Border Roads Organisation Raising Day - May 7 2022

The Border Roads Organisation(BRO), annually celebrated its Raising Day on 7th May to mark the establishment of the BRO on 7th May 1960. The day aims to recognise the contribution of the BRO personnel toward the creation and maintenance of infrastructure across the border region.

BRO is the leading road construction organisation in India under the Ministry of Defence which also provides support to the Indian Armed Forces. 

  • 7th May 2022 marks the observance of the 63rd Raising Day of BRO. 

Background:

i.The Border Roads Organisation(BRO) was formed on 7th May 1960 to secure India’s borders and develop infrastructure in remote areas of the north and north-east states in India. 

ii.The Government of India(GoI) set up the Border Roads Development Board (BRDB), as an inter-ministerial body, in March 1960 with the Prime Minister as Chairman of the Board and the Defence Minister as Deputy Chairman.

Events:

As a part of the observance of the 63rd Raising Day of BRO, The Ministry of Defence organised an event in New Delhi, Delhi. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh along with Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Pande, Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar, Director General Border Roads (DGBR) Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry participated in the event. 

Software launch:

i.He also launched 2 softwares: BRO Resource Management System and BRO Budget Management System, developed by Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N). 

ii.These will automate the distribution and utilisation of the resources as well as the budget of the BRO.

Highlights:

i.Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged in ‘BRO@63 Multi-Dimensional Expedition’ organised in the run-up to 63rd Raising Day.

ii.He also flagged off ‘BRO@63-All Women Electric Vehicle Rally’, a first of its kind Electric Vehicle Rally which aims to sensitise the people on ‘Environmental Conservation and Climate Change’. This is in line with Prime Minister’s vision to switch over to 100 per cent Electric Vehicles by 2030. 

iii.Recently, the government of India(GoI) has increased the capital budget of BRO by 40% to Rs 3,500 crore in Financial Year 2022-23

BRO & Women: BRO has also created the first-ever All Women RCC in Joshimath, Uttarakhand.
