Rudreswara Temple becomes India’s 39th UNESCO World Heritage SiteUNESCO’s World Heritage ListDuring the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), India’s nomination of Kakatiya Rudreswara Temple (also known as the Ramappa Temple) at Palampet, Mulugu district, Warangal, Telangana was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. It will be India’s 39th World Heritage Site & the 1st World Heritage Site from Telangana.

  • Rudreswara Temple was proposed by India as its only nomination for the UNESCO World Heritage site tag for the year 2019.
  • The WHC consists of 21 Members and China is the Chair of the Committee.

Kakatiya Rudreswara Temple
i.It was constructed in 1213 AD during the reign of Kakatiya Empire by Recharla Rudra Reddy, a general of Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva.

  • It is also known as Ramappa Temple, after the sculptor who executed the work in the temple for 40 years. The presiding deity in the temple is Ramalingewara Swamy.

Paseo del Prado boulevard and Retiro Park added to UNESCO World Heritage list
The tree-lined Paseo del Prado boulevard & the adjoining Retiro Park, both situated in Madrid, Spain were added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list by WHC of UNESCO.

  • The committee also inscribed Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China (China), Trans-Iranian Railway (Iran) to the World Heritage List.

National Web Portal for Sharing R&D I-STEM Entered Phase IIIndian Science Technology and Engineering Facilities Map (I-STEM) (www.istem.gov.in), the national web portal for sharing Research and development (R&D) facilities, entered into its 2nd phase with an extension of 5 years i.e. till 2026.

  • Initially, the I-STEM was launched in January 2020 by the Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi as an initiative of the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India under the PM-STIAC (PM’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisory Council) mission.
  • Objective: To strengthen the R&D ecosystem of India and to locate the required facilities that are needed for the R&D work in India.

Features of I-STEM:
i.Connecting Researchers with Resources: Through the I-STEM web portal, the researchers could get access to existing publicly funded R&D facilities in the country.
ii.The R&D equipment in institutions across India could be located and accessed through I-STEM. It also facilitates researchers to access slots for the use of the equipment and to share the details of the outcomes, such as patents, publications and technologies.
Note – Phase I of I-STEM: Under the 1st phase, more than 20,000 pieces of equipment from 1050 institutions across the country were listed and it also included more than 20,000 Indian researchers.
Scheduled Initiatives under Phase – II:
i.Listing of R&D Facilities: Indigenous technology products under R&D and different City Knowledge and Innovation Clusters which are supported by the Office of PSA will also be listed under the portal.
ii.The portal will also provide access to selected R&D software for students and scientists to undertake research projects.
iii.Partial funding assistance will be provided under this phase to researchers, start-ups, and institutions (that use the I-STEM facilities) of tier-2 and tier-3 cities.iv.Regional centres will also be established under the 2nd phase to provide technical training and skill development.

  • India is the 1st country that Abdulla Shahid is visiting after being elected as PGA-Elect on 7th June 2021.

Govt is Implementing BPKP as a Sub-scheme of PKVY for Promoting Organic Farming

Since 2020-21, the government is implementing Bhartiya Prakritik Krishi Padhati (BPKP) as a sub-scheme of Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) for promoting Organic farming (traditional indigenous practices).

  • Under BPKP, financial assistance of Rs 12200/hectare for 3 years is being provided for cluster formation, capacity building, and continuous handholding. It promotes biomass mulching, use of cow dung-urine formulations, plant-based preparations and time to time working of soil for aeration.
  • Till now, BPKP covered an area of 4.9 lakh ha in 8 states and released Rs 4980.99 lakh. So far, Telangana has not taken up natural farming under BPKP.

Note – PKVY is a sub-component of the Soil Health Management (SHM) scheme under the National Mission of Sustainable Agriculture(NMSA).

JNCASR ranked 23rd in Nature Index Top 50 Rising Institutions for Materials Science 2021JNCASR enters Nature Index Top 50 for Materials ScienceIn Nature Index 2021 Materials Science tables, the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre For Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru (Karnataka) has ranked 23rd in the top 50 Rising Institutions worldwide. It is the only Indian institution in this list which has been topped by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) of China.

  • These institutes are ranked by change in article share (Share) in materials science from 2019 to 2020 i.e. number of scientific articles and papers published in leading journals.
  • JNCASR’s Change in Share 2019–2020 percentage was 120.6% as its share was 8.85 in 2019 and 19.52 in 2020. The share of SJTU in 2020 was 114.73.

JNCASR ranked 171st in the Leading 200 institutions
JNCASR also ranked 171st in the table of Leading 200 institutions worldwide along with IISc (Indian Institute of Science), Bengaluru (Karnataka) which was ranked at 165.

  • This list was topped by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China.

Key Points:
i.The top 50 rising institutions list includes 19 institutes from China, 12 from the United States and two from the United Kingdom (UK) along with JNCASR.
ii.In 2019, the JNCASR was ranked 7th among the top ten Young Graduate Universities by Nature Index 2019. It also ranked 17th among the top 50 Young Universities in Chemistry.

Indian Navy Chief attends 325th Russian Navy Day CelebrationsIndian Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh attended the 325th Russian Navy Day celebrations held at St. Petersburg, Russia on 25th July, 2021. Indian Navy’s Stealth Frigate INS Tabar participated in the Navy Day Celebrations of Russia.

  • INS Tabar arrived at St. Petersburg as part of a five-day goodwill visit.
  • The two navies will conduct a naval exercise to strengthen the ties. The exercise will be part of the Indo-Russian Naval Exercise ‘INDRA’.
  • The engagements are aimed at enhancing maritime security and conducting combined operations against maritime threats.

MAKS International Air Show 2021
The 15th International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS 2021 organized by Aviasalon JSC took place from July 20-25, 2021 at Gromov Flight Research Institute’s airfield in Zhukovsky, near Moscow, Russia.
i.During the event, Russia handed over to Indian Air Force (IAF) staff a commercial offer to deliver 21 MiG-29 Fighter Aircrafts.
ii.IAF’s Sarang Helicopter Display Team performed in the MAKS International Air show for the 1st time.
iii.Russia unveiled a prototype of a new Fighter jet ‘Checkmate’. Checkmate is a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet which has stealth capabilities and advanced characteristics.
iv.For the 1st time, Russia invited India to the Russia-US-China Troika Plus meeting on Afghanistan.

IFC lends $250 million to HDFC Ltd to boost Green Housing Finance in Indiai.The investment arm of the World Bank Group, International Finance Corporation (IFC) has sanctioned $250 million (~Rs.1858 Crore) to HDFC (Housing Development Finance Corporation) Ltd to enhance inexpensive housing finance in India under the themes Affordable & Green housing.
ii.This loan will support HDFC limited to grow its affordable housing and emerging green affordable housing portfolio by providing access to people with lower incomes.
iii.This loan is on the lines of India’s target of providing ‘Housing for All’.

Assam’s Cachar District won Silver SKOCH Award for Pushti Nirbhor

Cachar district of Assam won the Silver SKOCH Award under the Health category at the national level for its ‘Pushti Nirbhor’ project on transforming and developing Nutri gardens at houses in Dinnathpur Bagicha Village, near the India-Bangladesh border in Cachar. ‘Pushti Nirbhor’ means nutrition-dependent.
Keerthi Jalli, Deputy Commissioner Cachar received the award.

  • Pushti Nirbhor, a convergence project which aims to make the village’s self-reliant through household Nutri gardens which will also generate income during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Under Pushti Nirbhor, more than 30 thousand seedlings of vegetables, fruits and herbal plants were given to 140 beneficiaries. Each household of the village was given payment for 75 man-days to implement the project.

APPOINTMENTS & RESIGNATIONS          

Sanjay Rai ‘Sherpuria’ Became National Brand Ambassador for SDG ChoupalTo honour the various initiatives undertaken by Sanjay Rai ‘Sherpuria’, the entrepreneur and Social worker, during COVID-19, SDG Choupal named him as the National Brand Ambassador of it.
Initiatives Undertaken:
i.Under COVID-19 Sanjay Rai ‘Sherpuria’ distributed oxygen concentrators to more than 200 institutions and individuals of Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh.
ii.He provided the facility of an ambulance, a telemedicine vehicle, essential medicines, doctors and many workers in Ghazipur.  Masks and medicines were distributed by him to more than 60 thousand families.
Note – A coffee table book on Sanjay Rai ‘Sherpuria’ also published in collaboration with Ghazipur Nagrik Abhinandan Samiti, SDG Choupal and Rotary Club International.

BS Yediyurappa Announced his Resignation as Karnataka CM On July 25, 2021, Bookanakere Siddalingappa (B.S.)Yediyurappa announced his resignation as Chief Minister (CM) of Karnataka.He had submitted his resignation to Thawar Chand Gehlot,the Governor of Karnataka.

  • In the exercise of powers vested under Part IV of the Constitution of India, Article 164 (1), Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot accepted the resignation.
  • Consequent to his resignation, the Council of Ministers headed by BS Yediyurappa was also dissolved by the Governor.

About BS Yediyurappa:
i.He served as the CM of Karnataka for 4 terms, becoming the only CM to do so in Karnataka.
ii.He started his 1st tenure as the CM of Karnataka in November 2007 and finally he served as the 19th CM of Karnataka from 26 July 2019 to 26 July 2021.
About Article 164:
i.Article 164(1) Other provisions as to Ministers – The Chief Minister shall be appointed by the Governor and the other Ministers shall be appointed by the Governor on the advice of the Chief Minister, and the Ministers shall hold office during the pleasure of the Governor.
ii.Article 164(1 A) of the constitution defines the total number of Ministers, including the Chief Minister, in the Council of Ministers in a State should not exceed 15 percent of the total number of members of the Legislative Assembly of that State.

  • Provided that, the number of Ministers, including the CM in a State, should not be less than 12.

India wins 13 Medals at World Cadet Wrestling Championships 2021India has finished the World Cadet Wrestling Championships 2021 with 13 Medals (5 Gold, 1 Silver, 7 Bronze). The World Cadet Wrestling Championships 2021 was held from July 19-25, 2021 at Budapest, Hungary.

  • The Indian Men’s Team were crowned as Freestyle Champions. It is India’s 1st ever team freestyle world title at any level. While the Women’s Wrestling Team clinched the Silver Medal.
  • The Cadet World Championship is an annual event held for Wrestlers aged between the ages of 16-17 years.
  • It is held in 3 categories Greco-Roman (GR), Freestyle (FS) and Women’s wrestling (WW) and is organized by United World Wrestling (UWW).

Amitabh Kant Released a Book on Indian Start-up Ecosystem – ‘Shifting Orbits’Amitabh Kant, Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India) has launched a book titled ‘Shifting Orbits: Decoding the Trajectory of the Indian Start-up Ecosystem’.

  • The book explains the rise of the start-up landscape in India in 4 different sections viz innovation, incubation, funding and industry perspectives.
  • The virtual book launch was organised by the Innovation Venturing and Entrepreneurship in India Network (iVEIN).

Address by Amitabh Kant:
i.While addressing the launch, he stated the emergence of India as the 2nd fastest economy in digitization among the 17 major digital economies.
ii.The consumer digital economy which is at $89-90 billion in 2020 was expected to become an $800 billion market by 2030.
iii. In June 2021, the real-time transactions using Unified Payments Interface(UPI) recorded 2.8 billion transactions worth $5.4 trillion.
iv.He noted about Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), which will drive the start-up revolution of India as they could raise money in Indian markets from the Indian public.
v.Indian start-ups are projected to raise $13.7 billion in funding by 2021. Totally 52 startups have turned into Unicorns in the Indian market.

  • Unicorn – It is a privately-owned startup with a valuation of over $1 billion.

22nd Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas – 26th July 2021India celebrates the 22nd Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26th July 2021 which marks the victory of India over Pakistan in the war fought from 3rd May to 26th July 1999 in Kargil, Jammu & Kashmir.
The day remembers the valour and sacrifices of the heroes of the Kargil War and pays homage to the martyrs who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Background:
i.On 26th July 1999, the Indian army successfully executed Operation Vijay, which evicted the infiltrators, backed by the Pakistani Army, from the high outposts in Kargil after an armed conflict that lasted for more than 60 days.
ii.Around 527 soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces were lost during the Kargil War.
Operation Vijay:
i.Then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared the success of the operation Vijay on July 14th and the operation was officially declared closed on 26th July 1999, since then the day is annually celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas.

ii.The day was established as a response to the request of Ecuador.
iii.The first International Day of the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem was held on 26th July 2016.

1st World Drowning Prevention Day – 25th July 2021The United Nations(UN)’s World Drowning Prevention Day will be annually observed across the globe on 25th July starting from 2021. The day aims to highlight the impacts of death by drowning on families and communities and to provide solutions to prevent death by drowning.

  • 25th July 2021 marks the observance of the first-ever World Drowning Prevention Day.
  • The World Health Organisation(WHO) hosted the global launch event of World Drowning Prevention Day. WHO also produces the World Drowning Prevention day related advocacy materials

The theme of World Drowning Prevention Day is “Anyone Can Drown, No One Should”.
Background:
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/75/273 on 28th April 2021 and proclaimed the 25th July of every year as World Drowning Prevention Day.

  • The resolution also invited the WHO to coordinate the actions on drowning prevention within the UN system.

Amit Shah inaugurated Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme & Sohra Afforestation Project in MeghalayaAmit Shah inaugurates Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme in Megalayai.On July 25, 2021, Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Co-operation inaugurated the ‘Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme’ at Sohra in East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya along with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Kongkal Sangma.
ii.This state government scheme was funded by the Ministry of DoNER (Development of North Eastern Region) under NESIDS (North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme) in 2019 with an outlay of Rs. 24.08 cr.
iii.The dignitaries also launched the Sohra Afforestation Project which is a joint initiative of DGAR (Director General of the Assam Rifles) and Government of Meghalaya.
iv.Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for the Multipurpose Convention Centre and Exhibition Facility of the North Eastern Space Applications Centre-NESAC, in Shillong, Meghalaya.He also inaugurated the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Mawiong in Shillong.
v.He also launched the Green Sohra Afforestation Campaign at Sohra (Cherrapunji).The slogan for the Campaign is “Evergreen Northeast”.

UP Govt, Sapio Analytics Signed MoU to Distribute Automation Software ‘Accloud’The Department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of Uttar Pradesh (UP), signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sapio Analytics, to provide a complimentary license of Accloud, an automation software to MSMEs of UP.

  • Through the MoU, the Accloud automation software, which worth Rs 72 crores will be provided free of cost to 20,000 MSMEs of UP (those who are applying for it) for 1 year.

Features of Accloud:
i.It is an online accounting and business management software, it can be operated on both mobile and web and it is available in different languages (especially Hindi).
ii.It will automate the MSMEs business’s accounting, sales, and inventory management process to ease Goods and Services Tax (GST) compliance.
iii.It has a support team and hotline number to automate the financing process of MSMEs.
