MoA&FW signs MoU with Central Silk Board for Promotion of Agroforestry in Silk Sectori.On March 7, 2021, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW) and Central Silk Board under the Ministry of Textiles. As a part of MoU there will be implementation of Agroforestry in the silk sector under the ongoing Sub-Mission on Agroforestry (SMAF) Scheme.
ii.This will be on the lines of Make in India and Make for the World vision of the Prime Minister.

India’s first forest healing centre inaugurated in Ranikhet, Uttarakhandi.On March 9, 2021, India’s first Forest Healing centre was inaugurated by noted environmentalist Joginder Bisht in the pine dominated forest located at Ranikhet in Kalika Uttarakhand. It was developed by the Research Wing of Uttarakhand Forest Department in an area of around 13 acres.
ii.The centre is based on the concept of healing and revitalizing the overall health and well being of people by bringing them into direct contact with nature.
iii.The forest is inspired from the Japanese technique of forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) and ancient Indian traditions. It is themed on ‘be silent, go slow, think less and feel more’.

The merger of Lok Sabha TV and Rajya Sabha TV has been finalised and it is replaced by the single banner, Sansad TV. This is an attempt to cover beyond the proceedings of the two houses and feature the functions of parliament and Parliamentarians when the houses are not in session. The merger is effective from 1st March 2021.
Ravi Capoor Retired IAS officer of 1986 batch has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sansad TV.
- The merger was the result of the decision of the Rajya Sabha Chairman, Venkaiah Naidu and Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla
- A committee headed by former Prasar Bharati Chairman Surya Prakash was formed to work out integration of the two channels.
BRO builds 200ft ‘The Bridge of Compassion’ across Rishiganga river in Uttarakhand
The Border Road Organisation (BRO) has built a 200 feet bridge across Rishiganga river, connecting 13 villages in Uttarakhand. The bridge was built by BRO in a record 26 days, as a replacement to the 90-metre Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) bridge that was washed away in the February 7 flash floods in Rishiganga river. The flash flood had also washed away the Rishganga Hydroelectric Project, leading to 200 workers getting trapped. As a tribute to the sacrifice of the Power plant workers, the bridge was named as “The Bridge of Compassion”.

India Topped in Frontier Tech among Developing Countries – UNCTAD’s ‘Technology and Innovation Report 2021’i.In accordance with the new country-readiness index released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in its ‘Technology and Innovation Report 2021’, India is the biggest over performer in frontier technologies than it’s per capita gross domestic products (GDP) among 158 countries.
ii.The index ranked India at 43 while the estimated one based on per capita income was 108. This meant that India over performed other countries by 65 ranking positions.
iii.India was followed by the Philippines, which over performed by 57 ranking positions.

India ranks 71 in UNCTAD B2C E-commerce Index 2020, Switzerland topsi.In accordance with the ‘UNCTAD B2C E-COMMERCE INDEX 2020- Spotlight on Latin America and the Caribbean’, India ranked 71 out of 152 countries as compared to 75th position in 2019.
ii.The index measures an economy’s preparedness to support online shopping where B2C stands for Business to Consumer. UNCTAD is an acronym for United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.
iii.The index has been topped by Switzerland for the first time which has surpassed The Netherlands. Notably 97% of the Swiss population used the internet in 2019.
iv.The online shopping was estimated at $4.4 trillion globally in 2018, up 7% from 2017.
v.In 2019, an estimated 1.5 billion people, or 27% of the world’s population aged 15 years and older, shopped online. This again represented a 7% increase over 2018.

COVID-19 may result in an additional 10 Million Child Marriages by 2030According to the ‘COVID-19: A threat to progress against Child Marriage’ report compiled by UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) COVID-19 impact could result in additional 10 Million Child Marriages in the next decade (2020-30).
- The study stated that in the past decade (2010-20), the proportion of young women married as children had declined by 15% globally (from one in four to one in five).
- The report was released ahead of the International Women’s Day on March 8, 2021.
Factors causing Child Marriage
The study states that school closures, economic stress, pregnancy & parental deaths due to pandemic are putting vulnerable girls at increased risk of child marriage.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals has set a target to end Child Marriage by 2030.
- The goals include 10 Million girls who are at present affected by it and also the 100 million girls at risk of becoming child brides before the start of the pandemic.

Jaishankar inaugurates New Cultural Centre of High Commission of India in Dhaka, BangladeshOn 4th March 2021, Dr. S Jaishankar, Union Minister, Ministry of External Affairs inaugurated the new cultural centre of the High Commission of India in old India House Building, Dhaka, Bangladesh. This is the 2nd culture centre for the high commission of India after the Dhanmondi centre at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Dhaka.
- He inaugurated the Cultural Centre in Dhaka during his visit to Bangladesh on 4th March 2021 at the invitation of his counterpart Dr. AK Abdul Momen.
Key points:
i.The new centre has the facilities for conducting short term courses on Indian Art forms and to hold cultural programmes and art exhibitions.
ii.This centre will act as a centre of the unique relationship between India and Bangladesh.
iii.With this 2nd cultural centre, Dhaka became one of the few cities in the world that has more than 1 Indian Cultural Centre.

i.He visited Bangladesh to finalise the upcoming visit of Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh (26-27 March) to take part in the centenary celebration of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib and 50 years of the liberation of Bangladesh.
ii.During his visit he met Bangladesh PM M Sheikh Hasina, and presented two books on Bangladesh titled “Liberation War of Bangladesh” and “Bangla Desh and India’s Security” and written by his late father K.Subrahmanyam.

On 3rd March 2021, Axis Bank launched the banking services on WhatsApp, this will enable the customers to get information on their balance, transactions, credit card payments, and deposit details. India attracted total FDI inflow of US$ 67.54 billion during April to December 2020Due to the reforms made by Government of India (GoI) in the last six and a half years to facilitate Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and in ease of doing business, India saw an increase in FDI inflows in 2020 despite of COVID-19 impact. India is becoming a preferred investment destination amongst global investors.
Following the key numbers related to FDI in India as per Ministry of Commerce & Industry:
i.There was a total FDI inflow of US$ 67.54 billion during April to December 2020. It is the highest ever for the first ninth months of a financial year and 22% higher as compared to the first ninth months of FY20 (US$ 55.14 billion).
ii.FDI equity inflow grew by 40% in the first 9 months of FY21 (US$ 51.47 billion) compared to US$ 36.77 billion in FY20.
iii.FDI inflow increased by 37% in Q3FY21 to US$ 26.16 billion as compared to US$ 19.09 billion of Q3FY21.
iv.FDI inflow showed positive growth of 24% to US$ 9.22 billion in December, 2020 as compared to US$ 7.46 billion of December, 2019.
Google.org to support 1 Million Women Entrepreneurs in rural IndiaSundar Pichai, CEO of Google stated that Google.org the Philanthropic arm of Google will support 1 Million women entrepreneurs in rural India by providing them with business tutorials, mentorship & accelerator programmes through Google’s newly launched ‘Women Will’ web platform.
- A grant of USD 500, 000 will be provided to NASSCOM (National Association of Software & Service Companies) Foundation for supporting 1 Lakh women agri workers with digital and financial literacy.
- Google also launched a global org Impact Challenge for Women & Girls for providing USD 25 Million to nonprofits & social enterprises working towards empowerment of women & girls.

SpaceX successfully Tests ‘Starship SN10’ Prototype Rocket
SpaceX successfully tested its ‘Starship SN10’ prototype rocket after two failed attempts. The rocket successfully up to an altitude of 10, 000 Kms & safely landed back on the ground, but exploded six minutes after the landing. The test launch was considered successful as the Starship prototype successfully landed after attempting the belly-flop maneuver (a type of free fall in which the atmosphere gradually slows down its speed). Starship is being developed by SpaceX to get people & payloads to moon, Mars & other distant destinations.

Veteran Indian athlete, Ishar Singh Deol passed away at 91On March 06, 2021, The Dhyan Chand National Awardee, Ishar Singh Deol a veteran Indian athlete died at the age of 91 in Chandigarh. He majorly participated in Shot-put and Discus throw from 1951-1960.
About Ishar Singh Deol:
- He was born on September 7,1929 in Ranguwal, Ludhiana, Punjab.
- For 30 consecutive years he worked as General Secretary of the Punjab Athletes Association and for many years he has acted as the Vice President and Selection committee member of the Athletic Federation of India.
Award:
In 2009, he was awarded the Dhyan Chand National Award for his lifelong contribution towards sports from Pratibha Patil, President of that time.
Achievements:
- Since 1951, he has won many medals for the country and the state.
- He had participated in the first three Asian Games and in 1954 he won a bronze medal in the second Asian Games which was held in Manila, Philippines.
- He has set a new Asian record of 46 feet 11.2 inches in Shot-put at the International Athletic Meet-1957.
- In 1982, at the first Asian Veteran Athletic Meet he won gold which was held in Singapore.

Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan’s Autobiography “The Frontier Gandhi: My Life And Struggle” to be Published in EnglishThe autobiography of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, popularly known as the “Frontier Gandhi” & fondly known as Bacha Khan or Badshah Khan, titled “The Frontier Gandhi: My Life and Struggle” is set to be published in English by the publishing house Roli Books. This will be his first autobiography in English. The book was translated into English by Imitiaz Ahmad Sahibzada, former Pakistani civil servant and author.
- The foreword of the book is written by historian Rajmohan Gandhi, Grandson of Gandhi and
- The book was originally written in Pashto and published in 1983.

Odisha Govt. to set up ‘Mission Shakti’ Department to strengthen SHGsOn March 06,2021, Ahead of International Women’s Day, the Odisha government in its cabinet meeting which is chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has approved to set up a new department called “Department of Mission Shakti” to strengthen both the rural and urban Self Help Groups (SHGs) in the state.
Objectives of the Department:
- Now both the Directorate of Mission Shakti and Odisha Livelihood Mission (OLM) will come under the Department of Mission Shakti.
- The department will provide an effective interactive platform to establish linkages with all level SHGs, which will be helpful for the government to monitor and provide better services to them with the improved linear administrative mechanism.
Other Major Decisions:
- To construct satellite center of AIIMS, at Remuna Tahasil of Balasore district the government sanctioned the lease of 25 acres for free of cost.

Denmark to set up Center of Excellence for dairy sector in RajasthanOn March 06,2021, Denmark Ambassador Freddy Svane had a meeting with Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot and Governor Kalraj Mishra to set up a Center of Excellence for the dairy sector in Rajasthan.
Objectives of the Center of Excellence:
i.To provide technical support in water conservation and purification works in the urban areas of Udaipur
ii.To give better facilities to cattle rearers and
iii.To be fully cooperative in the field of dairy science and technology through Denmark’s expertise.
- Rajasthan is the second highest milk producing state in India contributing around 11% to the total milk production.
