Maharashtra Government announces construction of 800 kms Nagpur-Mumbai expressway
Maharashtra Chief Minister DEVENDRA FADNAVIS announced that the government will build an 800-km-long expressway connecting Mumbai with Nagpur by September 2019 on JULY 31, 2015.
- Trough this Expressway, A road trip between Mumbai and Nagpur will soon take just 10 hours nearly half the time it currently takes to complete the journey.
- The estimated cost of the proposed Mumbai-Nagpur expressway is Rs30,000 crore.
- The project will be completed in two phases. In the first phase, four lanes will be built. In the second phase, the government proposes to concretize the road, add two more lanes, and build tunnels and the exit roads that will connect to smaller cities and villages.
- This would be a six-lane road and in the first phase a four lane road would be constructed. This road will be equipped with CCTV cameras, Wi-Fi facility and optical fiber network.
This project would be completed in coming five years and the travel time between the state capital and second capital would be brought down from 14 hours to 10 hours.
Assam govt bans sale of drinking water brand
The Assam Government banned the sale of packed drinking water named “SPRING DROP” manufactured by Morigaon-based Company for an initial period of 30 days with immediate effect on AUGUST 1, 2015.
- The Government took this decision due to the following reports received from the Food Analyst and the Director of Referral Food Laboratory, Ghaziabad, that the water sold by that brand name contained CHROMIUM above permissible limit.
- The state government already banned the sale of Annapurna chilly sauce and Niyor packaged drinking water after it was found after laboratory tests confirmed presence of benzoic acid and fluoride beyond maximum permissible limits in the two products respectively.
- Annapurna chilly sauce, manufactured by Satez Agro Products in Assam was found to have benzoic acid above the maximum permissible limit.
- Niyor packaged drinking water, manufactured by Blue Bell Enterprise of Assam was found to contain fluoride higher than the maximum permissible limit.
Tata Motors bags 914-cr order from Indian Army
Tata Motors Ltd has bagged an order of Rs 914 crore from the Indian Army to supply 1,239 high mobility vehicles. Tata Motors along with Mahindra and Mahindra has also been short listed for supply of 3,192 vehicles to the Army, which is replacing Maruti Suzuki’s Gypsy and Mahindra Commander.
- Tata Motor will supply indigenously developed 6×6 multi-axle trucks that are mainly functional for loading and unloading ammunition.
- Army is planning to replace over 30,000 to 40,000 vehicles and going open its defence orders to private sector. Tata Motors is expected to be the huge gainer among others in defence orders.
- VS NORONHA, Vice-President of Defence and Government Business said that this was the first single-largest order of high mobility vehicle was awarded to Tata’s after trial duration of 25 months in demanding conditions.
India and Bangladesh exchange 162 enclaves
Almost 68 years after the world’s most difficult border disputes keeping the thousands of people in stateless. India and Bangladesh exchanged 162 enclaves one minute after midnight (12:01 am) on AUGUST 1, 2015.
- Thousands of people who have been living without schools, clinics or power for a generation were in celebration for their new citizenship with the exchange of enclaves.
- 111 Indian enclaves measuring 17,160 acres became Bangladesh territory and 51 Bangladesh enclaves measuring 7,110 acres became Indian Territory.
- Around 37,000 people are living in Indian enclaves in Bangladesh while 14,000 people are staying in Bangladeshi enclaves in India.
- Between July 31, 2015 and June 30, 2016, the entire process, including physical exchange of enclaves and land parcels in adverse possession along with boundary demarcation, is expected to be completed.
- Both governments have worked together to facilitate trouble-free movement of these residents before the stipulated date ofNovember 30, 2015.
This decision for exchange of enclaves was during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh on June 6-7, 2015.

- India’s top male player Saurav Ghosal returned to the top 20 of Professional Squash Association (PSA)men’s rankings for the first time since November last year moving to 19th position.

Indian golfer Ranveer Saini bags gold in Special Olympics
- Ranveer Singh Saini created history by becoming the first Indian golfer to win a gold medal at the Special Olympics World Games
- The 14-year-old autistic golfer achieved the feat in GF Golf-Level 2 Alternate Shot Team Play event
- Ranveer and his partner Monica Jajoo were nine shots clear of joint second-placed teams from Hong Kong (Tsz Leung Chung-Ka Kit Lam) and Nippon (Takefumi Hiyoshi-Tadatoshi Sakai).
India’s Prabhroop Sekhon wins two golds in Special Olympics World Games
- 14-year-old PRABHROOP SEKHON, student of ASHA School,Lucknow, son of Dr BS Sekhon an Indian Air Force officer, won two gold medals, in 300m and 500m Roller Skating in the Special Olympics World Games on JULY 31,2015.
- He was coached and selected for various camps at State and National level as one amongst the 241 participants representing India.

Igniting minds: Kalam’s books fly off the shelves
After the PASSING AWAY of “People’s President” APJ ABDUL KALAM on July 27.He is igniting in the minds of every people.This is seen as APJ Abdul Kalam’s books are flying off the shelves, say book sellers, with the former president’s autobiography, Wings of Fire, emerging as the top seller online.
- Spokesperson for Amazon India said that over the past two days WINGS OF FIRE has been the No. 1 best seller on Amazon.in, and it has replaced Amish Tripathi’s latest book, SCION OF IKSHVAKU.
- All the books authored by Kalam are in demand, with eight of them on the top 20 bestsellers list on online retailer Amazon.
- T Arul Jothi, owner of Annai Book Centre in Chennai, said at least 10 people came to buy both English and Tamil versions of his autobiography.He also added that school and college students have been buying 20-30 books from the store in bulk.
