Jayakanth, a legendary tamil literature novelist, essay and short-story writer died due to prolonged illness on April 8th 2015. He was born in Manjakuppam in Cuddalore in 1934 and finally rested in peace aged 81. He is notable for writing articles which were not inked by other writers.
He was conferred with Jnanpith award (2002) and Sahitya Akademi award. Sahithya Akademi award was awarded to his work named “Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal”. His novels which include Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal, Oru Nadigai Nadagam Paarkiral and Yaarukkaga Azhudhaan were potrayed in films.
His short stories on tamil weekly magazine Ananda Vikatan was trending during the 1960’s. He was a supporter of Communism.

- Other notable awards conferred on him were Soviet Land Nehru Award in1978, Raja Rajan Award in 1986, Padma Bhushan in 2009 first time given to tamil literature, and the Tamil Nadu Government Award in1986.
- Founder of the Indo-Russian Cultural and Friendship Society.
- Order of Friendship award was conferred in 2011 by the Russian Government.
