UAE: First Arab Country to generate electricity from coal
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is all set to become the first Arab Gulf country, and probably the last, to generate electricity from coal, as; the Acwa Power of Saudi Arabia is developing a $3.4 billion Hassyan coal plant in Dubai.
- In this regard, the company has already inked a long time agreement with Japan’s Jera Co under which the latter will supply coal.
- The capacity of the plant will be 600 megawatts (MW) initially which will be increased to 2,400 MW by 2023.
Reason behind Coal based power generation by UAE:
As we all know, coal is the dirtiest fuel for power generation but this will be developed based on the guidelines for natural-gas plants. If met then Hassyan emits less carbon than the European Union (EU) and the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC).
- Hassyan will provide 20% of Dubai’s power and also reduce the electricity costs for locals.
- Already, Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) signed an agreement with Acwa more than four years ago to buy electricity from Hassyan for less than 5 cents per kilowatt-hour. This price was much cheaper than the power from solar farms in the emirate.
It should be noted that the coal-based power plants in the Gulf region have been abandoned and UAE is also moving towards the project powered by 100% solar, nuclear and other renewable by 2050 in order to reduce carbon emissions.
