Overview of Government’s INR 6,28,993 Crore Relief Package to Support Indian EconomyFinance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman announces relief package of Rs 6,28,993 croreUnion Minister for Finance Nirmala Sitharaman announced an ‘Economic Relief from Pandemic’  stimulus package worth INR 6,28,993 crore to support the Indian Economy during the fight against COVID-19 pandemic.A total of 17 measures were announced. They can be classified into 3 broad categories – Economic Relief from Pandemic, Strengthening Public Health & Impetus for Growth & Employment.
i.Economic Relief from Pandemic
8 out of 17 announced schemes  were aimed at providing economic relief to people and businesses affected by COVID-19 pandemic, with special focus on health, reviving travel, and tourism sectors.
ii.Strengthening Public Health
A new scheme for strengthening public health infrastructure and human resources has been announced with an outlay of INR 23,220 crore, the amount is to be spent in the current financial year itself (2021-22). Out of INR 23,220 crore, Central’s share will be INR 15,000 crore.
iii.Impetus for Growth & Employment
The Government has announced 8 schemes to provide impetus for growth and employment in India.

3rd India-Bhutan Development Cooperation Talks held virtuallyIndia, Bhutan review development cooperationThe 3rd Development Cooperation Talks between India & Bhutan took place virtually. The Indian side was led by Rahul Chhabra, Secretary (Economic Relations), Ministry of External Affairs while the Bhutan side was led by Kinga Singye, Foreign Secretary, Bhutan.

  • During the meeting, both sides agreed to implement new projects in Bhutan in sectors like road infrastructure, water management and COVID-19 management.
  • India has committed INR 4500 crores for the implementation of development projects and INR 400 crores for the transitional Trade Support Facility under Bhutan’s 12th Five Year Plan (2018-2023).
  • The two sides reviewed the progress of the ongoing Project Tied Assistance (PTA) as well as the Small Development Projects (SDPs)/High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) under Bhutan’s 12th Five Year Plan.

NITI Aayog & UN hosted National Convention on Prevention of Obesity in New Delhi

On June 24, 2021, NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog and United Nations (UN) hosted a National Convention/Consultation on Prevention of Maternal, Adolescent and Childhood Obesity in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Dr. Vinod Kumar Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog and Co-chairmanship of Dr. R Hemalatha, Director, Nutrition Institute of India.

  • During the meeting obesity was addressed as a silent epidemic.

Aim of Convention:
To create policy options for prevention of overweight and obesity in children, adolescents and women in India, covering health, education and food system programs.
Points to be noted:
i.The meeting was on the sidelines of results of National Family Health Survey 5 (NFHS 5) (for 22 states and Union Territories) and Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS) which revealed a worrisome trend of increasing overweight and obesity among Indian children, adolescents and women.
ii.India is committed to achieve WHA (World Health Assembly) 2025/ SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) 2030 of ‘no increase in obesity’.

INS Tabar to participate in Joint Exercises with Friendly Navies of Africa & Europe

Indian Navy Ship (INS) Tabar has been deployed to participate in Russian Navy Day celebrations (from June 22-27, 2021) and joint exercises with friendly navies in Africa and Europe. INS Tabar started its journey on June 13, 2021 and will visit a number of places till September, 2021.

  • During the deployment, Tabar will move across the Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, Suez Canal, Mediterranean Sea and other ports.
  • It is also set to participate in bilateral exercises like Exercise Konkan with the UK, Exercise Varuna with French Navy, and Exercise Indra with Russian Navy.
  • INS Tabar is a Talwar-class stealth Frigate and is commanded by Captain M Mahesh. It is part of Indian Navy’s Western Fleet, which is based at Mumbai.

China launched 2 units of its World’s Largest Baihetan Hydropower StationChina launches 2 units of world's largest hydropower station ahead of CPC's centenary celebrationsi.On June 28, 2021, China launched two units of its world’s largest Baihetan hydropower station worth USD 34 billion. The units, currently under construction, are located on the Jinsha River, the upper section of the Yangtze River, and straddle the southwestern provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan.
ii.This launch came ahead of the centenary celebrations of the ruling Communist Party on July 1, 2021.
iii.It is equipped with 16 hydro-generating units, each with a capacity of one million kilowatts i.e. total installed capacity is 16 million kilowatts. It is the largest single-unit capacity in the world.

Widespread Violence on Smuggled Migrants – UNODC ReportViolence against smuggled migrantsOn 28th June 2021, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) released a report titled- “Abused and Neglected – A Gender Perspective on Aggravated Migrant Smuggling Offences & Responses”.
As per the report, Globally there are instances of Extreme violence, torture, rape highly prominant among the migrants who were smuggled across countries.
Findings of the Report:
i.Male migrants are subjected to forced labour & physical violence, whereas female migrants were highly exposed to sexual violence
ii.Major Transit routes for Human Trafficking – West and North Africa, the Mediterranean Sea, and Central America
iii.Very few instances of violence were recorded, because of lack of action taken by intended officials due to insignificant evidence of violence

  • Objective: To develop managerial and financial capabilities of MSME Entrepreneurs and create awareness on various initiatives taken by the central government (govt)/ State govt / Reserve Bank of India and Other agencies.
  • The programme will be started from Nagpur, Maharashtra followed by other important cities of the state.
  • MSME Prerana: It was designed by Indian Bank in collaboration with Poornatha and Co. to empower MSME entrepreneurs (especially women), under which MSMEs will be trained through capacity building workshops in local languages for skill development and business understanding.
  • As per the Annual Report of the MSME Ministry, Maharashtra is being one of the top 5 states with ~48 lakh estimated MSMEs, this program will enhance those MSME’s productivity.

Japan to provide approx $9.3 mn to build Cold Chain Facilities for Vaccines in IndiaJapan to provide India $9.3 mn to help build cold chain facilities for vaccinesIn order to contain COVID-19, Japan is all set to provide approximately US$9.3 million (~INR 69.15 Crore) assistance from its Emergency Grant Aid scheme to India for the building of cold chain facilities for safe storage of vaccines. In this regard, India will also get cold chain equipment including medical equipment.

  • Japan through its Emergency Grant Aid schemes aims to provide ‘Last One Mile Support’ for ensuring vaccination to each and every person of developing countries, through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Key Points:
i.This funding is also on the lines of the United States (US) announcement of donating more than 70 million doses of vaccines globally including India.
ii.The vaccine of AstraZeneca doses do not need special refrigeration facilities but cold storage facility is required for vaccines manufactured by US’ Pfizer.
iii.Japan has led operationalization of the COVAX Facility (COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access) for the procurement of vaccines, and recently announced US$800 million financial contribution in addition to existing US$200 million.

  • It should be noted that COVAX is co-led by Gavi (formerly the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation), the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (​CEPI) and World Health Organization (WHO).

US Announced $41 Million Additional COVID-19 Assistance to IndiaUS announces $41 million additional Covid-19 assistance to IndiaOn June 28, 2021, the US (United States) Agency for International Development (USAID) announced an additional $41 million assistance to help India to confront COVID-19, and strengthen India’s preparedness for future health emergencies.

  • The additional fund was provided as a support for COVID-19 testing, pandemic-related mental health services, timely referrals to medical services, and access to healthcare in remote areas.

US’s COVID-19 Assistances to India:
i.From the beginning of COVID-19, USAID has contributed more than $200 million for India’s COVID-19 relief and response efforts, including more than $50 million in emergency supplies.

  • It has also provided training for more than 214,000 frontline health workers on infection prevention and control, benefitting more than 42 million Indians.

ii.American Rescue Plan Act: More than $300 million has been allocated by the US under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 in March 2021 to provide emergency assistance to the hardest-hit countries in South Asia, including India and Nepal.
iii.In May 2021, the US President Joe Biden announced COVID-19 assistance worth $100 million to India.
iv.More than $1.2 million has been raised by the US-India Chambers of Commerce Foundation for COVID-19 related efforts in India (record-breaking fundraising) and it also has shipped nearly 120 ventilators and 1,000 oxygen concentrators.
v.The US decided to send 25 million COVID-19 shots of US vaccines to countries across the globe (India might be a significant recipient of it).
Note – The US represented India as an ‘incredibly important’ partner.

Ltd. (ITGI) launched an artificial intelligence (AI) powered digital identity (ID) tag named ‘Surabhi e-Tag’, to identify cattle based on muzzle identity.
Key Points:
i.Current Issue: Due to lack of tamper-proof, scalable, and unique digital identity of cattle, Cattle insurers are facing higher loss due to moral hazard. Hence accurate cattle identification has become the key requirement of cattle insurance companies.
ii.To overcome this issue, Dvara E-Dairy captures muzzle images of the cattle with the mobile phone using Surabhi mobile application and stores them in a secured cloud server as a unique digital ID.
ii.The Surabhi e-Tag has digital IDs with hi-resolution muzzle images of the cattle for the use of insurance companies.

Journalist P Sainath Awarded Japan’s Fukuoka Grand Prize 2021P. Sainath awarded 2021 Fukuoka PrizeRenowned journalist and founder of PARI (People’s Archive of Rural India) P Sainath (Palagummi Sainath) has been awarded Japan’s Fukuoka Grand Prize for 2021.He was awarded for promoting civil cooperation through his writing.
The award is given in three categories: Academic Prize, Culture Prize and the Grand Prize.

  • The Academic Prize is won by Prof. Kishimoto Mio of Japan for her understanding of Chinese history and
  • The Arts and Culture Prize is won by filmmaker Prabda Yoon of Thailand for increasing understanding of Japan in Thailand and for pursuing “a deeper philosophical insight into the future of humanity.

Key Points:
i.The award is given to individuals and organisations for their work in preserving the Asian culture.
ii.The Grand Prize has earlier been awarded to Muhammad Yunus from Bangladesh, historian Romila Thapar, and sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan.
iii.The last Indian to be awarded the prize was A. R. Rahman (2016).
iv.Eleven Indians have received the Fukuoka Prize so far.About the Fukuoka Prize:
The Fukuoka Prize was established by Japan’s Fukuoka city and the Fukuoka City International Foundation.It is given to individuals and organisations for their work in preserving Asian culture.

  • Academic Prize – 3 million yen.

India’s Term as Chair of ILO’s Governing Body Completed in June 2021India completes term as Chair of ILO''s Governing BodyIn June 2021, Apurva Chandra, Labour & Employment Secretary, completed his tenure as Chairperson of Governing Body (GB) of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

  • In October 2020, India assumed the Chairmanship of the GB of ILO after 35 years. Apurva Chandra has been elected as Chairperson for the period October 2020 – June 2021.
  • Next Chairperson: Anna Jardfelt, the Swedish Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva was elected as the next chairperson of GB of ILO for the period 2021-2022.

About GB of ILO:
i.The GB is the apex executive body of the ILO and it decides policies, programmes, agenda, budget, and elects the Director-General.
ii.The Chairperson will preside over the GB’s meeting which will be held thrice a year i.e. in March, June and November. The policies of the ILO will be set by the International Labour Conference, which meets once a year in June, in Geneva, Switzerland.
Apurva Chandra’s Participation:
i.During India’s Chairmanship, 2 sessions of the GB were held i.e. in October 2020 and March 2021, the 109th session of the International Labour Conference also held in June 2021 (virtual mode).
ii.During his term, he recommended the member countries to adopt labour standards of ILO to tackle COVID-19 and increasing digital footprint at the workplace.
iii.He shared India’s position on granting flexibility to member countries in ratifying ILO Conventions and encouraged the signing of Social Security Agreements
iv.India’s reforms in providing social security to gig and platform workers through a Social Security Fund were highlighted in the international forum.

Umesh Sinha Re-Appointed as the Deputy Election Commissioner of India

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved a one-year extension to Umesh Sinha, Deputy Election Commissioner of India on contract basis.

  • The appointment is made for one year upto 30th June, 2022.
  • Umesh Sinha was a 1986 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer, who was re-employed after his age of superannuation.
  • He has earlier served as the Chief Election Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh.

‘Icius Tukarami’: New Spider Species Named After 26/11 Martyr Tukaram OmbleNew spider species found in MaharashtraScientists have discovered two new species of jumping spiders in Maharashtra and named one of them as “Icius tukarami”,after Tukaram Omble, the Mumbai Police Assistant Sub-Inspector who was killed during the 26/11 terror attacks in the city.

  • The second species of the jumping spider was called Phintella cholkei which has been named after an avid spider researcher and naturalist, Kamlesh Cholkhe who passed away in 2020.

Key Points:
i.These species are distributed in Thane and Aarey Milk Colony in Mumbai.
ii.The two spider discoveries have been published in a Russian Scientific Journal Arthropoda Selecta.
iii.The scientific paper was published by Prajapati, Somnath Kumbhar,Jhon Caleb , Rajesh Sanap and Ravi D Kamboj.

Sajan Prakash becomes first-ever Indian swimmer to make Olympic ‘A’ cut

A 27- year old Indian Swimmer Sajan Prakash from kerala has become first-ever Indian swimmer to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic 2020 by breaching the ‘A’ standard time in the men’s 200m butterfly event at the 2021 Sette Colli Trophy in Rome, Italy.

  • The Games ‘A’ standard was set at 1:56.48 seconds, he had completed 1:56:38 seconds that is 0.10 seconds faster at the FINA-accredited Olympic qualifier.
  • He competed in the Olympic Games Rio 2016 under the universality quota.

Malayalam Cinematographer & Director Sivan Passed AwayMalayalam cinematographer-filmmaker Sivan passes away at 89Veteran Malayalam cinematographer and director Sivasankaran Nair, popularly known as Sivan passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.He was born on 14 May 1932 in Haripad, Kerala.
About Sivasankaran Nair(Sivan):
i.Sivan was known as Kerala’s first professional press photographer.
ii.In 1959,he founded “Sivan Studios” at Thiruvananthapuram Statue junction, which was very popular and a known hub for cultural affairs.
iii.He has won National Award three times in his career.
iv.He was well known for his work as a still photographer from a national award winning Malayalam film Chemmeen.
v.Some of his popular films include Abhayam, Yagam, Keshu, Oru Yathra, Kochu Kochu Mohangal and Kilivathil, among others.

Pakistan’s Former Caretaker PM Mir Hazar Khoso Passed Away

Pakistan’s former caretaker Prime Minister(PM) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso passed away due to a cardiac arrest in 26 June 2021 Quetta, Pakistan.He was born in Goth Mir Azam Khan on Sept 30, 1929.

  • He served as the Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan from 25 March to 5 June 2013.
  • He was a judge by profession and served as the chief justice of the Federal Shariat Court.

Note:
The Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan is the head of government in Pakistan following the dissolution of the National Assembly. The purpose of this post is to ensure free and fair elections are held.

John McAfee Antivirus Software Pioneer Passed Away 

John McAfee (75 years old), the founder of McAfee antivirus software, was found dead in a prison outside Barcelona, Spain after Spain’s National Court approved his extradition to the United States (US) over multiple tax fraud charges. He was born in Cinderford, United Kingdom(UK).
McAfee Associates, the anti-virus software company was started in 1987.

Background:
i.The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/70/267 on 14th June 2016 and proclaimed the 29th June of every year as the International Day of the Tropics.
ii.The First International Day of the Tropics was observed across the globe on 29th June 2016.
Why June 29?
The June 29th Marks the launch of the inaugural State of the Tropics Report in 2014 as the culmination of a collaboration between twelve leading tropical research institutions.

National Statistics Day 2021 – June 29 National Statistics DayThe National Statistics Day is annually observed on 29th June to popularise the use of Statistics in everyday life and sensitise the public as to how Statistics helps in shaping and framing policies. The day also commemorates the birth anniversary of Padma Vibhushan Prof Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (P C Mahalanobis) who was referred to as the “Father of Indian Statistics”.
Aim:
To popularise the use of Statistics in everyday life and to create awareness on the benefits of Statistics towards framing policies.
The theme of the National Statistics Day 2021 is “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)-2: End Hunger, Achieve Food Security and Improved Nutrition and Promote Sustainable Agriculture”.
Background:
i.29th June was declared as the National Statistics Day by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
ii.National Statistics Day is celebrated at the National Level to recognise the contributions of Prof. P C Mahalanobis towards establishing the National Statistical System.
iii.The first National Statistics Day was first observed on 29th June 2006.

Justice Ravi Vijaykumar Malimath Appointed Acting Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh HCJustice Malimath appointed acting chief justice of Himachal PradeshPresident of India,Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Justice Ravi Vijaykumar Malimath as the acting Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court(HC) with effect from July 1,2021.

  • He will succeed Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy,who is due to retire on June 30,2021.
  • He was appointed by the exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India.

About Justice Ravi Vijaykumar Malimath:
i.Justice Ravi Vijaykumar Malimath is currently serving as the Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
ii.Earlier he has practised in the High Court of Karnataka, High Court of Madras.
iii.He has also practised in Supreme Court of India in Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, Labour, Company, Service cases, etc. He specializes in Constitutional Law.
Note:
Chief Justices and Judges of the high courts retire at the age of 62. The retirement age of the chief justice of India and judges of the Supreme Court is 65 years.
