In June 2026, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MoSDE) completed the 12 years of its Skill India journey, highlighting the growth of one of the world’s largest skilling ecosystems and its contribution to workforce development, entrepreneurship and employability across the country.
Skill Transformation
Integrated Framework: The Ministry has built a comprehensive skilling ecosystem that combines vocational education, industry-led training, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship, digital infrastructure, and global workforce mobility.
Global Scale: Skill India has grown into one of the world’s largest and most diverse skilling ecosystems through sustained reforms and partnerships.
Training Ecosystem
Infrastructure Growth: Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) increased from 9,776 (2014) to over 13,888, expanding access to skill development nationwide.

DoAFW Releases Second Advance Estimates of Horticulture 2025–26; Production Projected at 3777.76 LT
In June 2026, the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare(DoAFW) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoAFW) released the crop production report  Second Advance Estimates of Horticulture Crops for 2025-26, projecting total horticulture production at 3,777.76 lakh tonnes (LT) across 301.51 lakh hectares (ha).

  • The estimates, compiled from States, Union Territories (UTs), and government agencies, indicated a 1.90% rise in production and a 0.05% increase in area over 2024–25, with higher output expected in fruits, vegetables, flowers, and aromatic & medicinal crops.

About Horticulture 2025–26 Estimates: 
Fruits: Fruit production is estimated at 1,214.75 LT, registering an increase of 3.25%, led by higher output of banana, mango, papaya, apple, and guava.
Vegetables: Vegetable area is projected at 118.79 lakh ha (increase of 0.75%) and production at 2,210 LT (increase of 1.47%), with notable growth in potato (598.89 LT, increase of 2.25%), tomato (214.61 LT, increase of 4.19%), okra, peas, cauliflower, and bottle gourd.
Onion: Onion area is expected to rise to 20.14 lakh ha (increase of 2.31%), while production remains stable at 307.37 LT.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Inaugurated FM transmitter in Jaisalmer and announced AI Labs in Jaipur 
In June 2026, Union Minister  Ashwini Vaishnaw, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology(MeitY),  virtually inaugurated a 20 kiloWatt (kW) Akashvani Frequency Modulation (FM) Transmitter at Ramgarh in Jaisalmer during a programme held at  Akashvani Jaipur premises in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

  • Following the inauguration of a new FM transmitter, the total number of FM transmitters in Rajasthan has increased to 39.

Key Details:
20-kW FM Transmitter: The newly commissioned transmitter is expected to strengthen information dissemination and national integration in the border region, thereby providing residents with better access to news, educational content, public service information and others.

  • It is expected to provide radio coverage within an 80 kilometer (km) radius, covering nearly 20,000 square kilometers (sq. kms) of Jaisalmer district.

Key Announcements:  Later during his visit to  Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur (Rajasthan),  Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made some of the key announcements like:

  • Establishment of Advanced Quantum Lab at the institute; will focus on building indigenous capabilities in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), quantum computing simulation, and quantum sensing hardware components.
  • Establishment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Lab, aimed to provide advanced computing infrastructure and tools for research and innovation.
  • Inauguration of  Makers Lab, developed to provide students with experiential and hands-on training opportunities in both software and hardware technologies.

IN -SPACe Selected 03 Space Startups for Funding under TAF Scheme
In June 2026, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation (IN-SPACe), the commercial arm of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), selected 03 Indian space startups namely: Astrobase Space Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (Bengaluru, Karnataka), SataSure Analytics India Pvt. Ltd. (Bengaluru, Karnataka), and TM2SPACE Technologies Pvt. Ltd.(Hyderabad, Telangana) , as the 1st set of Indian Non-Governmental Entities (NGEs) for funding under its Technology Adoption Fund (TAF) scheme.

  • These startups were selected through a rigorous multi-stage evaluation process conducted by expert committee comprising members from ISRO, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Department of Science and Technology (DST) and others.

Key Role of Startups:
Astrobase Space Technologies: It is tasked to develop a high-thrust, reusable closed-cycle liquid rocket engine i.e. 800 (kN) for medium- to heavy-lift space launch vehicles.
SatSure Analytics India: This analytical startup will build a Large Earth Observation Model (LOM) named “Dhaarini”, designed to serve as India’s foundational Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform for remote-sensing applications.

  • The proposed model will generate actionable insights across agriculture, infrastructure and disaster management, based on diverse satellite and aerial datasets.

TM2SPACE Technologies: It is tasked to develop an indigenous AI-supported star tracker system, enabling high pointing accuracy for high-resolution imaging and communication missions.
Agreement with Gujarat Government: IN-SPACe announced the signing of agreement with the Gujarat government to develop Common Technical Facility (CTF) for space-tech sector in Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) Khoraj, Gujarat.

  • IN-SPACe will provide technical support as well as financial support of up to Rs 100 crore for the procurement of equipment required for the For the development of CTF.
  • And, the additional funding required to the construction, operation, and maintenance of both the facilities and space Manufacturing Park will be provided by the Gujarat government.

GoI, Assam, Nagaland Sign Tripartite MoU to Boost Oil and Gas Production
In June 2026, the Government of India (GoI) along with the governments of Assam and Nagaland, signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi, Delhi for facilitating mineral oil operations in the Assam–Nagaland boundary areas.
Key Details of Agreement:
Key People: The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA), Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas(MoPNG), Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister(CM) of Assam and Neiphiu Rio, CM of Nagaland.
Framework: The MoU establishes a coordinated operational framework to ensure safe and secure hydrocarbon operations, effective stakeholder coordination, support for exploration and production activities, and promotion of investment in the upstream petroleum sector.
Significance: The agreement aims to revive oil and gas production in Nagaland after a gap of 31 years, unlock the Northeast’s rich hydrocarbon resources, provide greater investment certainty, and generate employment opportunities in the region.

ICAR Launches ‘Oilseeds Kisaan Mitra’ to Provide 24×7 AI-Powered Advisory to Farmers 
In June 2026, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoAFW), highlighted the increasing adoption of ‘Oilseeds Kisaan Mitra’, India’s first nationwide WhatsApp-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) advisory platform for oilseed farmers.

  • The service was launched in February 2026 during the National Oilseeds Conference in New Delhi, Delhi.

About Oilseeds Kisaan Mitra:
Platform: It is a 24×7 AI-powered chatbot accessible through WhatsApp that delivers instant scientific advisory services related to oilseed cultivation.
Developer: The platform has been developed by the ICAR–Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (ICAR-IIOR), Hyderabad, Telangana.
Accessibility:  It enables farmers to receive expert guidance directly on their mobile phones without downloading any additional application.
Scope:  Supports multiple Indian languages and provides advisory services for major oilseed crops such as groundnut, mustard, sesame, sunflower, soybean, and niger.

NLCIL & CSIR-CECRI Sign MoU for REE Extraction from Mining Waste 
In June 2026, NLC India Limited (NLCIL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI), Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu(TN), to develop technologies for extracting Rare Earth Elements (REEs) and critical minerals from mining waste.

  • The MoU was signed at Neyveli, TN, by I.S. Jasper Rose, Executive Director(ED) (Mines & Land), NLCIL, and K. Ramesha, Director, CSIR-CECRI, in the presence of Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), NLC India Limited.

Key Details of MoU:
Objective: The partnership aims to develop technologies for extracting critical minerals and REE from mining waste, while promoting sustainable resource recovery and reducing import dependence.
Collaboration:  Both organisations will study overburden, tailings, and other secondary resources from NLCIL’s mines to assess the recovery potential of REEs and critical minerals.
Significance: The initiative will boost critical mineral research, develop extraction technologies, and strengthen India’s resource security under the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM).
Other MoA Signed: The CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), Public Works Department (PWD), Uttar Pradesh(UP), and School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi(Delhi), signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the implementation of the project titled ‘The Implementation of the Standard Framework for Paving and Greening of Urban Roads (UP State – National Capital Region (NCR) Region)’.

WEF’s 2026 Tech Pioneers Cohort: 9 Indian Companies Among 100 Early-Stage Startups 
In June 2026, the World Economic Forum (WEF) released its latest 2026 Technology Pioneers cohort, selecting 100 early-stage companies from 23 countries for reshaping industries and society through breakthrough innovations in Artificial Intelligence (AI), energy, quantum computing, biotechnology, climate innovation, space and advanced manufacturing.
2026 Technology Pioneers Cohort:
India’s Representation: This year’s technology cohort list featured a total of 9 Indian start-ups (compared to 10 startups in 2025 list.

  • With this, the total number of Indian firms to the WEF’s cohort has reached 28, including Agnikul Cosmos, Cropin, Digantara, among others.

Top 3 Countries: The United States of America (USA) with 43 startups, has the highest number of tech-startups on 2026 list; followed by China (10), the United Kingdom (UK) (8).
Engagement: The selected companies will contribute to WEF initiatives over a two-year engagement programme.

ECONOMY & BUSINESS

World Bank Raises India’s GDP Forecast to 6.6% for FY27
In June 2026, the World Bank (WB) released the Global Economic Prospects (GEP), June 2026, in which it raised the economic growth projection for India by 10 basis points (bps) to 6.6% for the Financial Year 2026-27 (FY27) compared to its 6.5% projection released in January 2026.
India related Forecast:
GDP: The WB has projected that India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth for FY28 is expected to accelerate to 7.2%.

  • India’s economy is projected to grow by 6.6% in FY27, moderating from an estimated 7.7% in FY26, before rebounding to 7.2% in FY28.
  • India’s economy recorded a growth rate of 7.1% in FY25.

Growth Leader: India is expected to remain among the fastest-growing major economies globally and to continue anchoring growth in South Asia.
Global Growth: Global growth is projected to slow to 2.5% in 2026, from 2.9% in 2025, the lowest rate since the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • In a worst-case scenario, global growth could fall to 1.3% in 2026.
  • Similarly, the global GDP growth is projected at 2.8% in 2027.

Elon Musk Becomes World’s First Trillionaire on Paper Following SpaceX’s Record-Breaking USD 75 Billion IPO 
In June 2026, Elon Musk, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX), became the world’s first trillionaire on paper after SpaceX raised a record USD 75 billion through its June 2026 Initial Public Offering (IPO), listed on Nasdaq Stock Exchange, New York, United States of America (USA).

  • The IPO surpassed the 2019 Saudi Aramco IPO to become the largest public offering in history, significantly boosting Musk’s paper net worth beyond the USD 1 trillion mark.

About SpaceX Trillion-Dollar Milestone:
Record Valuation:The company sold 555.6 million Class A shares at USD 135 each, valuing SpaceX at approximately USD 1.77 trillion and significantly boosting Musk’s net worth.
Wealth: Elon Musk’s SpaceX stake was valued at about USD 866.5 billion and, combined with Tesla holdings worth about USD 286.2 billion, raised his paper wealth to approximately USD 1.1 trillion, making him the first trillionaire on paper.
Control: He retained 84.4% voting power through approximately 849.5 million Class A shares and 5.57 billion Class B shares, while some stock awards remain contingent on long-term milestones such as a permanent Mars colony and large-scale space-based data-centre infrastructure.

GoI Nominates DFS Secretary Sanjay Lohiya as Director on RBI, SBI Central Boards 
In June 2026, the Government of India (GoI) nominated Sanjay Lohiya, Secretary of Department of Financial Services (DFS) under the Ministry of Finance (MoF), as a Non-Executive Director on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and State Bank of India (SBI). The nomination came into effect from 11 June 2026 and will remain valid until further orders.

  • Sanjay Lohiya succeeded M. Nagaraju as Secretary, DFS, on 1 June 2026 and subsequently replaced him on the RBI Central Board.

About Sanjay Lohiya:
Profile: Heis a 1994-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Assam-Meghalaya Cadre.
Previous Role: Prior to his appointment as DFS, he served as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Mines (MoM).
Other Key Roles: During his 30 year-long career in administration, he held several senior positions such as: Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister (CM) of Assam; Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoAFW); and Director in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

ACQUISITIONS & MERGERS

President Droupadi Murmu  Approves Merger of REC Ltd with PFC to Create Unified Power Financing Entity 
In June 2026, the President of India Droupadi Murmu, approved the merger of REC Limited (REC) into Power Finance Corporation Limited (PFC), nearly seven years after PFC acquired the Government of India(GoI) majority stake in REC. The approval was communicated by the Ministry of Power (MoP) through a letter.

  • The merger is aimed at creating a larger and more efficient public sector power financing institution, in line with the Government of India’s efforts to strengthen Public Sector Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs).

PFC–REC Merger
Background of Acquisition: In March 2019, state-owned PFC acquired the Government of India’s 52.63% stake in REC. The acquisition was completed for Rs 14,500 crore, making REC a subsidiary of PFC.
Merger Structure: REC will be merged into PFC under Sections 230–232 of the Companies Act, 2013, with all assets and liabilities transferred to PFC and REC ceasing to exist as a separate entity.
Budget Push: In the Union Budget 2026,  Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has also announced plans to restructure PFC and REC to achieve greater scale and efficiency among public-sector Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFCs).
About PFC: PFC established in 1986 and headquartered in New Delhi, Delhi operates under the MoP. It is headed by Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) Parminder Chopra.

Tata & Airbus Completed 1st Test Flight of Maiden ‘Made in India’ C295 Aircraft
In June 2026, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus SE successfully completed the first test flight of India’s maiden domestically manufactured Airbus C295 military transport aircraft from the Final Assembly Line in Vadodara, Gujarat, marking India’s first large-scale private-sector military aircraft programme.

  • It is a part of manufacturing project under the Rs.21,935-crore Ministry of Defence (MoD) contract to supply 56 C295 aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF), including 16 in fly-away condition from Spain and 40 aircraft to be assembled in India with deliveries scheduled from 2026 and completion by 2031.

About C295 India Programme:
Objective: The programme is aimed to replace the ageing Avro-748 fleet and gradually phasing out the Antonov An-32 fleet and strengthen indigenous aerospace manufacturing, support multiple military and humanitarian missions.
Partnership: The project is being executed by Airbus Defence & Space and TASL through the Tata Aircraft Complex Final Assembly Line (FAL) at Vadodara, Gujarat, inaugurated on 28 October 2024 by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi and Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez.

Former New Zealand Captain Kane Williamson Announced Retirement From International Cricket 
In June 2026, former captain of the New Zealand national cricket team, Kane Stuart Williamson, announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, ending a distinguished 16-year career spanning 378 matches and two International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup finals.

  • He finished as New Zealand’s all-time leading run-scorer with 19,346 international runs, 48 centuries and six double-centuries, and captained the Black Caps to their maiden ICC World Test Championship title in 2021.

About Kane Williamson:
Profile: He is a former New Zealand international cricketer, former captain, right-handed batsman, occasional off-spin bowler, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen, captains, and cricketers of his generation, having already retired from Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) in November 2026.

Padma Shri Jaspal Rana, former Asian Games gold medallist Passed Away 
In June 2026, Renowned Indian shooting coach, former Asian Games gold medallist and Padma Shri Jaspal Rana passed away at the age of 49 in New Delhi. He was Born in 1976 in Uttarakhand.

  • The Government of India (GoI) awarded the Padma Shri in the field of Sports to Jaspal Rana in 2002 for his contributions to Indian shooting.

About Jaspal Rana: 
Profile: Rana was a dominant force in international pistol shooting throughout the 1990s and 2000s, building one of the most decorated athletic resumes in the country
leaves behind a remarkable legacy spanning more than three decades.
Post-retirement Role:
Coach: Rana served as junior national coach in 2012 and later as India’s high-performance pistol coach in 2025 by National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), mentoring Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary.
Mentorship: He played a pivotal role in Bhaker’s success at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she won two bronze medals after a temporary fallout before the Tokyo Olympics. titles

Thailand’s Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, UN Goodwill Ambassador Passed Away
In June 2026, Thailand’s Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, a lawyer, diplomat, and the eldest child of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, passed away at the age of 47 at a hospital in Bangkok, Thailand.

  • Princess Bajrakitiyabha was widely recognized for her contributions to justice reform, women’s rights, and prison rehabilitation initiatives in Thailand and internationally.

About Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol
Royal Background: Her full royal name and title were Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati, popularly known as “Bha” or “Patty”, was the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand.
Education & Career: She studied law at Cornell University, served at Thailand’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, United States of America (USA) and later worked as attorney general in Udon Thani Province.
Diplomatic Role: She served as Thailand’s Ambassador to Austria (2012–14) and was appointed United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Goodwill Ambassador in 2017.
Key Contributions: She played a significant role in the adoption of the UN Bangkok Rules on the treatment of female prisoners and launched the “Kamlangjai” campaign for the rehabilitation and empowerment of imprisoned women in Thailand.

International Albinism Awareness Day 2026 – June 13
The United Nations (UN) observes International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) annually on 13 June to raise awareness about albinism and promote the rights, dignity, and inclusion of persons with albinism worldwide.

  • 2026 Theme: “Proudly in My Skin: Celebrating All Skin Tones.”

Background:  
Origin:  On 13 June 2013, the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) adopted its first resolution A/HRC/RES/23/13 on albinism to prevent attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism.
Proclamation: On 18 December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 13 June as IAAD through resolution  A/RES/69/170.
Advocacy:  Yusuf Mohamed Ismail Bari-Bari, Late Somalia’s Ambassador to the UN, played a key role in advancing the rights of persons with albinism in collaboration with Under The Same Sun (UTSS).
Observance:  The First IAAD was observed on 13 June 2015.
