Now y litres of water poured in. Water becomes (1/4)*x – (1/4)*y +y = (1/4)*x +(3/4)*y
Now [(3/4)*x – (3/4)*y] / [(1/4)*x + (3/4)*y] = 9/4
Take 1/4 common and cancel, so
3(x-y)/(x+3y) = 9/4
Solve, y = (1/13)* x
So 1/13 of original mixture removed.
