Darjeeling celebrates Tenzing Norgay’s 101st birthday

  • Tenzing Norgay’s 101st birthday was celebrated in Darjeeling. He along with Edmund Hillary of New Zealand, reached the summit of the world’s highest mountain peak, Mount Everest, first in the world on 29th May.
  • Several functions were organised in the hill city to pay tribute to him, born as Namgyal Wangdi, who climbed the Mount Everest in 1953.
  • Norgay was awarded the Padma Bhusan in 1959, he also received several medals and awards by England and Nepal.He died at the age of 71 in 1968.

Mumbai hosts India’s first edition of TEDxGatewayWomen Conference

  • The first TEDxGatewayWomen Conference in India was held in Mumbai on 29th May. In accordance with the motto of TED’s mission — ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’ — the TEDxGatewayWomen had eleven “empowered women” sharing the moments and ideas that initiated action towards change.
  • There were stories worth knowing, be it Justice Leila Seth, persisting with a cynical senior advocate to bag an opportunity to work under him as a young lawyer and then go on to become the first woman Chief Justice in India( Mumbai high court ) or Canadian artist and scientist Ariel Garten’s general curiosity about how things work, which led her to “democratise access to our brains” with her wearable technology.
  • The other notable speakers were Padma Shri awardee and Director of SEWA Reemaben Nanavaty, and economist-farmer-activist Chetna Gala Sinha, Co-founder, CEO at Mad Street Den & Mad Street Lab Ashwini Asokan, playback singer and soprano Natalie Di Luccio, co-founder of Menstrupedia Aditi Gupta, classical dancer and choreographer Ananda Shankar Jayant and founder and publisher of White Print — India’s first English lifestyle magazine for the visually impaired in Braille — Upasana Makati.

Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in as Nigeria’s president

  • Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in as Nigeria’s new head of stated for a four year term, after he won the first opposition victory over a sitting president in the nation’s history.
  • Buhari, 72-year-old, took the oath of office before the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Supreme Court President Mahmoud Mohammed.
  • Buhari’s won over outgoing president Goodluck Jonathan in March 28 polls.Before taking the oath, he shook hands with the elected president he ousted in 1983, Shehu Shagari, in a military coup, and he himself was ousted after 14 months.

Nepal skips R-Day celebrations to mourn quake-dead

  • Even as the government decided not to celebrate the seventh Republic Day celebrations, which falls on Friday this year, messages to mark the day poured in from home and abroad.
  • Google Doodle changed its logo for Nepal – with a picture of candles – Thursday to mark the Republic Day and to honour Nepalis’ resilience. “On May 28th, 2008, after decades of revolution and protests, Nepal became the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, the fund side of the search engine giant wrote. “Seven years later, this country is an international symbol of splendour, peace, and tenacity.”

Andrzej Duda officially named president-elect of Poland

  • Andrzej Duda, winner of Poland’s presidential election, was officially named president-elect in a state ceremony at the Baroque Wilanow Palace.
  • Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz, Duda’s parents, wife Agata and daughter attended the ceremony to see the 43-year-old lawyer receive the official document confirming that he won the election. His five-year term starts Aug. 6.
  • Duda is a member of the Law and Justice party, he won the presidential election against Komorowski of the ruling pro-business Civic Platform.

Hindustani vocalist refuses to accept an award conferred on her

  • Renowned Hindustani vocalist Prabha Atre has refused to accept the Swarbhaskara award, instituted in the memory of legendary vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, conferred by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). It carries a cash prize of Rs. 1,11,000 and a citation.
  • She cited a reason, that the civic body has taken nearly a year for the official presentation, announced on June 13, 2014.
  • PMC Mayor Dattatreya Dhankawde on the other hand said the vocalist’s office had laid down the conditions that the award should be presented either by Union Minister Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister Suresh Prabhu or former Justice Chandrashekhar Dharmadikhari barring which the award would not be accepted and Rs. 75,000 should be made available towards honorarium for the artistes participating in this programme.
  • The first Swarbhaskara award was given in 2011 to playback singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Sepp Blatter wins re-election as FIFA president

  • Sepp Blatter was re-elected as FIFA president for a fifth term on Friday, chosen to lead world soccer despite separate U.S. and Swiss criminal investigations into corruption.
  • He was chosen for the post by the 65th FIFA Congress held in Zurich.
  • The 209 FIFA member federations gave the 79-year-old Blatter another four-year term after Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan conceded defeat after losing 133-73 in the first round.

Sevilla FC won Europa League title

  • Sevilla Football Club (FC) on 27 May 2015 won Europa League title. In the final clash at National Stadium Warsaw, Poland, Sevilla defeated Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk football club, 3-2.
  • It was second consecutive Europa Cup win for Sevilla.
  • Sevilla, the Spain’s oldest club solely devoted to football practice, became the first side to win the Europa League four times. Last time, it captured the trophy in 2006, 2007 and 2014.

Obituary

Actor Wally Cassell died at 103 

  • Cassell died peacefully on April 2 at his home in Palm Desert, California. He was 103. He left behind his wife, actress, singer and songwriter Marcy McGuire.
  • He, born in Sicily, with real name Oswaldo Castellano, began his movie career in 1942, when he signed a contract with MGM, and made his debut in the movie “Fingers at the Window”.
  • Some of his memorable works are, “The Guilty”, “Breakdown”, “Quicksand” , “White Heat”, in which he played a gang associate of James Cagney’s character, and in war movies like “Sands of Iwo Jima” and “The Flying Leatherneck”
  • He also made appearances on TV, with guest roles on hit programmes like “Gunsmoke”, “The Untouchables”, “Rawhide” and “The Beverly Hillbillies Velvet”.
