India ranked fourth most powerful country in Asia

As per the Lowy Institute Asia Power Index 2021, India Ranked 4th most powerful country out of 26 countries, with an overall score of 37.7 out of 100.

  • India’s overall score declined by 2 points compared to 2020.
  • India again falls short of the major power threshold in 2021. India is one of 18 countries in Asia to trend downward in its overall score in 2021.

The top 10 countries for overall power in the Asia-Pacific region are the US, China, Japan, India, Russia, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.

Rank of India under 8 Thematic Measures:

i.The Asia Power Index 2021 evaluates international power in Asia through 131 indicators across 8 thematic measures such as military capability, defence networks, economic capability and relationships, diplomatic and cultural influence, as well as resilience and future resources.

ii.India finishes in 4th place in four measures such as economic capability, military capability, resilience and cultural influence. India ranks 3rd in the future resources measure, behind only the United States and China.

iii.The report further noted India as an underachiever relative to both its resources and potential.

iv.India’s negative power gap score has deteriorated further in 2021 relative to 2020.

i.The annual Asia Power Index  launched by the Lowy Institute in 2018. It measures resources and influence to rank the relative power of states in Asia.

ii.The Index ranks 26 countries and territories in terms of their capacity to shape their external environment.
