INDIAN AFFAIRS
Under PMKSNY, more than 7 crore 32 lakh farmer families received first two instalments of Rs 2000 each
Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana (PMKSNY), more than 7 crores 32 lakh farmer families across India received the first and second installments of Rs 2000 each amounting to 14 thousand 646 crore rupees.
i. The list was topped by Uttar Pradesh with over two crores twenty lakh farmer families followed by Andhra Pradesh with 72 lakh and Maharastra 50 lakh farmers.
About PMKSNY:
It is an initiative by the Government of India in which small and marginal farmers with landholding up to 2 hectares will get up to Rs 6,000 per year as minimum income support. Rs 6,000 per year will be paid to each eligible farmer in three instalments and will be deposited directly to their bank accounts. It became effective from December 1, 2018. Budget allocation 2019-20- Rs. 75,000 crore.
UDAN scheme added 8 more air routes
The Civil Aviation ministry added 8 more routes under the regional connectivity scheme UDAN, thus making the total operational routes to 194.
i. The eight roots are as follows:
- Mysore-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Mysore, Goa-Mysore, Mysore-Goa , Cochin-Mysore , Mysore-Cochin , Kolkata-Shillong and Shillong-Kolkata.
ii. The flights connecting Kolkata and Shillong will be operated By Indigo whereas the other connectivity will be provided by Alliance air.

i. Totally 705 Routes have been awarded on the UDAN scheme till now by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
ii. India ranks as the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market.
UDAN
UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik) is a “Regional Connectivity Scheme”.
i. The main aim of the scheme is to provide air connectivity to every common man in the country ataffordable rates and also to provide connectivity to least served areas by flights.

Government bans Colistin- antibiotic used in poultry industry
The Union Health Ministry has banned colistin, which is an antibiotic used in the poultry industry for producing animals, aqua farming, etc.
i. It was banned as it has high risk of life threat to human beings. Key points
i. The ban has been imposed under section 26 of the drugs and cosmetics act 1940.
Colistin
i. Colistin is also known as polymyxin E.
ii. It is used to treat ventilator-associated pneumonia.
iii. It also has its side effects like slurred speech, dizziness, spinning sensation, itching mild rashes etc.
iv. Colistin is a crucial last-resort option as it is not frequently used in typical care because of its side effects
v. The World Health Organization(WHO) considers colistin as a ‘highest priority critically important antimicrobials’ for humans.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurates Ujh and Basantarbridges in Jammu and Kashmir
The Ujh and Basantar bridges were inaugurated by the defence minister in Kathua and Samba districts of Jammu and Kashmir.i. The bridges are considered highly important as they will help in the smooth movement of security forces in and around the border areas.
ii. The Ujh bridge in Kathua is built at a cost of ₹50 crore and the basantar bridge in Samba district is built at a cost of Rs.41.7 crore.

i. The bridges have been built on the project Sampark near the International border.
ii. The Ujh bridge in Kathua is the longest constructed by the Border Road Organization (BRO).
iii. The length of the Ujh Bridge is 1000 metre whereas the Basantar Bridge is 617.49 meter.

CRPF unveils country’s first body protector jointly developed by DRDO for women personnel in combat
On July 19, 2019, India’s largest Central Armed Police Force, CRPF( Central Reserve Police Force) unveiled the country’s first prototype of a body protector for women personnel. It has been jointly developed after over two years of research by CRPF and Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), which functions under the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation).
Key points:
i. The multi-design black coloured “gender-specific protective gear” weighs 6 kg cost around Rs 9000 would protect an individual from the neck to the toe with chest, hand, legs, shin and thigh guards.
ii. 8,000 women personnel in CRPF will be benefited by the protective gear & help them during riot-control duties and regulation of public protests.
CRPF also gets sanction to install sanitary pad dispensers for women in combat
The Union Home Ministry has sanctioned funds to the CRPF to install over 500 sanitary pad dispensers and incinerators for the combined women in the Force to help them in ensuring personal hygiene with ease.
Key points:
i. A total of 288 sanitary pad vending machines 783 steel frame stands for drying clothes and as many incinerators to scientifically dispose off used sanitary napkins will be installed in the CRPF campuses.
ii. The cost of one sanitary pad vending machine is estimated to be about Rs 25,000, a burning machine about Rs 40,000 and a cloth drying stand Rs 3,000 with an outlay of Rs 2,10,69,000.
iii. The CRPF with over 3 lakh personnel, has its women personnel deployed all over the country, including in Naxal violence-affected and the militancy grid in Jammu and Kashmir.

All toll lanes on National Highways to be ‘FASTag lanes’ from December 1, 2019
To encourage digital payments at toll plazas and decongest national highways, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has decided to declare all lanes at toll fee plaza on National Highways as ‘FASTag lanes’ from 1st December 2019.Key points:
i. Collection: To monitor over-dimensional or oversized vehicles, one ‘hybrid lane’ will be allowed at every toll plaza to accept FASTag and other modes of payment.
ii. NHF Rule,2008: Under the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, currently there is a provision of making a vehicle owner pay twice the toll fare. This rule will be strictly implemented if non-FASTag users are passing through FASTag lanes and make double the fee cash payments after December 1, 2019.
iii. NHAI’s function: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will identify & resolve Logistics and other implementation problems at fee plazas.
iv. FASTag: It is an electronic toll connection device attached to the windscreen of the vehicle to enable drivers to pass through toll plazas without having to stop for a cash transaction.
It uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to enable direct toll payments while the vehicle is moving. The toll fee is deducted from the bank account linked to FASTag.

10th Edition of Jagran Film Festival inaugurated in New Delhi

Maharashtra tops in ATM frauds: RBI
According to the data of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), accessed by the Times of India (TOI), Maharashtra registered the highest number of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) frauds in India for the FY 2018-19. It was followed by Delhi, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Amounts of less than Rs 1 lakh were not considered for the data.

Key Points:
i. There was an increase in ATM fraud cases up from 911 cases in 2017-18 to 980 in 2018-19.
ii. The amount involved was decreased from Rs 65.3 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 21.4 crore in 2018-19.
iii. With regard to ATM/Debit card, Credit card and Internet banking transactions of over Rs 1 lakh, there were 1,367 frauds reported in FY 2016-17; 2,127 frauds in FY 2017-18; and 1,477 frauds in FY 2018-19
iv. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura were the only three states which did not report a single incident.
v. The most commonly used trick by crooks to carry out illegal activities was by installing skimmer devices on ATMs and point-of-sale machines. They were used to fraudulently copy data from cards. This data was then put on blank cards and illegal transactions were carried out.
vi. As a cautionary measure, RBI has directed banks to implement anti-skimming solutions by March 31, 2019.

Andhra Pradesh became the first state in India to reserve 75% private jobs for locals
Andhra Pradesh Assembly under the Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy passed the Andhra Pradesh Employment of Local Candidates in Industries/Factories Act, 2019, which reserves 75% private job to locals across factories, industrial units, joint ventures and private projects taken under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Key Points:
i. Under the new law, private companies will have to train locals if people with suitable skills are not available.
ii. With this, it became the first state in India to reserve jobs for the locals in the private & industrial concerns.
iii. It will help the person who has lost their lands and their occupations for facilitating the establishment of industries and other unemployed youth by ensuring that their livelihoods are guaranteed and sustained.
iv. Only hazardous industries such as petroleum, pharmaceuticals, coal, fertilizers and cement among others which are listed in the first schedule of the Factories Act, 1948 are exempted.
v. Companies have to comply with the provisions within 3 years of commencement of the Act. Along with that, they will have to provide quarterly reports about local appointments to a nodal agency.

NAM Ministerial Meeting was held in Caracas, Venezuela
On July 20, 2019, The Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement (Co-BNAM) was held in Caracas, Venezuela with the theme “Promotion and Consolidation of Peace through Respect for International Law”. India was represented by Syed Akbaruddin, Indian envoy to the United Nations.
Key Points:
i. Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) condemned the United States (US) sanctions against Venezuela. It called for the construction of a multipolar world.
ii. It was agreed to set up a working group to study how sovereign countries deal with coercive measures by hegemonic countries.
iii. India strongly rejected Pakistan’s references to Kashmir saying the global forum can never be a platform for a “self-serving narrative” that aims to undermine the territorial integrity of one nation by another State.
iv. India raised issues like climate change, digital technologies, and terrorism at the meeting.
v. The presidency of NAM which was held by Venezuela since 2016 will be passed to Azerbaijan in October 2019.

Govt panel headed by SC Garg recommends banning all private cryptocurrencies & jail time of up to 10 years
On July 22, 2019, An Inter-Ministerial committee set up by the Government on virtual currency headed by finance secretary Subhash Chandra Garg submitted its report to the Finance Ministry.
i. It recommended that private cryptocurrencies be banned completely in India except for the one’s issue by the state.

It also drafted law, the ‘Banning of Cryptocurrency & Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill, 2019’ & recommended a fine of up to 250 million rupees ($3.63 million) and imprisonment for up to 10 years for anyone who mines, generates, holds, sells, transfers or issues cryptocurrency………………………………Click here to Read more
LIC offers Rs 1.25 trillion by 2024 to fund highway projects: Nitin Gadkari
On July 21,2019, Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways stated that Mumbai headquartered Indian state-owned insurance group, LIC (Life Insurance Corporation) has agreed to offer Rs 1.25 trillion (Rs 1.25 lakh crore) line of credit by 2024, to fund highway projects for timely execution of the Rs 8.41 trillion ambitious Bharatmala project. Key points:
i. The borrowings will be in the form of bonds to be issued by the NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) raised for 30 years and the interest rate will be revised every 10 years.
ii. Bharatmala program will be funded through cess, toll revenue, market borrowings, private sector participation, insurance fund, pension funds, masala bonds, and other initiatives and the LIC credit line was one such initiative(bonds).
iii. LIC offered Rs 25,000 crore in a year and Rs 1.25 trillion in five years for highways construction.
iv. The budget allocation for Road Transport and Highways ministry has also increased by about Rs 5,000 crore.

NPCI & JCB launched RuPay JCB Global Cards
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Japan Credit Bureau (JCB) International along with domestic banks, launched RuPay JCB Global Cards. It will be accepted in India at all Point Of Sale (POS) terminals and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) that accept JCB cards. Key Points:
i. The domestic banks include State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Axis Bank, Union Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Andhra Bank, City Union Bank and Thane Janata Sahakari Bank (TJSB).
ii. As a launch campaign, NPCI and JCB International jointly offered a special cashback program where the card members can get a cashback of 15% for POS transactions outside India and an additional 15% (total 30%) in selected popular destinations for Indian travellers: Thailand, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Boris Johnson won the contest to be next British Prime Minister
British politician & a Leader of the Conservative Party Boris de Pfeffel Johnson (55), who has promised to lead Britain out of the European Union (28-nation bloc) with or without a deal by the end of October 2019 won the contest to be the British prime minister( PM) succeeding Theresa May, who got stepped down over her failure to get parliament to ratify her Brexit deal. i. After a six-week leadership race, he won the votes of 92,153 members of the Conservative party, almost twice the 46,656 won by his rival, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

On July 20, 2019, The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointment of Ajay Bhadoo as the Joint Secretary to President Ram Nath Kovind for a tenure co-terminus with the President. He is a 1999 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Gujarat. He will succeed Randhir Kumar Jaiswal.Key Points:
i. He is serving as the Vadodara Municipal Commissioner since July 2018.
ii. He was the recipient of the Best Collector Award twice for outstanding performance in 2008 and 2010.
iii. Vivek Kohli elected as Commonwealth TT Federation chairman, while M P Singh as secretary-general
India’s Vivek Kohli and M P Singh have been elected as chairman and secretary-general respectively of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation (CTTF).
Key points:
i. Vivek Kohli defeated incumbent Alan Ransome (England) by securing 16 votes more than him in the elections held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
ii. While MP Singh (secretary-general at Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) was unanimously elected as secretary-general of CTTF.
iii. TTFI chief Dushyant Chautala is already held the CTTF president’s post.
iv. This is the first time all the three positions in CTTF are being held by Indians.

Ministry of home affairs approves Bhabha Kavach to be India’s 1st Lightest, Indigenous Bullet Proof Jacket
Bhabha Kavach called as “India’s lightest bulletproof jacket” was launched at the International Police Expo 2019 in New Delhi.i. The bulletproof jacket is developed by the Ordnance Factories Board (OFB) and metal alloys manufacturer Mishra Dhatu Nigam (MIDHANI) which is headquartered at Hyderabad.
ii. Each Bharat Kavach has four hard armour plates, to protect the wearer from the front, back and either side. The nanotechnology from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has been used in the making of Bullet Proof Jacket.
Key points
i. The bullet proof jacket blocks bullets from an AK-47 assault rifle and from 5.46mm INSAS rifle
ii. It weighs 9.2kg, which is 300 gm less than the weight of bulletproof jacket prescribed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
iii. It has a warranty for a period of 5years.
iv. OFB announced that the trial of the Bhabha Kavach met the US National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Level III standards, which guarantees protection against 7.62mm NATO- standard bullets.

Union minister launches Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) facility at CCMB in Hyderabad
The Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan in Hyderabad launched NGS facility at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), which will be used for genomics study.i. The Next-Gen Sequencing facility can sequence up to 30 human genomes(or 384 samples) per day which will help researchers to individually tag genomes of up to 80000 cells.
ii. This process of tagging genomes could be done in 8 minutes.
Key points:
i. The running cost of NGS facility sequencer is Rs.30 lakh (Rs.1 lakh to sequence per genome)
ii. This NGS facility will help to study completely different DNA contained in a cancerous tissue within a shorter span of time
iii. This facility would be of help to patients suffering from rare genetic disorders.
Foundation stones laid by Health ministry
i. Health minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan laid the foundation stone for a new Skilling, Training and Lecture hall complex at CCMB.
ii. He also laid foundation stone for the ‘scale up facility for agrochemicals’ proposed to be constructed as part of Agro mission project under CSIR.
Scientists Build Ramanujan Machine in honor of the Indian maths genius.
Researchers from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology have created an algorithm rather than a machine called Ramanujan Machine to honor the prominent and path-breaking mathematician of the 20th century, Srinivasa Ramanujan.
Key points:
i. The Machine attempts to automatically generate conjectures in the form of mathematical formulas that we can analyze, and hopefully, prove to be true mathematically.
ii. Conjectures are a major step in the process of making new discoveries in any branch of science, particularly mathematics.
iii. Typically, people provide the input and the algorithm finds the solution. The Ramanujan Machine reverses the process. So if a constant such as π is fed into the machine, it will generate a series whose value would lead towards π (pi).
iv. Ramanujan was born in 1887 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu & known for his unique and novel way of presenting equations and identities. He independently compiled almost 3,900 identities and equations.

The 21st Edition of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships for the year 2019 was held from July 17-22, 2019 at the JawaharLal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Cuttack, Odisha. About Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships:
The Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships was born at a meeting of Commonwealth delegates in Munich at the 1969 World Championships. Prior to inclusion in the Commonwealth Games proper in 2002, 15 Commonwealth Championships have taken place since 1971.
Nigeria set to host 2020 FIFA women U-20 World cup
Federation of International Football Federation has awarded FIFA under 20 Women World Cup 2020 (10th edition) hosting right to Nigeria after 10 years. Key points:
i. India and South Korea submitted their bids for the 2020 U20 Women’s World Cup but India named as the 2020 U17 Women’s World Cup host.
ii. The last FIFA event held in Nigeria was the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which was won by Switzerland.
About FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup:
It is an international association football tournament, organized by FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association), for national teams of women under the age of 20. The tournament is held in even-numbered years. It was first conducted in 2002 in Canada.
France hosted the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup (9th edition), where Japan emerged as a champion.

Shiva Thapa wins first gold for India in Kazakhstan President’s Cup 2019
On July 20, 2019, India boxer Shiva Thapa, a four-time Asian medallist, became India’s first gold medallist at the Kazakhstan President’s Cup Boxing Tournament 2019 by defeating Kazakhstan’s Zakir Safiullin in the finals held in Astana, Kazakhstan in the 63kg category. Key Points:
i. In Women’s 60kg category, Indian boxer Parveen settled with silver by losing against Kazakhstan’s Rimma Volosenko.
ii. Sweety Boora (81kg) and Duryodhan Singh Negi (69kg) settled with bronze medals.

Adam Peaty becomes a 1st man to swim under 57 sec in the 100m breaststroke
British competitive swimmer, Adam George Peaty(24) has broken his own world record in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke at the FINA (International Swimming Federation) World Aquatics Championships 2019 held in Gwangju, South Korea.Key points:
i. The 2016 Olympic champion won World Championships semi-final with 56.88sec becomes a 1st man to swim under 57 sec shattered the previous record of 57.10 sec he set at 2018 European Championships.
ii. In the final, he finished in 57.14sec beat compatriot James Wilby(UK), with China’s Yan Zibei in third.
iii. He now a five-time world, 12-time European and three-time Commonwealth champion.
Shane Lowry of Ireland wins British Open 2019
Shane Lowry of Ireland won his maiden golf title at the British Open 2019 by beating England’s Tommy Fleetwood by six strokes. It was the 148th Open Championship held from July 18–21, 2019 at Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The prize money of the tournament was $10,750,000.
i. Shane Lowry, aged 32, became the second player from the Republic of Ireland to win the Claret Jug after Padraig Harrington. He received $1,935,000.
John Isner of America wins Hall of Fame Tennis Championships 2019
John Isner of America won the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships 2019 in the finals after defeating Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan with a 7-6(2), 6-3 scores. The tournament was the 44th edition which was held at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, United States, from July 15 – 21, 2019.Key Points:
i. John Isner became the first player to win four titles. He won 250 ATP Rankings points and $100,600 as a winner of the event.
ii. Doubles was won by Spain’s Marcel Granollers and Ukrain’s Sergiy Stakhovsky by defeating El Salvador’s Marcelo Arévalo and Mexico’s Miguel Ángel Reyes-Varela in the final by 6–7, 6–4, [13–11].

OBITUARY
LJP MP Ramchandra Paswan passed away in New Delhi
On July 21, 2019, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Member of Parliament from Bihar’s Samastipur Ramchandra Paswan, aged 57, passed away at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, New Delhi after a brief illness. He was the younger brother of Union minister and LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan.
i. He was first elected in 1999 and was a four-time MP.
ii. He was born on January 1, 1962 in Khagaria, Bihar.

The U.S. celebrates the 50-year anniversary of ‘Apollo 11’ human moon landing mission on July 16, 2019
On July 16, 2019, The U.S.(United States) celebrated Apollo 11 human moon landing mission. Thousands of model rockets have been launched in Huntsville, Alabama to mark the 50th anniversary.US space agency NASA(National Aeronautics and Space Administration ) celebrated the moment astronauts landed on the moon for the first time 50 years ago, replaying online the original moon landing broadcast from July 20, 1969.Key points:
i. NASA’s Apollo 11 was launched at Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex-39A on July 16, 1969.
ii. It carried three astronauts Commander Neil Armstrong, Lunar Module Pilot, Edwin Buzz Aldri, and Command Module Pilot, Michael Collins. Out of three, the two astronauts, Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, while Michael Collins stayed in the orbit 60 miles above them in the command module.
iii. Neil Armstrong became the first person to step onto the surface of the moon followed by Aldrin, who joined him 19 minutes later.
iv. They collected 47.5 pounds (21.5 kg) of lunar material to bring back to Earth.
