gala awards ceremony which is scheduled to be held at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California on November 3, 2019.

World Wrestling Championships 2019 to be held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan from September 14- 22, 2019
The World Wrestling Championships 2019 are scheduled to be held from September 14-22, 2019 at Barys Arena in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan. It will begin with the Greco-Roman wrestling competition. Wrestlers from 101 nations will be fighting for medals across Greco-Roman, freestyle and women’s wrestling categories. Former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe passed away
On September 6, 2019, Former President (2nd) and first prime minister of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe passed away at the age of 95 in Singapore due to old age related ailments

i. Born in Rhodesia, Zimbabwe in 1924, Mugabe served as the president for 37 year since 1987 until he was ousted from power in a military coup(forcible transition of power). He was a former guerrilla chief and took over as president after the end of white minority rule.
Aalayam Sriram, producer of ‘Bombay’ movie passed away
On September 4, 2019 Chennai (Tamilnadu) born film producer S Sriram, also known as ‘Aalayam’ Sriram, passed away in Chennai due to cardiac arrest. He headed the Alayam productions and mostly collaborated with Indian filmmaker Mani Ratnam, including the 1996
National award winning film “Bombay”. His last production was tamil film ‘Samurai’ in 2002.
KiranNagarkar- noted novelist and playwright passed away in Mumbai
On September 5, 2019 Mumbai born noted novelist and playwright KiranNagarkar passed away at the age of 77 due to old age ailments at a hospital in Mumbai. He is known for authoring the books, ‘Cuckold,'(1997) which won him the 2001 SahityaAkademi award and ‘Bedtime Stories’. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2012.

About Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (Overseas Indian Award): It is the highest honour constituted by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Government of India in conjunction with the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (Non-Resident Indian Day), to honour exceptional and meritorious contribution in their chosen profession.
It was first launched in the year 2003. January 9 was chosen every year as the day to observe Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) since it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest Pravasi, returned to India from South Africa, led India’s freedom struggle and changed the lives of Indians.

Veteran congress leader sukhdev singh libra from Punjab passed away
Sukhdev Singh, Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former MP (Member of Parliament) has passed away after a prolonged illness. He was 87.Key points:
i. Libra, who was born on 7 November 1932 at Ludhiana district of Punjab, was a member of the 14th and 15th Lok Sabhas.
ii. In 1985, Libra became MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly ) from Khanna in Ludhiana. He was also a Rajya Sabha member from 1998 to 2004.
iii. He contested from Fatehgarh Sahib and Ropar parliamentary constituencies.
iv. In 2009, the Congress gave him a ticket but later, he rejoined the Shiromani Akali Dal.
v. He has been close to SGPC’s (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) late former president Gurcharan Singh Tohra. He has also been a member of SGPC.
