PM Modi Launches Physical Distribution of Property Cards Under the SVAMITVA SchemePM launches physical distribution of Property Cards under the SVAMITVA Scheme

i.On 11th October 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a physical distribution of property cards, a legal document of owning their houses under the Survey of Villages and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas(SVAMITVA) scheme over a virtual platform. This will support to make rural India self-sufficient.
ii.This scheme aims to help the villagers to utilize the properties as a financial asset to get loans and other financial benefits.
iii.The property cards, the legal papers of the houses have been handed over to the more than 1 lakh beneficiaries from 763 villages across Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

i.On October 12, 2020 Rajnath Singh, Union Defence Minister virtually inaugurated 44 bridges, built by Border Roads Organisation (BRO) across 7 States/UTs(Union Territories) in border areas. Most of these bridges are in strategically important areas and will help armed forces to ensure quick movement of troops and weapons. 
ii.He also laid the Foundation Stone for 450 meters long, ‘Nechiphu Tunnel’, a bi-lane tunnel, on the road to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.

Kerala becomes First State in India to go Digital in Public EducationKerala has become the first State to have high-tech classrooms in all its public schools

The state of Kerala has become the First State in India to make the public education sector completely digital.
It has been implemented at a cost of INR 42.36 Crores, out of which KIIFB has contributed INR 34.75 crores.

The project was implemented by Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE). Financial assistance was provided by Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).

C-DAC & NSM Host Institutes signed a MoU to Establish Supercomputing Infrastructure in Premier Institutions Across IndiaC-DAC and National Supercomputing Mission Host Institutes signs MOU

i.On 12th October 2020, The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) With the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) Host Institutes supercomputing infrastructure with assembly and manufacturing in India. 
ii.Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas, Director, NIT, Trichy and Dr. Hemant Darbari, Director General, C – DAC signed the MoU.
iii.Purpose of the MoU – To establish Critical Components at Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bangalore, Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) (Kanpur, Roorkee, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Mandi, Gandhinagar), National Institute of Technology(NIT) Trichy, National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) Mohali and NSM Nodal Centres for training in High-Performance Computing & Artificial Intelligence (HPC & AI) at IIT (Madras, Kharagpur, Goa and Palakkad).

OXFAM & DFI’s CRI Index 2020:India ranked 129; Norway topped India’s health budget 4th lowest in world

i.India has been ranked 129 out of 158 countries in the Third Edition of Commitment to Reducing Inequality (CRI) Index or CRI Index 2020 released by Oxfam and  Development Finance International (DFI). According to the report, India has spent only 4 percent of its budget on health during the Pandemic, which is the Fourth Lowest in the world.

School Closure due to COVID-19 may cost Around USD 420 Billion Loss to India: World BankCOVID-19 school closure may cost over USD 400 billion to India

According to the World Bank Report titled “Beaten or Broken? Informality and COVID-19 in South Asia” the closure of schools due to COVID-19 pandemic in India will cause a loss of between USD 420 Billion & USD 600 Billion in Country’s Future Earnings, in addition to learning losses. 
The report has been jointly prepared by the joint product of Office of Chief Economist for the South Asia Region (SARCE) and Macroeconomics, Trade and Investment (MTI) Global Practice.

Exim Bank Supported USD 310 mn LoC to Republic of Zimbabwe for Repowering of Hwange Thermal Power Station Exim Bank's Government of India issued LOC of USD 310 million to the Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe

i.Export-Import (Exim) bank of India on behalf of the Government of India supported Line of Credit (LoC) of USD 310 million to the Republic of Zimbabwe to finance repowering of Hwange Thermal Power Station. 
ii.For this purpose, Exim Bank had entered into an agreement with the Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe on February 24, 2020.
iii.The agreement under the LoC is effective from September 30, 2020.

Britain’s Prince William & Sir David Attenborough Launched “The Earthshot Prize”, an Environmental Award to Support Climate ChangePrince William, David Attenborough launch ‘Earthshot’ Prize to incentivize climate repair

On 8th October 2020, Britain’s Prince William, Duke of Cambridge along with Broadcaster and Naturalist Sir David Attenborough launched the Earthshot Prize, a new environmental prize with an aim to encourage change and support to repair the planet in the next 10 years (2030).
Note:
The Earthshot Prize is described as the most prestigious global environment prize in history.
This prize was inspired by the Moonshot project launched by Former US President John F Kennedy in 1961.
About the Earthshot prize:
i.The Earthshot prize comprises 5 prizes of 1 million pounds (around Rs.9.5 crores) awarded each year for the next 10 years.
ii.The award aims to provide at least 50 solutions to the environmental issues by 2030.
iii.The 5 prizes will be given to the ideas which supports to 

  • Protect and restore nature
  • Clean the Air
  • Revive the Ocean
  • Reduce waste
  • Fixing the climate

iv.The nominations of the inaugural prize will be open from 1st November 2020 and the winners of the inaugural Earthshot prize will be announced in 2021 at London.
v.The winners will be provided the required support and opportunities to scale up their works.
vi.The prize is supported by a group of individuals and organisations and philanthropic bodies of billionaires like Bloomberg Philanthropies, Jack Ma Foundation(Alibaba), Paul G.Allen Family Foundation(Microsoft).

Eight Beaches of India have been awarded “BLUE FLAG” certification by Denmark based Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). India became the First Country to be awarded the Coveted International Blue Flag certification for 8 beaches in one attempt.

Milgrom and Robert B. Wilson for “improvements to auction theory and inventions of new auction formats”.

DRDO Launches Nirbhay Cruise Missile;Aborts Mission due to Technical Snag DRDO test 800-km range Nirbhay cruise missile

On 12th October, 2020, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) launched the Nirbhay Cruise Missile from Odisha’s test facility, the mission was aborted due to technical snag. 
i.It was the maiden trial of the Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM).
ii.The subsonic missile can fly at a speed of 0.7 Mach, and has a range of 800 to 1, 000 Kms. 
iii.Nirbhay is India’s first indigenously developed Cruise Missile

Carlton Chapman, Former Indian Football Captain passed away at 492020-10-13

On 12th October 2020, Carlton Chapman, former Indian football team captain passed away at the age of 49 in a private hospital at Bengaluru, Karnataka due to heart attack.
He was born on 13th April 1971 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
About Carlton Chapman:
i.Carlton Chapman, India’s leading midfielder played from 1995 to 2001.
ii.He was the captain of the Indian team when India won the South Asian Football Federation Gold Cup in 1997.
iii.He scored 3 goals for East Bengal against Al Zawra of Iraq in the Asian Cup Winner Cup.
Chapman played a major role in the East Bengal Squad which won the NFL 2000-2001.
iv.He announced his retirement from professional Football in 2001.
v.He joined Tata Football Academy (TFA) as an instructor in 2002.
vi.He had a stint with Royal Wahingdoh FC, Shillong as the Coach during which, Royal Wahingdoh FC won 3 successive Shillong Premier league titles and Bordoloi Trophy in 2011.
vii.He joined Quartz FC, Kozhikode as the technical director in 2017.

Veteran Film-maker B. Vijaya Reddy Passed AwayVeteran film_maker Vijaya Reddy no more

On October 9, 2020 Veteran film-maker B. Vijaya Reddy, known as Vijay in the Kannada film industry passed away due to cardiac arrest in a private hospital in Chennai, Tamil Nadu at the age of 84. He was born on 15th July 1936 in Tadepalligudem, West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. 

  • He floated a production house, Vijaya Shekhar Productions with another director V. Somashekhar and went on to produce several films.

About B. Vijaya Reddy
i.He made his debut as a director in Rangamahal Rahasya (1970), a thriller.
ii.He was known for his collaborations with leading Kannada actor Rajkumar for movies like Gandhada Gudi (1973), Mayura (1975) among others which are considered among the classic movies of Kannada cinema.
iii.He has also directed several leading men of Kannada cinema, namely  Anant Nag in Naa Ninna Bidalare, Shankar Nag in Auto Raja, etc.,
iv.Apart from Kannada he had also directed movies in other languages, namely Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.

i.On October 12, 2020 Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Chief Minister(CM) of TamilNadu signed 14 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth Rs 10,055 crore in investments, that is expected to generate employment opportunities for about 7,000 people.
ii.Of these 14 MoUs, 10 were exchanged physically and the remaining 4 were exchanged online.

INS Sahyadri & Kora were Declared as Best Ships in Fleet Award Function 2020

On 9th October 2020, Indian Navy Ship(INS) Sahyadri and INS Kora were awarded the Best Ship trophies among the Capital Ships and Corvettes & similar classes of ships respectively. The awards were presented at the Fleet Award Function (FAF) 2020 organised by the Indian Navy at Visakhapatnam to mark the successful performance of the Operational Cycle of the Eastern Fleet.

The FAF is organised every year to mark the resilience and perseverance of Indian Navy personnels appointed onboard ships of Poorvi Beda or Sword Arm of Eastern Naval Command (ENC).

Polish Footballer Robert Lewandowski named as UEFA Men’s Player of the Year for 2019/2020 

Robert Lewandowski (Poland) who represents the club Bayern Munich has been named as the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Men’s Player of the Year 2020. He finished ahead of Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) & Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich). It is an association football award given to footballers playing for men’s football clubs in Europe. It is given for performances in both club and national team competitions
