China’s Chang’e 5 lunar probe finds 1st on-site Evidence of Water on Moon’s SurfaceIn accordance with the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances, China’s Chang’e 5 lunar lander has found the first-ever on-site evidence of water in rocks and soil of the surface of the moon.
- As per the journal, the lunar soil at the landing site contains less than 120 parts-per-million (ppm) water or 120 grams water per ton, and a light, vesicular rock carries 180 ppm, which are much drier than that on Earth.
i.A device on-board the lunar lander measured the spectral reflectance of the regolith and the rock and detected water.
ii.As per the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), water content can be estimated since the water molecule or hydroxyl absorbs at a frequency of about 3 micrometers.
iii.Solar wind has contributed the most humidity to lunar soil as it brought hydrogen that makes up the water (H20).
iv.The samples are a mixture of granules both on the surface and beneath.
About Chang’e 5:
It is the fifth lunar exploration mission of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program, and China’s first lunar sample-return mission. It was launched in November 2020 and it returned to earth in December 2020.
