On 7th October 2020, The Government of Uttar Pradesh(UP) and the Zurich Airport International AG(ZAIA) signed a 40-year concession agreement which grants licence to Zurich Airport for designing, building and operating the Noida International Airport(NIA) (also known as Jewar Airport) at Jewar, outskirts of Delhi.Â
The concession agreement was signed with the Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) a special purpose vehicle incorporated by Zurich Airport for this project.
Arun Vir Singh, CEO, Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) and Christoph Schnellmann, representative of Zurich Airport International signed the concession agreement.
About the Airport:
i.The Noida International Airport at Jewar will be constructed under the Public Private Partnership(PPP) basis.
ii.The airport is located 70 kms from Delhi, 40 kms from Noida and 130 kms from Agra.
iii.The international airport is Scheduled to open in 2024 with a passenger capacity of 1.2 crore passengers per year.
iv.The airport will be developed on a 1334 hectares of land and the state government has reserved an additional 5000 hectares for airport extension.
v.The Noida International Airport project will be constructed with an initial payment of Rs.4588 crores for the first phase.
Key Points:
i.NIA will become the first net zero emissions airport in its class and will establish a new standard for sustainable aviation.
ii.The airport will commence its operation with a single runway and after completion by 2040, the airport will have 2 runways with a capacity of 7 crore passengers per annum.Â
iii.The Ministry of Home Affairs provided the security clearance to ZAIA in May 2020.
iv.NIA will be operated as a complete digital airport, which will provide a safe and contactless travel experience and other commercial benefits for passengers.
Note:
Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority shared its idea to link the Airport with the Yamuna Expressway, Metro and Western Peripheral Expressway.
