MoD signs contract with Mahindra Telephonics for 11 Airport Surveillance RadarsMoD signs contract to procure 11 Airport Surveillance RadarsOn 3rd June 2021, The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a Rs 323.47 crore worth contract with Mahindra Telephonics Integrated Systems Limited for procurement of 11 Airport Surveillance Radars for the use of Indian Navy & Indian Coast Guard.
i.Mahindra Telephonics signed the contract for the 11 radars under the “Buy and Make” category, to boost “Make in India” initiative.
ii.Objective – The installation of these radars will increase the air domain awareness

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Launched Digitized Versions of Health Schemes CGHS, RAN, HMDG on NHA’s IT PlatformHarsh Vardhan launches Digitized versions of Flagship Health Schemes on National Health AuthorityUnion Minister Harsh Vardhan, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare(MoHFW) launched the revamped, digitized version of Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Umbrella schemes of Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi (RAN), and Health Minister’s Discretionary Grant (HMDG) on National Health Authority’s (NHA) IT platform.
Objective: Digitization of healthcare services to enable the poor and needy people to avail the benefits of the health schemes on time.
About CGHS, RAN and HMDG:
CGHS:
i.It is a comprehensive Health Scheme started in 1954 for Serving Employees, Pensioners, Members of Parliament, ex-MPs, etc., and their dependent family members.
ii.Under the platform of CGHS, the retired pensioners will be provided with the Cashless treatment at empanelled centres in a seamless manner.
RAN: This scheme provides financial assistance up to Rs 15 lakhs to poor patients for medical treatment at Government hospitals for major life-threatening diseases/cancer/rare diseases.
HMDG: Under this scheme, a maximum amount of Rs 1,25,000 is provided to patients whose annual income does not exceed Rs 1,25,000 to meet a part of the expenditure on hospitalization/treatment in Government Hospitals.
About National Health Authority (NHA): 
It is the successor of the National Health Agency, reconstituted on 2nd January 2019, and it is the apex body responsible for implementing India’s flagship public health insurance/assurance scheme AB PM-JAY.

Expert Committee on VCC Headed by K.P. Krishnan Submitted its Report to IFSCAKrishnan panel on variable capital company submits report to IFSCAIn June 2021, the Expert Committee on Variable Capital Company (VCC) headed by K.P. Krishnan submitted its report on the feasibility of VCCs in the International Financial Services Centres(IFSCs) to the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA).

  • The committee recommended the adoption of a VCC-like legal structure to conduct fund management activity in IFSCs

Background:
i.IFSCA constituted the Committee of Experts to explore the potential for allowing another legal structure i.e. VCC as an additional option through which asset managers could pool the investors’ funds.
ii.Conventional 3 types for pooling of funds in India:

  • Limited Liability companies governed under the Companies Act, 2013
  • Limited Liability Partnerships(LLP) under the LLP Act
  • Trusts governed under the Indian Trusts Act, 1882

Govt Announced Schemes to Provide Pension for Dependents of COVID-19 Victims

The Government of India has announced schemes to provide a pension for the dependents of the COVID-19 victims among other benefits for the families who lost their earning members due to the pandemic under the Employees State Insurance scheme and Employees Provident Fund scheme.
Family Pension under Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC):
i.To support the families of the victims, the benefit of the Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) pension scheme for the employment-related death cases is extended to those who died due to COVID-19
ii.The dependents of the family are entitled to the benefits of a pension equal to around 90% of the average daily wages.
iii.The benefits will be made available with effect from 24th March 2020 to all cases till 24th March 2022.
Employees’ Deposit-Linked Insurance scheme:
i.The insurance benefits under the Employees’ Deposit-Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme are enhanced and liberalised.
ii.The maximum amount of the insurance has been increased from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 7 lakh and the minimum insurance benefit is retained as Rs 2.5 lakh. 
iii.This will be applied retrospectively from 15th February 2020 for the next 3 years(2023).
iv.To benefit families of contractual and casual workers, the condition of continuous employment in only one establishment has been liberalized, with benefits being made available to families of even those employees who may have changed jobs in the last 12 months preceding his death.
v.The labour ministry has estimated that eligible family members will get an additional benefit of Rs 2185 crore from EDLI fund in the years 2021-22 to 2023-24.Click here to read about the PM CARES for Children.

Global Unemployment Rate To be 5.7% in 2022; No recovery in global jobs till 2023: ILO’s WESO Trends 2021Global unemployment rate will be 5.7% in 2022On June 2, 2021, International Labour Organisation(ILO) released a report titled “World Employment and Social Outlook: Trends 2021(WESO Trends 2021)” stating global unemployment rate will be 5.7% in 2022, 6.3% in 2021 & there will no recovery in global jobs until 2023.
Note – Global Unemployment Rate was 5.4% in 2020.
Key Findings:
i.There will be 205 million unemployed people around the world in 2022, which is higher than the pre Covid numbers of 187 million in 2019.
ii.Job Gaps will be 75 million in 2021 & will fell to 23 million in 2022.Similarly Job Gaps and Reduced working will amount to the equivalent of 100 million full-time jobs in 2021 and 26 million full-time jobs in 2022.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Represented India in NAM Health Ministers Virtual Meet

Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Harsh Vardhan virtually participated in a meeting with Ministers of Health of the NAM (Non-Aligned Movement) Countries.
i.Harsh Vardhan stated that during COVID-19, India has supplied medicines to 123 partner countries including 59 NAM nations. He also noted that Ayushman Bharat, national health policy was aiming to provide free health assurance to over 500 million underprivileged people, making it the world’s largest health assurance scheme.
ii.NAM formed in 1961 is a forum of 120 developing world states that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. After the United Nations(UN), it is the largest grouping of states worldwide. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, is the current chairman of NAM.

NABARD Approves Rs 254 Crore For Drinking Water Projects In OdishaNabard sanctions Rs 254 crore for drinking water projects in OdishaThe National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned a Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) of Rs 254 crore for setting up two mega piped drinking water supply projects in Odisha.
Key Points:
i.The two mega projects will come up in two districts,

  • Jajpur district which will cover Badachana and Dharmasala blocks
  • Puri district which will cover Brahmagiri and Krushnaprasad blocks.

ii.70 litre per capital per day(LPCD) clean, safe hygienic portable drinking water will be provided at the consumer end.
iiii.The water supply will be provided through Functional Household Tape Connection (FHTC) with eight hours of supply in the project area.
Note:
The projects will help in achieving the goal of providing drinking water to the rural population by 2022.

Sebi inks pact with CSSF, Luxembourg to strengthen cooperation in securities regulationSebi inks pact with CSSF, Luxembourg to strengthen cooperationOn June 02, 2021, The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Luxembourg Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF) signed a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for mutual co-operation and technical assistance.
Objective:
To strengthen cross border cooperation in the area of securities regulation.
Key facts:
i.The MoU will facilitate mutual assistance, contribute towards the efficient performance of the supervisory functions, and enable effective enforcement of laws and regulations governing the securities markets.
ii.The MoU will enhance cross-border cooperation and exchange of information for the discharge of SEBI’s regulatory mandates.
ii.SEBI has already signed MoUs with securities regulators of various jurisdictions. It is also a signatory to the Multilateral MoU (MMoU) of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO).

GST Council set up 8-member Panel to Examine Tax Exemption on COVID-19 Material; Convened by Conrad SangmaGST Council forms 8-member panel to examine tax exemption

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council constituted an 8-member group of ministers (GoM) to examine the need for GST concession/exemption on a range of Covid-19 essentials such as vaccines, drugs, testing kits, and ventilators and make recommendations on the GST rates of COVID-19 relief material.Conrad Kongkal Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya will be the Convenor of the panel.

  • Currently, 5 percent GST is levied on domestically manufactured vaccines, 12 percent GST is levied for COVID-19 drugs and oxygen concentrators.
  • The GST Council in its 43rd meeting exempted the import of COVID-19 related goods such as medical oxygen and vaccines from GST till August 31,2021 even if they are imported on a payment basis or free of cost for donating to the government or a state-approved agency. Click here to know more
  • The GoM will be assisted by a Committee of officers from the Centre and the States, and the panel will submit its report by June 8, 2021.

An online medical platform,PharmEasy has acquired its rival Medlife, to create India’s largest online pharmacy.

  • API Holdings, the parent of PharmEasy, has acquired 100 percent equity shares of Medlife in return for 19.59 percent equity share capital, estimated at $250 million.
  • Medlife has now ceased to operate with effect from May 25, 2021, following the merger with PharmEasy.
  • With this acquisition, Medlife users will automatically become PharmEasy users.
  • With this total combined entity set, PharmEasy will serve around 2 million customers a month.

China successfully launches Fengyun-4B Satellite; Plans 3-Astronaut Space MissionChina successfully launches new generation meteorological satelliteOn 3rd June, China National Space Administration (CNSA) successfully launched “Fengyun-4B” (FY-4B) Meteorological satellite to Earth’s Geostationary Orbit. FY-4B is the 1st of China’s New-Generation Meteorological Satellites, which has an improved measurement resolution of 250 meters to scan Earth.
China plans to send 3-Astronauts to Tianzhou-2 Space Station
Yang Liwei, Director of the China Manned Space Engineering Office, announced China’s plan to send 3-Male Astronauts to its Newly launched Space Station, “Tianzhou-2”. The Astronauts will conduct Scientific tasks, including repair and maintenance on appliance switches on their 3-Month stay.

NASA Plans Two New Missions to Venus; New Zealand Made a Space Agreement With NASA

NASA plans two new missions to Venus DAVINCI+ and VERITAS

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) plans to implement two new missions DAVINCI+ and VERITAS to Venus, Earth’s nearest also called sister planet. NASA will spend $500 million for each mission. Both missions will be expected to launch between 2028-2030.

  • DAVINCI+ (short for Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble Gases, Chemistry and Imaging) – It will measure the composition of Venus’ atmosphere to understand how it formed and evolved, as well as determine whether the planet ever had an ocean.
  • VERITAS (an acronym for Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography and Spectroscopy) – This mission will map Venus’ surface to determine the planet’s geologic history and understand why it developed so differently than Earth.

Aim -Mission aim to study the atmospheric and geological features of Venus, also known as Earth’s sister planet. The closest planet to Earth and the second planet from the Sun, Venus is similar in structure but slightly smaller and much warmer than Earth.
New Zealand made a space agreement with NASA

  • New Zealand becomes the latest country to sign a space agreement with NASA.
  • New Zealand became the eleventh signatory to the Artemis Agreement, a blueprint for space cooperation and supporting the U.S. space agency’s plans to return humans to the moon by 2024 and to launch a historic human mission to Mars.

Cyrtodactylus bengkhuaiai: New Species of Gecko Discovered from Meghalaya and Mizoram; Named after Mizo ChieftainA new species of Gecko named after Mizo chieftain Cyrtodactylus bengkhuaiaiCyrtodactylus bengkhuaiai, a new species of bent toed gecko, was discovered from Meghalaya and Mizoram.The new species was named after the Mizoram Chieftain Bengkhuaia who fought against the british forces in India.
A team of scientists has discovered 4 new species of gecko, 2 from Meghalaya and 2 from Mizoram. These new species are a part of the Cyrtodactylus khasiensis group.

  • The study about the new species was published in Zootaxa, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published from New Zealand.

Other new species of Gecko
i.Cyrtodactylus aaronbaueri was the 2nd species of gecko recorded from Sailam village of Aizawl district of Mizoram.
ii.Cyrtodactylus aaronbaueri was named after Aaron Bauer, the world’s main professional on taxonomy of geckos.
iii.The scientists record 2 new species of gecko from Meghalaya.
iv.The 2 new species are the Karst dwelling bent-toed gecko “Cyrtodactylus karsticola” and bent toed gecko “Cyrtodactylus agarwali” named after Ishan Agarwal, India’s main herpetologists.
v.Both Cyrtodactylus karsticola and Cyrtodactylus agarwali were discovered from limestone caves in Siju village in the South Garo Hills district.

About Anerood Jugnauth:
i.Anerood Jugnauth was honoured with Padma Vibhusan in 2020 by the Government of India
ii.He was considered as the Father of the Mauritian Economic Miracle of the 1980s.
iii.He was the longest serving Prime Minister of Mauritius with more than 18 years of tenure.
iv.He served four consecutive terms as Prime Minister from 1982 to 1995 and was appointed again in 2000.
v.He also served as the President of Mauritius from 2003-2012.
vi.He was also honoured with Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award for strengthening India’s relationship with Mauritius.

The day acknowledges the sufferings of the children who are the victims of physical, mental and emotional abuse.
Background:
i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/ES-7/8 in August 1982 and proclaimed the 4th June of every year as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression.
ii.The first International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression was observed on 4th June 1983.

Punjab Cabinet Approved to Create SPV for Surface Water Supply SchemePb cabinet approves creation of special purpose vehiclei.Punjab Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister(CM) Amarinder Singh approved to create a special purpose vehicle (SPV) – Punjab Rural Water (Utility) Company for the operation and maintenance of multi village surface water supply schemes across Punjab.
ii.The SPV under the Department Of Water Supply and Sanitation (DWSS) will be a utility company.
iii.Aim: To ensure the supply of potable water on a long term sustainable basis to the rural areas of water quality affected districts.
iv.CM Amarinder Singh has been authorised as the Chairperson of the State Water Supply and Sanitation Mission to approve any modifications in the structure, role and responsibility, and funding pattern.
