World Portuguese Language Day is annually observed across the globe on 5th May to celebrate the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures.
The first World Portuguese Language Day was observed on 5th May 2020.
Background:
i.The 40th Session of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s General Conference held in 2019 proclaimed the 5th May of Every year as the “World Portuguese Language Day”.
ii.In 2009 the date 5th May was officially established as the World Portuguese language day by the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP), an intergovernmental organisation.
About Portuguese Language:
i.Portuguese is one of the languages in the world which is recognised as a “global language” which is spoken officially on 5 continents.
ii.Around 10 million people across the globe speak Portuguese.
iii.The United Nation estimates that by the end of the century, Portuguese will be one of the most spoken languages in Africa.
