Narendra Modi inaugurated 20th World Sustainable Development Summit 2021World Sustainable Development Summit 2021i.On February 10-12, 2021, the 20th World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2021 was held on the theme “Redefining our common future: Safe and secure environment for all”.

Indian Navy signs Contract with Titagarh Wagon for Constructing 5 DSCsIndian Navy inks deal with Titagarh WagonsOn February 12, 2021, Indian Navy signed a contract for construction of 5 Diving Support Crafts (DSCs) with Titagarh Wagons Ltd, Kolkata (West Bengal) under the ‘Make in India’ initiative of Government of India.

  • The value of order is about Rs.174.76 crore only. As per the contract, the DSC has to be supplied within 30 months approximately.
  • Upon commissioning, the DSC will meet the needs of Command Clearance Diving Teams (CCDTs) which provide assistance to ships which are inside or come close to harbour for underwater repair, maintenance and salvage.
  • DSCs are equipped with modern equipment and tools for performing diving operations.
  • It will serve as a perfect platform conducting training of Indian Navy’s diving cadre.

India to Fund NR 142 million for Restoration of 3 Cultural Heritage Projects in NepalIndia to fund USD 50M for restorationi.On February 12, 2021 India committed to Nepal that it will fund Nepali Rupees(NR) 142 million to restore 3 cultural heritage projects in Nepal.
3 Cultural Heritage Projects:

  • Conservation and furnishing of Seto Machindranath Temple(Total cost- NRs 626 million)
  • Construction of Dharamshala at Budhanilkantha (Total cost-NRs. 334 million )
  • Conservation and development of Kumari Chhen and Kumari Niwas in Lalitpur district (Total cost- NRs 456 million)

ii.These projects are implemented as part of the US $50 million grant assistance committed by the Government of India for post-earthquake reconstruction of the Cultural Heritage sites across 8 districts of Nepal.

Linxon commissions Nepal’s first 400-kV GIS substation at Dhalkebar

On behalf of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Engineering firm Linxon has successfully commissioned Nepal’s first 400-kilovolt gas insulated substation (GIS) at Dhalkebar which facilitated the 400-kV Muzaffarpur (India)-Dhalkebar (Nepal) line.

  • The GIS was inaugurated on February 1, 2021 where NEA presented a certificate of commendation to Linxon India Private Ltd for the successful completion.

How will this project be beneficial?
–It will upgrade the transmission of up to 1,000 megawatts of electricity through Nepal’s first ever high-voltage cross-border transmission line.
–The substation, being the major hub for power exchange between Nepal and India, will ease the export-import of power.

–Scope of supply included testing and commissioning of the high voltage equipment, (15 bays with two bus bars, three 315 MVA transformers and an 80 MVAR reactor)

RIL Gets world’s 1st Carbon-Neutral Oil from Oxy Low Carbon Ventures, USReliance Industries gets world's first 'carbon-neutral' oil from USReliance Industries Limited (RIL) has received 2 million barrels cargo of ‘carbon-neutral oil’ from Oxy Low Carbon Ventures (OLCV), a division of US oil major Occidental on January 28, 2021 at Jamnagar, Gujarat. It is the world’s 1st consignment of carbon-neutral oil and is also the energy industry’s 1st major petroleum shipment.
Purpose: RIL to become a net zero-carbon company by 2035.
Points to be Noted:
i.The transaction was arranged in conjunction with Macquarie Group’s Commodities and Global Markets group (Macquarie).
ii.Occidental produced this oil in the US Permian Basin and shipped to RIL using Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) Sea Pearl.
Making of Carbon-Neutral Oil
i.Oxy Low Carbon Ventures and Macquarie will offset the carbon dioxide equal to that associated with the production, delivery and refining of the crude oil.
ii.The use of the resulting product through the retirement of carbon offset credits will make the oil ‘carbon-neutral’.
Note: The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are associated with the entire crude lifecycle will be offset with Carbon-Neutral Oil.
About the Transaction:
i.This transaction is regarded as the 1st step to create a new market for climate-differentiated crude oil
ii.It also acts as a bridge to develop further differentiated petroleum products, net-zero oil, which Occidental aims to  produce by capturing and isolating atmospheric CO2 through industrial-scale direct air capture (DAC) facilities and geological  isolation.
Key Info:
The offsets were sourced from a variety of projects verified under the Verra Verified Carbon Standard meeting eligibility criteria for the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
Additional Info
Occidental was the first U.S. based international energy company to announce an ambition to achieve net-zero GHG emissions associated with the use of its products by 2050.

India’s retail inflation at 16-month low of 4.06% in January 2021: NSO

The National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is released the All India Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January 2021. As per the index,  India’s retail inflation eased to a 16-month low at 4.06% in January 2021. The retail inflation was  4.59% in December 2020. The food inflation fell to a 20-month low of 1.89% in January 2021 . The retail inflation in rural India was 3.23% and in urban India was 5.06%.

HAL to Develop 1st of its Kind Unmanned Pseudo Satellite “CATS”HAL to develop unmanned pseudo satellitei.In a first of its kind in the world, the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is developing a futuristic high altitude unmanned pseudo satellite namely Combined Air Teaming System (CATS) with a start-up company.
ii.Once developed the pseudo-satellite will be capable of taking information flying unmanned around 70,000 ft for 2-3 months.
iii.It can hit the target at a distance of 700 kilometres or can go to 350 kilometres and come back. It can also carry ammunition, missiles if needed.

China’s Tianwen-1 enters Mars Orbit, Joining UAE’s Hope Probe

On February 10, 2021, Chinese Spacecraft ‘Tianwen-1’ (Means “Quest for Heavenly Truth”) entered the Mars Orbit. It became the World’s second one in two days after United Arab Emirates’ ‘Hope’ Space Probe entered the Mars Orbit on February 9, 2021. The Chinese Spacecraft will probe for signs of ancient life on Mars.  USA’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration rover called ‘Perseverance’ is aiming for a landing on Mars on February 18, 2021.

International Epilepsy Day 2021 – February 8 International Epilepsy Day 2021i.The International Epilepsy Day is annually observed across the globe on the second Monday of February. The day aims to create awareness about epilepsy and its treatment and the need to bring the treatment to all who need it.
ii.The International Epilepsy Day is a joint initiative of the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) and the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE).
iii.The theme of the International Epilepsy Day 2021 is “Epilepsy is more than seizures”. 
iv.The landmarks across the globe were lit up purple to mark the International Epilepsy Day 2021.

Bihar Becomes 1st Indian State to sign MoU with UNEP for development of Low-Carbon Development PathwayBihar in pact with UNEP for low-carbon development pathwayOn February 12, 2021, Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to develop a framework for achieving climate resilience & low-carbon development in the state by 2040. Bihar became the 1st Indian State to sign such an agreement.
As part of the Agreement, UNEP will assist Bihar

  • To prepare a Greenhouse Gas Inventory (GHG) & Carbon Footprint Analyses
  • To develop Climate Impact Vulnerability Assessments
  • Increase the capacity of Bihar’s Government departments to deal with climate-related issues.
  • Revising Bihar’s State Action Plans on Climate Change (SAPCC) to align with India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change under Paris Agreement.

The agreement was signed by Atul Bagai, UNEP India head & S Chandrasekar, Member Secretary of the BSPCB.
Background:
The MoU is part of an announcement made by Bihar & UNEP in September 2020.
i.In September, 2020 Dipak Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary (forests) stated that Bihar had signed a MoU with UNEP for conducting a 2-year study towards making carbon neutrality-carbon emission equal carbon sequestration (Carbon Emission Zero) – Target in Bihar by 2040.

  • The study was to be carried out for a period of 2 years at a cost of INR 1.4 Crores.

Justice Puligoru Venkata Sanjay Kumar Appointed as Chief Justice of Manipur High CourtPuligoru Venkata Sanjay Kumar appointed chief justice of Manipur HCOn 12th February 2021, Ramnath Govind, President of India, appointed Justice Puligoru Venkata Sanjay Kumar, a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court as the chief justice of Manipur High Court.Manipur Governor Dr. Najma A. Heptulla administered the oath of office.
Puligoru Venkata Sanjay Kumar was also appointed as an additional judge of Bombay High Court.
The notification of this appointment was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice. 
About Puligoru Venkata Sanjay Kumar:
i.Puligoru Venkata Sanjay Kumar hails from Andhra Pradesh.
ii.He has represented the High Court of Andhra Pradesh and subordinate judiciary.
iii.He has also served as the government pleader in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh from 2000 to 2003.
iv.He was later elevated to the Bench as the Additional Judge, High court of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad in 2008.
v.He became the permanent judge of the high court of Andhra Pradesh in 2010 and later transferred to Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2019.
