PFRDA Issues Operational Guidelines for NPS Swasthya, Health Insurance Scheme
In September 2026, the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) in exercise of the powers under Section 14 of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA Act, 2013) issued operational guidelines for, NPS Swasthya Pension Scheme, a new health-linked pension scheme designed to combine retirement savings with access to healthcare benefits, under the National Pension System (NPS) 2026.

• As per the PFRDA official notification, these guidelines for NPS Swasthya Scheme came into force with immediate effect.

Key Features of NPS Swasthya:
Coverage: The scheme will cover the subscriber, spouse and maximum two dependent children under a family floater, excluding parents.

• Also, the entry age allowed for the scheme ranges from 18 to 70 years, while renewal can continue maximum at age of 85 years, subject to policy terms and applicable law.

Key Components: As per the guidelines, the scheme will have two different components: an NPS Swasthya Investment Account and a Super Top-up
Minimum Initial Contributions: The minimum initial contributions is linked to the 1st-year insurance premium, including Rs 200 towards annual maintenance charges for the Health Benefit Administrator (HBA), plus applicable taxes, and minimum Rs 1,000 towards investment in the NPS Swasthya account. The minimum subsequent contribution is Rs 10.
Annual Aggregate Deductibles: The scheme provides  four annual aggregate deductible and corresponding family-floater sum-insured combinations such as: Rs 1 lakh insurance cover (Rs 10,000 annual aggregate deductible); Rs 5 lakh (Rs 50,000 annual aggregate deductible); Rs 10 lakh (Rs 1 lakh annual deductible); Rs 30 lakh cover (Rs 3 lakh annual deductible).

NSC Approves Kurukshetra ITI Cluster for Rs.320 Crore Under PM-SETU
In September 2026, National Steering Committee (NSC) under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has approved a Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) worth Rs.320 crore for the ‘Kurukshetra ITI Cluster’ in Haryana under the Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU) Scheme.

• With this approval, the cumulative investment under PM-SETU has reached Rs 2,491 crore across 10 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) clusters.

About Kurukshetra ITI Cluster: 
Overview: Developed under the PM-SETU Hub-and-Spoke model, Kurukshetra ITI Cluster integrates 7 Government ITIs to create a skilling ecosystem aligned with evolving workforce requirements.
Collaboration: As the Anchor Industry Partner, Jindal Naveen Avsar Limited will collaborate with the Government of Haryana and participating ITIs to strengthen industry linkages, provide practical training, support apprenticeships, and enhance student employment opportunities.
Other Association: Jindal Naveen Avsar Limited also associated with the Barbil ITI Cluster in Odisha, where a Rs 240 crore SIP has been approved under PM-SETU.

ICAI Issues ‘SSA 5000’ to Align Sustainability Assurance with Global Standards 
In September 2026, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) issued ‘Standard on Sustainability Assurance (SSA) 5000 – General Requirements & Framework for Sustainability Assurance Engagements’ to align India’s sustainability assurance practices with global standards and strengthen confidence in sustainability disclosures.
About Sustainability Assurance:
SSA 5000:  The SSA 5000 provides a principle-based framework covering climate, labour practices and biodiversity, aligned with the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB)’s International Standard on Sustainability Assurance (ISSA) 5000.
Indian Carve-outs:  Indian carve-outs cover joint audits and forward-looking statements; SSA 5000 applies from April 1, 2027. 
Existing Standards: Standard on Sustainability Assurance Engagements (SSAE) 3000 and Standard on Assurance Engagements (SAE) 3410 will be withdrawn from April 2027.
Alignment: It aligns India’s sustainability assurance framework with the International Standard on Sustainability Assurance (ISSA) 5000 issued by the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB), with certain India-specific modifications.
Impact: The framework promotes consistent sustainability assurance, strengthens stakeholder confidence and helps address greenwashing.

DRDO Inks Pact with Zero mK India to Indigenously Develop 20 mK Dilution Refrigerator for Quantum Computing
In September 2026, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) signed its first high-value deep tech project agreement under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) Scheme with Zero mK India Private Limited, for indigenous development of a 20 mK (millikelvin) Dilution Refrigerator for quantum applications,  in New Delhi, Delhi.

• It is the first high-value initiative under the Rs. 500 crore corpus approved by Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD), aimed at advancing cutting-edge technologies.

About DRDO–TDF Deep Tech Project:
Dilution Refrigerator: It is a specialised cryogenic system capable of achieving extremely low temperatures in the mK range, with a 20 mK level corresponding to around 0.02 Kelvin, near absolute zero.
Governance: The project will be monitored and mentored by Dr Meena Mishra, Director of Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL) and her team.
Significance: The indigenous 20 mK dilution refrigerator supports the National Quantum Mission (NQM) by strengthening India’s capabilities in quantum technology and advanced cryogenics, while reducing dependence on imported cryogenic infrastructure.
TDF Scheme: The Scheme, approved in September 2016 under the Make in India initiative, is a flagship programme of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) implemented by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

IIEST Shibpur and TCS Launch State-of-the-Art Centre of Excellence in AI 
In September 2026, the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, West Bengal(WB) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) on its campus.
About AI Centre of Excellence:
Venue: The High-Performance Computing (HPC) Lab of IIEST Shibpur’s Electrical Engineering Department will serve as the physical venue, with TCS as the Knowledge Partner.
Aim: The CoE will bridge academia and industry, develop a future-ready workforce, promote applied research and strengthen India’s AI ecosystem, aligned with Digital India and Viksit Bharat 2047.
Key Focus Areas: The CoE will advance AI skills, research and industry solutions in Natural Language Processing (NLP), Computer Vision, Image Processing and Data Analytics, while supporting internships, innovation and AI startups.
About TCS: Established in 1968, headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra,  and headed by K. Krithivasan, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD).

OAG Megahubs 2026: Delhi Airport Rises to 28th in Global Connectivity Ranking 
In September 2026, the Official Airline Guide (OAG),global aviation data provider,  released the latest edition of its “OAG Megahubs 2026 report”. As per the report, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) jumped 11 places i.e. from 39th spot (2025) to 28th spot (in 2026), featuring among the world’s top 50 most-connected internal airports.

• Turkiye’s Istanbul Airport (IST) with connections to 337 global destinations, emerged as the world’s most connected international airport; followed by London Heathrow Airport (LHR) of the United Kingdom (UK); and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) of the Netherlands secured 2nd and 3rd position respectively.

About OAG Megahubs Report:
Evaluation: The rankings measure airport connectivity by comparing the number of possible scheduled connections between international flights with the number of destinations served by an airport.
Coverage: OAG analysed the 100 largest airports globally and 100 largest international airports, based on scheduled seats during the 12 months to August 2026.

• The international connectivity ranking was based on flight data for 2 August 2026, the busiest day for global aviation during the period

Key Findings:
Asian Region Dominance: Asia-Pacific region with 8 airports continues to dominate the world’s top 20 Megahubs; followed by EMEA (6); North America (5); and Latin America (1).
Low-cost Mega hubs: Kuala Lumpur  Airport (KUL) of Malaysia with almost 15,000 possible low-cost connections across 154 destinations,  topped the Low-Cost Megahubs index; followed by Incheon (ICN) of South Korea and Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen of Turkiye ranked at 2nd and 3rd spots, respectively.
Megahubs by Region: Separately, the report provides 10 regional megahubs for Asia-Pacific, North America, Latin America, Middle-East and Africa (EMEA), and Europe.

• 8 of the the top 10 Asia-Pacific Megahubs featured among the world’s top 25 rankings, including two Chinese airports: Shanghai (PVG) and Baiyun International (CAN).

IEA Report: India’s Electrification Rate Could Rise from 19% to 32% by 2035
In September 2026, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released its Electrification Special Report 2026, projecting India’s electrification rate to rise from 19% to 32% by 2035, driven by transport electrification, Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption, and policy initiatives, with potential 30% savings in energy import bills.
About IEA Electrification Report
Report Development: The report was prepared at the request of Türkiye and Australia under the strategic partnership between the International Energy Agency (IEA) and 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)(COP31).
Projection: Southeast Asia may increase from 25% to 37%, indicating regional clean energy transition trends.
Energy Savings: Accelerated electrification could reduce global energy import bills by over USD 400 billion by 2035, with India saving nearly 30% of its 2025 energy import expenditure.

RBI Issues Directions To Alter Valuation Norms For REITs and InvITs
In September 2026, the Reserve Bank of India(RBI) issued directions to alter the valuation norms for units of Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs) and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) held by All-India Financial Institutions(AIFIs). The revised directions were issued on 22 September 2026 and came into effect immediately
About REITs and InvITs Norms:
Applicable to: The directions apply to Commercial Banks, All India Financial Institutions (AIFIs), Small Finance Banks (SFBs), Payment Banks (PBs), Local Area Banks (LABs).
Purpose: The amendments were intended to remove ambiguity and ensure uniform valuation practices for InvIT and REIT units across institutions.
Others: India REIT market hits USD 17.7 billion (Bn), overtakes Hong Kong to become Asia’s 4th largest.

• The RBI special US dollar-rupee forex swap facility attracted USD 143.596 billion (Bn) in foreign currency inflows by September 18, 2026.

Samvriddhi Inclusive Secured RBI’s In-Principle Approval to Operate as PA-Online
In September 2026, Samvriddhi Inclusive Growth Network Pvt. Limited (SIGN), subsidiary of MOS Utility Limited, secured in-principle authorization from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate as an Online Payment Aggregator (PA-Online).

• The approval marks SIGN’s expansion from assisted banking and financial inclusion services into the online digital payments ecosystem.

Key Details:
Payment Services: Following the final authorisation from the RBI, SIGN will be able to offer online payment aggregation services for merchants, with focus on small businesses operating in rural, semi-urban and underserved markets.
Payment Modes: The proposed platform will support Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Quick Response (QR)-based payments, credit cards, debit cards and net banking, along with digital collections and payment links.
Dedicated Business: The PA-Online business will operate as a separate digital offering alongside SIGN’s existing Customer Service Point (CSP)-led assisted banking and financial inclusion operations.

PayGlocal Secured IFSCA In-Principle Approval to Set Up PSP In GIFT City 
In September 2026, PayGlocal, a cross-border payments company, secured in-principle approval from the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) to set up a Payment Service Provider (PSP) in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
Key Details:
Significance: The approval will enable the fintech company’s proposed entity to undertake account issuance, including e-money accounts, cross-border money transfers and merchant acquisition.
Cross-Border Expansion: PayGlocal plans to initially support Indian merchants serving customers globally and subsequently expand its cross-border collection, payment and money-movement capabilities to businesses in other markets.
Other Regulatory Approvals: PayGlocal has already received final authorisation from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate as a Payment Aggregator-Cross Border (PA-CB) for both inward and outward transactions. It has also registered as a Money Services Business (MSB) with the United States of America(USA) Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).
About PayGlocal: Founded in 2021, PayGlocal serves merchants across export, retail, travel, education and Software as a Service (SaaS) and supports payments in more than 130 countries, with its headquarters in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

SBI Card Launches Fixed Deposit-Backed Secured Credit Cards ‘ Advantage SBI Card’ on YONO App
In September 2026, SBI Cards and Payment Services Limited (SBI Card) launched a fully digital facility on State Bank of India’s (SBI) YONO (You Only Need One) platform, enabling eligible customers to apply for the ‘Advantage SBI Card’, a Fixed Deposit (FD)-backed secured credit card, in around 10 minutes.

• This facility was inaugurated by Challa Sreenivasulu Setty, Chairman, State Bank of India (SBI), in the presence of Ashwini Kumar Tewari, Managing Director (MD), SBI, and Salila Pande, MD & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), SBI Card.

About FD-Backed Secured Credit Cards:  
Card Variants: The facility covers 4 cards: SBI Card ELITE, SBI Card PRIME, SimplyCLICK SBI Card and SimplySAVE SBI Card; the FD acts as collateral to support credit access and build a credit profile.
Credit Access: The FD acts as collateral for the credit facility, providing an additional route to formal credit for customers seeking to establish or strengthen their credit profile.
Integration: The initiative combines SBI Card’s credit-card portfolio, SBI’s customer reach and YONO’s digital capabilities to provide a seamless application experience.
SBI Card: Established in 1998 as a joint venture (JV) between SBI and GE Capital, SBI Card is headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana, and is headed by Salila Pande, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO).

ECONOMY & BUSINESS

ADB Raises India’s GDP Growth Forecast to 7% for FY27
In September 2026, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) released the ‘Asian Development Outlook (ADO) September 2026: Navigating Prolonged Energy Shocks and El Niño’, raising India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast by 40 basis points (bps) to 7% for Financial Year 2026-27 (FY27), from its previous estimate of 6.6%.

• : ADB attributed the upgrade mainly to stronger-than-expected Q1 FY27 (First Quarter: April–June 2026) performance, supported by robust investment, resilient consumption, and solid manufacturing and services growth despite the ongoing West Asia crisis.

Key Projections:
FY28: In addition, ADB’s latest outlook  projected India’s GDP growth at 7.1%, marginally  lower than its previous forecast of 7.3%, mainly due to the stronger base created by the higher growth expected in FY27.
Inflation: The outlook projected India’s inflation at 5.0% for FY27, lower than its previous forecast of 5.2%.However, it has retained its inflation projection for FY28 i.e. at 4%.
Developing Asia-Pacific Growth: The outlook projected the growth rate of Developing Asia and the Pacific (DAP) at 5.0% in Calendar Year 2026 (CY26), 10 bps higher than its July projection, but lower from 5.5% recorded in previous year. For CY27, it has retained its previous growth projection for the region  i.e. at 5.1%.

• The outlook has revised down its inflation forecast for the region i.e. from 4.3% to 4.2% for CY26, but raised to 3.5% for CY27.

Mizoram Farmer ZT Lalrithangi to Receive FAO Award
In September 2026, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) has selected Z T Lalrithangi, popularly known as Pi Mari-i, a 35-year-old teacher-turned-farmer from Sangau village, Lawngtlai district, Mizoram, for the ‘FAO 100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems and Rural Development’.

• The recognition was conferred under the International Year of Women Farmers 2026 for her contribution through strawberry cultivation, making her the first Mizo person to receive this international honour. 

Highlights of the Award Recognition:
Recognition: Lalrithangi was selected among 100 women globally from more than 600 nominations across 131 countries, including 2 women from India, under the FAO initiative.
Ceremony: She will receive the recognition during the World Food Forum at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, scheduled from October 12–16, 2026.
State Recognition: Before receiving the international recognition, Lalrithangi was selected as the Best Farmer of Lawngtlai district at the Mizoram Horti Fair 2026.

ISRO-ESA Extended Partnership till 2032 to Strengthen Space Collaboration
In September 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the European Space Agency (ESA) extended their long-standing Cooperative Agreement for 5 years until January 8, 2032, through an exchange of letters signed in Paris, France, during the International Space Summit.

• The extended agreement broadens cooperation to human and robotic exploration, space weather and sustainable outer space activities.

Highlights of ISRO-ESA Space Cooperation Agreement: 
Signatories: The agreement was signed/exchanged by Dr. V. Narayanan, Chairman, ISRO, and Dr. Josef Aschbacher, Director General, ESA.
New Areas: The renewed agreement expands cooperation to human and robotic exploration, space weather and sustainable outer space activities, while continuing existing collaboration.
Framework:  The cooperative agreement, in force since January 2002, establishes the foundation for collaboration between ESA and the ISRO across diverse space activities.
Expansion: Both agencies have strengthened ties through a Joint Statement of Intent on human exploration in 2025, followed by a March 2026 agreement covering joint calibration, validation, and scientific studies for Earth observation missions, alongside ongoing cooperation in Earth observation, satellite navigation, space science, and mission operations support.
About ISRO: Established in 1969, Headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and is led by current Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan.

ENVIRONMENT

New Plant Species ‘Begonia neelamorum’ Discovered from AR
In September 2026, a new flowering plant species, Begonia neelamorum, was formally discovered from Keyi Panyor district, Arunachal Pradesh (AR), covering around 3 square kilometer (sq km) and raising the number of Begonia species in Northeast India to 54 out of nearly 2,200 globally accepted species.

• The findings were published in Taiwania, an internationally peer-reviewed journal.

About the new species discovered:
Discovery: Begonia neelamorum was found along the Keyi River at around 1,000 metres elevation, with the type specimen collected on May 24, 2026.
Researchers: The species was documented by Dipankar Borah, Madhusudhan Khanal, Momang Taram and Neelam Gap.
Features: The 10–20 centimeter (cm) tall, tuberous plant has a single sessile, light-green leaf, double-serrated margins, glandular hairs and white male and female flowers; it resembles Begonia prolifera.
Conservation: Named after the Neelam clan of the Nyishi community, the species is locally called Kobiirhopu Baabrai and is provisionally classified as Data Deficient (DD) under International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria.

On September 24 2026, Vice-President (VP) C. P. Radhakrishnan released the book titled “Vishwasanchar Hindutva Ka”, published by Saptahik Vivek at Uprashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi.

Commemoration: The book release coincides with the centenary year of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), founded in 1925 by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

World Rhino Day 2026- September 22
World Rhino Day is observed globally every year on 22 September each year to raise awareness about rhinos and the need to conserve them.
Background:
Origin: World Rhino Day began as a Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) South Africa initiative in 2010. Conservationists Lisa Jane Campbell of Zimbabwe and Rhishja Cota-Larson of the United States helped develop it into an international observance.
First Observance: World Rhino Day was first celebrated internationally on 22 September 2011.

World Rose Day 2026 – September 22
World Rose Day(WRD) or Day for the Welfare of Cancer Patients is observed annually across the world on September 22 to honor cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers, symbolizing hope and compassion while raising awareness of their needs. 
Background:
Origin: World Rose Day is observed in memory of Melinda Rose, a 12-year-old Canadian girl diagnosed with a rare blood cancer.
Inspiration: Despite her illness, she inspired others through her writings and positive outlook. She died in 1996.
Cancer Burden: 
Global: The latest global estimates show 20.6 million new cases and 9.8 million deaths in 2024. Lung cancer was the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer deaths.

• Annual new cases are projected to reach 34.4 million by 2050.

India: In India, estimated cases rose from 14.97 lakh in 2023 to a projected 15.70 lakh in 2025, led by Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal(WB).

National Ayurveda Day 2026 – September 23
National Ayurveda Day is observed annually across India on 23 September to promote awareness about the significance of Ayurveda in the prevention and treatment of various health conditions.

• 2026 Theme: “Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow”

Background: 
Declaration: In 2016, the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) declared Dhanvantari Jayanti as National Ayurveda Day to promote its integration into mainstream healthcare.
First Observance: The first National Ayurveda Day was celebrated on 28 October 2016.
Date Change: Earlier observed on Dhanteras with a variable lunar date, the Government of India (GoI) fixed 23 September as the permanent date in May 2025, aligning with the autumnal equinox.
2026 Event:  The Ministry of AYUSH celebrated the 11th Ayurveda Day on 23 September 2026, organising national celebrations in Nagpur, Maharashtra, promoting Ayurveda’s integration into modern healthcare.

U.P. CM Yogi Adityanath Launches ‘Bharat Taxi’ and ‘Mukhyamantri Krishak Samriddhi Yojana‘
In September 2026, Uttar Pradesh (UP) Chief Minister (CM) Yogi Adityanath launched Bharat Taxi and the Mukhyamantri Krishak Samriddhi Yojana in Lucknow, UP, to support transport workers and farmers.

• The Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with Airports Authority of India (AAI), Lucknow Metro Rail and Lucknow Police to support the Bharat Taxi ecosystem.

Key Details: 
Bharat Taxi: A cooperative-based taxi service enabling two-wheeler, taxi and three-wheeler drivers to register under a zero-commission model, with Rs 5 lakh social security cover; operations have started in Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Varanasi and Prayagraj.
Mukhyamantri Krishak Samriddhi Yojana: Provides farmers with loans through the Uttar Pradesh Cooperative Gramya Vikas Bank at a reduced interest rate of 6% from 11%, including long-term loans for agriculture and farm machinery.

• The UP Government aims to extend the scheme’s benefits to 5 lakh small and marginal farmers in the coming years.
