WCF, NITI Aayog Partner to provide training to Country’s Children and Youth on CybersafetyWNS partners Niti Aayog to extend education on cybersecurity

WCF (WNS Cares Foundation), the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) wing of Private firm WNS Global Services has partnered with Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL), an initiative under Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog for providing training to India’s children and youth on cybersafety. WCF will provide digital education through its platform CyberSmart.
i.ATL will use CyberSmart platform and digital programs of WCF in its network of around 6, 500 schools to educate students on cybersecurity and other relevant areas.
ii.The volunteers will support ATL to deliver the modules effectively.
CyberSmart Platform:
CyberSmart Platform is India’s 1st Holistic cybersecurity education portal. It inculcates learning through gaming, thematic quiz-based module based on curriculum advisory.

UNESCO Launched 2020 State of Education Report for India to Support GoI in Youth’s Skill DevelopmentUNESCO launches 2020 State of the Education Report for India

i.On December 8, 2020, the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), New Delhi virtually launched the 2nd edition of “State of the Education Report for India 2020: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)”.
ii.This report is an overview of the present capacity for TVET provision through short-term and long-term courses.
iii.It has been developed by an experienced team of researchers from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, Maharashtra under the guidance of UNESCO New Delhi.  It’s technical and financial partner was New York (United States) based American India Foundation (AIF).
iv.Aim of the Report: To support the Government of India (GoI) by acting as a reference tool for enhancing and influencing the policies and programs related to skills development.
v.The SDG 4 represents Quality education. As per NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog 2019 Performance of states and UT on the SDG, Himachal Pradesh is performing best in SDG 4 with a score of 81 while on complete SDG performance Chandigarh and Kerala have gained a maximum score of 70.

Indian Navy finalises procurement of Israeli ‘SMASH 2000’ Anti-Drone SystemsIndian Navy finalises procurement of anti-drone systems

Indian Navy has finalised the contract for procurement of a batch of Israeli ‘SMASH 2000 Plus fire Control SystemsAnti-Drone Systems which is capable of destroying high-speed enemy drones. It is manufactured by Israel Firm ‘Smart Shooter’. It will be used in border security, bases and strategic facilities protection.
i.The Smash Fire Control Systems Are Electro-optical rifle sights which will be mounted on Assault rifles such as AK-47/103 rifles.
ii.They are expected to be delivered by 2021.
Key Points:
i.SMASH 2000 Plus has a range of up to 120 metres.
ii.It is equipped with Targeting Algorithms to track and hit small drones which are capable of flying at high speeds.
iii.The SMASH 2000 Plus is equipped with Advanced Counter-UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) Mode to counter emerging drone threats.
India’s Weapon Procurement from US Jumps to USD 3.4 Billion in 2020:

Foreign Ministers of India, Oman hold virtual meeting; Oman announces Directive to form Friendship Association with IndiaOman announces directive to form Friendship Association with India

On December 2, 2020, External Affairs Minister (EAM), S. Jaishankar and Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi, Foreign Minister of Oman held a virtual meeting. During the meeting, EAM appreciated Oman’s directive to establish Oman-India Friendship Association. The establishment of the Friendship Association will be the First Ever in the West Asia region.
Objective of the Friendship Association:
i.The association has been established with an aim of promoting friendship & understanding between the two countries.
ii.The association will also be useful for discussion of matters of mutual interest between Oman and India Business and social communities in the Sultanate.

6th India-Japan ICT Joint Working Group meet held virtually5G, AI technologies discussed at 6th India-Japan 6th India-Japan

On December 8, 2020, The 6th Meeting of Joint Working Group under the India-Japan ICT (Information & Communications Technology) was held virtually. Cooperation in 5G technologies, medical applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) were some of the key issues discussed during the meeting. The meeting was inaugurated by Anshu Prakash, Secretary, Telecom, Ministry of Communication, India. The virtual meeting was held through VC Solution, a web platform developed by India’s C-DOT (Centre for Development of Telematics).
i.The India-Japan Joint Working Group on ICT was established in 2014 as part of the Japan-India ICT Comprehensive Cooperation Framework.
ii.India, Japan collaborative project at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in Hyderabad, the project involves the use of AI by Software to assist doctors in Colonoscopy diagnosis.
iii.Topics of Discussion – Submarine Optical Fiber Placement, Smart-City Development programme and application of AI in Healthcare, wireless planning, Standardization of technology and its utilization.

India drops to 9th spot in Global Spam Call Tally – 4th Edition of Insights Report by Truecaller

According to the 4th Edition of Global Insights Report for 2020 released by Truecaller, a Swedish Caller ID and Spam Blocking app, India ranked 9th in the list of countries affected by spam calls in 2020. In India, Gujarat received the most spam calls.  The list was topped by Brazil, United States & Hungary. The report also stated that 8 out of 10 women in India receive sexual harassment, inappropriate calls and SMS regularly.

ADB Approved US$300 mn Loan for Primary Health Care Program in Urban Areas; $2mn Additional Grant for its ImplementationADB to provide USD 300 mn loan for primary health care in urban areas

i.On December 8, 2020, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved USD 300 million (about Rs 2,200 crore) loan for Strengthening Comprehensive Primary Health Care in Urban Areas Program in India.
ii.In addition to the loan, a $2 million technical assistance grant was also provided from ADB’s Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction to provide technical support for program implementation.
iii.The program involving all levels of governance viz. Central, State, and Municipal will strengthen, upgrade, and increase the number of functional health and wellness centers in 13 states.
iv.The program will support the Ayushman Bharat (the Healthy India initiative) Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWC) and Pradhan Mantri – Atmanirbhar Swasth Bharat Yojana (PM-ASBY).

RBI Cancelled Licence of Karad Janata Sahakari Bank , MaharashtraRBI cancels licence of Karad Janata Sahakari Ban

On December 8, 2020, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled the licence of The Karad Janata Sahakari Bank Ltd., Karad, Maharashtra to carry on banking business, which includes acceptance of deposits and repayment of deposits as defined in Section 5(b) read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 with effect from the close of business on December 7, 2020.

  • The bank was under All Inclusive Directions since November 07, 2017.
  • On liquidation, every depositor is entitled to repayment of deposits up to a monetary ceiling of Rs 5,00,000 from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC), as per the DICGC Act, 1961. More than 99% of the depositors of the bank will get full payment of their deposits from DICGC.

Reason behind License Cancellation:
–The bank does not comply with the provisions of section 11(1) and section 22 (3) (d) read with section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 as it does not have adequate capital and earning prospects.
–It also failed to comply with the requirements of section 22(3) (a), 22 (3) (b), 22(3)(c), 22(3) (d) and 22(3)(e) read with section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949;
–To save the public interest as its present financial position is unable to pay its present depositors in full.

ICICI Bank Becomes Designated Bank for all financial transactions under NHM in WBICICI Bank to be designated bank for all financial transactions

ICICI (Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India) Bank won the mandate to be the designated financial institution for all monetary transactions under National Health Mission (NHM) in West Bengal (WB) as it quoted the lowest bid.

  • This is on the lines of WB government decision of implementing a single bank account system for NHM. Under this, all financial transactions will be conducted through online software, integrated with bank accounts.

Launched in 2013, the NHM encompasses its two Sub-Missions viz. HDFC Bank has invested an undisclosed amount in S​mallcase Technologies, and bought a minority stake, as part of a recent Series B fund-raise of $14 million by the Bengaluru-based fintech startup. The five-year old startup operates in the capital markets infrastructure space and works with businesses to help individuals invest in simple and transparent products called smallcases.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) has developed ‘Co-WIN’ – A Digital Platform & Mobile Application for real-time monitoring of COVID-19 vaccine delivery and recording data. The platform can be used by the people to register themselves for vaccination.
i.The app can also send real-time data of temperature of cold-storage facilities to the main server.
ii.Co-WIN will also help the Government to monitor the entire vaccination process.
iii.Co-WIN app will have 5 modules – administrator, registration, vaccination, beneficiary acknowledgement & report.

IOC adds Breakdance as Medal Events in 2024 Paris Olympic Games; 3 other events added in 2020 Tokyo Olympic GameBreakdancing gets Olympic status to debut at Paris in 2024

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board added “Breaking” – a competitive form of breakdancing & 3 other sports – Skateboarding, Sport Climbing, and Surfing to Medal Events Program in Olympic Games. Breaking will make its Olympic debut at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, while 3 other sports will make their olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics to be held in July, 2021 (delayed due to COVID-19). The additional sports were proposed by the Paris 2024 Organising Committee.
i.The sports have been included by IOC to set a new standard for inclusive, gender-balanced and youth-centred games.
ii.The IOC has approved the reduction of certain medal events in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, Paris will have 329 medal events, 10 events less than the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (to be held in 2021)

  • The occasion was marked by a wreath laying ceremony at “Veer Smriti” where Harsh Chhibber, Major General ASC, Headquarters Western Command, officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and Jawans of Army Service Corps paid homage to the martyrs for their selfless and supreme sacrifice.
  • To commemorate this occasion, a 260 kilometer Ultra Run, themed ‘Run for Martyrs’ was organised from War Memorial, Chandimandir to National War Memorial, Delhi from 04 to 08 December 2020.

ASC is the oldest and the largest administrative service of the Army responsible for provisioning, procurement and distribution of supplies and petroleum products to the Army, Air Force, Navy and other Paramilitary forces. It has been celebrating its raising day since December 8, 1950 when the word ‘Royal’ was dropped from the nomenclature of ASC.

Justice Rajesh Bindal Appointed as Chief Justice of Common High Court for the UT of J&K and UT of Ladakh; Succeeds Justice Gita MittalJustice Rajesh Bindal appointed as acting Chief Justice

On December 8, 2020 Ram Nath Kovind, President of India appointed Justice Rajesh Bindal as the Chief Justice of the Common High Court(HC) for the Union Territory(UT) of Jammu and Kashmir(J&K) and Union Territory of Ladakh. He will take charge on December 9, 2020. He succeeds Justice Gita Mittal, the 1st female Chief Justice of this court.

President of India appointed him, in exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India
About Justice Rajesh Bindal
i.Prior to his appointment as chief justice of the common HC for the UT of J&K and UT of Ladakh, he served as the senior-most Judge of this court.
ii.He was appointed as Permanent Judge of the HC of Punjab and Haryana on March 22, 2006.
iii.He was transferred to J&K  High Court on November 19, 2018.
About Justice Gita Mittal:
i.She has served as the Acting Chief Justice and Judge of Delhi High Court.
ii.She was appointed as a single judge Tribunal under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 in February, 2008
iii.This was to examine the government ban on activities of the Students of Islamic Movement in India (SIMI).
Points to be Noted
i.In 2019, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh became two separate Union territories from under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
ii.It was also mentioned that it will have a common high court.
iii.Late Leila Seth is the First Woman Chief Justice of the High Court in India.
iv.Sindhu Sharma is the 1st woman judge of Jammu & Kashmir High Court.

Mizoram CM Launches Employment Generation Project to assist Migrant Workers

Mizoram CM Launches Employment Generation ProjectOn 9 December, 2020 the Chief Minister of Mizoram Zoramthanga launched an employment generation project, “Livelihood Generation for Returned Migrant Workers project”, in the state to assist migrant workers who lost their job in the Covid-19 pandemic. The total outlay of the project is Rs 3.3 crores under Mizoram Youth Commission (MYC).
Key Highlights of the Project:

  • The project will be funded by North East Council.
  • Provide skill based training and entrepreneurship to over 2,600 workers through 7 components.
  • Implemented in all the 11 districts of Mizoram targeting 550 candidates under this component.

Project Implementation:
i.Skill training component for 150 people, implemented by Labour Employment, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship department.
ii.Entrepreneurship skill training to 100 candidates, conducted by Mizo University
iii.BPO, animation, gaming and designing training to 637 people.
iv.Home based food processing for 120 people
v.Tour guides training for 100 people
vi.e-Commerce training to limited people.
