In a first, Mumbai Metro to have vibration-absorbing tracks

For the first time in India, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd., MMRCL will lay vibration-absorbing tracks on the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro Line-3 with an estimated outlay of  Rs.23,000-cr.

  • The corporation has started trial production of the High Vibration Attenuation Booted Twin Sleeper Blocks,HVABTSB to lay tracks with the help of a machine from Sonneville AG, Switzerland.
  • It will have 27 underground stations en route and is expected to be operational in 2021.

i.On November 11, 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Office-cum-Residential Complex of Cuttack Bench of Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in Odisha to provide modern tax services.
ii.This bench will also provide services to Northeast and East India as it will help the Kolkata bench (West Bengal) in meeting the pending appeal.
iii.It should be noted that the Cuttack Bench of the ITAT was created and started functioning in 1970, and its jurisdiction extends to the whole of Odisha.

Home Ministry Notified New Rules under FCRA, 2010 by Amending FCRA Rules, 2011

i.On November 11, 2020, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has amended the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) Rules, 2011 by notifying new rules under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), 2010.
ii.Under clause (b) of sub-section (4) of section 12 of the Act, The NGOs (Non-Government Organizations) that intend to receive foreign funding must have existed for at least three years and spent Rs 15 lakh in voluntary activities to be eligible to receive money from abroad.

  • Port Trusts in Mumbai, Kolkata and others, the Inland Waterways Authority of India and the Shipping Corporation of India will also come under the ministry.

Stanford University, US releases List of Top 2% Scientists of the World; 1492 Indians feature in the list

14 scientists from IIT-BHU in world's top 2% scientists' list by Stanford University new

Stanford University, United States (US) has released a list of Top 2% Scientists of the world. The list has 1, 59, 683 persons and 1, 492 Indians have found a place in it. The scientists have been selected in the global list on the basis of their research paper’s International Evaluation.
i.Majority of Indians are from Premier Institutions like IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) and IISc (Indian Institute of Science). They represent fields like physics, material sciences, chemical engineering, plant biology, energy and others.
ii.The results have been published in PLOS Biology and have been classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields in the report.

India’s GDP Growth to Contract by 8.9% for CY 2020:Forecast by  Moody’s and Goldman Sachs

Moody's-revises-India's-CY20-GDP-growth-forecast-to--8.9%-from--9i.On November 12, 2020 As per Moody’s ‘Global Macro Outlook 2021-22: Nascent economic rebound takes hold globally but will remain fragile’, India’s GDP(Gross Domestic Product) for the Calendar Year(CY) 2020 is revised upwards to -8.9%(contract by 8.9) from -9.6% projected earlier.
ii.It also has revised the GDP for the CY 2021 upwards to 8.6% from 8.1% projected earlier.
iii.Goldman Sachs in its global economic analysis report titled ‘V(accine)-Shaped Recovery’, has projected India’s GDP growth to contract by 8.9% for CY 2020.
iv.It has reiterated its projections of India’s GDP growth for CY 2021 and CY 2022 to be 10%and 7.2% respectively.

CCI Approves Acquisition of 7.73% equity share capital of Jio Platforms by Google International LLC

On November 12, 2020, The Competition Commission of India (CCI) under Section 31(1) of the Competition Act, 2002 has approved the acquisition of 7.73% equity share capital of Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) by Google International Limited Liability Corporation-LLC (GIL).

  • JPL is a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited(RIL).
  • GIL is a  wholly owned subsidiary of Google LLC(collectively with all Google LLC subsidiaries, Google).

Key Info:
i.On July 15, Google signed a binding partnership and an investment agreement to buy 7.73% in Jio Platforms for Rs 33,737 crores.
ii.This means that Google will be making investment into Jio through its subsidiary GIL.
Note– Jio will get all the funds from its 13 investors(including google) who have injected Rs 1,52,056 crore for a 32.97% cumulative equity share.

Shripad Naik Launches Indian Navy’s 5th Scorpene-class Submarine ‘INS Vagir’ from Mazagon Dock

Indian Navy's submarine Vagir launched

On November 12, 2020, Minister of State (MoS) for Defence, Shripad Naik virtually launched the Indian Navy’s 5th Scorpene-class Submarine ‘INS Vagir’ in Arabian sea waters at Mazagon Dock, Mumbai. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDSL), Mumbai has built ‘Vagir’.
i.‘Vagir’ is part of six Kalvari-Class submarines being built in India.
ii.Designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS (The Naval Group, formerly known as Direction des Constructions Navales (DCNS)) and is being built as part of Indian Navy’s Project-75.
iii.It is capable of undertaking multifarious tasks which includes anti-surface as well as anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, and area surveillance.
iv.INS Kalvari, the first of the six Scorpene-class submarines, was launched in 2017, followed by Khanderi, Karanj and Vela.
INS Vagir:
i.It is named after a Sand Fish, which is a deadly deep sea predator of the Indian Ocean.
ii.The first Vagir, a submarine from Russia, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on December 3, 1973, and was decommissioned on June 7, 2001 after almost three decades of service to the nation.

Karnataka’s Mysuru to Get India’s First Sandalwood Museum

India’s first Sandalwood Museum is being established in Aranya Bhavan in Ashokapuram, Mysuru, Karnataka. The museum is set up by the Regional Forest Department to educate farmers about the significance of cultivation of sandalwood. This will also provide technical support, information on availability of saplings, marketing facilities, pest control measures, incentives and schemes provided for sandalwood growers by the government.
On 9th November 2020, ST Somashekar, Karnataka’s Minister in-charge of Mysuru district, inspected the museum, which will be inaugurated by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.
