India Joined Naval Exercise ‘Iran-Russia Maritime Security Belt 2021’Iran-Russia Maritime Security Belt 2021i.The Indian Navy has joined Iran and Russia and Participated in two-day long navy exercise “Iran-Russia Maritime Security Belt 2021” on February 17-18, 2021 which was held in the northern part of the Indian Ocean. India’s participation represented a message of “peace and friendship for neighboring and regional countries”.
ii.The exercise saw the participation of forces and vessels from the navy divisions of both the Iranian army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) along with a Russian destroyer, logistics ship and a helicopter were to participate in the drill.

Amazon India to begin its 1st Manufacturing Line in India at Chennai Amazon India to commence Electronic Devices Manufacturing in IndiaOn February 16, 2021, Amazon India announced that it will begin its 1st Device Manufacturing Line in India for production of electronic devices at Chennai by the end of 2021. It has collaborated with Contract Manufacturer Cloud Network Technology, a subsidiary of Foxconn for the manufacturing process.

  • To begin with, Amazon will start manufacturing Amazon Fire TV sticks from India.

India, Australia sign Amended MoU to increase cooperation in Civil Space ActivitiesIndia & Australia expand space cooperationOn February 17, 2021, Australian Space Agency & Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) signed an Amendment of the ‘2012 India – Australia Inter-Governmental MoU for cooperation in Civil Space Science, Technology and Education’ for enhancing cooperation between the two countries in Civil Space Activities.

  • The Agreement for Amendment is signed by Dr. K. Sivan, Chairman, ISRO/ Secretary, Department of Space & Mr. Enrico Palermo, Head, Australian Space Agency during the Virtual meeting.

Collaborations under Progress:

Australian Space Agency, ISRO are working together to set up Temporary ground station tracking facilities in Australia for ISRO’s Gaganyaan Mission.

  • Gaganyaan Mission: India’s 1st Human space mission scheduled to launch in Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh by 2022.
  • India’s Gaganyaan Mission will make it just the 4th Nation to send a crew into space after Russia (1st), U.S and China.

  • The New Agreement covers an amendment to the Civil Space Cooperation (CSC) MoU signed by both Countries in 2012.

MoE to rename Schools Under Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan after Subas Chandra Bose

Ministry of Education (MoE) is set to rename residential schools and hostels funded under Samagra Shiksha scheme of MoE as ‘Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose residential schools and hostels’  to inspire them to achieve high standards of quality education & create awareness about the facility of such residential schools & hostels. Under the Samagra Shiksha scheme, MoE provides financial assistance to States & UTs to set up residential schools & hostels in hilly terrain, small & sparsely populated areas for children who are in need of shelter and care.

RBI permits Residents to Make Remittances to IFSCs under LRSRBI permits residents to make remittances to IFSCs under LRSi.On February 16, 2021, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) permitted resident individuals to make remittances under Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) to International Financial Services Centres (IFSCs) set up in India under the Special Economic Zone Act, 2005. In this regard, Authorized Dealer (AD) Category 1 Banks allow resident individuals to make these remittances subject to the following conditions:

  • The remittance shall be made only for making investments in IFSCs in securities, other than those issued by entities/companies resident (outside IFSC) in India.
  • Resident Individuals can open a non interest bearing Foreign Currency Account (FCA) in IFSCs, for making the investments under LRS.
  • Any funds lying idle in the account for a period upto 15 days will be immediately repatriated to domestic INR account of the investor in India.

RBI issues draft guidelines on Credit Default SwapsRBI issues draft guidelines on credit default swapsi.On February 16, 2021, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the Draft Reserve Bank of India (Credit Derivatives) Directions, 2021 in exercise of the powers conferred under section 45W of the RBI Act 1934 read with section 45U.
ii.The guidelines are for allowing derivatives trading in the credit default swaps (CDS) in over-the-counter (OTC) markets and on recognised stock exchanges in the country.
iii.RBI invited comments on the Draft Directions by March 15, 2021.

-It was established on the recommendation of the Hilton Young Commission.
-RBI is responsible only for printing the currency notes. Minting of coins is done by the Government of India.

India’s Growth to Rebound in FY22 at 10%: S&PIndia to grow at 10% in FY22On February 16, 2021 S&P (Standard & Poors) Global Ratings released a report titled, ‘Cross-Sector Outlook: India’s Escape From Covid’, where it estimated that India will have an economic recovery at 10% in FY22, on a lower base. Earlier, it had revised India’s Real GDP Forecast for FY21 to -7.7%(contract by 7%) from -9%.
Highlights of the Report:
S&P Relies on the following for Recovery in FY 22, as these support the economy:

  • Good agriculture performance that is consistent
  • COVID-19 infection curve to flatten
  • Pickup in government spending

i.In addition to this, India also needs to vaccinate about  1.4 billion people
ii.It also mentioned that, the 91st Union Budget 2021-22, that is India’s 1st Digital Budget will also support the recovery
Risks & Permanent Loss 
Still Indian economy faces important risks as it transitions from stabilisation to recovery.
India also faces permanent loss of output against its pre-pandemic path, suggesting a long-term production deficit of about 10% of GDP.
Banking
Weak loans ratio is estimated at 12% of gross loans and credit cost will remain elevated at 2.2-2.7%.
The performance of banking sector is expected to improve materially in FY2023

GoI to sell its 26.12% Stake in Tata Communications Ltd by March 20, 2021

Government of India (GoI) is set to sell its entire stake of 26.12% in Tata Communications Ltd (TCL) (formerly known as VSNL) through an offer for sale and strategic sale route by March 20, 2021. Several Merchant Bankers like Goldman Sachs, ICICI Securities, SBI Capital Markets & others have expressed interest in buying the stake and are making presentations before the officials of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management.

New Chameleon Species “Brookesia nana”: Earth’s Smallest Reptile Species

Scientists from Germany and Madagascar have discovered a new species of Chameleon “Brookesia nana” in the montane rainforest in northern Madagascar.. This is the Earth’s smallest known reptile.  Brookesia nana belongs to the genus Brookesia.  The male species measures 21.6 mm and the female measures 28.9 mm.
The world’s longest reptile reticulated python (6.25 meter) is as long as 289 brookesia nanas and Sphaerodactylus ariasae, the smallest species of lizards is 20 to 25% longer than brookesia nana.
The discovery of Brookesia nana is published in the Journal Scientific Reports.

  • The year 2021 marks the 20th Commemoration of the International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD) since it was created in 2002 by Childhood Cancer International (CCI).
  • In order to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of ICCD, the CCI & International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) unveiled a joint three-year campaign called ‘Tree of Life’.

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Cancer remains a leading cause of death among children.
  • Each Year, around 4, 00, 000 Children & adolescents of 0-19 years old are diagnosed with Cancer.

Tamil Nadu CM unveils Industrial Policy 2021-2025 & MSME policy 2021; 28 MoUs SignedTamil Nadu CM unveils Industrial, MSME policy 2021i.On February 16, 2021, the Chief Minister (CM) of Tamil Nadu (TN), Edappadi Karuppa Palaniswami, unveiled “Tamil Nadu Industrial Policy 2021-2025” and MSME (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises) Policy 2021 during a grand event in Chennai. He also launched and laid foundation stones for projects.
ii.The reason behind these policies is to make Tamil Nadu a number one destination to invest, innovate and create products and associated services and to create a vibrant ecosystem for MSMEs/startups.
iii.The event saw the launch of totally 46 projects for an investment of Rs 33,465 crore that would ensure jobs to 2,19,714 people were launched.
iv.The state government of TN signed a total of 28 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with a cumulative investment of Rs 28,053 crores across various sectors, including Electric Vehicles, Wind Energy, Auto Components, City Gas, Textiles etc. These MoUs will generate employment for 68,775 persons.
