PM Modi Inaugurates 2nd Khelo India National Winter Games 2021 in Gulmarg, J&KPM inaugurates 2nd Khelo India National Winter GamesOn February 26, 2021, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the 2nd Edition of Khelo India National Winter Games 2021  in Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). The event will take place from February 26-March 2, 2021.

  • The 2021 edition of Khelo India Winter games is organized by J&K Sports Council & Winter Games Association of J&K under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.
  • It aims to strengthen the resolve for ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshth Bharat’ (One India, One Nation).

Background

  • Khelo India National Winter Games is an annual event and was held for the first time in 2020 in two legs at two different venues (Khelo India Ladakh Winter Games, Leh & Khelo India Jammu and Kashmir Winter Games, Gulmarg).

With support from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, J&K administration aims to improve its ranking from 14 in Top Winter sports destinations in the world to Top-5.

India holds 1st Sherpas meeting after assuming 2021 BRICS ChairshipIndia has kicked off its BRICS ChairshipIndia virtually held the inaugural 3-day long Sherpas meeting from February 24-26, 2021. This is the 1st Sherpas meeting hosted by India after it assumed the 2021 BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) Chairship.  India succeeds Russia as the Chair of BRICS.

  • The meeting was chaired by Sanjay Bhattacharyya, Secretary, CPV and OIA (Consular, Passport & Visa and Overseas Indian Affairs) & P Harish, Additional Secretary, Economic Relations as India’s BRICS Sherpa & Sous Sherpa.
  • Theme for India’s Chairship – ‘BRICS@15: Intra-BRICS Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation and Consensus’.
  • BRICS is celebrating its 15th anniversary. BRIC was formalized in 2006 during the 1st meeting of BRIC Foreign Ministers on the margins of UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) New York, USA. South Africa later joined the grouping in 2010.

Key Points from the meeting:

  • In 2021, New Development Bank’s (NDB) regional offices would be opened in Russia & India & NDB’s membership is also set to be expanded.
  • The main focus of the meeting was Cultural & people-to-people engagement.

  • The 13th BRICS Summit is going to be held under India’s Chairship in 2021.

India’s 1st Undersea Tunnel to come at Mumbai by 2023Mumbai will launch India’s first undersea tunnel in 2023Two undersea tunnels are under construction in Mumbai city, as a part of the 10.58 kms long, Mumbai’s Coastal Road Project. 2 tunnels each 3-3.2 m wide are constructed for 2.07 km long of which one kilometer is constructed under the seabed.
Notably, this is India’s 1st Undersea Tunnel which will come to operation by 2023.
i.Constructed at 20m below the seabed.
ii.Uses 1st of its kind Ventilation system, “Saccardo”.
iii.The tunnel will be connecting North Mumbai with South Mumbai, as a toll-free path easing up traffic.
Some Popular Undersea Tunnels:
The Seikan Tunnel in Japan is the world’s longest undersea tunnel, that lies 140m below the seabed.
The Channel Tunnel connects England with France, lies 75m below the seabed.

India set to emerge as World’s 3rd Biggest Civil Aviation Market by 2024: Union Minister Hardeep Singh PuriIndia will be world's 3rd biggest civil aviation sectorDuring the India Aircraft Leasing Summit-2021, Minister of State (I/C) for Civil Aviation, Hardeep Singh Puri stated that India is set to emerge as World’s 3rd Biggest Civil Aviation Market in overall terms by 2024.
The India Aircraft Leasing Summit 2021 was held at Vigyan Bhavan Convention Centre, New Delhi on February 26, 2021.

  • The theme of the summit was ‘Rupee Raftaar’.
  • Organizers – Ministry of Civil Aviation & IFSC (International Financial Services Centres) Authority in collaboration with GIFT (Gujarat International Finance Tec)- City & FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry).

Growth Potential
In order to keep up with the growth potential of Indian aviation sector, in the next 20 years

  • India needs 1, 750 – 2, 100 aircrafts valued at over INR 20, 40, 000 Crore.
  • Globally, the leasing of aircrafts has increased dramatically from 2% in 1980 to 41% in 2018. It is estimated to reach 50% in 2020.
  • The Civil Aviation Minister highlighted that Aircraft Leasing is the most profitable segment of the Aviation value chain, but at present not even 1 aircraft has been leased from India.

NHA Signs MoU with CSCs to Generate New PVC Beneficiary Cards, ‘Ayushman cards’ under AB-PMJAYPVC Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY cards Freei.On February 19, 2021 The National Health Authority (NHA) has signed Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with Common Service Centres (CSCs) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology(MeitY) to generate new  Polyvinyl Chloride(PVC)beneficiary cards called ‘Ayushman cards’ under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
ii.This enables the eligible beneficiaries under PM-JAY to avail their entitlement cards free of cost.
iii.The MoU was signed by Dr Ram Sewak Sharma, Chief Executive Officer, National Health Authority and Dr Dinesh Tyagi, Managing Director, CSC e-Governance Services India Ltd at the NHA office in New Delhi, Delhi.

Exim Banks Extended LOC of USD 7.35 Million to Republic of NicaraguaExim Bank extends LOC of USD 7-35 millioni.On February 26, 2021 The Export-Import Bank of India(Exim Bank), on behalf of the Government of India, extended Line of Credit(LOC) of USD 7.35 million(about 54 crore) to the Government of the Republic of Nicaragua.
ii.Purpose: To replace and supply equipment of the High Technology Centre of Hospital Antonio Lenin Fonseca at Managua, Nicaragua.
iii.An agreement to this effect was signed between Jose Adrian Chavarria Montenegro, Vice-Minister General of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, Government of Republic of Nicaragua and Mr. Nirmit Ved, General Manager, Exim Bank on February 18, 2021

Matam Venkata Rao Appointed as MD & CEO of the Central Bank of India, replaced the incumbent Pallav MahapatraMatam Venkata Rao appointed as MD & CEO of Central Bank of IndiaThe Central Government has appointed Matam Venkata Rao, the Executive Director of Canara Bank as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Central Bank of India for a period of 3 years.

  • He replaces Pallav Mahaparta, the MD & CEO of Central Bank of India who retires on 28th February 2021.
  • With this appointment of MV Rao, Canara bank will have only 2 executive directors.

About M V Rao:
i.Matam Venkata Rao took charge as one of the 3 executive directors of Canara Bank on 9th October 2017 for a period of 3 years.
ii.The central government extended his term as the executive director of Canara Bank for a period of 2 years on the completion of his 3 year term which ended on 8th October 2020.
iii.He has served as the General Manager of Allahabad Bank prior to his appointment in Canara Bank.

‘E-Daakhil’ portal for e-filing of Consumer Complaints becomes operational in 15 States/UTsE-Daakhil portal for consumer grievance redressal now operational in 15 states, UTs‘E-Daakhil’ portal which was launched by National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (NCDRC) in September, 2020 for Consumer Grievance Redressal (e-filing)  is now operational in 15 States/UTs across India. “edaakhil.nic.in” has been developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC).

  • e-filing of consumer complaints in Consumer Commissions & online payment of fees for filing a complaint is mandated under Consumer Protection Act, 2019 which came into force in July, 2020.
  • Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution has been following up with States & UTs in India for the launch of e-filing.

‘E-Daakhil’

  • Using the portal consumers & their advocates can file consumer complaints  from anywhere. It also allows consumer commissions to check the complaints online to accept, reject or forward the complaint to concerned commission for further processing.

Previously the state also initiated similar online services like e-Vidhan Sabha, e-Budget, e-Cabinet making services easily accessible.
