A 3-day long 17th edition of Bio Asia 2020 begins in Hyderabad, TelanganaOn February 17, 2020, A 3-day long 17th edition of  Bio Asia 2020, Asia’s largest Biotechnology and Life Sciences Forum with the theme of ‘Today for Tomorrow’ has commenced in Hyderabad, Telangana.

1st -ever Global investors summit 2020 will be held in Jammu & Kashmir
The Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir’s (J&K) administration is set to host 1st -ever Global Investors Summit-2020 in the capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu in the month of April 2020 with the aim to attract investment and industries to J&K.
Key Points:
i.As a part of this summit, J&K administration has decided to send 54 of its top officers to conduct roadshows across India from February 17,2020. The roadshows will be held in Bengaluru and Kolkata on 17 February, in Mumbai on 21 February, in Hyderabad on 2 March, in Chennai on 5 March and in Ahmedabad on 9 March focusing on specific sectors to attract investment.
ii.J&K administration has also decided to conduct roadshows at an international level to attract global investors. The preparations are led by chief secretary of the UT of J&K BVR Subrahmanyam with the J&K administration aiming to hold the event as a mega gala summit.
iii.The J&K administration is seeking to attract investments up to a Rs 10,000 Crores including IT(Information Technology), Food processing, biotechnology auto, and textile industries.

CDS to establish 1st Integrated tri-service command “Air Defence Command” by June 2020
On February 15, 2020, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat has targeted to establish the 1st integrated tri-service command called “Air Defence Command (ADC)” by June 2020, headed by an 3 star officer of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Key Points:
i.The ADC formation ,by combining the resources of the three services under one command under the mandate given to the Department of Military Affairs, will help to protect the air space of the country.
ii.The ADC will unify the air defence and assets of the Army, Air Force and Navy and jointly provide air defence cover to the nation.
iii.General Rawat is also working on the creation of a Joint Peninsula Command and a Logistics Command in addition to the theater command.

Manipur: Seed sowing festival ‘Lui-Ngai-Ni’ celebrated at Ukhrul
On February 15, 2020 The Naga tribes of Manipur celebrated seed sowing festival ‘Lui-Ngai-Ni’ at Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) ground in Ukhrul, Manipur. The 2 day festival was inaugurated by N. Kayisii, Manipur’s Minister of Tribal Development while Tamei MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) Awangbou Newmai attended the fest as Guest of Honour.
Theme: “Oneness through Culture”.
Key Points:
i.The event was organised by the United Naga Council and hosted by the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), an apex body of the Tangkhul community in Manipur.
ii.About Lui-Ngai-Ni: Lui-Ngai-Ni is one of the biggest festivals of the Naga community.
iii.Folk songs, blowing Lui-Ngai-Ni, the beating of drums, lighting of fire, cultural dances and solo performances were performed by Naga Tribes during the festival.

Overview of Portugal’s President Mr Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s 4 day(Feb 13-16) visit to India The President of Portugal Mr Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has paid a four days visit to India for the first time from 13-16 February 2020 on the invitation of the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind. 2020 UN Climate Summit ‘COP26′ to be held in Glasgow, UK in NovemberThe 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 26) to the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change ) is scheduled to be held from 9-19 November 2020, at Glasgow’s Scottish Events Campus (SEC)in  Scotland under the presidency of the UK (United Kingdom) government.

UNFCCC, the UN’s climate body, holds an annual summit known as a COP, attended by national ministers and heads of state. All of the world’s nations are ‘parties to the Convention’.
Indian-origin minister Alok Sharma to lead UK’s COP26 summit
Indian-origin Alok Sharma (52) from Agra,Uttar Pradesh(UP) has been appointed as the minister in charge of the UK’s COP26 climate change summit.
i.British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has promoted Alok Sharma to the post of Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in cabinet reshuffle, where he replaced Claire Perry O’Neill, a former energy minister.
Sharma previously served as the secretary of state for international development.

RBI board recommends aligning accounting year with fiscal year from 2020-21
On February 15, 2020, the Central Board of Directors of the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) at its 582nd meeting recommended aligning the financial year of RBI, currently July-June, with the government’s fiscal year (April-March) from the year 2020-21. Now, the proposal is sent to the government for its approval.
Key Points:
i.The meeting reviewed the current economic situation, global and domestic challenges and various areas of operations of the Reserve Bank.
ii.The meeting was addressed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. She was accompanied by Minister of State for Finance Anurag Singh Thakur, Finance Secretary Rajiv Kumar and Expenditure Secretary T V Somanathan, among other senior officials.

Moody’s lowers India’s GDP growth estimate for 2020 to 5.4% from 6.6%
On February 17, 2020, Moody’s Investors Service, an American credit rating agency,has lowered India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth estimate for the current financial year (2019-20) to 5.4% from 6.6% and the next financial year (2020-21) growth rate estimate to 5.8% from 6.7% .
Key Points:
i.According to Moody’s , due to the spread of novel coronavirus outbreak  in China, worldwide growth will be affected and hence India’s economic growth recovery will be slow.
ii.It also estimate that G20 (Group of 20) economies will grow at a rate of 2.4 % in 2020, a sluggish move from 2019 & will be 2.8 per cent in 2021.China’s GDP growth estimated at 5.2 % in 2020 & expected to achieve GDP growth at a rate of 5.7 % in 2021.

NCLAT clears JSW Steel’s acquisition of Bhushan power for Rs 19,700 cr
On February 17, 2020, The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has approved JSW Steel’s (formerly known as Jindal South West ) bid of Rs 19,700 crore for the acquisition of the bankrupt Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd (BPSL).However, the lawsuits filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act,2002 may continue against Bhushan Power’s former promoters.
Key Points:
i.In this context, a two-member bench headed by NCLAT Chairman Justice Sudhansu Jyoti (SJ) Mukhopadhaya has stated that JSW Steel will be relieved from facing litigation for the work done by former promoters of Bhushan Power.
ii.Also, EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) earned by BPSL during its Corporate Insolvency resolution process will also be handed over to JSW Steel.
iii.Background:The ED had attached assets of Rs 4,025 crore to BPSL on October 10, 2019 in connection with its money laundering probe linked to an alleged bank loan fraud by its former promoters. JSW Steel challenged this action in the Appellate Tribunal. The tribunal directed the ED on 14 October to release the attached assets immediately.

ISRO to launch 10 surveillance satellites in 2020-21
On Feb 17, 2020, as per the annual report of the Department of Space, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) is planning to launch 10 earth observation satellites space surveillance feature during 2020-21 including first ever Geo Imaging Satellite GISAT-1.
Key Points:
i.As of now, 10 national earth observation satellites, 18 communication satellites and eight navigation satellites are active.
ii.Apart from above, ISRO has lined up 36 missions consisting of six Earth Observation satellites. It also has plans to add 8 Earth Observation satellites in 2021-22.
iii.For FY20-21, ISRO has been allotted the highest-ever budgetary outlay of Rs 13,480 crore by Union Ministry of Finance.

Kerala CM launched ”Yodhavu” mobile app to combat drug menace
On February 14, 2020 Kerala Chief Minister (CM) Pinarayi Vijayan launched “Yodhav” (Warrior) mobile app (application) at Kochi, Kerala, through which the public can inform police about drug abuse & its distribution.
Key Points:
i.The application was introduced by the Kochi city police and the informer’s identity could be kept secret.
ii.Other Inaugurations:The Kerala CM also inaugurated a modern cyberdom cyber crime police station, new building of the Infopark police station, regional forensic science laboratory’s upper & lower subordinate quarters at TCS (TataConsultancy Services) auditorium, Infopark, Kochi, Kerala.
iii.Pinarayi Vijayan also unveiled the model of a new complex for Kochi city police constructed at Marine Drive, Kochi, Kerala.

Credai launched ‘Credai Awaas’ app to connect homebuyers with developers
On February 15, 2020 CREDAI (The Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India) launched an ‘Credai Awaas’ app (application) to connect homebuyers with its member developers to purchase properties. The app was launched by Mohammad Akbar, Minister of Transport, Housing & Environment, Forest & Law, in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Vivek Dhand, Chhattisgarh RERA chief was also present on the occasion.
Key Points:
i.About Awaas Credai app: The application is an exclusive platform for its members, which will display projects from 220 cities & will have participation from 20000 CREDAI developers nationwide.
ii.The app will facilitate ease of purchase of residential properties by homebuyers.
iii.In January 2020, National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) had also launched its e-commerce platform for marketing of completed residential units.

“United by Emotion” to be 2020 Tokyo Olympics Motto
On February 17, 2020 The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic games revealed the official motto, “United By Emotion”, which reflects the “universal values” and “unifying power of sport”, for the upcoming 2020 Olympics to be held in Tokyo, Japan from July 24, 2020 to August 9, 2020.
The motto highlights the power of sport to bring together people from diverse backgrounds to connect & celebrate in a way that reaches beyond their differences.
Key Points:
i.The official Olympic motto is “Citius, Altius, Fortius” or “Faster, Higher, Stronger”, but each host city chooses its own motto to accompany that edition of the Games.
ii.London’s motto in 2012 was “Inspire a Generation”, whereas Athens in 2004 was “Welcome Home”– a nod to the birthplace of the Game in Olympia.
iii.The Games will bring together athletes from more than 200 National Olympic Committees and the Refugee Olympic Team, as well as millions of spectators & media representatives.

India wins bronze in Badminton Asia team championships 2020 held in Manila, Philippines
Indian men’s team clinched bronze medal at the Badminton Asia team championships 2020 after losing to two-time defending champions Indonesia with 2-3 scores in semi-finals of the tournament held at Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila, Philippines from 11 – 16 February 2020.
This is the 2nd time that India bagged bronze medal in the championship after it won the 1st bronze in 2016 at Hyderabad, Telangana.

i.Members of Indian Team that won bronze medals were Arjun M.R., Subhankar Dey, Dhruv Kapila, Srikanth Kidambi, Prannoy Kumar, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, B. Sai Praneeth, Lakshya Sen, Chirag Shetty.
ii.In the final, Women’s Team, Japan defeated South korea to win gold medal & Indonesia outperforms Malaysia to win the Men’s team gold medal.
iii.The tournament is the Asian qualifiers for the 38th Thomas & 28th Uber Cup 2020 in Aarhus, Denmark from 16 May, 2020 –, 24 May, 2020.
Badminton Asia team championships 2020:
i.
It is also known as the 2020 Smart Badminton Asia Manila Team Championship due to sponsorship reasons.
ii.It was organized by the Badminton Asia with Philippine Badminton Association as host organiser and sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation(BWF).

India’s Koneru Humpy wins Cairns Cup chess tournament 2020 held in United States (US)
On February 17, 2020 Grandmaster Koneru Humpy has won the Cairns Cup Chess tournament held at St.Louis, US (United States). She won the title after finishing 6 points off 9 rounds and a cash prize of $45,000. This was the second edition of the Cairns Cup.With this win, she was ranked 2nd in the recently released chess world ranking.
Key Points:

i.Reigning world champion Ju Wenjun finished with 5.5 points secured 2nd place while Russia’s Alexandra Kosteniuk came 3rd who finished with 5 points followed by Ukranian Mariya Muzychek with 5 points  and India’s Harika Dronavalli secured 5th with 4.5 points.
ii.In 2019, Koneru Humpy won the world rapid chess championship award and defeated China’s Lei Yingjie in the final playoff match.

OBITUARY

Disney’s ‘Queen of Katwe’ child actress Nikita Pearl Waligwa passed away at 15On February 15, 2020 Nikita Pearl Waligwa, a Ugandan student, who played a memorable role in 2016 Disney film “Queen of Katwe” as a local chess prodigy, passed away at the age of 15 in Uganda, Kampala due to brain tumour.
Key Points:

i.Waligwa was studying at Gayaza High School and was known as “darling to many” in the school.
ii.She played the role of Gloria, a younger friend of the main character Phiona Mutesi and taught her how to play chess.
iii.The film conveys the real story of Phiona Mutesi (first female winner of Uganda’s junior chess championships), directed by Mira Nair and filmed in Katwe, a slum in Uganda, Kampala.
iv.”The small one can become the big one” is one of Gloria’s memorable quotes from the “Queen of Katwe”.

American actress Lynn Cohen passes away at 86On February 15, 2020 Lynn Cohen, American actress, best known for playing the role of Magda on “Sex and the City” series, passed away at the age of 86 at New York, US (United States). She was born on 10th August 1933 in Kansas city, Missouri, US.

i.Lynn Cohen reprised her part in the 2 film versions– “Sex & the City” (2008) and “Sex & the city2” (2010) of the HBO (Home Box Office) Series.
ii.She acted in the television shows of “Damages”, “Nurse Jackie”, “The Affair”, “Law & Order” and also featured in guest roles on “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel”, “God Friended Me” and “Master of None”.
iii.She also starred as former Israel Prime Minister (PM) Golda Meir in the Academy Award nominated movie “Munich”, directed by Steven Spielberg and also acted in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, “Across the Universe” & “Vanya on 42nd Street” and her stage roles on Broadway include “Orpheus descending” and “Ivanov”.

Haryana Govt announced Rs 6 crores cash rewards to gold medal winners at Olympics games
On February 16, 2020, The Chief Minister of Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar has announced that the state government will provide Rs. 6 crores for the players who bagged gold medals, Rs. 4 crores for the silver medalist and Rs. 2.5 crores for the bronze medalists at the Olympics Games and also employment in Haryana Civil Service or Haryana Police service to the sportsperson.
Key points:
i.Further he added that Rs. 3 crores and Rs. 1.5 crores will be provided to the players who have won gold medals at the Asian Games and Commonwealth games respectively, and an amount of Rs. 15 lakhs will be given to each player participating in the Olympics Game
ii.The players who represent Haryana state are the only beneficiary for the cash rewards announced by the CM on the occasion of the conclusion of the four-day 46th Junior National Kabaddi Competition.

Ambala city bus stand renamed after late Sushma Swaraj by Haryana Govt
The Haryana Transport Minister Mool Chand Sharma announced that the Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has approved a proposal by Aseem Goel BJP MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) from the Ambala City Constituency requested to change the name of the newly constructed Ambala city Bus stand as Sushma Swaraj (former Union Minister and BJP veteran) bus stand

i.The name of the bus stand will be changed on the birth anniversary (14th February) of the late Union Minister Sushma Swaraj, who was born in Ambala Cantt and elected as MLA twice from the Ambala constituency
ii.The bus stand had been constructed at a cost of Rs. 18 crores, at present Haryana state has 3200 buses and newly 1500 buses will be added including pink buses for girls and Volvo buses.

Punjab to honour cops under ‘Appreciate and Commend’ scheme
On February 16, 2020 Dinkar Gupta, Punjab DGB (Director General of Police), launched the ‘Appreciate and Commend’ scheme in Phillaur, Punjab, in order to boost the confidence of police officers who work extraordinarily and the best cops will be awarded every month.
Key Points:
i.About Appreciate & Commend scheme: Under this scheme, the nominations of the best police will be sought from police chiefs of various districts by the 25th of every month, and these will be screened by a committee consisting of senior police officers and the awardees name would be announced by the 5th of every month.
ii.During the inauguration of the scheme 15 police personnel were awarded for their performance. The awardees included 2 Inspectors, 6 Sub Inspectors, 3 Assistant Sub Inspectors, 1 head constable and 3 constables.
iii.The performance of the cops had been rated based upon action against terrorists & gangsters, the arrest of proclaimed offenders, a large number of NDPS recoveries, property forfeiture in NDPS cases, spreading drug awareness, investigation of sensitive cases, community policing initiatives & police station management.

Uddhav Thackeray approves renaming of Latur Medical College after former CM Vilasrao Deshmukh
On February 16,2020, Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Bal Thackeray has approved the renaming of the Latur Medical College as Vilasrao Deshmukh Institute of Medical Sciences and the proposal was initiated by the former MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) of Latur city, Maharashtra, Mr. Trimbakrao Shrirangrao Bhise.
About Vilasrao Dagadojirao Deshmukh:
i.Vilasrao was a member of the Indian National Congress, he served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for Two times from 1999 to 2003 and from 2004 to 2008 and he also served as Union cabinet Minister for the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Panchayat Raj and Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises of Government of India.
ii.He was born on 26th may 1945 in Babhalgaon, Maharashtra and died on 14th august 2012 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Pole vaulter  Armand Duplantis sets new world record at Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix
A 20-year-old US born Swedish based Pole vaulter Armand Duplantis has broken his own pole vault world record(6.17m) by clearing 6.18 m at the Indoor Grand Prix in Glasgow, Scotland. Prior to that French vaulter Renaud Lavillenie(2014) has set a record of 6.16 m.

India’s female Race Walker Bhawna Jat qualifies for Tokyo Olympics 2020
Rajasthan based female race walker Bhawna Jat has earned a berth in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and also broken  the national record of the 20 km race walk at the 7th National Race Walk Championships in Ranchi.The 23-year-old athlete clocked 1 hour 29 minutes and 54 seconds, well inside the Olympic qualification time(1:31.00).
