Cabinet Approvals on June 23, 2021Cabinet Approval on June 23, 2021The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has granted approval to several initiatives. They are
i.Allocation of additional food grains under PM-GKAY 2021 (Phase-IV) for another 5 months i.e July to November, 2021. The total estimated expenditure of the additional allocation – INR 67, 266.44 crore will be borne completely by the Central Government.
ii.The Cabinet has given approval to merge and transfer all assets, liabilities, rights and obligations of ‘Central Railside Warehouse Company Limited (CRWC)’,  a Mini-Ratna  Category-II Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSE) with its holding enterprise ‘Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC)’.
iii.Agreement signed between India and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for the Exchange of Information and Assistance in Collection with respect to Taxes. It is the 1st  agreement on Taxes between the two countries.

  • The agreement proposes to facilitate exchange of information between the two countries and to provide assistance to each other in collection of tax claims.

India virtually hosts BRICS Green Hydrogen Summit 2021India host two day summit on Green Hydrogen Initiatives involving BRICS nationsIndia hosted the BRICS  (Brazil, Russia, India, China & South Africa) Green Hydrogen Summit 2021 which took place virtually from June 22-23, 2021. The event was anchored by NTPC Ltd, a Maharatna CPSU (Central Public Sector Undertaking) under the Ministry of Power.

  • The summit aims to address the challenges facing Green Hydrogen in terms of technology, efficiency, financial viability and scaling up of the technology.
  • Representatives from each country shared the initiatives taken by their countries on use of hydrogen and their future plans. They also discussed the relevance of different technologies developed on hydrogen.
  • During the meeting, India called for common international standards for green hydrogen to ensure safe transportation and storage of the new age emission-free fuel.

Hydrogen, when produced by electrolysis using renewable energy is known as Green Hydrogen, It has no carbon footprint. It is set to play a major role and build on the rapid increase of renewable resources across the world.

Denmark signs Framework Agreement on ISA with India: MEADenmark signs framework agreement on International Solar AllianceThe Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)  stated that the Kingdom of Denmark has signed the framework agreement of the International Solar Alliance Framework Agreement (ISA FA) and Instrument of Ratification with India.

  • With this, Denmark became the 1st country to ratify ISA FA after the amendments to it entered into force on January 8, 2021.
  • The signed copies of the agreement were received by an additional secretary (ER) as representative of MEA. MEA is the depositary of the ISA Framework Agreement.

International Solar Alliance (ISA)
ISA also known as International Agency for Solar Policy and Application (IASPA)  was launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi & the then-French President Francois Hollande ahead of the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP21 in Paris, France.
i.It aims to work for efficient consumption of solar energy for reducing dependence on fossil fuels & contribute to the implementation of the Paris  Climate Agreement through the massive deployment of solar energy.

  • It is an alliance of over 121 countries.
  • At present 77 Countries have signed and ratified the ISA FA, while 95 countries have signed the ISA FA.

CSE’s Ease of Living Index 2020 ranks Bengaluru as Most Liveable City in IndiaBengaluru hold first position in the liveability indexAccording to the ‘Ease of Living Index 2020’ released by Centre for Science & Environment (CSE) – Bengaluru (Karnataka) with a score of 66.7 has been ranked as India’s most liveable capital city followed by Chennai, Tamil Nadu at No. 2, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh at No. 3. The Index is part of the report titled State of India’s Environment 2021.

  • Only 3 state capitals feature in the Top 10 most liveable cities list.
  • This is the 2nd edition of Ease of Living Index 2020, the 1st edition was published in 2018.

Parameters
The Index is based on 4 Parameters – Quality of life, Economic ability, Sustainability & Citizens’ perceptions.  Based on which, Indian cities were rated out of 100.

  • The Ease of Living Index 2020 has included the parameter – citizen’s perception for the first time.

WhatsApp, NSDC launch Digital Skill Champions Programme for Indian YouthWhatsApp, NSDC launch initiative for skill developmentWhatsApp & National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) launched its ‘Digital Skill Champions Programme’. The programme aims to train Indian youth on digital skills to make them employable and more productive in their work environment.

  • The two entities have identified 2 broad areas of collaborations i) WhatsApp Digital Skills Academy and ii) Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) & WhatsApp Business App Training sessions.
  • Through this partnership, WhatsApp aims to enhance the digital skills of aspiring entrepreneurs and empower the youth of India to create a safe digital environment for all.

i.As part of WhatsApp Digital Skills Academy, youth from Tier-III & Tier-IV cities will be trained on critical aspects of digital safety and online privacy.

  • The initiative will be started on a pilot basis across 50 campuses in 5 states – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
  • The programme will be imparted through WhatsApp’s project implementation partner – InfiSpark.

ii.Under PMKK and WhatsApp Business App Training – WhatsApp will conduct training sessions to familiarise Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK)  trainers with the WhatsApp Business app.

  • India has 15 million users of WhatsApp Business app, globally there are around 50 million users.

Centre Notified the Constitution of Karnataka Coastal Zone Management AuthorityCentre notifies Karnataka Coastal Zone Management AuthorityIn June 2021, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified about the constitution of the ‘Karnataka Coastal Zone Management Authority’ under provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, to protect and improve the quality of the state’s coastal environment.

  • The authority is a 15-member body and it is headed by the Additional Chief Secretary, State Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment, Bengaluru.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Authority:
i.It has to regulate all developmental activities in the Coastal Regulation Zone(CRZ) areas as per the provisions of the CRZ notification issued by the Government of India on January 6, 2011.
ii.The proposals received from the Karnataka government have to be examined by it for changes in the classification of CRZ areas and in the Coastal Zone Management Plan and it has to make specific recommendations to the National Coastal Zone Management Authority.
iii.It has to enquire and review the cases involving violations of provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act and the Rules made thereunder. It also has been authorised to file complaints under Section 19 of the Act.
iv.It is mandated to report its activities once in 6months to the National Coastal Zone Management Authority.
v.The term of office of the present members is 3 years.

IFFCO, INAES and Cooperar signed MoU to Set Up Nano Urea Plant in ArgentinaIFFCO to set up nano urea plant inIndian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) Limited, a Multi-state cooperative society, is set to establish a nano urea liquid manufacturing plant in Argentina in partnership with Instituto Nacional de Asociativismoy Economia Social (INAES) and Confederacion Cooperativa De La Republica Argentina Ltda (Cooperar).

  • The IFFCO, INAES and Cooperar have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a nano urea liquid plant.
  • The MoU was signed by Ariel Guarco, President of Cooperar, Alexandre Roig President of INAES and Yogendra Kumar, Marketing Director of IFFCO during a virtual meeting.

Features of the MoU:
i.The IFFCO, INAES and Cooperar will analyze the feasibility of establishing the nano urea fertiliser plant in Argentina with mutual collaboration.
ii.This will also explore the possibility of cooperation in trade and investment in both India and Argentina, in areas of mutual interest, including agrochemicals and agricultural inputs to achieve sustainable development
iii.The MoU will enable the organisations to exchange ideas and develop business relationships, undertake joint research and training activities, and provide educational visits for better understanding.

It was launched by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education (MoE) under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Samagra Shiksha in 2019-20. BRICS Nations Agreed on Innovation Cooperation: 11th BRICS S&T Steering Committee MeetingBRICS nations agree on innovation co-operationThe BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) agreed on the innovation cooperation at the 11th BRICS S&T Steering Committee Meeting.
The meeting was hosted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, and led from the Indian side by Sanjeev Kumar Varshney, Advisor and Head International Cooperation.

  • The meeting was hosted as a part of a series of sectoral events including the Minister level meeting and BRICS Summit.

Key Points:
i.The proposal on the innovation cooperation made by India will be considered at the BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation Entrepreneurship (STIEP) working group for elaborating the action plan.
ii.Representatives from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) participated in the meeting.
Background:
i.The concept and action plan for BRICS Innovation Cooperation 2021-2024 were discussed during the meeting held on 22nd June 2021 to review the implementation of the Science, Technology and Innovation(STI) Calendar of Activities.
ii.The discussions have also included BRICS Young Scientist Conclave, BRICS Senior Official Meetings and BRICS Science and Technology Ministerial Meeting; BRICS Partnership in India’s Technology Summit, and call for Proposals 2021.
BRICS Young Scientist Conclave:
i.India Will host the 6th edition of the BRICS Young Scientist conclave from 13th to 16th September 2021.
ii.The thematic areas of the conclave include healthcare; energy solution and; interdisciplinary cyber-physical system.

It projected the growth for FY23 at 7.8 percent. • It lowered the growth outlook of India and stated the country’s recovery to be ‘less steep’ by comparing with the bounce in late 2020 and early 2021. • It reported permanent damage over the private and public sector balance sheet and it also mentioned the severe effect in the services sector compared with the manufacturing and exports that are less severely affected than that of 2020. • It stated that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) would not make changes in the interest rate, due to a rise in inflation above 6 percent (the upper end of RBI’s threshold). Vijay Deshwal Appointed as Magma Fincorp Group CEO

Poonawalla group that had earlier obtained Magma Fincorp appointed Vijay Deshwal as its Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

  • He would be responsible to take control of the lending, housing finance business and insurance business and will be managing his responsibilities out of the Pune office.
  • In May 2021,Poonawalla Group acquired a majority stake of 60 percent in Magma Fincorp through its holding company Rising Sun Holdings.

SEBI’s Ananta Barua And SK Mohanty Gets 2-Year Extension of Term as WTM

The Centre has extended the tenure of appointment of Ananta Barua and SK Mohanty as Whole-time Members (WTM) of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a period of two years.

  • The three-year terms of two WTMs, SK Mohanty and Ananta Barua, were to end in June and July 2021 respectively.
  • The order for re appointment is given by the Department of Economic Affairs in the Finance Ministry.

Adani Power to acquire 1,200 MW Essar Power’s Mahan projectPower Mahan projectAdani Power Limited (APL) has received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from a Resolution Professional of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for the acquisition of 1,200 megawatt (MW) Essar Power’s Mahan Project located at Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh.

  • This acquisition is estimated at Rs 3,000 crore.

Background:
This LoI follows Adani Power’s successful bid for the project which has been approved by a Committee of Creditors (CoC) of Essar Power M P Ltd (EPMPL). The Mahan project operates two units of 600 MW each which can be expanded by one more unit to make it a 1,800 MW project.
Points to be noted:
i.Last month, Adani Group’s renewable energy arm Adani Green Energy acquired SB Energy’s solar and wind power portfolio from Softbank and Bharti Group.
ii.Adani Power is India’s largest power producer in the private sector.
iii.It’s thermal project consists of 12,500 MW of generation capacity spread across Gujarat, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. It is also commissioning 1,600 MW of project in Jharkhand.

Kiren Rijiju launched India’s Olympic theme song titled “Lakshya Tera Samne Hai”

On June 23, 2021, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Kiren Rijiju, Ministry of Youth Affairs And Sports (MoYAS) launched the official Olympic theme song titled “Lakshya Tera Samne Hai” of the Indian contingent for the Tokyo Olympics or Summer Games (July 23 to August 8, 2021). The song has been composed and sung by singer Mohit Chauhan.

  • It was launched during an event of International Olympic Day at the JLN (Jawaharlal Nehru) Stadium in New Delhi organised by Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
  • IOA president Narinder Batra and secretary-general Rajeev Mehta also participated in the event.

Delhi Govt Notified Mukhyamantri COVID-19 Pariwar Aarthik Sahayata Yojana: Scheme to Provide Financial Aid to Covid Victims’ KinDelhi govt notifies scheme for providing financial assistance to Covid victims' kinArvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi has announced the “Mukhyamantri COVID-19 Pariwar Aarthik Sahayata Yojana” to provide financial assistance to the family members of the COVID-19 victims.
The scheme was notified by the Social Welfare Department, Government of Delhi.
About Mukhyamantri COVID-19 Pariwar Aarthik Sahayata Yojana:
i.Under the scheme, financial assistance of Rs 50000 will be provided to the family of COVID-19 victims and an additional Rs 2500 per month will be given if the deceased was the sole breadwinner of the family.
ii.The additional financial aid of Rs 2500 per month will also be provided to the children who lost both their parent or single parent to COVID-19. The aid will be continued till they achieve 25 years of age.
iii.The state government has also affirmed to provide free education for the children of the COVID-19 victims.
iv.The government of Delhi will also consider a member of the victim’s family to be enrolled as a civil defence volunteer.

Odisha Govt Partners with UN WFP to Empower Women SHGs, Strengthen LivelihoodOdisha govt joins hands with UN WFP to empowerIn June 2021, the government of Odisha and the United Nations World Food Programme (UN WFP) made a partnership to improve the household food and nutritional security in Odisha by strengthening the livelihood initiatives and working with thousands of state-supported Women’s Self-Help Groups (WSHGs).

  • The partnership which is intended to support WSHGs is effective till December 2023.

Key Points:
i.Objective: To address and reduce the vulnerabilities around food security caused by COVD-19, and empower the livelihood and income of the women.
ii.An agreement was made under the partnership to support the state’s WSHGs by providing technical assistance and capacity development for long-term food security.
iii.Under the partnership, the WSHGs will be linked with government procurement systems to increase awareness of entitlements and improve the functions of the groups.

Maharashtra Approved Transfer of MIAL Ownership to Adani Airport HoldingsAdani Airport HoldingsThe Maharashtra cabinet approved the proposal of transferring the ownership of the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL)which was constructing the Navi Mumbai international airport to the Adani Airport Holdings.
Key Points:
i.Earlier CIDCO( City and Industrial Development Corporation ), the nodal agency for the project, had awarded the contract for construction of the airport in October 2017 to GVK Airport Developers Limited
ii.But Adani Group recently acquired a 50.50 percent stake of GVK Airport Developers Limited.
iii.The Central government, SEBI and CIDCO also approved the change in ownership of MIAL.
iv.Nearly 1160 hectares of land has been acquired and the first phase of the airport is expected to be completed in 2023-24.
