1st Online Edition of Cannes Film Market 2020 Launched; Virtual India Pavilion Inaugurated by Union Minister Prakash Javadekar Virtual India Pavilion at Cannes Film Market 2020

i.On June 22, 2020, the Cannes Film Festival launched the 5 days long first online edition of Marché du Film 2020 (Cannes Film Market) which will continue till June 26, 2020. Marché du Film is the business arm of Cannes Film Festival. 
ii.The e-inauguration of the Virtual India Pavilion at Cannes Film Market 2020 was done by Minister of Information & Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar.
iii.It should be noted that the two films sent for the prestigious CANNES festival’s Marche’ du Film section from India are Ananth Narayan Mahadevan’s MaiGhat: Crime No 103/2005 (Marathi) and Abhishek Shah’s Hellaro (Gujarati). Both are National Film Award winning movies that are being screened in the Market.

Centre to allocate Rs 3,000 crore from PM CARES for ventilator supply & migrants welfare₹3,000 crore from PM-CARES

i.The Central Government is all set to allocate Rs 3,000 crore from the PM CARES Fund for supply of ventilators and for the welfare of migrant labourers.
ii.Centre will spent Rs 2,000 crore in the procurement of 50,000 Made-in-India ventilators to Government-run Covid hospitals in all States/Union Territories (UTs).
iii.On the other hand, Rs 1,000 crore has already been released to States/UTs for the welfare of migrant labourers. The distribution of the fund is based on the formula of 50% weightage for the population as per 2011 census, 40% weightage for number of positive Covid-19 cases and 10% for equal distribution among all the States/UTs.

In March 2020, the Centre set up the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-CARES) as a public charitable trust with the primary objective of dealing with any kind of emergency or distress situation, like COVID-19 and to provide relief to the affected.

Central Govt Approved Rs. 412.19 Crore for Implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in TelanganaTelangana under Jal Jeevan Mission

On the lines of the announcement made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019 regarding Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) which aims to provide “Functional Household Tap Connection” (FHTC) to 18 Crore rural households of the country by the year 2024, the Centre has earlier approved funds for the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission for Odisha, Meghalaya, Assam & Bihar. After that Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand & West Bengal received fund allocations for the same and Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tripura also received the fund allocations for Jal Jeevan Mission. Now extending this scheme further for other states, Centre has now approved funds to the following states for FY2020-2021:

  • Central Govt allocated Rs. 412.19 Crore for Telangana under Jal Jeevan Mission in 2020-21.

It aims to enable every rural household to have assured availability of potable water at a service level of 55 litres per capita per day (lpcd) on a regular and long-term basis.

Ministry of Sports to Establish 1000 District Level Khelo India Centres to Engage Former Champions in trainingSports Ministry to establish 1000 district-level Khelo India centers

On 20th June 2020, The Ministry of Sports, government of India has decided to establish around 1000 district level Khelo India centers (KIC) all over the nation to engage the former champions in sports training and to ensure a source of income for them in the sports.
Centers Purpose:
i.To ensure sports as a viable career option for the youths and motivate parents to support athletics as a career.
ii.To strengthen the grassroot level sports.
iii.To ensure the contribution of the former champions in the development of India’s sports sector while gaining livelihood through sports.
Shortlisting mechanism:
i.Athletes who represented India in international competitions under NSF or Associations.
ii.Medal winners in senior National Championship or Khelo India Games.
iii.Medal winners in National All India University Games.
iv.State representatives in Senior National Championships under NSF or Khelo India Games.
v.Coaches trained with NIS certification in Jammu and Kashmir, Andaman and Nicobar islands and Ladakh are eligible to apply.
vi.Organisations managed by former champions or organisations with former champions as coaches promoting more than 5 years are eligible to establish KIC.
Training at KIC:
The 14 Identified Sports for Excellence in Olympics (ISEO) including archery, athletics, boxing, badminton, cycling, fencing, hockey, judo, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, wrestling. Football and traditional sports will be trained at KIC.

On June 22, 2020 Karnataka Bank launched a new product ‘KBL Micro Mitra’ for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSMEs). This product will provide financial assistance up to Rs 10 lakhs to the Micro manufacturing and service enterprises for working capital or for investment purposes.

RBI Extends Rs 50,000 Crores Special Liquidity Window for YES Bank by 3 monthsRBI liquidity window for YES Bank by 3 months

The Reserve Bank of India(RBI) extended a special liquidity window for Rs 50,000 crores to Yes Bank for three months, to help private lenders cover for shortfall in deposits.
Key Points:
i.The Yes bank was first provided with a special liquidity window for 3 months in March, which ended in June. The bank has requested for the same facility for one year, against which the RBI has extended for another 3 months.
ii.The RBI has made the emergency credit line of nearly Rs 600 billion available when the bank was under a moratorium that restricted deposit withdrawals at 50,000 rupees.
iii.The capital infusion will help Yes Bank diversify its ownership, meet the regulatory requirement and fund its growth.

On June 22, 2020, According to the Moody’s Global Macro Outlook report for June 2020, there will be a contraction of 3.1 % in India’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020 & expects a change in geographical conditions in Asia due to tensions at the border between India and China. 
i.The slight relief for India is that GDP will reach the level of 6.9% in 2021. Till then, there will be a slow recovery in the Indian economy.

China has successfully launched the last Satellite of its BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), The satellite was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch center in Sichuan Province.

  • BDS is one of the four global navigation networks among the US’s GPS, Russia’s GLONASS and European Union’s Galileo.
  • Fifteen BDS-3 satellites have been launched till October 2018. BeiDou-3 consists of 35 satellites and the final satellite

IIT Bombay Researchers Develops Chip ‘Dhruva’ to Navigate LocationsIIT-Bombay develops Dhruva

On June 19, 2020, Researchers at IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Bombay led by Rajesh Zele from the Department of Electrical Engineering have created a chip named ‘Dhruva’  that can be mounted in smartphones and navigation devices to find places and routes within the country.
i.Dhruva sends and receives radio signals to India’s NAVIC group of navigation satellites (i.e 36,000 km above the earth’s surface) as well as GPS-based satellites to accurately determine these under all weather conditions.

Coach & Former Indian Shooter Pournima Zanane passed away at 42Coach-and-former-shooter-Pournima-Zanane-dies-of-cancer-aged-42

On 20th June 2020, Former Indian Air Rifle Shooter Pournima Zanane, an International Shooting Sport Federation(ISSF)-licensed coach who suffered from cancer for the past 2 years passed away at the age of 42 in Pune, Maharashtra. She was born in Nanded, Maharashtra.
Career & Awards:
i.She started as a shooter in Mumbai and represented India in numerous ISSF World Cups, Asian Championships, Commonwealth Championships.
ii.She holds a national record in the 10 m air rifle event.
iii.She started coaching shooters in 2012 and she was the coach of the shooters team of Sri Lanka.
iv.She assisted World Champion Farnik Thomas (Austrian Shooter) in 2014.
v.The government of Maharashtra honoured her with Shiv Chhatrapati Sports award for 2018-2019 on 22nd February 2020.

Former MP & Journalist Vishwa Bandhu Gupta passed away Veteran-journalist,-former-MP-Vishwa-Mohan-Gupta-passes-away

On 21st June 2020, Former MP and a veteran journalist Vishwa Bandhu Gupta, who was nicknamed as Balloon Man around the age of 93 he passed away in Delhi. He was born in Bhingar, Bombay Province, British India.

i.He was associated with the National Congress party and became the Member of Parliament (MP) in April 1984.
ii.He represented Delhi in Rajya Sabha from 1984 to 1990.
iii.He served as the Vice-President and District President of Delhi Congress.
