The Plant has been set up by Baidyanath Ayurvedic Group.

  • Emphasizing the importance of alternate biofuels for diversification of agriculture towards the energy and power sector, Gadkari stated that India is spending 8 Lakh Crore for the import of petrol, diesel & petroleum products.
  • The Government has designed a policy which encourages development of cost effective pollution free and indigenous ethanol, bio CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), LNG and hydrogen fuels.
  • He stated that Surplus quantities of rice, corn and sugar must be used for production of alternative fuels.

Flex Engines
Nitin Gadkari highlighted the importance of ‘Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFVs)’. FFVs have engines which are capable of operating on more than one fuel and also a mixture. Typically, a blend of petrol and ethanol or methanol or gasoline is used.

ICCR to Set up a ‘Bangabandhu Chair’ at Delhi University

For the 1st time, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) has established the ‘Bangabandhu Chair’ at Delhi University to honour ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’, the father of Bangladesh and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Bangladesh Liberation War and Indo-Bangladesh diplomatic relations.

  • The Chair will be occupied by a foreign visiting professor or subject expert on Bangladesh preferably a person of that country’s origin.
  • Note – The Union government conferred Gandhi Peace Prize to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, for the year 2020 and the Government of Bangladesh has declared the year 2020-21 as the Mujib Year.

3rd G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting held in Venice, Italy; Nirmala Sitharaman attended virtuallyThird G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meetingi.The 3rd G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting (FMCBGs) was held on July 9-10, 2021 in Venice, Veneto (Italy) where India was virtually represented by Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance. This was the first in-person Finance Track meeting since February 2020.Italy hosted the Meeting.
ii.It was held as part of the G20 (Group of Twenty) Leaders Summit 2021, which will be hosted by Italy in October 2021.
iii.The discussions were held on a wide range of issues including global economic risks and health challenges, policies for recovery from the CoVID-19 pandemic, international taxation, sustainable finance and financial sector issues.

Nepal Signed USD1.3 billion Deal with India’s SJVNL to Develop 679 MW Lower Arun HEPNepal signs pact with SJVN for 679 MW Lower Arun Electric Hydel ProjectInvestment Board of Nepal (IBN) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the India’s State-owned hydropower major ‘Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd’ (SJVNL) for the implementation of 679 Megawatt (MW) Lower Arun Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in eastern Nepal at the cost of US$1.3 billion.

  • It is the 2nd project of SJVNL in Nepal after the Arun-3 hydropower project.

Key Points about ‘Lower Arun HEP’:
i.Location & Allocation: The project lies in Sankhuwasabha and Bhojpur Districts of Nepal, and it was obtained by SJVNL through International Competitive Bidding. It has been allocated to SJVNL for 25 years on ‘Build, Own, Operate, Transfer’ (BOOT) basis.
ii.Type: The project will develop only the tailrace of the 900 MW Arun-3 hydro project; it doesn’t include any reservoir or dam. It will contain 4 Francis-type turbines to generate 2,970 million units of electricity per annum.
iii.The project was scheduled to be completed in 4 years after the onset of construction activities.

IMF Board Approved US$650 Billion SDR Allocation Against COVID-19IMF approves $650 billion expansion to fight pandemicIn July 2021, the executive board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved the Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) allocation equivalent to USD 650 billion, to support the economically vulnerable member nations’ battle against COVID-19.

  • It is the largest allocation in the IMF’s history, it would boost the liquidity and reserves of all IMF member countries and promote the resilience and stability of the global economy.
  • The SDR allocation would be completed by the end of August 2021 and it would allow developing countries to immediately receive more than USD200 billion in support.
  • The IMF will channel the SDRs from wealthier members to poorer and more vulnerable member countries to help their COVID-19 recovery.
  • As per the record of Johns Hopkins University, deaths worldwide due to COVID-19 climbed to 4 million.

Note – Similar to the current expansion, in 2009 IMF approved a USD250 billion expansion in SDR reserves to recover from the 2008 global financial crisis.

RBI Approved Equitas SFB to Apply for Amalgamation of Promoter into itselfEquitas-SFB-gets-RBI-nod-to-seek-merger-of-promoter-into-itselfOn July 10, 2021, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved the Equitas Small Finance Bank (SFB) to apply for the amalgamation of its promoter ‘Equitas Holdings’ into itself. Equitas SFB is the subsidiary of Equitas Holdings.

  • As per the RBI’s SFB licensing guidelines, the promoter of SFB should exit or cease to be a promoter after a lock-in period of 5 years.
  • In the case of Equitas SFB, the initial promoter lock-in period for Equitas Holdings expires on September 4, 2021, hence the Equitas SFB requested RBI for amalgamation of its promoter before completion of the lock-in period.
  • Now RBI has approved the bank to apply for amalgamation of its promoter into itself.

Note – The promoter of SFB should also have a minimum of 40 percent of the paid-up voting equity capital of the bank.

Eligible Promoters to set up SFB:
i.Resident individuals/professionals (Indian citizens) having at least 10 years of experience in banking and finance at a senior level.
ii.Companies and Societies in the private sector, that are owned and controlled by residents and running their businesses for at least 5 years.
iii.Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFCs), Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs), and Local Area Banks (LABs) in the private sector, that are controlled by residents and running their businesses for at least 5 years.
iv.Joint ventures by different promoter groups for the purpose of setting up SFB were not permitted.

Exim Bank Lent $35.26 mn Loan to Kalpataru Power Transmission for Senegal ProjectExim-Bank-lends-$35The Export-Import (Exim) Bank of India has extended a USD 35.26 million loan for Mumbai based Kalpataru Power Transmission Ltd (KPTL) to execute a power transmission project in Senegal.
Key Points:
i.The Credit facility was extended under the National Export Insurance Account (NEIA) scheme. NEIA would provide financing options to Indian project exporters with the support of cover from NEIA Trust.
ii.The project would enable KPTL to secure energy supply in the southern regions of Senegal viz, Tambacounda, Ziguinchor, and Tanaff, reduce operating expenses, and the cost per kWh(kilowatt-hour).
iii.Earlier the bank provided a Credit facility of USD 200 million for KPTL under NEIA to support the construction of a 225kV transmission line for the Tambacounda – Kolda – Ziguinchor link in Senegal.

Ethiopia PM Abiy Ahmed ‘s Party Won the Country’s Parliamentary ElectionEthiopia-PM-Abiy's-party-wins-landslide-victory-in-electionEthiopia‘s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed‘s Prosperity Party won the country’s parliamentary election by winning 410 of 436 parliamentary seats.

  • The victory assures Abiy Ahmed a 2nd 5-year term as PM. He was appointed as the PM of Ethiopia by the governing coalition in 2018.
  • The election was held on June 21, 2021, it was that country’s first free and fair election after decades of repressive rule.
  • Voting did not take place in 3 of Ethiopia’s 10 regions due to opposition boycott, a war in Tigray, ethnic violence, etc.
  • The key opposition party of ‘Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice’, Birhanu Nega, lost the election.
  • In Tigray, the military has been battling forces loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), as the fighting has displaced two million people, the United Nations has warned of famine conditions in parts of the region.

Note –  He won the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his work in ending the 20-year post-war territorial stalemate between Ethiopia and Eritrea. He is the 1st Ethiopian and the first Oromo to awarded a Nobel Prize.

ISRO to Launch Earth observation satellite, GISAT-1 from SDSC, Sriharikota, APISRO-plans-to-launch-geo-imaging-satellite-on-August-12The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set to launch its Geo Imaging Satellite-1 (GISAT-1), weighing about 2,268-kg, onboard Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-F10 (GSLV-F10) rocket on August 12, 2021 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.

  • This will be the 14th flight of the GSLV.
  • Sriharikota is regarded as the Spaceport of India.

Points to be noted:
i.It is the first state-of-the-art agile Earth observation satellite which will be placed in a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit by GSLV-F10 and, subsequently, positioned in the final geostationary orbit, about 36,000 km above earth’s equator.
ii.For the first time, a 4 metre diameter Ogive shaped payload will be flown in this GSLV flight.
iii.It will be the second launch of 2021 following the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)-C51 mission on February 28, 2021. It was launched with Brazil’s earth observation satellite Amazonia-1 and 18 as co-passengers, including some built by students.
What will GISAT-1 do?
i.It will facilitate real- time observation of the Indian subcontinent, real-time images of India’s borders under cloud-free conditions, at frequent intervals.
ii.It will also enable quick monitoring of natural disasters, episodic, and any short-term events.
iii.It will also help in obtaining spectral signatures of agriculture, forestry, mineralogy, disaster warning, cloud properties, snow and glacier and oceanography.
Launch Background:
Originally it was to be launched from Sriharikota on March 5, 2020 but was postponed a day before due to technical reasons. Thereafter, the launch was delayed due to Covid-19- induced lockdown. Again, it was scheduled for March 28, 2021 but postponed after facing a minor issue.

Virgin Galactic’s Unity 22 Human Space Mission – Indian Origin Sirisha Bandla Joins the MissionVirgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo Unity 22 launchedUS based private Spaceflight company ‘Virgin Galactic’ announced the 6-member crew of its human commercial space mission “Unity 22”. The crew includes Richard Branson – the founder of Virgin Galactic as one of its passengers. Indian origin Sirisha Bandla will be the 4th crew member of the space mission.
Unit 22 Mission:
Objective – To act as a pre-run for all of its future commercial space trips, that will allow passengers to witness the curvature of Earth from space.

Padma Awardee, Dr PK Warrier Ayurveda Doyen Passed AwayDr PK Warrier, man who brought Ayurveda to masses, dies at 100Padma Awardee Dr Panniyampalli Krishnankutty Warrier (PK Warrier), a well-known ayurvedic physician who has contributed to popularising Ayurveda medicine has passed away in Kottakkal, Malappuram, Kerala. He was born on 5th June 1921 in Kottakkal, Malabar District, Madras Presidency, British India (now Malappuram, Kerala).
About Dr PK Warrier:
i.Dr PK Warrier was the chief physician and managing trustee of the Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala, a leading centre of ayurvedic medicine, converting traditional healing into modern, classical therapy.
ii.He has set a benchmark for the Indian traditional healing system and played a major role in the renaissance of Ayurveda.
iii.He started a nursing home and started Panchakarma and other special therapies of Kerala, this was a first-of-its-kind centre in the traditional healing system.
iv.He started a clinical research centre at the Vaidya Sala in 2018 to equip Ayurveda to tackle future healthcare challenges.
Awards:
The government of India has honoured him with the Padma Shri (1999) and Padma Bhushan (2010) for medicine.

VP Released a Book Titled “Kotha (Corona) Kathalu – 4”:
i.VP Venkaiah Naidu virtually released the book titled “Kotha (Corona) Kathalu – 4”, an anthology of 80 short stories on COVID-19 in Telugu by eminent authors from across the globe.
ii.The book is published by Vamsee Prachurana.
iii.The book is dedicated to the legendary singer Padma Vibhushan S P Balasubramaniam, who died due to COVID-19.

21st National Fish Farmers Day – 10th July 2021National Fish Farmers Day 2021The National Fish Farmers Day is annually observed across India on 10th July in memory of the Scientists – Dr K. H. Alikunhi and Dr Hiralal Chaudhuri – who successfully demonstrated the induced breeding in Indian Major Carps on 10th July 1957. 
The day also recognises the contribution and the efforts of fish farmers in producing the fish to meet the needs of the people.

  • India celebrated the 21st National Fish Farmers Day on 10th July 2021. 

The National Fisheries Development Board(NFDB), under the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying virtually celebrated the 21st National Fish Farmers’ Day. 

  • The day is also observed as the National Fisheries Development Board(NFDB) Foundation Day. 
  • 2021 marks the 15th NFDB foundation day.

i.In 2001, the Government of India declared that the 10th July of every year will be observed as the National Fish Farmers’ Day” starting from 2001.
ii.The first Fish Farmers’ Day on 10th July 2001 was celebrated by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) -Central Institute of Fisheries Education(CIFE), Mumbai, the leading institute of Fisheries Education institution in India

World Population Day 2021 – 11 Julyworld population day 2021United Nations(UN)’s World Population Day is annually observed across the globe on 11th July to create awareness about the urgency and importance of population issues such as the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health and human right, and their relations to the environment and development.
Background:

i.The World Population Day was first established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, following the observance of the Day of Five Billion on 11th July 1987, the day when the world’s population reached 5 billion.
ii.The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution in December 1990 and decided to continue the observance of the World Population day on 11th July.
iii.The first UN’s World Population Day was observed on 11th July 1990.
UP’s Population Policy 2021-2030:
i.On the occasion of the World Population Day 2021, Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister(CM) of Uttar Pradesh(UP) inaugurated the Population Policy 2021-2030 for Uttar Pradesh.
ii.Aim: To bring down the gross fertility rate among women to 2.1 by 2026 and to 1.9 by 2030.

Malala Day 2021 – 12th July Malala Day 2021Malala Day is annually observed across the globe on 12th July to mark the birthday of Malala Yousafzai, Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest-ever Nobel laureate.
Background:
i.In 2013, then UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon dubbed the 16th birthday of Malala Yousafzai as Malala Day to honour her contributions to ensure education for all.
ii.Supporting the Global Education First Initiative of the UN Secretary-General, the youth representatives from across the globe celebrated the 16th Birthday of Malala as Malala Day to show their support for universal education.

LG Manoj Sinha launched ‘mySrinagar’ Mobile App

The Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, launched ‘mySrinagar’ mobile app to cater the needs of residents and tourists by integrating all available e-services offered by various departments and tourism-related information in both offline and online modes.

  • He also e-inaugurated multiple projects of Srinagar Smart City including Variable Message Displays (VMDs) installed across the city, and dedicated the new surface car parking that has been built on a total area of 16,000 sq ft at Residency Road, to the public.

Key Points:
i.More than 40 services from various line departments including 20 Srinagar Municipal Services are being offered through the app. It also supports the GIS (geographic information system)-based grievance management.
ii.The app also has an emergency helpline service.
iii.The new initiatives are on a line of mission to make cities of J&K  as per the needs of citizens with the use of modern technology.
