Central Government approved to set up DSRA
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved to set up the Defence Space Research Agency (DSRA), a new agency which will develop sophisticated weapon systems and technologies. It will enhance the capabilities of the armed forces to fight wars in space.

Defence Space Research AgencyKey Points:
i. The agency will consist of a team of scientists. They will work in close coordination with the tri-services integrated defence staff officers.
ii. It will provide research and development support to Defence Space Agency (DSA).
iii. DSA is being set up in Bengaluru, Karnataka under an Air Vice Marshal-rank Officer. It will eventually take over the space-related capabilities of the three forces namely Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force.
iv. Central government has set up agencies to tackle space and cyber warfare along with Special Operations Division to address the need for special operations required to be carried out in India and abroad.
About CCS:
It is the final decision-making body on senior appointments in the national security apparatus, defence policy and expenditure, and generally all matters of India’s national security. It is chaired by the Prime Minister of India and includes Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Defence, Minister of External Affairs and Minister of Finance.

Central India got its First Sikh Museum in Raipur, Chhattisgarh
On June 7, 2019, Central India got its First Sikh Museum in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The museum Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Sikh Museum is located at Gurudwara Gurusingh Sabha in Guru Nanak Nagar. It was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Bagel on the ‘Shahidi Divas’ of the fifth Sikh Guru, Arjun Dev.

Japan will invest Rs 13,000 crore in North-East in infrastructure projects
On June 12, 019, The Government of Japan has decided to invest an amount of 205.784 billion Yen, nearly Rs 13,000 crore in several ongoing as well as new infrastructure projects in the North-East Region. This was announced after a meeting of Development of North-East Region (DoNER) Minister Dr Jitendra Singh with the Japanese delegation led by Ambassador Mr Kenji Hiramatsu.

Japan will invest in projects like Guwahati Water Supply Project and Guwahati Sewage Project in Assam, Northeast Road Network Connectivity Improvement Project spread over Assam and Meghalaya, Northeast Network Connectivity Improvement Project in Meghalaya, Biodiversity Conservation and Forest Management Project in Sikkim, Sustainable Forest Management Project in Tripura, Technical Cooperation Project for Sustainable Agriculture & Irrigation in Mizoram, Forest Management Project in Nagaland.
ii. The contributions of Japan in the development and transformation of the North-East in the last 3-4 years were appreciated by the Minister of DoNER.

‘E-Governance Initiatives for ST Welfare Schemes’ launched by Shri Arjun Munda, Union Minister for Tribal Affairs
On June 12, 2019, the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri Arjun Munda launched “E-governance initiatives for ST Welfare schemes” at a function organized by Ministry of Tribal Affairs in presence of Smt. Renuka Singh Saruta, Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Ms. Anusuiya Uikey, Vice Chairperson of National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), Shri Ramesh Chand Meena, Chairperson of The Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) and Shri Deepak Khandekar, Secretary, Minister of Tribal Affairs.

E-Governance Initiatives for ST Welfare SchemesKey Points:
i. e-governance initiatives will work for the betterment of tribal communities across the nation.
ii. The Ministry has developed 2 online portals namely DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) Tribal (https://dbttribal.gov.in/) and NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) Grants Online Application & Tracking System (https://ngograntsmota.gov.in/) to ensure e-Governance in the implementation of welfare schemes for Scheduled Tribes (STs).
iii. There are 3 main modules in DBT Tribal portal for Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarship. Data Sharing module is mainly meant for sharing beneficiary-data by States. In Communication module, the States have facility to upload documents and raise query. DBT data uploaded by States is used for faster release of funds. Monitoring module has facility of Management Information System (MIS) reports & Dashboards.
iv. Under Fellowship scheme and Grievance Module, it has also developed a module for verification of students by Universities and Colleges for all stakeholders including beneficiary students in 3 Central Sector schemes and Institutions.
v. The NGO portal is developed to implement the scheme of Aid to Voluntary Organizations working for the welfare of STs.
vi. It is fully revamped and redesigned with simplified Application form, Inspection Report and Fund Processing module and has been re-opened for FY 2019-20 for NGOs and States for online application.

El Salvador Legislative Assembly Declares “Forests as Living Entities”
The Legislative Assembly of  El Salvador has recognized forests as living entities on the World Environment Day (5th June 2019). Its citizens will now be required to preserve forests and respect them as more than just property.

. Since the 1960s, El Salvador has lost about 85% of its native forests and the planet as a whole has lost about 80 percent of its native forests.
ii. A coalition in El Salvador named “Yes for the Rights of Nature(Sí por los Derechos de la Naturaleza), has environmentalists and social leaders called for recognizing forests as living entities.

India designated as guest country at Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico
India has been designated as the guest country in the 33rd Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara (Guadalajara International Book Fair), in Mexico. The nodal agency, under the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, claimed it to be the largest book fair in the Spanish speaking world.
i. The fair will be organised from 30th November to 8th December 2019.
ii. Indian Pavilion will showcase the Ancient and rare manuscripts including “Mahabharata” and “Ramayana” along with photo books, handicrafts, and paintings in the event.
iii. The exhibition will also feature art by 40 renowned Indian women artists including Arpana Caur, Paula Sengupta, and Seema Kohli. At the same time another event, titled “Festival of India” will showcase folk, classical and contemporary cultural programmes.
iv. Indian films like “Dangal”, “Chennai Express” and “Omkara” will also be featured in the film festival that will be organised at the Mexico International Book Fair.

PM Modi to attend the G7 Summit in France as a special invitee
French President, Emmanuel Macron has invited Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi to attend the 45th session of the G7 Summit in Biarritz in France as a special invitee. The summit of the G7 group of countries scheduled to take place from August 24 to August 26.

IDBI Bank and Max Bupa sign Bancassurance corporate agency agreement
On June 1, 2019, Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) Bank and Max Bupa, a Standalone Health Insurer (SAHI) signed a Bancassurance corporate agency agreement. For the first time, IDBI Bank became an on-boarded corporate agent for Max Bupa under open architecture.

  • It will also install ‘Infinity’, a proprietary digital platform. Through this, the customers of IDBI Bank can purchase the product of their choice instantly and access their policy documents at the bank branch.

A penalty of Rs.11.25 lakh imposed on ZipCash, Yes Bank by RBI
On June 12, 2019, The Reserve Bank of India slapped a monetary penalty Rs. 11.25 lakh each on Private sector lender ‘Yes Bank’ and Online Wallet Service, ’ZipCash Card Services’ for violating PPI (prepaid payment instrument) norms pertaining to issuance and operation of PPIs.
The fine imposed in exercise of powers vested under Section 30 of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, for non-compliance of regulatory guidelines.

SEBI released a discussion paper for informant mechanism related to insider trading
On June 10, 2019, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) released a discussion paper for informant mechanism related to insider trading. The proposed amendments to the SEBI (Prohibition of Insider Trading) Regulations, 2015 will provide absolute confidentiality with appropriate safeguards.

  • Capital market regulator announced that genuine whistleblowers could get monetary reward up to Rs 1 crore as well as amnesty from regulatory action. Monetary reward for an informant would be subject to certain conditions. It  would be in the case where monies disgorged is at least Rs 5 crore.
  • It will be paid from the Investor Protection and Education Fund (IPEF). The total amount of the reward will be 10% of the monies collected but it will not exceed Rs 1 crore or such higher amount as may be specified…………………………………………..Click here to Read more

Noted English Fiction writer Amitav Ghosh (63) received the country’s highest literary honour 54th Jnanpith Award in New Delhi. A 22-year-old civil engineer, Zonel Sougaijam from Imphal east of Manipur was recognized by the social media giant “Facebook” for discovering and reporting a WhatsApp bug that violated the privacy of a user.

On June 11, 2019, seven Indian-origin Australians have been honoured for their outstanding contributions in the field of medicine, music, education and finance in Australia. The winners included three women and four men.

V Ravi Anshuman designated as Part-time Member of SEBI
A recent order issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Government of India notified that V Ravi Anshuman has been designated as a part-time member in the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for the period of three years or until the age of 70. He is currently working as a professor in Indian Institutes of Management, Bangalore.

On June 12, 2019, Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, AVSM (Ati Vishisht Seva Medal), NM assumed charge as the 7th Commandant of Indian Naval Academy (INA). He succeeded Vice Admiral RB Pandit, AVSM, who completed his tenure of over 15 months (Assumed charge on February 19, 2018).

On the event of Student Visa Day (June 12, 2019), an event that celebrates higher education ties between India and the United States, the American Embassy has launched an app named “Education USA” to help Indian students who wish to study in the US (United States) Universities.

For first time, scientists created groundwater maps meeting ocean
For the first time, Researchers at Ohio State University have created high-resolution maps of points around the globe where groundwater meets the oceans. It gives important data points to communities and conservationists to help protect drinking water and the seas.
Key Points:
i. The study was published in the Journal “Geophysical Research Letters” on June 3, 2019.
ii. The team of Ohio State University worked with researchers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of Saskatchewan in the research.
iii. The study found that nearly half of fresh submarine groundwater discharge flows into the ocean near the tropics. The areas around the San Andreas Fault in California sends greater volumes of groundwater into the ocean than regions that are tectonically stable.

ENVIRONMENT

596 new species include 224 of plants and 372 of animals discovered from India in 2018
Botanical Survey of India (BSI) and the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have published the details about documented 596 new species of flora and fauna from India in Plant Discoveries 2018 and Animal Discoveries 2018.
i. Scientists and taxonomists have documented 372 new species of fauna (animals) which include 311 invertebrates and 61 vertebrates, and 224 new species of flora (plants) including seed plants, pteridophytes, bryophytes, fungi, and lichen.
ii. Kerala recorded the highest number of discoveries with 59 species. Similarly, West Bengal recorded 38 and Tamil Nadu recorded 26.
iii. According to the discovery of 596 new species, 31% of the plant species found in the Himalayas and the Western Ghats was the hotspot for 50% of the animal species.

Two new species of ‘tweezer-beaked hopping rats’ discovered in Philippines
Researchers from the University of Utah or Utah Natural History Museum, the University of Kansas, the University of the Philippines, and Louisiana State University have discovered two new species of the tweezer-beaked hopping rats or ‘shrew-rats on mountains in the Philippines’ island of Luzon.  The study was published in the Journal of Mammalogy.
i. The new species are named Rhynchomys labo (Labo shrew-rat) and Rhynchomys mingan (Mingan shrew-rat ). Rhynchomys is a genus name where the term “rhyncos” is for snout and “mys” for “mouse.

Scientists discovered new species of ‘paddy frog’ from Northeast India
Scientists from Delhi University and the Wildlife Institute of India along with researchers from Indonesia and the US found a new species of ‘paddy frog’ from Northeast India, primarily Cachar district of Assam. The study was published in PeerJ, a peer-reviewed journal.
i. The new species of ‘paddy frog’ has been named ‘aishani’ or aisani, means Northeast in Sanskrit. Its scientific name is Micryletta aishani.
About Paddy Frogs
The frog belongs to the microhylid genus Micryletta, a “group of narrow-mouthed frogs that is primarily and widely distributed in Southeast Asia, more commonly known as paddy frogs”. This is the first known species of this genus hailed from Sumatra Island in Indonesia. As of now, there are only 4 recognised species in this group.

Jemimah Rodrigues becomes third player from India to feature in Kia Super League
Young cricketer of India, Jemimah Rodrigues has become the third Indian woman cricket player to feature in Kia Super League (KSL) after Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur. She will play in the fourth and final edition of the KSL.

Sourav Kothari wins 2019 Pacific International Snooker Championship
Indian billiards player Sourav Kothari won the 2019 Pacific International Snooker Championship, held in the Reventon Classic, in Melbourne, Australia. He defeated Tyson Crinis of Australia to win the title.

OBITUARY

Veteran journalist and former BJP MP Rajanath Singh ‘Surya’ passed away in Lucknow
On June 13, 2019, Veteran journalist and former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) Rajanath Singh ‘Surya’ passed away at his Gomtinagar residence in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh after a brief illness. He was 82.
i. Before his death, he had expressed his desire to donate his body to the King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, so the body was handed over to KGMU authorities by his family.
ii. He was a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader, a well-known journalist and columnist in Hindi journalism and had worked in various newspapers.
iii. Born in Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh on May 8, 1937, Singh became a Rajya Sabha MP in November 1996 and retired in November 2002.
iv. He started his career in journalism with the Hindusthan Samachar, a multilingual news agency based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
v. He has served as the bureau chief of Aaj newspaper. He was the Assistant Editor of Dainik Jagran in 1988 and has also served as the editor of Swatantra Bharat newspaper.

Renowned Indian-origin writer Ahmed Essop passes away
Noted author and former educationist of Indian origin, Ahmed Essop has passed away in South Africa, at the age of 88. He was born in India in 1931 then emigrated to South Africa.
Key points:
i. His 1978 book ‘The Haji and other Short Stories’ received the Olive Schreiner Award in 1979.
ii. Ahmed Essop is the author of several publications. His works were published by Staffrider and Raven Press
iii. He received the Lifetime Achievement Literary Award in 2018 at the annual South Africa Literary Awards.

International Albinism Awareness Day 2019 observed on June 13
On June 13, 2019, International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) was observed. The day is observed to preserve the rights of persons with albinism and take efforts to ensure equal access for them in employment, education, justice, and good health. The theme for 2019 is “Still Standing Strong”.

i. On December 18, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/69/170 to observe June 13 as International Albinism Awareness Day with effect from 2015.
ii. Albinism is a genetic condition that causes very little or no pigmentation in the skin, hair, and eyes.
iii. The symptoms of Albinism are absence of color in the hair, skin, or eyes, lighter than normal coloring of the hair, skin, or eyes and patches on skin that have an absence of color. It is accompanied by a number of vision defects including nystagmus, amblyopia and photophobia.

UP Cabinet approved key decisions
On June 11, 2019. The cabinet meeting of Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government approved several key decisions. The following decisions were made:
i. The Senior Citizen pension was hiked by the Government. For the citizens between the age of 60 to 79, it was hiked from Rs 400 to Rs 500 per month. The pension for people over 79 years of age was already Rs 500.
ii. It permitted to allow micro-breweries in state and necessary amendment in the rule was done. License fee was increased and a capacity of 2.1 lakh litre of production is allowed in a year.
iii. Age limit of Post Graduate Institute (PGI) doctors was increased by two years. It is now 37 years from 35 years. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is under construction in Raebareli and will be completed by 2020.
