On November 24, 2020 Indian Railways(IR) collaborated with Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad for a study on ‘An Integrated Coal-Freight Optimization Model’ to increase network throughput and optimize freight transportation over Indian Railways.
Letter of Agreement Exchanged:
i.In this regard, Letter of Agreement (LoA) was exchanged between Shiva Prasad, Principal Chief Operations Manager, South Central Railway (SCR) and Milind Sohoni, Deputy Dean, Indian School of Business.
ii.Exchange was done in the presence of Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, SCR and other senior officials of Railways & ISB at Rail Nilayam, Hyderabad, the zonal headquarters of the South Central Railway zone of the Indian Railway.

- ISB’s scientific analysis explores new avenues for railways to improve freight traffic.
- A good optimization model meets demand-supply variation effectively and enhances overall performance of the network.
Key Info:
i.At present, Coal occupies predominant share in the freight of Indian Railways. The transportation of the commodity also happens through some of the most saturated sections over Indian Railways.
ii.After the introduction of Freight Operations Information System (FOIS), the entire data of freight services is available in digital format.
iii.FOIS can be effectively used for demand estimation and to develop a model to supply the rakes to meet the requirements of the industry.
Other Collaboration of IR and ISB:
- Recently, Indian Railways has partnered with ISB to impart training to railway officials in enhancing managerial skills.
- IR and ISB have also signed a pact to set up the Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics for South Central Railways at Secunderabad, Telangana.
