PM Narendra Modi Inaugurated 5th SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi 
Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi inaugurated the 5th edition of SEMICON India 2026, a national convention on the country’s semiconductor and electronics ecosystem,  held from September 17 to September 19, 2026 at Yashobhoomi India International Convention & Expo Centre (IICC) in New Delhi, (Delhi).

• The 3-day long event which was held under the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem”,  focused on industry engagement, policy direction and international partnerships.

About SEMICON India 2026:
Organised by: The conference was organised by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in partnership with global industry body Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI).
Release of Report: During the SEMICON 2026, Ernst & Young (EY) in partnership with India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) released a report titled ‘Semicon India 2.0: From capacity creation to ecosystem leadership’. The report projected that India’s semiconductor market will grow more than threefold from nearly USD 64 billion (in 2026) to USD 200 billion) by 2035.
Key Outcomes:  The conference concluded successfully with the exchange of 56 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), announcements and strategic initiatives.

• Key Areas: These MoUs, announcements cover areas like: semiconductor design, fabrication, advanced packaging, equipment and materials, power electronics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), High-Performance Computing (HPC), Research and Development (R&D), logistics, technology commercialisation, skilling and workforce development.
• Key Announcements: the Government of India (GoI) has secured investment commitments of around Rs 1 lakh crore (approximately USD11-12 billion) under Semicon 2.0,  the second phase of its India Semiconductor Mission (ISM); and  “Odisha Silicon Valley” will be established at Naraj in Cuttack (Odisha).

PMKKKY Completes 11 Years, Surpasses 4.70 Lakh Projects Worth Over Rs 1 Lakh Crore
On 17 September 2026, the Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana (PMKKKY) launched by the Ministry of Mines (MoM) to ensure that mining-affected communities receive benefits, completed 11 years since its launch.

• More than 4.70 lakh projects worth over Rs 1 lakh crore (Cr) have been sanctioned under the scheme so far.

Details of the Scheme 
Launched on: The PMKKKY was launched on 17 September 2015.
Objective: The scheme aims to improve the quality of life in mining-affected areas by: Developing social infrastructure, Reducing the adverse impacts of mining on the environment, Health and livelihoods, and Promoting sustainable income opportunities for affected communities.
Implementation: The scheme is implemented through District Mineral Foundations (DMFs), which utilise funds collected from mining lease holders.
DMF: These are non-profit trusts established under the 2015 amendment to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 to work for the welfare of people and areas affected by mining operations.

MYAS Launches 100 Weeks Nasha Mukt Yuva Abhiyan with Nationwide Rashtriya Sankalp Samaroh 
In September 2026, the Department of Youth Affairs (DoYA) under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS), through Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat) and National Service Scheme (NSS), launched the 100 Weeks Nasha Mukt Yuva Abhiyan(NMBA) via the nationwide Rashtriya Sankalp Samaroh starting September 18, 2026.

• The campaign, featuring a Youth Pledge and Signature Drive, mobilised over 4 lakh participants across more than 1,000 locations nationwide.

About 100 Weeks Nasha Mukt Yuva Abhiyan: 
Launch: The campaign was launched on August 2, 2026 by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi via virtual address to spiritual organisations, industry associations, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and university bodies, marking a structured nationwide anti-drug initiative.
Framework: The initiative is structured around four pillars: Prevent, Protect, Recover and Lead, focusing on awareness, prevention, rehabilitation and youth leadership.
Objective: It aims to create awareness on drug abuse, drive behavioural change and build a youth-led collective movement towards a NMBA.
Timeline: The 100-week campaign commenced on September 18, 2026 with Rashtriya Sankalp Samaroh, followed by a structured 12-week activity calendar (September–December 2026) and continued weekly engagements.

18th India–Mongolia Joint Military Exercise’ NOMADIC ELEPHANT’ Begins in Uttarakhand
On 21 September 2026, the 18th edition of the annual India–Mongolia Joint Military Exercise ‘NOMADIC ELEPHANT 2026’ commenced at the Foreign Training Node(FTN), Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, and will continue until 3 October 2026.
About Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT 2026:
Participation: Exercise Nomadic Elephant 2026 involves 45 personnel each from the Indian Army (IA), predominantly from a battalion of the ARUNACHAL SCOUTS and the Mongolian Armed Forces.
Joint Training Focus: The exercise will focus on tactical-level operations, exchange of best practices, refinement of operational drills and enhanced interoperability between the Indian and Mongolian armies.
Training Activities: The curriculum will include Cordon and Search Operations, Room Intervention Drills, Special Heliborne Operations, Cyber Security Training, and the use of drones and counter-drone systems.

MoD Signs Rs 586 Crore Contract with AICPL for APUs for T-72 & T-90 Tanks 
In September 2026, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a Rs 586 crore contract with Accurate Industrial Controls Private Limited (AICPL) for 3,257 Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) required for T-72 and T-90 tanks, including 1,657 for T-90 and 1,600 for T-72, of the Indian Army (IA).

• The contract was signed in New Delhi, Delhi, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

Highlights of the Contract:
 APUs:  APUs provide alternate electric power to critical systems such as the fire control, firing circuit and gun stabilisation systems when the main engine is switched off, and can operate in temperatures ranging from -50°C to +45°C.
Indigenisation:  The indigenously developed APUs will strengthen the operational readiness, reliability and sustainability of the IA’s Mechanised Formations.
Make-II: The project reflects industry-led research and development (R&D) under Make-II, through which Indian private industry develops defence prototypes without government funding.
Significance: The contract promotes Aatmanirbharta in Defence and Viksit Bharat @2047.
About AICPL: Established on 9 April 2001 and headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra, with Kiran Baburao Jadhav as its Chairman and Managing Director (CMD).

Union Minister C R Patil Launches Swachh Seva Aankalan for Rural Sanitation 
In September 2026, Union Minister C R Patil, Ministry of Jal Shakti(MoJS), launched Swachh Seva Aankalan (SSA), an annual digital self-assessment framework for monitoring rural sanitation service delivery under Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen 2.0[SBM(G) 2.0].

• The initiative was developed by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), MoJS.

About Swachh Seva Aankalan: 
Framework: It involves Gram Panchayats(GPs), Gram Sabhas(GSs), Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs), and district/state/UT authorities.
Assessment: Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus (Model) Gram Panchayats assess ODF sustainability, visual cleanliness, Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM), and the functionality and Operation & Maintenance (O&M) of sanitation assets.
Validation:  Gram Sabha validates the assessment, enabling identification of sanitation gaps and preparation of improvement plans for stronger grassroots sanitation governance.
Constitutional Link: The initiative aligns with the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, which strengthened Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and local self-governance in rural India.

Union MoS Dr. Jitendra Singh Inaugurates 51st Doppler Weather Radar at Sambalpur, Odisha
In September 2026, Union Minister of State (MoS) (Independent Charge, IC) Dr. Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), virtually inaugurated India’s 51st state-of-the-art Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) at Jamadarpali in Sambalpur, Odisha in the presence of Mohan Charan Majhi, Chief Minister (CM) of Odisha.

• With this, Odisha now has three DWRs, located at Sambalpur, Gopalpur and Paradip.

About Sambalpur DWR:
DWR: It uses the Doppler effect to track precipitation movement and wind patterns, helping detect severe weather and support rainfall forecasting, storm monitoring and short-term nowcasting
Coverage Area: The newly commissioned radar will enhance weather monitoring and observation capabilities across 13 districts in Western Odisha, along with Southern Jharkhand, Northern Chhattisgarh, parts of North Andhra Pradesh(AP), and parts of West Bengal(WB).
Capability: The system provides meteorological observations within a 250 km (kilometre) radius with 150 m (metre) resolution and updates weather data every 10 minutes.
Mission Mausam: Launched in September 2024, the MoES initiative aims to make India weather-ready and climate-smart through improved forecasting, observations and early-warning systems.

Biometric Aadhaar Authentication Made Mandatory for Subsidised LPG Refill Booking from October 1, 2026
In September 2026, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has mandated Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) for domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) consumers from October 1, 2026, to book refills at the regulated Retail Selling Price (RSP) with applicable subsidy.
About BAA for domestic LPG:
Channels: Consumers can complete BAA during LPG refill delivery through delivery personnel using the Oil Marketing Company (OMC) mobile application, at LPG distributor showrooms, or via OMC mobile applications(apps) such as IndianOil ONE (Indane), HelloBPCL (Bharatgas), and HP PAY (HP Gas).
Compliance: Consumers completing BAA can continue LPG refill booking at regulated RSP with subsidy, while those without BAA must complete authentication to avail subsidised refills at RSP
Non-BAA Consumers: Consumers unwilling or unable to complete BAA can continue receiving LPG by registering through OMC digital platforms, but will receive 5 kg (kilogram)or 10 kg cylinders at market price without subsidy, subject to local availability.
Implicit Subsidy: Domestic LPG is sold below its actual cost, resulting in an implicit subsidy, estimated at around Rs. 210 per 14.2 kg cylinder in September 2026, compared to Rs. 721 per cylinder in June 2026

Nibe and France’s Naval Group Sign MoU for Naval Shipbuilding and Defence Technologies
On 18 September 2026, India’s Nibe Limited and France’s Naval Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a framework for cooperation in naval shipbuilding, defence platforms, autonomous systems and modern naval technologies.

• The MoU was signed by Ganesh Nibe, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Nibe Group and Marie-Laure Bourgeois, Executive Vice-President, Sales & Marketing, Naval Group.

Highlights of the MoU:
Focus Areas: The partnership covers underwater drones and their integration onboard submarines, submarine systems and technologies, mine countermeasure vessels and engineering, future weapon-ready modular naval launching systems, and maintenance.
Autonomous Systems: Both companies will leverage their respective expertise to develop underwater autonomous systems and advanced naval technologies.
Significance: Strengthens India’s self-reliance in naval programmes under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative while supporting the Indian Navy (IN) and reinforcing the Special Global Strategic Partnership between India and France.
Nibe Limited: Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra, it is an Indian aerospace and defence manufacturing company specialising in precision fabrication, machining and advanced systems engineering for the Indian Armed Forces.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

UN Women & UN DESA Release ‘The Gender Snapshot 2026’; 1 in 3 Gender Equality Institutions Weakened
In September 2026, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) released the report titled “Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot 2026”, highlighting the status of gender equality under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

• The report, released on 17 September 2026, draws on more than 100 data sources to track progress for women and girls across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key Findings of Gender Snapshot 2026:
Reduction in Budget: Around one in four institutional mechanisms for gender equality experienced reductions in their operating budgets, while nearly one in 10 lost control over their budgets altogether.
Decline in Global Funding: Global funding for gender equality fell to its lowest level since 2021, with women’s rights organisations among the most affected.

• Between 2023 and 2024, bilateral aid with gender equality objectives declined by 13%, while funding for women’s rights organisations fell by 28%.
• Around 42% of UN entities reported weakening of their gender equality efforts amid funding cuts.

Uneven Political Representation: Globally, six in seven countries are led by men. Nearly nine in 10 defence ministers and more than eight in 10 finance ministers are men.

• Women Representation: Women’s representation in national parliaments increased from 22.3% in 2015 to 27.4% in 2026.
• Cost of Running for Office: Women’s representation in local government stood at 35.6%, remaining broadly stagnant since 2023.

Union Minister Manohar Lal Leads India at G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial Meeting 2026 in Houston, USA
Union Minister Manohar Lal, Ministry of Power (MoP) and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), led India’s delegation at the Group of Twenty (G20) Energy Abundance Ministerial Meeting, held in Houston, United States of America (USA), from September 14–16, 2026 under the United States of America (USA) G20 Presidency.
About G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial Meeting 2026:
Key Pillars: The meeting focused on three key pillars: Energy Security & Affordable Baseload, Permitting & Regulatory Efficiency, and Critical Minerals & Resilient Supply Chains.
Adoption: At the meeting, India joined other G20 nations in adopting four consensus outcomes on household energy access, permitting and regulatory efficiency, water reuse and secure critical-mineral supply chains, focusing on energy security, affordability and infrastructure efficiency.
Outcome: The G20 advanced cooperation on clean cooking, faster regulatory approvals, water reuse and critical minerals, with emphasis on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) access, AI-enabled permitting, water resilience and diversified supply chains.

RBI Releases Final Directions on Capital Requirement for Market Risk; Eases KYC Norms for FPIs
In September 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued final directions, ‘RBI (Commercial Banks – Minimum Capital Requirements for Market Risk) Directions, 2026’, for the minimum capital requirement for market risk under Basel III for commercial banks. The new market-risk framework will come into effect from 1 April 2027.

• The RBI also eases Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements for foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), allowing them to submit original certified copies of specified documents certified by authorised authorities outside India.The directions came into force with immediate effect from September 18, 2026.

India’s software services exports rise 8.2% to USD 221.4 Bn in 2025-26
Overview: According to the RBI’s Survey on Computer Software and Information Technology Enabled Services Exports: 2025-26, India’s software services exports increased 8.2% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) to USD 221.4 Bn in 2025-26.
Top Country: The United States of America (USA) remained the largest destination for India’s software exports, accounting for 54.1%, followed by Europe at 31.8%.  The United Kingdom (UK) accounted for 15.4% of total exports.

RBI Cancels Licences of 5 NBFCs; 8 Others Surrender Registrations Due to Exit, Merger & Compliance Changes 
In September 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled the Certificates of Registration (CoR) of five Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) and accepted surrender of licences from eight other NBFCs across India due to exits from Non-Banking Financial Institution (NBFI) business, mergers, and regulatory compliance changes.

• The cancellations, carried out between August 4 and August 31, 2026, were effected by RBI under the RBI, 1934, exercising its powers under Section 45-IA(6) to cancel CoR of NBFCs that surrendered licences or failed to meet compliance requirements.

About RBI Action on NBFCs:
Cancelled NBFCs: Dar’s Financial Services, Rolta Holding and Finance Corporation, Vasudeo Securities, Parsoli Corporation, and A C Choksi Financial Services.
Exit from NBFI Business: Anupam Mercantile Limited, Grand Motor and Finance Private Limited, Sky Limit International Finance Limited, and ASA International India Microfinance Limited surrendered their registrations after exiting the NBFI business.
Merger: Two companies, Shivam Securities Private Limited and April Investment and Finance Private Limited, surrendered licences after ceasing to exist due to amalgamation, merger, dissolution, or voluntary strike-off.
Reclassification: Anagram Industries Limited surrendered registration after qualifying as an unregistered Core Investment Company (CIC), while CDN Finance Private Limited met criteria for an unregistered Type I NBFC.

RNFI Money Gets RBI Approval for Cross-Border Trade Remittances 
In September 2026, RNFI Money Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of RNFI Services Limited, received approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to undertake cross-border trade remittances.
Highlights of the Approval:
Services: The approval enables RNFI Money to offer regulated foreign exchange, remittance and trade-payment services through RNFI’s existing last-mile network across India.
Licence: The expanded licence has perpetual validity, providing long-term certainty for RNFI Money’s cross-border payments business.
Payment Aggregator: The approval builds on RNFI Services Limited’s recent in-principle RBI authorisation to operate as a Payment Aggregator–Physical (PA-P).
Significance: The approval expands RNFI Money’s regulated payments and foreign exchange business beyond conventional banking and forex touchpoints.

Luke J. Lindberg Appointed as WFP Executive Director for Five-Year Term 
In September 2026, Luke J. Lindberg, a United States of America (USA) national and Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), was appointed as the next Executive Director (ED) of the World Food Programme (WFP). The WFP Executive Director is appointed for a five-year term of office.

• He was jointly appointed by United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Director-General Qu Dongyu, following consultation with the WFP Executive Board.
• Lindberg succeeds Cindy McCain, who served as WFP ED from April 2023 to May 2026 and stepped down.

About the Appointment:
Interim Leadership: Carl Skau, WFP’s Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer (COO), assumed charge as Acting Executive Director on 1 June 2026, following Cindy McCain’s departure. He will continue in the role until Lindberg formally assumes office.
About Luke Lindberg:
Profile:  Luke J. Lindberg has been serving as Under Secretary of Agriculture for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) since 2025.
South Dakota Trade: Before joining USDA in 2025, he founded and led South Dakota Trade, a public-private partnership focused on expanding international markets for exporters from South Dakota. He served as its President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from November 2022 to August 2025.

Jayanti Prasad Takes Additional Charge as IBBI Chairperson
In September 2026, Jayanti Prasad, Whole-Time Member(WTM) of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI), took additional charge as Chairperson Chairperson of IBBI with effect from 13 September 2026.

• He succeeded Ravi Mital and will hold the additional charge until 20 November 2026.

Profile: Jayanti Prasad is a 1986-batch Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS) officer with 39 years of national and international civil-service experience and joined IBBI as a Whole-Time Member on 5 July 2022.
CAG & Ministry of Finance: Held senior positions at the CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General of India) Office, including Deputy CAG, and served as Custodian under the Special Court (TORTS) Act, 1992 in the Ministry of Finance.
United Nations: Served for 6 years as Chief Auditor in UN programmes across Somalia, Kenya, Geneva, Angola, Iraq and New York, and received a UN award for exemplary work in the Oil for Food Programme.

CCI Approves Acquisition of Three Cricket Franchises by Westview Cricket and Poonawalla Sports 
In September 2026, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved the acquisition of three cricket franchises Rajasthan Royals (RR) (India), Paarl Royals (South Africa), and Barbados Royals (Barbados) by Westview Cricket Limited and Poonawalla Sports and Fitness Private Limited, across multiple Twenty20 (T20) leagues.
About Cricket Franchise Acquisition:
Acquirers: Westview Cricket Limited, a United Kingdom (UK)-registered entity linked to the Mittal family, and Poonawalla Sports and Fitness Private Limited, owned by Adar Cyrus Poonawalla, are the acquiring entities.
Structure: EM Sporting Holdings Limited (EMSH) is the Mauritius-based parent entity of Royal Multisport Private Limited (RMPL), Paarl Royals Ltd. and Barbados Royals Ltd., with RMPL owning the Rajasthan Royals franchise participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Stakes: The Mittal family will hold about 75% through Westview Cricket, Adar Cyrus Poonawalla around 18% and existing investors including Manoj Badale about 7%, in a transaction valued at approximately USD 1.65 billion (Rs 15,600 crore), marking one of the largest ownership shifts in global T20 cricket.

OBITUARY

Padma Shri Awardee and Cardiologist G. Vijayaraghavan Passed Away at 84 
On 20 September 2026, renowned cardiologist and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Govindan (G.) Vijayaraghavan passed away at the age of 84 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He was born on 18 September 1942 at Perumpuzha, Kollam, Kerala

• He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009 in the field of Medicine for his contributions to medical sciences.

About G. Vijayaraghavan:
Innovation: Dr. G. Vijayaraghavan established India’s first 2D echocardiography laboratory at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram in the late 1970s, advancing non-invasive cardiac diagnosis.
Institution: He played a key role in establishing KIMS (Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences) Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, in 2002, serving as its founding director and vice-chairperson while leading its Cardiology department for over two decades.
Education: As Dean of KIMS’s academic division, he promoted medical education and research and helped introduce more than 20 Diplomate of National Board (DNB) courses.
Research: He conducted pioneering research on tropical endomyocardial fibrosis, a heart condition prevalent in southern India, and contributed to cardiac research and medical literature.

World Cleanup Day 2026– September 20
The United Nations (UN) observes World Cleanup Day annually on 20 September to raise awareness about clean-up efforts and their contribution to sustainable development.

• 2026 Theme: “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities”

Background:
Adoption: On 8 December 2024, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/78/122, proclaiming 20 September of every year as World Cleanup Day.

• The resolution called on the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to support and facilitate the global observance of World Cleanup Day.

First Observance: World Cleanup Day was first observed on 18 September 2024.
2026 Event:  The global observance of World Cleanup Day 2026 was held on 20 September in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, China.

National Pharmacovigilance Week 2026- September 17-23 
The National Pharmacovigilance Week (NPW) is observed annually across India from 17 to 23 September to promote the safe and rational use of medicines and encourage reporting of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs).

• 2026 marks the 6th observance of NPW.
• 2026 Theme:“Promoting Rational Use of Medicines through Pharmacovigilance – A Step Towards Safer Healthcare”. 

About National Pharmacovigilance Week (NPW) 2026:
Organiser: The week was organised by the National Coordination Centre–Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (NCC-PvPI) at the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
Inaugural Ceremony: The event was attended by Dr Rajiv Bahl, Director General (DG), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) virtually; Dr V. Kalaiselvan, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, IPC; Dr Jai Prakash, Officer-in-Charge, Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI); Prof. Sangeeta Sharma, Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS); and Aditya Kumar Mamgain, Deputy Secretary, MoHFW, along with other dignitaries and stakeholders.
Key Launches: On 21 September 2026, Union Minister of State (MoS) Anupriya Patel, MoHFW, launched the 7th Edition of the National Formulary of India (NFI 2026) at the 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week programme held at Dr Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi, Delhi.

• She also announced the Biovigilance Programme of India and released the Guidance Document for Hospitals in India for Safety Monitoring and Reporting of Medical Device-Related Adverse Events to strengthen materiovigilance in hospitals and also launched the ADR-PvPI 2.0 Mobile Application (App) for Apple’s iPhone Operating System (iOS) users.
