MEITY launched 3 new schemes worth Rs 50,000 cr to boost electronic manufacturing in IndiaCentre launches schemes to boost electronic manufacturing

i.These schemes will contribute in achieving a USD 1 Trillion digital economy and a USD 5 Trillion GDP by 2025
The three schemes are:

  • Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing,
  • Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS) 
  • Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0) Scheme

About India’s Electronic Industry:
The electronics industry of India is one of the fastest growing sectors, expected to reach $400 billion by 2025.

  • It has grown from Rs. 1,90,366 crore in 2014 to Rs. 4,58,000 in 2018. 
  • The country’s share in global manufacturing also rose from 1.3% in 2012 to 3% in 2018. 
  • Between 2018 and 2019, exports grew by 38% year-on-year.

MoD places orders with OFB to supply 156 upgraded tanks worth of Rs 1,094 crore for ArmyGovt places indent for supply of 156 combat vehicles

The Acquisition Wing of Ministry of Defence (MoD) has ordered Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) in Telangana’s Medak, to supply 156 BMP 2/2k Infantry Combat Vehicles (ICVs) worth Rs 1,094 crore for the Indian army. There are plans to induct these advanced feature vehicles into the army by 2023.
i.These vehicles will be powered by 285 horsepower engines & can run at a speed of 65 km per hour even in cross country area.

i.The World Health Organization(WHO) has accorded the World No Tobacco Day Award 2020 to Socio-Economic and Educational Development Society(SEEDS), an Indian non-governmental organization(NGO).
ii.It is one among the 3 SouthEast Asian Region awardees, for its efforts to ban pan masala, gutkha, e-cigarettes and hookah in Bihar and Jharkhand. 
iii.Deepak Mishra, executive director of the SEEDS has been nominated by the ministry as a member of the task force on the de-addiction campaign.

i.The South African National Space Agency(SANSA) has partnered with National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) to host a deep-space ground station to support human spaceflight missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. 
ii.South Africa became the 4th country(4th site)after the United States of America, Spain and Australia to host a deep space ground station.
iii.This site will be integrated into an existing network of three sites, will complement the other sites & provide improved coverage and redundancy for critical mission support.

  • Astronomers at Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii’s discovered a rare space object.
  • The rare asteroid called 2019 LD2 with a comet-like-tail among the Jupiter Trojans, moving in the same orbit as Jupiter.

ATLAS is an asteroid impact early warning system being developed by the University of Hawaii and funded by NASA. It consists of two telescopes, 100 miles apart, which automatically scan the whole sky several times every night looking for moving objects.

Former Pakistan’s First-class cricketer Riaz Sheikh passed away at 51 due to COVID-19Ex-Pakistan first-class cricketer Riaz Sheikh dies

On 2nd June 2020, Former Pakistani first class cricketer Riaz Sheikh passed away at the age of 51 in Karachi, Pakistan after testing positive for the novel coronavirus. He became the second professional cricketer in Pakistan to die due to COVID-19. He was born on 24th December 1968 in Karachi, Sind, Pakistan.
Career:
i.Riaz Sheikh played 43 first-class and 25 List A matches in his domestic career from his debut in 1987 to 2005.
ii.He took 116 wickets in the first class matches and 30 wickets in List A matches.
iii.He played for the Teams like Karachi Whites, Karachi, Karachi Blues, Pakistan National Shipping Corporation, Public Works Department and Defence Housing Authority from 1986 to 2005.
iv.After his retirement from professional cricket he became the head coach in the Moin Khan Cricket Academy.

International Sex Workers Day 2020 – June 2International sex workers day

Every year June 2nd is celebrated as the International Sex Workers Day ensure that the sex workers enjoy the same rights as all the other human beings and tackle the abuse and trafficking problems.
Background:
More than 100 sex workers occupied the Saint-Nizier Church, Lyon, France On 2nd June 1975 to express their anger on being treated as criminals and their disgraceful living conditions with a banner saying “Our Children do not want their mothers to go to jail” broadcasted their campaign to the world through the media .The gathered were brutally raided by the police on June 10.
Recognition of Sex Workers and their rights:
i.The National Human Rights Institutions asked the governments to be accountable to protect the sex workers from the discrimination, harassment, abuse and violence by police and other government officials.
ii.The International Labour Organisations(ILO) and United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) emphasised the need for legal rights to occupational health and safety and right to participate in the developing workplace of safety and health.
iii.National AIDS Control Organization(NACO) takes necessary measures to provide support and equal rights to the sex workers and to protect the men and women who are forced to be sex workers.

On 29th May 2020 Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced on a Rs.1500 crore Kerala Fiber Optic Network(K-FON) project executed by the association of  Bharat Electronics Limited(BEL), RailTel Corporation(Public sector companies) andSRIT and LS Cables(Private sector companies) to provide free internet access for the poor by December 2020 and become the first state to declare the internet as a fundamental right of the citizen.
