Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar Launched Horticulture Cluster Development Programme
Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar virtually launched the Horticulture Cluster Development Programme (CDP). Initially, the programme will be implemented in a pilot phase in 12 horticulture clusters out of the total 53 clusters selected for the programme.
- CDP will be implemented by the National Horticulture Board (NHB) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (MoA&FW).
Key points:
i.CDP will benefit about 10 lakh farmers and related stakeholders of the value chain, improve exports of the targeted crops by ~ 20 percent, and attract an estimated investment of Rs 10,000 crore after being implemented in all the 53 clusters.
ii.These 12 clusters will be implemented through Cluster Development Agencies (CDAs); they will be appointed on the recommendations of the respective State/UT Government.

UN Calls for Coordinated Action to Achieve Global Net Zero Emission: Climate Breakthroughs SummitThe Climate Breakthroughs Summit was virtually held on 27th May 2021, the United Nations(UN) has called for a coordinated action to secure the global net zero-emission and to reach the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5-degree Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels by 2050.
Note:
According to the World Meteorological Organization report, there is a 40% chance of the annual average global temperature temporarily reaching 1.5 degrees Celsius in at least one of the next 5 years.
Climate Breakthroughs Summit:
Climate Breakthroughs Summit was hosted in collaboration between the World Economic Forum, Mission Possible Partnership, the UN Climate Champions, and the United Kingdom Climate Change Conference (COP26) Presidency was held virtually on 27th May 2021.
Highlights:
i.The Climate leaders discussed the progress in various critical sectors of the global economy including steel, shipping, green hydrogen and nature.
ii.One of the key campaigns is the “Race to Zero” campaign which mobilises the support of 708 cities, 24 regions, 2,360 businesses, 163 investors, and 624 higher education institutions to move towards zero-carbon recovery for a sustainable future.
- Maersk, the world’s largest container shipping line and vessel operator, joined Race to Zero with the commitment to halving the emission by 2030.
iii.Around 40 healthcare institutions that represent more than 3000 healthcare facilities of 18 countries have committed to halving its emission by 2030.
iv.Their near-term target to have commercially viable, net-zero vessels operating in their fleet by 2023 is part of the critical next steps for an industry currently responsible for nearly 2.5% of global emissions.
WHO Named COVID-19 Variants 1st Found in India as ‘Kappa’ & ‘Delta’
The World Health Organisation(WHO) has named the B.1.617.1 and B.1.617.2 variants of COVID-19 that were first identified in India as ‘Kappa’ and ‘Delta’ respectively.
- This is aimed to help the people discussion of Variants of Concern (VOCs) and Variants of Interest (VOIs).
- This naming will not replace the existing scientific names.
Background:
The government of India has objected to terming the B.1.617 mutant of the novel coronavirus as “Indian Variant” and issued an advisory to the social media platforms to remove all the contents referring to the B.1.617.2 strain as the ‘Indian variant’.
Note:
Similarly the authorities of Singapore have issued an advisory on the reference of the “Singapore variant” of the virus on social media.
Other Variants of Covid-19: The B.1.1.7 strain first detected in the UK will be known as “Alpha”, while the B.1.351 variant detected in South Africa is now ‘Beta’, P.1 variant first found in Brazil is “Gamma” and the P.2 variant is “Zeta”. The strains found in the US are “Epsilon” and “Iota”.

India’s Largest Crypto Exchange WazirX Launched Country’s First NFT MarketplaceIndia’s largest crypto exchange, WazirX has announced its own Non-Fungible Token (NFT) marketplace, a first of its kind for India and South Asia.
About NFT:
i.NFTs are digital tokens that exist on a blockchain and represent ownership of digital items, like artwork, music, etc.
ii.It will have no listing price and “minimal gas fees” of $1 for transactions.
iii.The WazirX marketplace will run on the Binance Smart Chain and will use the company’s own WRX token.
iv.WazirX has committed 50,000 tokens as giveaways initially.
Features of NFT:
i.The NFTs are interoperable. This means they can be transferred out of the Binance Smart Chain to a different network of the buyer’s choosing.
ii.NFTs aren’t “fungible”, meaning they cannot replace each other.NFTs are more like trading cards, which can be exchanged, but one card can’t replace another.
iii.The marketplace has two sections, Spotlight and Discover. The former section will serve as a curated area for artists. The latter is art from 50 selected artists daily from the thousands of applications WazirX received.

CGA Reported Centre’s Fiscal Deficit for FY21 at 9.3%The Controller General of Accounts’ (CGA) revenue-expenditure data of the Union government for FY21 reported India’s fiscal deficit for FY21 at 9.3 percent / Rs 18.21 lakh crore of the gross domestic product (GDP), which is about Rs 27,194 crore lower than the Finance Ministry’s revised estimation(RE) of 9.5 percent.
Revised Fiscal deficit target:
In the February 2020, the government set the fiscal deficit at Rs 7.96 lakh crore or 3.5 percent of the GDP but later due to COVID-19, in February 2021, it revised the fiscal deficit target to 9.5 percent of GDP/ Rs 18,48,655 crore for FY21.
Key points:
i.CGA reported the revenue deficit for FY21 at 7.42 percent/Rs 16.32 trillion.
ii.Receipts: The government’s revenue receipts at FY21 stood at Rs 16.32 trillion, about 5 percent higher than RE (Rs 15.55 trillion). Net tax receipts was reported as Rs 14.24 lakh crore and the Revenue from excise duty was Rs 3.89 trillion (63 per cent year on year

SBI cuts India’s FY22 GDP Growth Estimate to 7.9% with W-Shaped recovery; Moody’s Estimated GDP growth at 9.3% in FY22
On June 01, 2021, State Bank of India (SBI) economists reduced India’s FY22 GDP growth estimates to 7.9 percent (the lowest among all analysts) from their earlier projection of 10.4 percent.
- They have stated the economy to grow faster than expected at 1.6 percent for the Q4 FY21, with a contraction of 7.3(-7.3) percent for the entire FY21.
- They have also estimated a real GDP growth of Rs 145.8 trillion in FY22 with a “W-shaped” recovery (earlier anticipated “V-shaped”).
-Moody’s Estimated GDP growth at 9.3% in FY22
i.Moody’s, the US-based rating agency, expects a decline in Indian economic activity in the Q1 FY22(April-June quarter), followed by a rebound, resulting in real, inflation-adjusted GDP growth of 9.3 percent in FY22 (earlier projection – 13.7 percent) and 7.9 percent in FY23.
ii.It gave ‘Baa3’ rating for India with a negative outlook due to the weak financial system under COVID1-19.

IIT Ropar Developed AmbiTag India’s first IoT device to record temperature for cold chain managementIndian Institute of Technology, Ropar (IIT Ropar), Punjab has developed “AmbiTag” India’s first IoT(Internet of Things) device which will record the real-time temperature of perishable products like food and dairy, vaccines, and body organs and blood during transportation.
AmbiTag was developed under the Technology Innovation Hub- AWaDH (Agriculture and Water Technology Development Hub) and its Startup ScratchNest.
About AmbiTag:
i.AmbiTag is a USB shaped device that records the temperature of the immediate surroundings ranging from -40 to +80 degrees in any time zone for 90 full days on a single charge.
ii.The device will be made available to all the companies involved in the transportation of COVID-19 vaccine from the production facilities to the vaccination centres.
iii.The production cost of the device is Rs 400.

i.At present India imports such devices from countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, Ireland, and China.
ii.The similar devices available in the international market records only for a period of 30 to 60 days.

Olympian, Record-Setting U.S. Sprinter Lee Evans Passed Away
American Sprinter & Olympian Lee Evans passed away at the age of 74. He won two gold medals in the 1968 Mexico Summer Olympics, setting world records in the 400 meters and the 4 × 400 meters relay. Evans co-founded the Olympic Project for Human Rights and was part of the athlete’s boycott and the Black Power movement.
- He achieved his first world record in 1966, as a member of the USA national team which broke the 4 × 400 m relay record at Los Angeles.

Haryana Governor S N Arya approves ‘The Haryana Recovery of Damages to Property Act’In May 2021, Haryana Governor Satyadev Narayan Arya gave approval to the “The Haryana Recovery of Damages to Property Act”. i.The MoU was signed in presence of Principal Secretary Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Horticulture departments, Navin Kumar Choudhary.
ii.Under this MoU, for transportation of perishable fruit produce from Jammu and Srinagar, the airline will charge ,
- Rs. 24 to Delhi
- Rs. 34 to Mumbai/Pune
- Rs. 47 to Chennai
- Rs. 48 to Kolkata
- Rs.50 to Bengaluru
iii.It includes the transportation of highly perishable items like Cherry, Plum, Apricots etc.
iv.Go-Air was selected from the Bid as it offered the lowest rates per kg for the transportation of perishable fruit produce.
