Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs pairs up 20 best performing smart cities with poorly performing 20 cities
On February 10, 2020, The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has paired up the 20 best performing cities with the 20 bottom cities. The top 20 smart cities of the country will work as “sister city” & tasked to help make the most backward 20 smart cities.Under the mission, 100 selected smart cities have identified 5151 projects worth Rs 2,05,018 crore to be executed.
Key Points:
i.As per the  internal rankings, 20 best performing cities are – Ahmedabad, Varanasi, Ranchi, Udaipur, Nagpur, Bhopal, Surat, Kanpur, Visakhapatnam, Vellore, Tiruppur, Vadodara, Nashik, Agra, Dehradun, Davanagere, Kota, Pune, Indore, and Amravati.
ii.20-20 formula: Under this formula, Varanasi has been paired with another holy city Amritsar.So now, Varanasi will help Amritsar to improve its performance under the smart cities mission. On the other hand, Surat and Visakhapatnam will help Sharanpur and Diu to improve their performance respectively. Bhopal has been tasked to share its ideas with Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital city.
These Sister Cities have been given the challenge to improve its performance in 100 days.
iii.The pair of sister cities required to ink an MoU (memorandum of understanding) before February 20,2020 to check fastest execution of projects and report compliance to the Smart Cities Mission Directorate.

It was launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban affairs in 2015 with the objective to develop 100 smart cities across the country by 2022 making them citizen-friendly and sustainable & also to promote sustainable and inclusive cities that provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality of life to its citizens.

An 18-day Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Campaign begins across India to promote cultural unity
On February 10, 2020,An 18-day long  “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Campaign”has has commenced across India with the aim of bringing various states into the thread of cultural unity.
The campaign is being organised by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, till 28th February 2020.
About Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat:
i.The basic objective of this initiative of the government is to foster mutual interplay among the people of different states by bridging the cultural differences prevailing in the country, which will eventually become an important factor in the strength and unity of the nation.
ii.Under this program, every year one state will choose another state for the promotion of its culture and tourism and the interaction between the two states will be increased by various means(language, literature, cuisine, festivals, cultural events, and tourism).
iii.This year, the current pairings will continue till June 2020. After the creation of union territory of Ladakh, it has been paired along with Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) with Tamil Nadu. Punjab has been paired with Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand with Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh with Kerala, Delhi with Sikkim, and Rajasthan with Assam.

4th EAS conference on maritime security cooperation 2020 held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu
A 2-day long 4th edition of EAS (East Asia Summit) Conference on Maritime Security Cooperation 2020 was held in Chennai , Tamil Nadu (TN) from February 6-7 2020. The conference was jointly organised by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India (GoI) in association with the governments of Australia and Indonesia.
Key Points:
i.The knowledge partners of the Conference include National Maritime Foundation (NMF) and the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS).
ii.It saw the participation of about 50 delegates from all the EAS partners (18 members) to discuss on host of issues of maritime security cooperation under five thematic sessions; namely Holistic Maritime Security, Maritime Safety, Transition to a Regional Blue Economy, India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans’ Initiative and the Way Forward & provided a better suggestions on handling challenges in the maritime domain in a cooperative manner.
iii.The previous 3 editions of the EAS Maritime Security Conferences organised by the Indian government were held at New Delhi in November 2015, Goa in November 2016 and Bhubaneswar in June 2018.​

It is the Indo-Pacific’s premier forum for strategic dialogue.
It has 18 members – the 10 ASEAN- Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) along with Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the United States and Russia.

BBIN Nations deliberated on MoU to implement Motor Vehicles Agreement (MVA)
On February 8,2020 BBIN(Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal) member nations discussed the proposed MoU (Member of Understanding) to implement Motor Vehicle Agreement (MVA) for regulation of the passenger, personal & cargo vehicular traffic among the countries.
The meeting was held in New Delhi, India, to discuss the cargo protocols that give effect to MVA among BBIN nations, in which agreement signed on June 15, 2015.
Key Points:
i.Representatives of Bhutan participated in the observer category and the agreement was delayed due to Bhutan’s approval.
ii.The importance of trade, economic co-operation,people-to-people contact through enhanced regional connectivity, including through facilitation of regional cross-border road transport were discussed in the meeting.
iii.The Bangladesh delegation was led by Mohammad Sarwar Mahmood, Director General (South Asia), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Nepalese delegation was led by Gopal Prasad Sigdel, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport.
iv.The Indian delegation was led by Vikram Doraiswami, Additional Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) & the Bhutanese observer team was led by Pem Tshering, Legal Officer, Ministry of Information and Communications.
v.The next BBIN member nations meeting will be held in May, 2020.
About BBIN:
i.The Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal (BBIN) initiative is a sub regional architecture of countries in Eastern South Asia, a subregion of South Asia.
ii.BBIN meeting will be held by official representation of member states to formulate, implement & review of agreements in areas such as water resource management , connectivity of power, transport and infrastructure.
iii.Founded- 14 May 1977.

Tripura’s 1st Hornbill festival was celebrated in Tripura on Feb 8, 2020
On February 8,2020 The Hornbill festival was celebrated in Tripura, Agartala. Chief Minister (CM) Biplab Kumar Dev inaugurated the 2 day hornbill festival at Baramura hill (in western tripura).
The festival was celebrated for the 1st time in Tripura.
Aim: The aim of the festival is to raise awareness among people for bird conservation & to boost tourism.
Key Points:
i.About Baramura Hill: The Baramura hill was renamed as “Hathai Kotor” during kokborok Day celebrations on January 19,2020. The Barmura hill is a traditional culture of conserving birds.
ii.The 2 day festival includes technical sessions on conservation of biodiversity in the state, folk dances, skits, dramas on nature conservation.
iii.The Hornbill festival is a celebration held every year from December 1 to 10, in Nagaland, Northeast India. It is also called the ‘Festival of Festivals’.
iv.Arunachal Pradesh & Manipur also started organising Hornbill festival following Nagaland.

GSTN formulates panel to improve IT system
On February 09, 2020, Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN),a non-profit, non-government organization which manages the entire IT (Information Technology) system of the GST portal has formed a consultation committee to give feedback on new functionalities in the GST system and adoption of new information technology (IT) platforms.
Key Points:
i.The committee will have Members including officials from selected states recommended by the GST Council, member secretary of GSTN, representatives from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and industry chambers such as CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) and Assocham, traders body such as Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and professional bodies such as Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, among others.
ii.Terms of Reference (ToR):The panel will provide suggestions related to policy and technology including feedback on major changes that have been brought in the system, suggestions on new functionalities and new paltforms needed, and, tax payers and tax consultants will provide procedures and processes.

Pullela Gopichand -1st Indian to receive International Olympic Committee’s Coaches Lifetime Achievement Award 
On February 08, 2020, Pullela Gopichand, the Chief National coach for the Indian Badminton team has received the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Coaches Lifetime Achievement Award in Male Category of the year 2019 on the 3rd edition of International Olympics Committee Annual Awards, He is the 1st Indian coach to be Honoured with this Lifetime award by the Olympics Committee.
Key points:

i.Gopichand is a former Indian Badminton player, he founded the Gopichand Badminton Academy in 2008 where he trained, players like Saina Nehwal (Bronze medalist in 2012 summer Olympics), P.V. Sindhu, Parupalli Kashyap, Srikanth Kidambi and etc.
ii.Gopichand also served as the Official Coach for the Indian Olympic badminton team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Brazil (where Pusarla Venkata Sindhu won Silver Medal in Badminton).
iii.Awards- Gopichand had received Government of India’s Arjuna award (1999), Rajiv Gandhi khel Ratna (2001), Padma Shri (2005), Dronacharya award (2009) and Padma bhushan (2014).
iv.2020 summer Olympic is going to be held in Tokyo, Japan from (24 July 2020- 9 august) 2020, and the 2022 winter Olympic is going to be held in Beijing, China from (4February -20 February) 2022.

Mumbai’s Kaamya Karthikeyan-Youngest Girl in the World to climb South America’s Highest Peak Mt. Aconcagua
On February 10,2020 Kaamya Karthikeyan, 12 years old, a class 7 student of Navy Children School (NCS) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, became the youngest girl in the world to climb Mt. Aconcagua, Argentina, (highest peak in South America).
Key Points:

i.Mount Aconcagua is the highest peak outside Asia which ranges about 6962 metres.
ii.Kaamya reached the mountain peak on February 1, 2020 and unfurled the Indian tricolour flag.
iii.Achievements: She also climbed Mt.Mentok Kangri II, Ladakh (6,260 meters), on August 24, 2019.
iv.She also reached the Everest Base Camp in Nepal (5,346 metres), Mt. Stok Kangri (6,153 metres) in Ladakh, Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,895 metres), Africa, Mt.Elbrus (5,642 metres), Europe & Mt. Kosciuszko (2,228 metres), Australia.
v.By 2021, she aims to complete “Explorers Grand Slam”.
vi.About Explorers Grand Slam: It is an adventurer goal to reach North Pole & South Pole, and to climb 7 highest peaks in the world (Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro, Vinson and 2 other chosen highest mountain peaks chosen by the designates).

23rd National conference on e-Governance 2020 held in Mumbai, Maharashtra; NAeG 2019-20 awards presentedA 2-day long 23rd edition of National Conference on e-Governance 2020 based on the theme “India 2020: Digital Transformation” with 6-sub themes was held at Mumbai, Maharashtra from February 7-8 2020.

The Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Dr Jitendra Singh and Maharashtra IT (Information Technology) Minister Satej D Patil was the guests of honour of the conference.
ii.During the event a 10-point Mumbai Declaration on e-Governance was unanimously adopted with the aim to carry the pathway for eGovernance outlined in the Shillong Declaration adopted during the 22nd National Conference on e-Governance (NCeG) held in August 2019.

The farewell function for Prakash was held at the organisation’s 159th board meeting in New Delhi, India.

Indian Army & Private firm developed the World’s Cheapest Gun Shot Locator “Parth”
On February 9,2020 The Indian Army’s College of Military Engineering (CME), Pune, Maharashtra, jointly with a private firm developed gunshot locators named as “Parth”. The device is much cheaper than the imported ones. Major Anoop Mishra displayed the Parth gun shot locator at DefExpo 2020 held in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (UP).
Key Points:
i.Parth gunshot locator costs around Rs 3 lakhs which is less than the imported ones, which costs around Rs 65 lakhs.
ii.The device can locate the exact location of a bullet from a distance of 400m & neutralize terrorists faster.
iii.Major Mishra had developed a bulletproof jacket for protection against sniper bullets & a helmet which is claimed first in the world that can stop AK-47 (Automatic Kalashnikov- 47) bullets from a distance of 10 meters.

Iran unveils new ballistic missile ‘Raad-500’; dedicated to former Major General Qasim Sulemani
On February 9, 2020, In the midst of increased tension with the US(United States), Iran’s Revolutionary Guards has launched a short-range ballistic missile, “Raad-500” .
Key Points:
i.The new missile has a power generation engine ‘Zoheir’ (which is made of alloy) to put the satellite into orbit. Zoheir is lighter than the steel engine built earlier, so it is much easier for the missile to catch fast speed.
ii.Firepower: The Raad-500 missile is half the weight of the previously made Fateh-110 missile, however its firepower is 500 km (200 km more than Fateh-110 missile,which was made public by Iran in the year 2002).
iii.Dedication: The Raad-500 has been dedicated to the former head Quds Force, a unit of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Major General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a drone strike by the US in Baghdad airport on January 3,2020.

Bangladesh won the 13th ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup 2020 defeating India in South Africa
13th edition of 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, an international limited-overs cricket tournament was held in South Africa from 17 January – 9 February 2020. It was administered by International Cricket Council (ICC) & 16 teams participated in the cricket tournament with a total of 48 matches played between the teams.
Winner:
The Finals were held at the JB Marks Oval, Potchefstroom, South Africa between Bangladesh & India. Bangladesh’s youth team defeated India by three wickets in a thrilling match in the final. With this, the Bangladesh team won the under-19 World Cup title for the first time.
i.India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal, was adjudged Player of the tournament, he also scored the highest runs(400 runs) in the tournament.

Australia clinches ICC women’s championship trophy 2020 for the 2nd timeOn February 8, 2020, Australia were awarded the ICC (International Cricket Council) Women’s Championship trophy 2020, which they maintained by winning victories in the eight-team one-day championship between 2017 and 2020.
Key Points:

i.The Australia’s team was led by Meghann Moira Lanning (also known as Meg Lanning), which also won this trophy last time(ie 1st edition 2014–16).
ii.With this, Australia making it to the Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand  2021.
iii.The ICC Women’s Championship has given hosts New Zealand and four top teams a direct place in the World Cup 2021. The remaining teams will play qualifiers through the Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2020 scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka from July 3 – 19,2020.

ITF women’s tennis event 2020 in Thailand: India’s Ankita Raina wins 18th career doubles title
Ankita Ravinderkrishan Raina(27),
an Indian professional tennis player along with her partner Bibiane Schoofs of the Netherlands, won the finals of the ITF (International Tennis Federation )Women’s doubles event against the pair of Miyabi Inoue of Japan and Jia-Qi Kang of China with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 scores held in Nonthaburi, Thailand.
The winner pair, won $ 25,000,earlier clinched their 1st doubles title together in Belgium in 2017.
Key Points:
i.This is the 18th career doubles title for the Ankita in the professional circuit, and the 3rd with Schoofs. She won both singles and doubles titles in Thailand on February 1,2020 with the Dutch player Bibiane Schoofs.

Padma Shri awardee Giriraj Kishore passed away at 83On February 9,2020 Padma Shri awardee & well-known Hindi Novelist Giriraj Kishore passed away at the age of 83 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh (UP).
He was born on 8th July 1937 in Muzaffarnagar, UP.
Key Points:
i.Giriraj Kishore was best known for his novel “Pehla Girmitiya” (for which he received Padma Shri in 2007) and “Dhai Ghar”.
ii.Awards: He was awarded Padma Shri by President of India in 2007, Sahitya Akademi award in 1992, Vyas Samman in 2000 & an honorary Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) from Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University in 2002.
iii.He completed his masters in social work from the Institute of Social Sciences, Agra, UP.
iv.Giriraj worked as registrar of the Indian Institute of Technology(IIT)- Kanpur & assistant registrar of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University.
v.He was a former member of the Sahitya Academy working committee & also the Railway Board of GOI (Government of India).

Famous Philosophical Author & RSS veteran P Parameswaran dies at 93On February 09, 2020, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Veteran, Orator and Philosophical Author P.Parameswaran (93) passed away at Palakkad, Kerala due to age related ailments.
Key points
:

i.Parameswaran was born in Thamarasseril Illam, Muhamma village in Alappuzha district in the year 1927. He established Bharatheeya Vichara Kendram in 1982. He served as editor in magazines Kesari, Manthan, Yuva Bharathi and Vivekananda Kendra patriika. He also served as President of Vivekananda Kendra.
ii.Parameswaran has authored books on Indian Philosophy and society. He has written around 21 books, ‘Marx and Vivekananda: A comparative study’ and ‘From Marx to Maharshi and Bhagavad Gita – Vision of a New World Order’ were popular among them.
iii.Awards: He won Padma Shri in 2004 and Padma Vibhushan in 2018 for Literacy and Education.

About Koneru Ramakrishna Rao:
i.K.Ramakrishna Rao was an Eminent Scholar, Author, Researcher, Scientist and Gandhian, He was born in coastal region in Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The Government of India awarded him The Civilian Honour of Padma Shri in 2011.
ii.Rao currently serving as Chancellor of GITAM (Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management) University Vishakatapatnam, He wrote around 20 Books and 300 Research papers.

National Deworming Day was observed on February 10, 2020On February 10,2020 National Deworming Day (NDD) was observed across the country. The day was organized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).This will be followed by the mop-up day on February 17, 2020.
Key Points:

i.The objective of the day is to deworm children and adolescents to reduce the prevalence of parasitic worms in the intestine.
ii.Children and adolescents in the age group of 1-19 years will be provided single dose of a safe medicine Albendazole in all States and Union Territories (UT).
iii.National Deworming Day (NDD) is observed every year bi-annually on February 10 & August 10 in all states and UT.

World Pulses Day 2020 was observed on February 10, 2020World Pulses Day was observed on Feb 10, 2020. World Pulses day was established by the Food and  Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to recognize the importance of pulses (dry beans, lentils, dry peas, chickpeas, lupins) as global food.
Key Points:

i.World Pulses day has been designated on Feb 10 every year since 2019 by the 73rd session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on December 20, 2018.
ii.The day is celebrated to bring awareness about the nutritional benefits of pulses as part of sustainable food production aimed towards food security and nutrition.
India hosts the UN World Pulses Day celebrations in New Delhi
The event was organized by National Agricultural Cooperative Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED) in collaboration with Global Pulse Confederation (GPC). The Tripura Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Shri. ManojKanti Deb, Global Pulses Confederation Chairperson Ms. Cindy Brown, NAFED Chairman Dr. Bijender Singh and representatives from various countries and officials of Central and State Governments and people associated with pulses production and sales were present in large numbers during the event.
On the occasion, the Minister launched the ‘Family pack of NAFED pulses and NAFED Organic pulses. A NAFED Coffee Table Book, recording its journey since inception on 2nd October, 1958 to the present and an FAO publication “Global Economy of Pulses” were also launched.

Uttarakhand Govt launched First Helicopter Services under UDAN Scheme 
On February 08, 2020, Chief Minister of Uttarkhand Trivendra Singh Rawat along with Shri Pradeep Singh Kharola, Secretary of Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) jointly Inaugurated the 1st ever Helicopter services from Dehradun’s Sahastradhara helipad to Gauchar and from Sahastradhara to Chinyalisaur under the Regional Connectivity Scheme-Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik(RCS-UDAN) of Government of India. The main objective of this Helicopter Services is to Improve the Aerial Connectivity of the Hilly areas in the Country.
Key points:
i.MoCA (Ministry of Civil Aviation) has given the operational rites of the Sahastradhara-Gauchar_Chinyalisaur route to Heritage Aviation private limited under the UDAN 2 bidding process, and Heritage Aviation Will Operate helicopter services twice a day for this route
ii.For Helicopter Services Viability Gap Funding (VGF) is provided under UDAN scheme to keep the Fares Affordable for the Common people and the Uttarkhand state Government is also providing additional Incentives to make the scheme more attractive.
iii.The fare from route will be Rs 4,120 will be the fare per person from Sahastradhara to Gauchar route, and the fare from Sahastradhara to Chinyalisaur will be Rs 3,350 and the Sahastradhara-Gauchar-Chinyalisaur route become 260 operational route under UDAN connectivity scheme.
iv.And in Future Pawan Hans Limited (PHL) is going to conduct the Operational Helicopter Service for the route of Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport- New Tehri, Srinagar-Gauchar.

UDAN 1.0Under this phase 5 airlines companies were the operational services of 128 flight routes of 70 Airports (Including 36 newly made operational Airports)
UDAN 2.0- Under this helipad were also connected under UDAN scheme.
UDAN 3.0- Inclusion of Seaplanes for connecting water Aerodromes, Tourism routes.
UDAN 4.0- Aim to connect priority regions (North Eastern Region, Hilly States, Jammu Kashmir, Ladakh, and Islands) for the Common People
