NSO released Annual Report of Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), 2018 – 2019 NSO released Annual Report of Periodic Labour Force Survey

i.India’s unemployment rate fell between July 2018 and June 2019 to 5.8% from 6.1% during the same period of 2017-18 while the Indian economy grew 6.1% in 2018-19, slower than the 7% expansion recorded the year before.
ii.For 2018-19 the survey has covered 1,01,579 households (55,812 in rural areas and 45,767 in urban areas) and 4,20,757 people (rural – 2,39,817, urban – 1,80,940).
iii.This is the second Annual Report being brought out by NSO on the basis of PLFS.

India, Australia bilateral virtual summit held; 7 agreements inked along with announcement of CSPIndia, Australia Leaders summit

i.This was PM Narendra Modi’s first virtual bilateral summit, while Australia has held such a summit with Singapore in March 2020.
ii.India-Australia virtual leader’s summit was on the lines of Australian PM Scott Morrison’s visit to India which was in the pipeline (first during January 13-16 and later in May). Therefore, it was decided to have a virtual meeting.
iii.India, Australia signed following seven agreements during the meet:

  • Framework Arrangement on Cyber and Cyber-Enabled Critical Technology Cooperation
  • MOU on cooperation in the field of mining and processing of Critical and Strategic minerals
  • MoU Arrangement concerning Mutual Logistics Support (MLSA)
  • MoU on Defence Cooperation; Australia to support India’s membership for NSG
  • MoU on Co-operation in the field of Public Administration and Governance Reforms
  • MoU on Cooperation in Vocational Education and Training
  • MoU on Water Resources Management

‘Virtual Global Vaccine Summit 2020’ addressed by the Prime Minister Modi virtual Global Vaccine Summit

i.The virtual Global Vaccine Summit hosted by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson from London was attended by more than 50 countries and their global leaders.
ii.The PM of India, Narendra Modi addressed the session on aspects of India’s contribution and its long-standing view on global cooperation for immunization.
iii.India has pledged to support 15 million USD to GAVI during the Virtual Summit.

IISC Bangalore ranked 36, 8 Indian Institutes entered top 100 in THE Asia University RankingTHE Asia University Ranking 2020

In the Times Higher Education(THE) Asia University Ranking launched on 4th June 2020, Indian became the Third most represented country with 8 institutes in the top 100.Indian Institute of Science(IISc) with 36th position on the list retains its top position in India.
Key Points:
i.Six Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are featured in the top 100 of list along with Institute of Chemical Technology(ICT)
ii.In India around 489 universities were qualified for this year’s ranking with 72 additional institutes as compared to 2019.
iii.The most represented country was Japan with 110 institutes followed by China and India with 81 universities and 72 institutes respectively.
iv.Tsinghua University, China Tops the List following Peking University, China in 2nd position and National University of Singapore, Singapore in 3rd position.
v.The ranking is made based on the citations, industry income, international outlook, research and teaching.

i.The 51st annual World Economic Forum (WEF) Davos dual summit meeting to be held in January 2021.WEF annual meeting will be held every year at Davos,Switzerland.50th annual WEF meeting was held from January 21-24, 2020.
ii.This summit would be virtually open for everyone across the world with more than 400 global hubs. Prince Charles of Wales and WEF Founder and Executive Klaus Schwab announced the meet during a virtual session.

RBI creates Payments Infrastructure Development Fund with initial corpus of Rs 250 cr to boost digitizationRBI creates Payments Infrastructure Development Fund

In order to encourage the deployment of Points of Sale (PoS) infrastructure in smaller cities and towns, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has initiated with Rs 500-crore ($66 million) Payments Infrastructure Development Fund (PIDF) with an initial contribution of Rs 250 crore . The remaining amount will be contributed by card issuing banks and card networks working in the country.

Indian economy likely to contract by 1.5% in FY21: RBI sponsored SPF surveyEconomy may contract by 1

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the results of 3 survey’s namely -Consumer Confidence Survey (CCS) – May 2020; Survey of Professional Forecasters (SPF) on Macroeconomic Indicators  (64th round) and Inflation Expectations Survey of Households (IESH) – May 2020.
i.According to CCS survey, the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) was at 115.2 in March 2020 but in May 2020 it came down to 97.9.
ii.As per SPF survey, India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth may contract by 1.5 % for the current fiscal year (FY21).

ii.Brajendra Navnit, the Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office(July 2014 -September 2019) as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India(PRI) to the World Trade Organisation(WTO) & will be posted at the Permanent Mission of India(PMI) to the WTO, under the Department of Commerce. He replaced JS Deepak at the PMI whose two-year extended term ended on May 31.

On June 04, 2020, Competition Commission of India (CCI) has given its nod to the proposed merger between French car maker Peugeot S.A (PSA) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V (FCA),an Italian-American multinational corporation and is the world’s eighth largest auto maker.
i.The merged entity will be the 4th largest original equipment manufacturer by volume and the third largest by revenue after Toyota, Volkswagen, and Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi.

India to host AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022India to host AFC Women's Asian Cup

On June 5, 2020, Asian Football Confederation(AFC) granted the hosting rights of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 to India for the 1st time since 1979. The tournament is likely to be held in the 2nd half of the year. The event will serve as the final qualification tournament for the 2023 Federation Internationale de Football Association(FIFA) Women’s World Cup.

  • The tournament was hosted by India in 1980 in Kozhikode this was the first time the competition was held in South Asia.
  • The tournament will feature 12 teams from an earlier slot of 8 teams.

Key Points
i.India hosting the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2021 will boost the All India Football Federation(AIFF).
ii.India has also hosted the AFC U-16 Championships in 2016 and the Fifa U-17 World Cup in 2017.

Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary K. Shanmugam gets 3 month extensionTN State Chief Secretary K Shanmugam

On June 3, 2020 Centre approves the 3-month extension(August 1- October 31)  of Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary K. Shanmugam, a 1985-batch Indian Administrative Service(IAS) officer who assumed charge on June 30, 2019, after the retirement of incumbent Girija Vaidyanathan. K. Shanmugam was to retire from service on July 31, 2020.

  • Prior to becoming Chief Secretary he was state’s finance secretary. He hails from Salem.

Key Points
i.The letter dated on May 15 to seek Central government nod to extend the tenure of him was sent by the Tamil Nadu government to the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. 
ii.The selection process of the next Chief Secretary is likely to begin soon.
Note– At present, there are 25 senior IAS officers in the cadre of Additional Chief Secretary in the Tamil Nadu & those who are on deputation to the Centre.

Severe cyclonic storm “Nisarga”: India’s west coast

Cyclone Nisarga, which intensified into a severe cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea, expected to hit the coasts of Gujarat, Maharashtra.Over coastal Maharashtra  weakened into a Cyclonic Storm, dropped heavy rains and winds gusting up to 120km (75 miles) per hour as a category 4 cyclone near the coastal city of Alibag(Maharashtra).The name Nisarga was suggested by Bangladesh.
