AYUSH Ministry Signed MoU with Herbal Industry Bodies to promote Medicinal Plants cultivation; e-marathon to start on Sept 28, 2020
On September 24, 2020, the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), Ministry of AYUSH signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Herbal Industry bodies during a virtual ceremony in the presence of Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary AYUSH with emphasis on raising immunity to fight coronavirus infection.
Objective :- The sale of immunity-boosting plants and herbs has increased such as tulsi, giloy, ashwagandha etc. Now to keep the sustainable supply of quality medicinal raw material to AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy), Nutraceutical and Herbal industry joined hands to promote medicinal plant cultivation.
i.The industry bodies with which MoU was inked include ADMA (Ayurvedic Drug Manufacturer’s Association), Mumbai (Maharashtra); AMAM (Association for Manufactures of Ayurvedic Medicines), New Delhi; AMMOI (Ayurvedic Medicines Manufacturers Organization of India), Thrissur (Kerala); AHNMI (Association for Herbal and Nutraceutical Manufacturers of India), Mumbai; FICCI (Federation of Indian Industries), New Delhi and CII (Confederation of Indian Industry), New Delhi.
ii.Ministry of AYUSH also joined hands with Rajagiri College of Social Sciences and Rajagiri Business School, Kochi (Kerala) to organise a novel e-marathon from 28th September 2020 to 10th October 2020 (15 days), as a part of the Ministry’s three-month campaign called “Ayush for Immunity”. The theme of the e-marathon is “Recharge Mental Health: During and beyond the Covid-19 Pandemic”.

India, Australia conducted Passage Exercise (PASSEX) in the East Indian Ocean region
i.On September 23-24, 2020, Indian Navy conducted a two-day long Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in the East Indian Ocean Region (IOR) where Indian side was represented by stealth frigate INS (Indian Naval Ship) Sahyadri and missile corvette INS Karmuk Australian side included HMAS Hobart along with Indian Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA), and helicopters from both the nations.
ii.This excercise was aimed at enhancing interoperability and to imbibe best practices from the other side.
iii.It should be noted that India-Australia conducts maritime exercise “AUSINDEX” biennially to boost defence cooperation in the maritime domain.

Indian Railways Extended its MoU with IIT Kanpur for Modernisation of its Infrastructure
On 24th September 2020, Indian Railways extended the Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur for modernisation of railway infrastructure.
The MoU was signed by Alka Arora Misra, principal executive director (T&MPP), Ministry of Railways and Prof AR Harish, Dean, R&D, IIT-Kanpur.

Features of MoU:
i.The MoU was extended to encourage collaborative research for the effective use of the scientific assets through the Centre for Railway Research (CRR) at IIT- Kanpur.
ii.This MoU will facilitate research in multiple areas which includes electrical locomotive, control and communication systems, traction installation, condition-based monitoring, train and track safety using signal processing, power and vehicle control electronics, driver interface systems, train level sensor networks and IoT, electrical safety, network control and staff training in related technical areas through the CRR.

The administrative unit of CRR in the department of electrical engineering in IIT Kanpur is working on the research domain of loco research and propulsion technologies, traction installation or OverHead Equipment (OHE) and associated electronics.
15th CII – Exim Bank Conclave on India-Africa Project Partnership held Virtually from New Delhi
i.On September 22-24, 2020, the 15th CII-Exim Bank Digital Conclave on India-Africa Project Partnership was held virtually from New Delhi which was organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and EXIM (Export-Import) Bank with the support of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Ministry of Commerce and Industry. One of the First Medical Devices Park to be Set up in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala
i.In 2019, Central government approved the setting up four medical device parks in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala on the lines of “Make in India” initiative and to provide world-class products at affordable prices for treatment.
ii.In this regard, on September 24, 2020, Chief Minister (CM) of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan laid the foundation stone for one of the first medical devices parks in the country, “MedSpark” at Life Science Park, Thonnakkal, Thiruvananthapuram.

PM Narendra Modi addresses Fit India Dialogue on First Anniversary of Fit India Movement
On September 25, 2020 Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Fit India Dialogue on the First Anniversary of Fit India Movement through virtual mode.
i.As part of the event, the Prime Minister interacted with Virat Kohli, Milind Soman, Rujuta Diwekar, Devendra Jhajharia, and Afshan Ashiq, who shared their life experiences and fitness Mantras.

India Provided 1.54 billion NR as Post-Earthquake Reconstruction Assistance in Nepal
i.The Nepal earthquake of 2015 also known as “Gorkha earthquake” had severely affected thousands of lives as well as the economy. At that time, India being the Nepal’s immediate neighbour, was the first to respond with Operation Maitri which provided rescue and relief by its armed forces and also announced a post-earthquake reconstruction package of US$ 1 billion (which comprises US$ 250 million grant and US$ 750 million concessional Line of Credit).
ii.As a part of fulfilling this post-earthquake reconstruction commitment, on 22nd September, 2020, Ms. Namgya Khampa, Deputy Chief of Mission of Embassy of India, handed over cheques worth NPR (Nepalese Rupees) 1.54 billion (about INR 96 crore) to Mr. Sishir Kumar Dhungana, Secretary, Ministry of Finance of Nepal towards housing & school sector assistance.

IIT Madras Developed an Indigenous Microprocessor “MOUSHIK” For IoT Devices
On 24th September 2020, Researchers of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras developed the indigenously made microprocessor “MOUSHIK”, a processor cum “system-on-chip” (SoC)for Internet of Things(IoT) devices. MOUSHIK will support the developing IoT devices which are the integral part of the Smart Cities of Digital India.
This project was funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Development:
i.MOUSHIK was conceptualized, designed and developed at the Pratap Subrahmanyam Centre for Digital Intelligence and Secure Hardware Architecture (PS-CDISHA) of the Reconfigurable Intelligent Systems Engineering(RISE) Group, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Madras.
ii.The foundry-specific backend design and fabrication of the processor was done at the Semi-Conductor Laboratory of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Chandigarh and the motherboard was manufactured at Bengaluru.
Application:
i.The processor can be used in smart cards, electronic voting machines(EVMs) and office management systems.
ii.This can also be used in personal health management systems, consumer electronics and water pump monitoring.
Note:
MOUSHIK is an RISC-V Microprocessor, an open, free ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) enabling processor innovation through open standard collaboration.
The viral part of the motherboard called ‘Ardonyx 1.0’ is constituted by the Shakthi MOUSHIK SOC.

Former Australian Cricketer & Commentator Dean Mervyn Jones Passed Away at 59
On 24th September 2020, Dean Mervyn Jones, former Australian and Victorian cricketer and Commentator passed away at the age of 59 in Mumbai, Maharashtra due to cardiac arrest. He was born on 24th March 1961 in Melbourne, Australia.
Career:
i.Jones made his debut representing Australia in 1984 and played around 52 tests matches during which he scored around 3631 runs which includes 11 centuries.
ii.He played around 164 One-Day Internationals(ODIs) for Australia scoring around 6068 runs.
iii.He played a vital role in the Australian Team to win their first World Cup in 1987.
After his retirement from playing cricket he became a commentator and columnist.
iv.He was the Coach of Islamabad United which won the Pakistan Super League in 2016 and 2018.
Honours and Achievements:
i.Jones scored 210 runs during the 1986 Madras test against India, which is still the highest score by an Australian cricketer in India.
ii.He was appointed as the Member of the Order of Australia in 2006 for his service to cricket as player, coach and commentator and for his charity works for people with cancer.
iii.He was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2019.
Sekhar Basu, PadmaShri Awardee, Veteran Atomic Scientist and Former Chairman of AEC Passed Away of COVID-19
On September 24, 2020 Sekhar Basu, Veteran Atomic Scientist and Former Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission(AEC) passed away at the age of 68 at a private hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal of COVID-19. He served as the Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and as director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). He was the recipient of PadmaShri(2014). He was born on September 20, 1952 in Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

On September 25, 2020 Renowned Indian Singer Sripathi Paditha Arathyula Balasubrahmanyam (Popularly known as SPB) passed away at a Private Hospital in Chennai at the age of 74 due to Cardio-Respiratory arrest. He was admitted to hospital after testing positive for COVID-19. Even Though he tested Negative on September 4, he continued to be on Ventilator and ECMO support, and breathed his last on September 25.
i.He was born on 4th June, 1946 at Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.
ii.He is a Six-time National Award Winner for Best Male Playback Singer (1979, 1981, 1983, 1988, 1995, 1996).

Regina Barzilay, a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory won the inaugural winner of the annual award instituted by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and funded by Chinese online education company Squirrel AI. She was awarded the top award (1 million USD) for using computer science to detect cancer and discover new drugs.
Fed Cup, Women’s World Cup of Tennis, Renamed as the Billie Jean King Cup: ITF
On September 17, 2020 International Tennis Federation(ITF) announced that Fed Cup, the women’s world cup of tennis, has been renamed as the Billie Jean King Cup by BNP Paribas, a French international banking group. This is the 1st time a major global team competition has been named after a woman. Billie Jean King is an American former World No. 1 professional tennis player. She is a global campaigner for equality who has dedicated her life to combating all forms of discrimination.
