India gets its 1st Semi High-Speed Regional Train for Delhi-Meerut RRTS projectIndia received its first semi high-speed regional train for the 1st phase of National Capital Region Transport Corporation’s (NCRTC) 82.5 km long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS (Regional Rapid Transit System) line, from Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility.
- This train is 100% indigenous, in line with the government’s Make in India programme and Aatmanirbhar Bharat’s ambition.
Rollout Ceremony
It was held at Alstom’s manufacturing site in Savli, Gujarat, in the presence of Manoj Joshi, Chairman–NCRTC, Secretary, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA); Vinay Kumar Singh, Managing Director (MD), NCRTC, and Alain Spohr, MD, Alstom India.
- Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, MoHUA joined virtually.
About High-Speed Regional Train:
i.It is designed at Alstom’s Hyderabad engineering centre and manufactured at Savli.
- Its design is inspired by Delhi’s iconic Lotus Temple
ii.The propulsion systems and electricals are manufactured at the company’s factory in Maneja (Gujarat).
iii.Its speed is 180 kmph
iv.It is expected to reduce the travel time between Delhi and Meerut by 40%.
v.This semi high-speed aerodynamic trains are energy efficient, offer comfort and safety features for premium passenger experience for commuters, including those who are disabled.
Point to be noted:
The Savli site produces bogies and car bodies and undertakes train testing. This Alstom plant at Savli has successfully delivered Delhi Metro and Queensland Rail trains and is currently producing metro trains for Kanpur and Agra cities.
PMJJBY, PMSBY, and APY complete 7 years of providing Social Security net
i.On May 9, 2022, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), and Atal Pension Yojana (APY) complete 7 years of providing social security net.
ii.These were launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9th May 2015 in Kolkata, West Bengal to provide affordable insurance and security to people from the unorganized section of the country.
iii.PMJJBY is a one-year life insurance scheme renewable from year to year offering coverage for death due to any reason..
iv.APY is open to all bank account holders in the age group of 18 to 40 years and the contributions differ, based on pension amount chosen.
v.PMSBY is a one-year accidental insurance scheme renewable from year to year offering coverage for death or disability due to accident.

Mercom’s India Solar Project Tacker: Rajasthan First State to Cross 10 GW Solar Production
According to Mercom’s India Solar Project Tracker, Rajasthan is fast emerging as the solar hub after becoming the first state in India to develop 10 GigaWatt (GW) or 10,506 MegaWatt (MW) Large Scale Solar Power generation out of total 49,346 MW of Solar power.
- Of the 10,506 MW shared Solar – 9,542 MW is from ground-mounted solar, 668 MW is from rooftop Solar and 296 MW is from the off-grid Sector.
- Rajasthan has a total of 32.5 GW of installed power capacity, out of which 55 percent was from renewable energy, 43 percent from thermal and 2 percent from Nuclear Energy.
Key Points:
i.The Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Limited (RRECL) has earned a record Profit Before Tax (PBT) of Rs 65 crore during 2021-22 from the installed Solar capacity.
ii.Under the Invest Rajasthan 2022 campaign, Rs 8 Lakh worth of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Letters of Intent (LOI) for the energy sector alone was signed between the investors and the state government.

Lokpal To Get Permanent Office at World Trade Centre Building in Delhi
The Lokpal of India is slated to start a new office at the World Trade Centre in Nauroji Nagar, New Delhi, Delhi.
According to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the office is spread over 59,504 square feet on two floors, and was purchased for Rs. 254.88 crore.
Note: As of May 2022, Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose is the Chairman of Lokpal, 5 years after the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act was passed in 2013, Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose was appointed as India’s first chairperson of Lokpal along with eight other members in 2019.
Offices Of Lokpal So Far:
i.According to the Lokpal of India’s annual report for 2020–21, it began operations from a temporary office at the Ashok Hotel in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, Delhi.
ii.It then moved to the former ICADR Building in Vasant Kunj Institutional Area, Phase-II, New Delhi, Delhi, where it began operations on February 14, 2020.
iii. Due to the non-availability of land, the office of Lokpal proposed to procure built-up office space at the World Trade Centre, Nauroji Nagar in New Delhi (Delhi), from the National Buildings Construction Corporation (India) Limited.
Lokpal Of India:
i.The Lokpal is the first-of-its kind institution in independent India, established under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act 2013 to inquire and investigate allegations of corruption against public officials who fall within the scope and ambit of the Act.
ii.The Lokpal of India is committed to address concerns and aspirations of the citizens of India for clean governance.
iii. India is a signatory to the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
iv.Organizational Structure: The Lokpal is composed of a Chairperson and 8 members, 50 % of whom are Judicial Members. The President of India appoints the Chairperson and Members by warrant under his hand and seal, and they serve for a period of five years from the date on which they enter upon the office or until they reach the age of 70, whichever comes earlier.
v.Ambit of Lokpal: Anyone who is or has been Prime Minister, a Minister in the Union government, or a Member of Parliament, as well as officers of the Union government in Groups A, B, C, and D, can be investigated by the Lokpal.
- The body also handles complaints against the chairpersons, members, officers, and directors of any board, corporation, society, trust, or autonomous body established by an Act of Parliament and wholly or partially funded by the Centre, and any society, trust, or body receiving foreign contributions exceeding Rs. 10 lakhs.

SEBI forms Advisory Committee for ESG-related matters; Headed by Navneet Munot
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has formed an advisory committee for advising on Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) related matters pertaining to the securities markets.
- The committee will be chaired by Navneet Munot, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HDFC Mutual Fund.
Key Responsibilities of committee:
i.In terms of the Business Responsibility and Sustainability report the committee will look at reviewing leadership indicators.
ii.It will also examine evolving disclosures relevant to the Indian context, as well as suggesting areas for assurance and a plan for implementation.
iii.It will oversee the development of a second or parallel approach for ESG ratings as pet emerging markets, such as a focus on ‘S’ including job creation, and so on.
- This will also include developing uniform indicators of ‘G’ as input to ESG ratings and / or credit ratings.
iv.It will assess the ongoing improvement of disclosures relevant to ESG Mutual Fund Schemes, with a special focus on risk mitigation of mis-selling and greenwashing hazards.
v.Examine whether ESG funds need to have prudential norms, if any. Long term plan to prescribe ESG disclosures for all Mutual Fund schemes.

Guruswamy Krishnamoorthy, An Indian to Receive British Honour ‘MBE’ For His Service During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Guruswamy Krishnamoorthy, CEO of Penlon, a world-class British medical technology firm, is likely to receive The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (Civil Division) Award 2022 – Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) recognition from the Queen at Buckingham Palace, London, UK. Guruswamy Krishnamoorthy hails from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India.
- Penlon is situated in Abingdon, England, United Kingdom (UK).
- Guruswamy will be honoured for his contributions to the COVID-19 pandemic ventilator challenge.

i.Guruswamy led a group of companies that formed a consortium with Penlon as its hub. In 12 weeks, 11,700 ventilators were provided to the United Kingdom government by employing around 4,000 people for three round-the-clock shifts.
ii.The effort also resulted in an award from the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK.
5th Romain Rolland Book Prize 2022 Awarded to Bengali Translation of French Novel ‘Meursault, Contre-Enquête’
The fifth Romain Rolland Book Prize – Romain Rolland Book Prize 2022 has been awarded to the Bengali translation of the French novel “Meursault, contre-enquête” (The Meursault Investigation).The award ceremony was organized by the French Institute in India.
- Meursault, contre-enquête is the debut novel of Algerian writer and journalist Kamel Daoud.
The award was presented to translator Trinanjan Chakraborty and publisher Esha Chatterjee of Patra Bharati, a leading publisher of prestigious Bengali books, during the French Literary Festival-French LitFest 2022 at Bikaner House in New Delhi on May 07, 2022. This is the first time Patra Bharati, the publisher, has gotten this honour.
French LitFest 2022: The French LitFest 2022 was part of the ongoing “Bonjour India,” an art and culture summer festival that celebrates the relationship between India and France.
The festival, which is supported by the French Embassy and is funded by the French government, is touring 19 cities with over 200 activities.
Romain Rolland Book Prize: The Romain Rolland Book Prize, which was established in 2017, honours the finest translation of a French title into any Indian language, including English. As part of the prize, the winning publisher and translator will each receive a guided trip to the Paris Book Fair 2023 (Livre Paris 2023).
Key Points:
i.The French Institute in India/Embassy of France in India chairs the jury, which is composed of professors from various universities in France and India as well as literary translators from both countries to assess the quality of the translations.
ii. In 2021, the Tamil translation of the French novel “Le mariage de plaisir” by Dr S A Vengada Soupraya Nayagar won the Romain Rolland Book Prize. The french novel is authored by Tahar Ben Jelloun.

Rodrigo Chaves Takes Office as President of Costa Rica
Rodrigo Chaves of the Social Democratic Progress Party(SDPP) sworn in as President of Costa Rica for a four-year term, promising to eliminate corruption and revitalise one of Latin America’s most stable economies. He will succeed Carlos Andrés Alvarado Quesada, the outgoing President.
- Chaves earned ~53% of the vote and defeated former President Jose Maria Figueres, who received ~47% of the vote in the Presidential Elections 2022, which were held in April 2022.
The ceremony in San Jose, capital of Costa Rica will be attended by delegations from approximately 100 countries, including King Felipe VI of Spain.
About Rodrigo Chaves:
i.Chaves has nearly 30 years of experience as an economist with the World Bank, with expertise in macroeconomics, public policy, and finance.
ii.He served as finance minister in the administration of outgoing President Carlos Alvarado for seven months from 2019-2020.
iii. He has committed to address Costa Rica’s significant economic challenges, which include growing foreign debt (about 70% of GDP), a 23% poverty rate, a 14% unemployment rate, and public sector corruption. Costa Rica’s overall debt is approximately USD 42.62 billion, with the rest being external.
iv.He also promised to improve Costa Rica’s agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a loan worth more than USD 1.7 billion.
v.Chaves has stated that his government will not ratify the Escazu Agreement, which provides protection for environmentalists, claiming that it is unnecessary and harmful to the economy. Costa Rica, a regional leader in environmental protection, had hosted the signing of the agreement in 2018.

MHA launches portal for retired CAPF and Assam Rifle personnel seeking Re-Employment PSAs
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has launched a portal ‘CAPF Punarvaas’ for the benefit of personnel belonging to Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) like CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) and BSF (Border Security Force) seeking re-employment after their retirement.
- It will help retired personnel seeking re-employment to find an appropriate match by uploading their personal details on the Welfare & Rehabilitation Board (WARB) along with their area of expertise and preferred employment location.
Key Points:
i.It will facilitate retired CAPF and Assam Rifle personnel to secure employment with Private Security Agencies (PSAs).
ii.It also runs a portal under Private Security Agencies Regulation Act (PSARA) for the registration of PSAs.
iii.Both websites have now been interlinked whereby the database of retired CAPFs personnel who have applied on CAPF Punarvaas can be accessed by PSAs through PSARA website.

The Red Bull driver Max Verstappen (Belgian-Dutch), had won the first edition of the Formula 1(F1) 2022 Miami Grand Prix title, which was held from 6th to 8th May 2022 at Miami International Autodrome in Miami Gardens, Florida, United States (US). Verstappen defeated the Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc (Monacan) by 3.786 seconds and pushed Charles Leclerc to the second position.
- The Miami Grand Prix event was the fifth round of the 2022 Formula One (F1) World Championship.
- Miami becomes the 11th different venue in the US to host a points-scoring round of the (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) FIA Formula 1 World Championship, since the series was inaugurated in 1950.

i.The Spanish Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz Jr. and the Mexican Red Bull driver Sergio Pérez, finished the race in third and fourth position respectively.
ii.Miami 2022 title marks Max Verstappen’s second victory in a row and third victory of the year. Previously he has won the 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in March 2022 and Emilia Romagna Grand Prix 2022 in April 2022.

About Rajat Kumar Kar:
i.Rajat Kumar Kar was born on 2nd October 1934, in Mahanga village of Cuttack district, Odisha.
i.He was conferred with the Padma Shri award in the year 2021 for his contribution in the field of Literature and Education.
ii.As an Orator of Jagannath Culture, for the past six decades, he Chronicled the Annual Rath Yatra on Television and Radio programmes. He also wrote a few books on Lord Jagannath.
iii.In 1995, Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy awarded him with ‘Best-playwright’ award for 1993-94. He holds the record of being the oldest and longest active commentator of the famous Rath Yatra festival.

International Thalassaemia Day 2022 – May 8
International Thalassaemia Day is annually observed across the globe on 8th May to create awareness about Thalassaemia, an inherited blood disorder caused when the body doesn’t make enough of a protein called haemoglobin, an important part of red blood cells.
The theme of International Thalassaemia Day 2022 is “Be Aware. Share. Care: Working with the global community as one to improve Thalassaemia knowledge.”

Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War – 8-9 May 2022
The United Nations (UN)’s Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War is an annual two-day global observance that occurs on May 8 and 9 to pay tribute to the victims of 2nd World War(WW2), that took place between 1939 and 1945, one of the epic struggles for freedom and liberation in the history.
2022 celebrations mark the 77th anniversary of the end of WW2.
Background:
i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/59/26 titled “Commemoration of the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War” on 22nd November 2004 and proclaimed 8th-9th May as the Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War
Note: 2005 marked the 60th anniversary of the end of WW2.
ii.The resolution also invited the member states, UN organisations, non-governmental organisations and individuals to observe either one or both of these days to pay tribute to all the victims of WW2.
- The ‘Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War’ was first observed across the globe on 8th – 9th May 2005.
iii.In 2010, UNGA adopted the resolution A/RES/64/257 titled “Sixty-fifth anniversary of the end of the Second World War” on 2nd March 2010 and invited to observe these days in an appropriate manner.
63rd Raising Day of Border Roads Organisation – 7th May 2022
The Border Roads Organisation(BRO), annually celebrated its Raising Day on 7th May to mark the establishment of the BRO on 7th May 1960. The day aims to recognise the contribution of the BRO personnel toward the creation and maintenance of infrastructure across the border region.
BRO is the leading road construction organisation in India under the Ministry of Defence which also provides support to the Indian Armed Forces.
