Union Minister Prakash Javadekar flags off ‘Jaldoot’ bus for water conservation initiative in Pune
On September 14, 2019 the union minister for environment, forest and climate change Shri Prakash Javadekar (also Information & Broadcasting minister) flagged off a bus named “Jaldoot” in Pune, Maharashtra which showcases the importance of water conservation. This bus which is redesigned to create “Jaldoot: Travelling Exhibition on Jalshakti Abhiyan”, would travel to 8 districts of Maharashtra for 2 months and would also convey to people about the work of govt. in last 100 days, along with bold initiatives and decisions undertaken. Key points
i. The bus was developed by Regional Outreach Bureau(ROB) of Pune under the ministry of information and broadcasting in association with MSRTC (Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation). Oath on ‘swachhta’(cleanliness) was undertaken in the event, administered by Javdekar.
ii. The aim of jal shakti ministry to provide piped drinking water by 2024 was reminded.
iii. Members present: Girish Bapat and Supria Sule(both Members of Parliament(MP)), Satyendra Sharan- Director General of ROB, RN Mishra- director general of Press Information Bureau(PIB)- west zone and other officials were present.
Javadekar inaugurates the renovated Jayakar bungalow at NFAI in Pune, Maharashtra
On September 15, 2019, Shri Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Environment, Forest and Climate Change has inaugurated the renovated Jayakar bungalow (a famous heritage building of Pune) at National Film Archive of India (NFAI)in Pune, Maharashtra. The bungalow has been renovated with an outlay of 3 crore rupees.Key points:
i. The renovated bungalow have a digital film library and private space to watch the films of NFAI’s collection. Javadekar also released a special booklet ‘Parampara: An ode to Jayakar Bungalow’, which tells the history of the bungalow as well as its restoration. The special feature of this booklet is that eminent film personalities like Shabana Azmi and Rehana Sultan have shared their experiences. Javadekar also launched a mobile app for booking to watch movies at NFAI.
ii. Jayakar Bungalow was originally built in 1910. It is named after the first Vice Chancellor of the University of Pune, MR Jayakar. In the past, the ownership of the bungalow came from the hands of Jayakar to the Indian Law Society and then to FTII (Film and Television Institute of India ) and finally to NFAI.
iii. The two-storey bungalow is designed with wooden floors, The narrow staircases and high shelves of books symbolize British architecture.

Polish Minister Marcin Przydacz unveils memorial pillar in Valivade, Kolhapur in memory of refugee Polish families during WWII
On September 14, 2019, Marcin Przydacz, the deputy foreign minister of Poland unveiled a memorial pillar in Valivade in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra in memory of the 5000 polish refugee families that settled in Valivade during World War II (WWII) 80 years ago.Key points
i. A permanent museum is also expected to be set up within 1 year in memory of the refugees containing Photographs, paintings, and other important materials from that era.
ii. Members present: Polish Ambassador to India Adam Burakowski and Guardian Minister of Kolhapur Chandrakant Patil and other officials were present during the event.
Special training program for Maldivian civil servants to be run from September 16 – 28, 2019 at Mussoorie and New Delhi
India will conduct a two-week special training programme (STP) for 32-member delegation (70% of delegates are women officials) of Maldivian Civil Servants at the Mussoorie (Uttarakhand) and New Delhi from 16 – 28 September 2019.
Key points:
i. The training drive is a part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on ‘Training and Capacity Building Programme’ between India’s National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG) and Maldives Civil Service Commission (CSC) signed by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi during his visit to Male ,Maldives in June 2019.During the visit PM also emphasised India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and affirmed India’s support to the Indian Ocean archipelago for socio-economic development and boosting of democratic and independent organization.
ii. Under the MoU, 10 training programmes will be conducted from September 2019 to December 2020.
iii. The inaugural event would be chaired by K. V. Eapen, Secretary DARPG (Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievance), Fatimath Amira, Member Civil Services Commission and V. Srinivas, Additional Secretary DARPG.

GSTN makes Aadhaar verification or physical verification mandatory for new dealers from January 1, 2020
On September 14, 2019, The group of ministers of Good and Service Tax Network (GSTN) headed by Sushil Kumar Modi (Bihar deputy chief minister) notified that all the new dealers will have to mandatorily make Aadhaar verification or physical verification from January 1, 2020. This move is aimed to check malpractices in GST.
Key Points:
i. Earlier, it was optional for the dealers.
ii.Those who don’t want Aadhaar authentication, physical verification will be carried out, which will be completed in three days.
iii. The GST refunds will be made online from September 24, 2019, from a single source either by the Central GST or State GST.

On September 13, 2019, the Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Chhaya Sharma who led the investigation of the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape was selected for the 2019 Asia Society Game Changers Award along with six others by Asia Society, which is a leading educational organization. Bangladesh school project, ‘Arcadia Education Project’ wins Aga Khan Architecture Award 2019 at Kajan, republic of Tatarstan, Russia
The Arcadia Education Project in South Kanarchor of Bangladesh has won the prestigious Aga Khan Architecture Award 2019 in Kajan, the republic of Tatarstan, Russia. The novel project is about the construction of a floating school in an area which is underwater during monsoon for the welfare of marginalised children in Bangladesh.Key points:
i. The architect of the project was Saif Ul Haque, who designed a school and used only local materials such as bamboo, used tyres and steel drums , local workforce and artisans for constructing the school, which remains on the ground during the dry season and floats when the area is submerged in water during monsoon.
ii. Five other projects from other countries – Alioune Diop University Teaching and Research Unit (Senegal) , Palestinian Museum (Palestine) , Public Spaces Development Programme(Republic of Tatarstan) , Revitalisation of Muharraq (Bahrain), and Wasit Wetland Centre(Sharjah, United Arab Emirates) ) were also given the award.
iii. The Aga Khan Award for Architecture was instituted by the Aga Khan in 1977 , is given every three years to projects that set new standards of excellence in architecture, planning practices, historic preservation and landscape architecture.

Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ became the only Indian film in “The Guardian” list of 100 Best Films of the 21st century
The Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s film ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ released in 2012 featuring Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Piyush Mishra, and Richa Chadha, became the only Indian film in British daily “The Guardian list of the 100 Best Films of the 21st century”. The Myanmar Badminton Federation (MBF) hosted the first ever International Series badminton tournament, the “Myanmar International Series 2019” at the National Badminton Stadium in Yangon, the largest city of Myanmar from September 10-15. MBF hosted the event after obtaining permission from the Badminton World Federation(BWF) for the tournament. The total prize money of this tournament is US(United States) $10,000.

Pankaj Advani wins IBSF World Billiards Championship 2019 title, becomes world champion for 22nd time
On September 15, 2019, India’s top billiards and snooker player, Pankaj Advani (34) of Bangalore , Karnataka has won the 22nd world title of his career with the fourth consecutive IBSF (International Billiards & Snooker Federation) World Billiards title 2019 in the 150 up format held in Mandalay, Myanmar. This is his fifth title in the last 6 years in the short billiards format. Like 2018, this year too, Advani won the final with 6–2 scores against Nay Thway Oo of Myanmar.Key points:
i. Advani got off to a great start to the match and soon took a 3–0 points lead with a break of 145, 89 and 127. Thway Oo won the next frame with breaks of 63 and 62. Advani then won the match with an unbreakable break of 150 and a break of 74 to settle for a second consecutive silver medal at Thway Oo.
IBSF World Billiards Championship:
It was previously known as the World Amateur Billiards Championship, is the premier, international, non-professional tournament for the game of English billiards. Dating to some form to 1951, the event has been sanctioned by the International Billiards and Snooker Federation since 1973.
Indonesia’s Rory Hie wins maiden Classic Golf and Country Club International Championship 2019 in Nuh, Haryana; India’s Rashid ranks second
On September 15, 2019, Indonesian golfer Rory Hie won Classic Golf and Country Club International Championship 2019 and was awarded a cash prize of $300,000 and a trophy. He is also the first Indonesian to win this title. The event was held from September 12-15 at Nuh city in Haryana. Indian golfer Rashid Khan and Korea’s Byungjun Kim secured the second position.

i. The Classic Golf and Country Club International Championship is the newest tournament added to the Asian Tour in 2019.

India clinched 125 medals in Western Asia Youth and Junior Chess Championship 2019
Western Asian Youth and Junior Chess Championships 2019 was held from September 6-10, 2019 at Tivoli Grand Resort Hotel, New Delhi. It was organized by Delhi Chess Association (DCA). It was the first edition and was held in 3 formats – standard, rapid, and blitz. India won 125 medals. Key Points:
i. In the classical time format event, India clinched 41 out of 48 medals at stake out of which 14 were gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze.
ii. In the blitz format, India won 41 medals, including 15 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze.
iii. Over the three time-formats, India finished with 44 gold, 41 silver and 40 bronze medals.
iv. Winner of the under-20 section- Sakshi Chitlange of India received a Woman Grandmaster norm.
v. Only Uzbekistan’s Abdimalik Abdisalimov (under-20) and Kazakhstan’s Abilmansur Abdikhair (under-16) clinched gold medals in their respective categories while all other gold medals were clinched by Indians.

Spain wins 18th Men’s World Basketball Championship 2019 held in Beijing after 13 years
Spain defeated Argentina to win the18th Men’s FIBA (Federation Internationale de Basketball ) World Basketball Championship 2019 in the final played Wukesong Sports Arena in Beijing, China from 31 August 2019 to 15 September 2019. Key points:
i. The Spanish team won the match by a margin of 95-75 scores. It became the champion after 13 years. The last time (2006) it won this title was in Japan. Spain became the fifth country to win the World Cup 2 times. Yugoslavia and America are five-time champions. The Soviet Union won 3 title and Brazil became champions 2 times.

Afghanistan breaks own record of most Consecutive T20I Victories and Equals Australia’s Top Record at Dhaka, Bangladesh
On September 15, 2019, Afghanistan cricket team created a new record of most consecutive T20I (twenty twenty International) victories after their 12th successive win in T20I during 2019 Bangladesh Tri-Nation Series held at Dhaka, Bangladesh against Bangladesh. Mayank Vaid becomes 1st Indian to complete Enduroman triathlon in 2019, breaks world record for shortest completion time held between London and Paris
On September 15, 2019, Mayank Vaid became the first Indian and the 44th person to complete Enduroman, a triathlon from England to France which is considered as toughest endurance competition in the world. The event started in Marble Arch, London and ended in Arc de Triomphe, Paris, France. He also broke the world record for the shortest completion time in the ‘Enduroman – Arch to Arc’ triathlon in 50 hours and 24 minutes. Key points

Kenya’s Kamworor creates world record at the Copenhagen Half Marathon 2019
Kenya‘s Geoffrey Kamworor, aged 26, finished the Copenhagen Half Marathon 2019 in men’s category at 58min 01sec, 17 seconds earlier than the record held by Abraham Kiptum (58:18) of Kenya in the Valencia Half Marathon in Valencia, Spain on 28 October 2018 and created a new world record.i. The marathon was the 5th annual edition of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Gold Label event, Copenhagen Half Marathon, held at Copenhagen, Denmark on September 15, 2019 covering a distance of 21.098km.
ii. In women’s category, Birhane Dibaba of Ethiopia clinched the title by finishing the race at 1 hour 05 minutes 57 seconds.

Writer and Dissident of Hungary’s movement of communist rule Gyorgy Konrad, passed away at the age of 86
On September 14, 2019, Gyorgy Konrad, famous writer and sociologist who was also familiar in Hungary’s dissident movement under Communist rule, passed away at the age of 86 in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.Key points
i. Born on April 2, 1933, in Debrecen, eastern Hungary, Konrad’s famous works were 1969 novel “The Case Worker” and 2007 memoir “A Guest in My Own Country: A Hungarian Life”.
ii. He was president of the writers’ association PEN International from 1990-1993 and also served as president of the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1997-2003.
American historian and Francis Parkman awardee Jean Edward Smith passed away at 86
On September 14, 2019, Washington (America) born famous historian Jean Edward Smith, known for his books on Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Ulysses Grant passed away at the age of 86 in Huntington, West Virginia, America, after suffering from Parkinson’s disease.Key points
i. Awards: Born on October 13, 1932, Edward won Francis Parkman award in 2007 for his book on Franklin Roosevelt (32nd American president) named “FDR” as the best book of the year on American history.
ii. His final book “The Liberation of Paris,” about how Allied forces drove Nazi occupiers out of Paris in 1944, was published in July 2019.

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer or World ozone day observed on September 16
The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer by the United Nations (UN) proclaimed in December 19, 1994, is observed annually on September 16 under the resolution A/RES/49/114. This day marks the drafting of the Montreal Protocol under the Vienna convention for the protection of the ozone layer signed by 28 nations in Montreal, Canada on substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, in 1987. The theme for the year 2019 is “32 Years and Healing”. The year 2019 marked the 25th World Ozone Day celebrations. Key points
i. This day was first observed in the year 1995. Montreal Protocol is regarded as the world’s most successful environmental agreement.
Celebration in India:
i. The event for World Ozone Day 2019 was held in New Delhi, which was addressed by Union Minister of State (MoS) for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Shri Babul Supriyo.
ii. MoEFCC signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET), for providing Competency Enhancement of System Houses and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the foam manufacturing sector for ensuring smooth and sustainable phase-out of HCFC-141b.
iii. Four publications related to RAC (Refrigeration and Air-conditioning) service sector which have been developed by Ozone Cell, MoEF&CC along with GIZ (German development agency) and UN Environment were also launched.
iv. A booklet on ‘Montreal Protocol – India’s Success Story’ and poster and sticker of award-winning students were also released.
v. Important – In March 2019, India became one of the first countries in the world to launch a comprehensive Cooling Action plan title “India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP)”.

Veteran music director Usha Khanna to be honoured with Maharashtra government’s “Lata Mangeshkar Award” for the year 2019-20
The Cultural Affairs Minister of the government of Maharashtra, Mr. Vinod Tawde announced that Veteran music director Usha Khanna, aged 78, has been awarded the Maharashtra government’s “Lata Mangeshkar Award” for the year 2019-20.Key Points:
i. Khanna began his career through the Bollywood film “Dil Deke Dekho” (1959). Her last movie as a music composer was “Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya” (2003). She also composed music for some Hindi television serials. Yesudas, bagged the Filmfare Award 1980 for male playback singer for the song “Dil Ke Tukde, Tukde Karke” (Dada, 1979) composed by Khanna.
ii. The award was instituted in 1993 and consists of Rs 5,00,000 cash, a citation and a memento.
iii. The previous recipients of the award include Krishna Kalle, Ram-Laxman, Uttam Singh, Pushpa Pagdhare and other personalities.

First speaker of bifurcated AP, Dr Kodela Siprasada Rao passed away at the age of 72
Former first speaker of the Andhra Pradesh (AP) Legislative Assembly, after bifurcation of AP, and one of the key leaders of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Dr Kodela Sivaprasada Rao, aged 72, passed away in Hyderabad, Telangana. He was found hanging in his house and expired while undergoing treatment at Basava Tarakam Cancer Hospital in Hyderabad.i. He was a 6 time Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Narsaraopet constituency in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh.
ii. He had also served as a Minister in the Cabinets of the late N.T. Rama Rao and N. Chandrababu Naidu.
iii. A medical doctor by profession, he had served as the Chairman of the hospital set up by NT Rama Rao’s family in memory of NTR’s wife, Basava Tarakam.
Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu inaugurated 24 kW Dikshi Hydroelectric Project, state’s first community-managed mini-hydroelectric project
On September 14, 2019, The Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Pema Khandu has inaugurated the 24 kW(Kilowatt ) Dikshi Hydroelectric Project on the Phudungto river at Dikshi village in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. The project was developed by a Hyderabad (Telangana) based firm Devi Energies Private Limited. It is State’s first community-managed mini-hydro electric project and also the first independent power project of its kind in the Northeast.Key points:
i. The power plant is expected to generate 112.40 gigawatt-hours of electricity for addressing the power requirements of East and West Kameng districts besides major defence establishments.
ii. The plant consists 3 Francis type turbo-generators having capacity of 8.0 MW each, was completed in a record time of 4 years since commencement in 2016 with an investment amount of about 430 crore rupees.
iii. The Arunachal State government will get 10% as free power from the 2nd year of the plant’s operation.

Justice P Laxman Reddy appointed as the first Lokayukta of Andhra Pradesh, will serve a term of 5 years
On september 15 2019, Justice P. Lakshmana Reddy was sworn in as the Andhra Pradesh’s (AP) first Lokayukta after the state’s bifurcation in 2014. Reddy will have a five-year term as Lokayukta. AP Governor Biswabhushan Harichandan administered the oath of office to Justice Reddy at a function in Vijayawada.

i. AP Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy, High Court judges, senior government officials were present on the occasion.
ii. Born on April 18, 1945in an agriculture family in Paidipalem of Simhadripuram mandal in Kadapa district, Reddy completed his education in Kadapa (Andhra Pradesh ) and Bangalore (Karnataka).
iii. In December 1972, he enrolled himself as an advocate in the Kadapa district court. Then he became principal district and sessions judge (PDJ) and was uplifted to the status of judge in the AP High Court in May 2005.He was the vice-chairman of the Central Administrative Tribunal at Hyderabad from April 2007 – April 2010.
