Power Minister launches the #iCommit initiative

i.“#iCommit initiative” is headed by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under the administration of the Ministry of Power.
ii.This initiative aims towards the enhancement of energy system by involving governments, corporates, multilateral and bilateral organisations, Think Tanks, and individuals.

It is a Joint Venture (JV) of four reputed public-sector undertakings – NTPC (formerly National Thermal Power Corporation) Limited, Power Finance Corporation (PFC) Limited, REC (formerly Rural Electrification Corporation Limited) Limited, and POWERGRID Corporation of India Limited.

Nitin Gadkari launches UNDP national awareness campaign on ‘Prevention of Human and Animal Mortality on Highways’national awareness campaign Prevention of Human and Animal Mortality on Highways

On the occasion of World Environment Day (June 05, 2020), Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) Shri Nitin Gadkari has launched the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) national awareness campaign on ‘Prevention of Human and Animal Mortality on Highways’ through a video conference with the aim to reduce or eliminate cases of death on the roads.
i.Gadkari also asked all agencies to comply with the provisions issued by the Wildlife Institute of India under “Eco friendly measures to mitigate impacts of linear infrastructure on wildlife” in order to take care of wildlife.

Amritsar included in Delhi-Katra expressway; Punjab stretch to be converted into Greenfield Expressway Nitin Gadkari accepts demand for Greenfield Expressway to Amritsar

i.A Greenfield connectivity will be developed in Punjab stretch of Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway to Amritsar City from Nakodar in Jalandhar (Punjab) via five historic towns of Sultanpur Lodhi, Goindwal Sahib, Khadoor Sahib and Tarn Taran.
ii.It should be noted that this expressway is a part of Bharatmala Pariyojana with a total outlay of Rs 60,000 crore while its first phase involve investment of about Rs 25,000 crore i.e. Delhi-Amritsar.

DPIIT revises public procurement order to Encourage “Make in India” and enhance employmentDepartment of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade

To encourage the Make In India initiative and to increase the income and employment generation the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade(DPIIT) revised the public procurement order,2017 on 29th May 2019
Key Points:
i.The Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals identified around 55 types of chemicals, petrochemicals, pesticides and Dyestuff and assessed the domestic manufacturing capacity and local competition.
ii.For the 27 out of the 55 identified products, The local suppliers are eligible to bid for the estimated procurement value between Rs.5 lakh to Rs. 50 Lakh.
iii.For the remaining 28 products irrespective of the bid amount the procuring entities shall make procurement only from the local suppliers. 
iv.The Department of Chemical and petrochemicals prescription of local content of local chemicals and petrochemical content in public procurement:

  • Min 60% for 2020-21 
  • Min 70% for 2021-23
  • Min 80% for 2023-25

v.Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State shipping and Chemical and Fertilizer mentioned that the mandatory public procurement of Chemicals and Petrochemicals to boost manufacturing and production of goods, services and works will promote Make in India Initiative and strengthen Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.

i.Of the total tiger mortalities, 369 were due to natural causes, 168 due to poaching, 70 deaths are under scrutiny and 42 due to unnatural reasons, including accident or conflicts events.
ii.Maharashtra has reported second highest deaths, as it lost 125 big cats during this period followed by 111 in Karnataka, 88 in Uttarakhand, 54 each in Tamil Nadu and Assam, 35 each in Kerala and Uttar Pradesh, 17 in Rajasthan, 11 in Bihar and West Bengal and 10 in Chhattisgarh.

Krishnendu Majumdar, the 1st Indian origin from UK appointed as Chair of BAFTA BAFTA appoints Krishnendu Majumdar as Chairperson

On June 2, 2020 The British Academy of Film and Television Arts(BAFTA) appointed Emmy-winning television producer of ‘Hoff The Record’ Krishnendu Majumdar as its  chairperson for the next 3 years. He becomes the 1st Indian origin Chair from the United Kingdom(UK) in its 73 year-long history & is also the youngest chair in 35 years. He succeeds Pippa Harris who will continue as a deputy chairperson.
Note: Due to lack of diversity in this year’s Film Awards nominations he will also chair BAFTA’s Awards Review.

i.Krishnendu Majumdar was born in South Wales to Bengali parents.
ii.He has worked for 14 years in BAFTA & has been deputy chair of BAFTA for one year. In BAFTA he served as the chair of the Learning and New Talent Committee (2006-2010), the chair of the Television Committee (2015-2019) and a member of the board of trustees for 9 years.

ii.In December 2017, the United Nations General Assembly declared the 5th of June as the “International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing” in its annual resolution on sustainable fisheries.
iii.The first International Day for the fight against IUU fishing was observed in 2018.
