Dr Harsh Vardhan launched ‘TB Harega Desh Jeetega’ campaign & National TB Prevalence Survey 2019
On September 25, 2019, Union minister for Health and Family Welfare (HFW) Dr Harsh Vardhan launched ‘TB Harega Desh Jeetega’ campaign & National TB Prevalence Survey 2019 in New Delhi
i. He flagged off a van for the National TB Prevalence Survey 2019 (25 vans will be part of the survey for 6 months) and unveiled TB India Report (2019)
ii. 21.5 lakh TB cases were reported in 2018 compared to 18 lakhs in 2017 (increase of 17%). Notifications from private sector health care providers stood at 5.4 lakhs, an increase of 40%, contributing to 25% of all TB notifications………………………..Click here to Read more

Government reconstitutes EAC-PM till 2021
On September 25, 2019, Union Government reconstituted the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) for a period of 2 years with effect from September 26, 2019. Dr. Bibek Debroy will continue as Chairman and Mr Ratan P. Watal will continue as the Member Secretary. These are the 2 full time members.
Key Points:
i. The strength of the EAC-PM was reduced to 4 from 5, with 2 full-time members and 2 part-time members.
ii. Part-Time Members: Dr Sajjid Chinoy, Indian economist at JP Morgan is the new part-time member and Ashima Goel of Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) will continue to be the Part-Time Member.
iii. Rathin Roy from the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and Shamika Ravi of Brookings Institution were dropped as part-time members.
iv. The EAC-PM was revived in September 2017 with a term of two years and it has submitted papers on issues like employment, fiscal situation, economic growth, manufacturing and infrastructure to the Prime Minister’s office (PMO).
About EAC-PM:
It is a non-constitutional, non-permanent and independent body constituted to give economic advice to the Government of India, specifically the Prime Minister on key economic issues like inflation, microfinance, and industrial output.

47th CSMC approves construction of 1.23 lakh houses with an overall investment of Rs. 4,988 cr under PMAY-U
The 47th Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) headed by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Durga Shanker Mishra approved 630 proposals from participating states for the construction of 1.23 lakh houses with an overall investment of Rs. 4,988 cr under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana– Urban (PMAY-U). With this, cumulative sanctions of houses under PMAY(U) crossed 90 lakh houses against the validated demand of 1.12 crore.47th CSMC approves construction of 1.23 lakh houses Key Points:
i. Participating states: 10 states namely West Bengal for 27,746 houses, Tamil Nadu for 26,709, Gujarat for 20,903, Punjab for 10,332, Chhattisgarh for 10,079, Jharkhand for 8,674, Madhya Pradesh for 8,314, Karnataka for 5,021, Rajasthan for 2,822 and  Uttarakhand for 2,501 houses had participated in the meeting.
ii. The union government will provide the assistance worth Rs. 1,805 cr.
iii. The overall investment approved till date is Rs. 5.54 lakh crore (Rs. 3.01 lakh crore from Central and State Governments & Rs. 2.53 lakh crore from private investment)
iv. Out of the Rs. 1.43 lakh crore committed by the union government, Rs. 57,758 crore has already been released.
v. The government aspires to achieve the target of ‘Housing for All’ in 2020, two years before the deadline of 2022.
About PMAY:
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is an initiative by the Government of India in which affordable housing will be provided to the urban poor with a target of building 20 million affordable houses by 31 March 2022. It has two components: Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) (PMAY-U) for the urban poor and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) (PMAY-G or PMAY-R) for the rural poor.

16th Global SME Business Summit for 2019 held in New Delhi
The 16th Global SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) Business Summit for 2019 was held in New Delhi under the theme “Making Indian MSMEs Globally Competitive” on September 24-25, 2019. The summit organized by Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) was inaugurated by union minister for MSME and Road Transport & Highways Mr Nitin Gadkari in the presence of Arun Kumar Panda, Secretary, MSME and others.16th Global SME Business Summit for 2019 Key Points:
i. It was attended by more than 500 delegates from over 15 countries.
ii. The target of the government is to increase MSME’s share of 29% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) to 50% in the next 5 years and raise its export contribution from 49% to 60%.
iii. Rooftop solar plants will be provided to MSMEs with support from KfW, a German state-owned development bank and government is engaged in talks with Asian Development Bank (ADB), KfW and World Bank for their credit line.
iv. A new E-Commerce website ‘Bharat Mart’ will be launched to enable MSMEs to sell their products in the domestic and international markets.
v. Workshops on Trade through E-Commerce Digitization, Country Sessions, Regional Sessions and B2B (business-to-business) meetings were also held.

Tripartite step on Rohingya return agreed by Bangladesh, Myanmar and China
On September 26, 2019, A tripartite mechanism to monitor and assess on-the-ground repatriation process of the displaced Rohingya people to Myanmar was jointly agreed by the nations of Bangladesh, Myanmar and China.
Key points:
i.
The proposal for the formation tripartite group was placed by China,Myanmar and Bangladesh already have a joint working group signed November 2017 for return of the Rohingyas and China is only helping in implementing the agreements taken by two countries.
ii. In October 2019, tripartite group (which consists of the Chinese and Myanmar ambassadors in Dhaka and a director general from the Bangladesh foreign ministry) will hold its first meeting.
iii. 7 lakh 50 thousand refugees mostly women, children, and aged people, entered in Bangladesh  after the Myanmar government rapids the process of ethnic cleansing in 2016 & 2017, and Rohingya were forced to cross the border into Bangladesh beginning from August 25, 2017.

On September 25, 2019, In order to promote vigilance awareness,the Punjab National Bank(PNB) has introduced 1st of its kind Preventive Vigilance (PV) portal to facilitate all staff members to contribute towards arresting procedural lapses and unhealthy practices at a function held at PNB Corporate Office, chaired by Sharad Kumar,Central Vigilance Commissioner.

Airtel payments bank joins hands with HDFC ERGO to offer mosquito-borne diseases protection policy
On September 26, 2019, India’s first Payments Bank, the Airtel Payments Bank has joined hands with India’s leading private sector general insurance company, HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company to offer unique Mosquito Diseases Protection Policy (MDPP) to protect against mosquito-borne diseases.
Key points:
i.
This partnership aims to contribute to the financial inclusion of the country through the strong distribution network of Airtel Payments Bank and strong innovation of HDFC ERGO (Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd).
ii. The MDPP will provide cover on 7 common mosquito-borne diseases, including Dengue, Malaria, Chikungunya, Japanese Encephalitis, Kala-azar, Lymphatic Filariasis (Elephantiasis) and Zika virus. The product, which is part of HDFC Ergo’s ‘wallet insurance portfolio’, will be offered to Airtel Payments Bank remittance consumers at a nominal premium of Rs 99 per year.
iii. At present, the policy available to over 40 lakh remittance customers of Airtel Payments Bank. This segment of consumers consists mostly of migrant workers, who are usually the sole earners of the family.
iv. This pocket-friendly product is quite different in the insurance industry, being the only policy that provides the insured with the benefit of the sum assured even when hospitalized for 24 hours for treatment.

Hyundai motor signs agreement with BoB for vehicle finance
On September 25, 2019, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has signed an agreement with Bank of Baroda (BoB) to provide preferred financing to its dealers and consumers. Under this partnership, BoB will create a detailed financing structure (as per its existing product program of supply chain finance)  for customers and dealers, which will help the bank expand its presence in the Hyundai Motor India Limited network.

UNCTAD estimates India’s economic growth rate at a 7-year low of 6% in CY 2019 from 7.4% in 2018
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in its Trade and Development Report 2019 forecasted India’s economic growth rate at a 7-year low of 6% in calendar year (CY) 2019 from 7.4% in 2018.UNCTAD estimates India’s economic growthKey Points:

The estimates were reduced due to sharp fall of growth to 5.8% in the first quarter of CY19, the risk of shadow banking in countries such as India and China, lower-than-targeted tax collections and limited public spending. But still, India’s economy to be world’s 2nd fastest growing at 6% and China is first.
ii. It also expressed concerns over Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and suggested that it needs to rebuild multilateralism around the idea of a ‘Global Green New Deal’.

As per the report, “BrandZ Top 75 Most Valuable Indian Brands 2019 ranking” released by  WPP and Kantar Millward Brown, HDFC Bank (Housing Development Finance Corporation Limited) was declared the country’s most valuable brand for the sixth consecutive year with the brand value of $ 22.70 billion (1.61 lakh crore rupees). LIC ( Life Insurance Corporation of India) stood at number two with a brand value of Rs 1.43 lakh crore.Key points:

The aggregate value of the top 75 brands rose to $228.2 billion, increasing at a moderate 6 % against 2018, far slower than 34 % recorded in 2017.

Kristalina Georgieva is the IMF’s new chief, becomes 2nd woman to get the post
Bulgaria’s economist Kristalina Georgieva (66) has been elected as the new head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She will be the second woman chief of the 189-member IMF & will take over as Managing Director of the IMF on October 1, 2019. World’s biggest transport spaceship Kounotori8 launched by Japan
On September 25, 2019, Japan’s unmanned H-2B rocket lifted off with cargo vessel Kounotori8 also known as HTV 8 towards the International Space Station (ISS) from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA) Tanegashima Space Center in southwestern Japan, which is considered as the world’s biggest transport spaceship. OBITUARY

An American television producer & a 4-time Emmy Award winner J. Michael Mendel passed away in Los Angeles, US
Michael Mendel, an American television producer & a four-time Emmy Award winner for his work on The Simpsons and Rick and Morty has passed away at his home in Los Angeles from natural causes. He was 54.i. Born on September 24, 1964, he joined ‘The Simpsons’ in 1989, where he produced shows such as The PJs, The Oblongs, Drawn Together, Sit Down, Shut Up, and Napoleon Dynamite.
ii. He won three Emmys in 1995, 1997, and 1998 for “Lisa’s Wedding”, “Homer’s Phobia”, and “Trash of the Titans”. He joined Rick and Morty in 2013, where he won his 4th Emmy Award for the episode “Pickle Rick” in 2018.

Former French president Jacques Rene Chirac passed away at the age of 86
On September 26, 2019, A two-term (1995-2007) French president Jacques René Chirac, aged 86, passed away in Paris, France. Born 29 November 1932 in Paris, he was the first leader to accept France’s role in the Holocaust (World War II genocide) and opposed the United States invasion on Iraq in 2003.i. Nicknamed as “Le Bulldozer”, he also served as the Prime Minister of France, Mayor of Paris, President of Rally for the Republic, Minister of the Interior, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Minister for Parliamentary Relations of France, President of the Corrèze General Council and also served in the military.
ii. He has won many National and Foreign honours, Ig Nobel prize for peace (1996) and State Prize of the Russian Federation (2007).

World Environmental Health Day (WEHD) was observed on September 26, 2019 under the theme “Climate change challenges, time for global Environmental Health to act in unison”. The day was declared by the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) to review environmental health issues and take appropriate actions. World Maritime Day 2019 observed on September 26
World Maritime Day (WMD), which is usually held on the last Thursday of September, was observed on September 26, 2019. It stresses the importance of safety, maritime security, and marine environment and marks the contribution of international maritime industries towards the economy of the world. The theme for WMD 2019 is “Empowering women in the maritime community” which emphasizes gender equality in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs- Goal 5).
i. WMD was first observed in 1978 and it also marks the date of adaptation of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Convention in 1958.
ii. London, United Kingdom-based IMO is a United Nations specialized agency responsible for the safety and security of shipping and prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships.

World contraception day observed on 26 September, 2019
On 26th September 2019, World contraception day was observed throughout the world to create awareness about the contraceptive methods available and enable the young people to make informed decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health.

This day was first observed in the year 2007.
ii. There are different methods of contraception, including Long-acting reversible contraception, such as the implant or intrauterine device (IUD), Hormonal contraception, such the pill or Depo Provera injection, Emergency contraception, Fertility awareness, and  Permanent contraception such as vasectomy and tubal ligation.

CM of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal launched Mukhyamantri Kirayedar Bijli Meter Yojana 
On September 25, 2019, Chief Minister (CM) of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal notified the launch of Mukhyamantri Kirayedar Bijli Meter Yojana under which tenants residing in Delhi will be able to avail power subsidy. They will get a separate power meter.
Key Points:
i. Through this new scheme, tenants will get a prepaid meter using 2 documents – rent agreement or rent receipt and current address proof. They will have to deposit security money of Rs 3,000.
ii. The meters will be delivered to their respective houses by calling the helpline numbers of power distribution companies – 19122 for BSES (Bombay Suburban Electric Supply) Yamuna, 19123 for BSES Rajdhani and 19124 for Tata Power.
iii. Under the existing power subsidy scheme in Delhi, public are not required to pay bills for the electricity consumption of up to 200 units and 50% subsidy is given on bills for power consumption between 201 units and 400 units.

Madhya Pradesh government launched a month long “Swachhata hi Seva Abhiyan” 
On September 25, 2019, The government of Madhya Pradesh launched a month-long “Swachhata hi Seva Abhiyan” against the single-use plastic which will be observed till October 25, 2019. It will also coincide with the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Key Points:
i. It has an aim to administer oath to at least 50 lakh citizens against the use of single-use plastic and targets to reach 2 crore urban population.
ii. In order to collect waste, a total 2000 km long plog run will be organised in 378 cities of the state. The campaign will also emphasize on the establishment of utensil banks in the state.

Rs.6000 rupees will be given annually to women suffering from triple talaq: UP Govt.
On September 25, 2019, Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government led by its Chief Minister (CM) Yogi Adityanath will provide an annual assistance of Rs. 6,000 to the  triple talaq victims till their rehabilitation and also they will get free legal aid.
Key points:
i
. Apart from this, they will also be given affordable housing, their children’s education, government jobs as per their qualifications, scholarship and health cover under Ayushman Yojana or under the Chief Minister Arogya Scheme. Special plans will be made for the welfare of such women.
ii. As many as 300 women from across the UP state attended the event,where Adityanath interacted with the victims of triple talaq under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK).
Triple Talaq:
It is a personal practice followed by Muslim communities in the country as a form of divorce wherein a man can unilaterally and arbitrarily end his marriage by merely pronouncing the word Talaq thrice. The man pronouncing the divorce may deliver it through a letter, text message, email or even through a video recording.

Telugu film comedian Venu madhav passes away in Secunderabad, Telangana
Venu Madhav, an Indian Telugu film actor, television presenter, mimicry artist, and comedian has passed away in a corporate hospital in Secunderabad, Telangana after suffering from liver and renal related ailment. He was 50.Telugu film comedian Venu madhavi. Born on 30 December 1979, Kodad, Telangana, he was best known for his comic roles in over 600 films.
ii. Mimicry artist-turned-comedian, Venu has received the state Nandi Award for Best Male Comedian for his work in Lakshmi in 2006.
iii. He got his credit with movie Sampradayam in 1996 and was last seen in 2016’s film Dr. Paramanandaiah Students Gang.
iv. He is one of the finest comedians &  is remembered for some of his comic roles in Master (1997), and Tholi Prema (1998).
